MESSAGE FROM THE 4-H AGENT Dear 4-H Families,
THANK YOU to all the 4-H members, parents, and
volunteers for the active participation in this year’s
Pungo Strawberry Festival and 4-H Livestock
Show and Sale. The events were a huge success!
This year, the Pungo Strawberry Festival (PSF)
had one of the largest local 4-H presence with a
total of six 4-H Club exhibits: Foragers Beekeeping
Club, Top Shooters Club, Wave Riders Horse
Club, Guardians of the Planet Club, Seahorse
Riders, and Livestock Club. In addition, 4-H teen
counselors had a booth to promote 4-H Camp and
play games with youth. 4-H Club members from
JEB Little Creek, NAS Oceana, Foragers
Beekeeping Club, and Guardians of the Planet
Club also participated in the new Citywide Visual
Arts Contest. This PSF allowed youth to talk about
their clubs and projects, share opportunities to get
involved, raise funds, and create further awareness
of 4-H in the Virginia Beach community.
The Livestock Show and Sale was another
success with over sixty members of the 4-H
Livestock Club exhibiting market lambs, hogs,
goats, steers, breeding does, and hams. Twenty-
four members competed in the Stockmen’s
Contest. Thanks to our supporters, the auction
gained a total of $167,807. I appreciate the hard
work of the 4-H members, Show and Sale
Committee, volunteers, and parents that helped
put together this great event!

GUARDIANS OF THE PLANET 4-H CLUB In May, the Guardians of the Planet went to the Nimmo Community Garden and helped set up the garden for planting. We helped prep growing beds by pulling weeds and buckwheat, a cover crop for winter. After, we split up and helped plant sprouts and seeds in various spots in the garden. Finally, we watered the plants. The Guardians were able to give products donated by the Espoma Company to help the Nimmo Community Garden.
During the May monthly meeting, we inducted a new member, Townes. The Guardians were at the Strawberry Festival on Saturday and Sunday. We sold herbs like basil, mint, sage, thyme, and rosemary. We also sold lavender, strawberry plants, and citronella plants. On Sunday we also sold water.

FORAGERS BEEKEEPING 4-H CLUB In April, the Foragers volunteered at the LifeNet
Share the Love 5K for our community service
project. We were able to have a table at the 5K
where our members educated the runners about the
importance of honey bees. Ashten dressed in his
bee suit and explained the bee hive frame that we
had displayed in the observation hive. Kayla and
Amariah helped the runners get to the finish line with
some cheering. Nina passed out waters to the
finishers.
At our May meeting, we had a honey bee basics crash course so that our new beekeepers were ready to
educate festival goers at the Strawberry Festival at the end of May. Our club’s leader and mentor, Hodgie,
showed the members the inside of a bee hive using our training hive. At the Strawberry Festival, we had a very
packed observation hive so the public could see what bee brood and honey looks like inside the beehive. The
club members had a great time getting people to find the queen which was marked with a red dot on her
thorax. We also had a table full of beekeeping tools and bee hive products for people to touch, see and smell
like propolis, beeswax and a smoker.

SEAHORSE RIDERS 4-H CLUB
Hello All Fellow 4-H’ers!
We hope everyone’s summer is off to a great start. Seahorse Riders have been having a lot of fun! In May,
we participated in the Annual Pungo Strawberry Festival for the entire weekend! We set-up an informational
booth for all interested in in becoming a part of the Seahorse Riders. It was a lot of fun teaching everyone all
about horses with interactive games, prizes, and more. We also shared a lot of information about 4H and
summer camp opportunities as well. Big thanks to the Pungo Strawberry Festival for having us!
We hope everyone has a fantastic summer!
