Assalamu Alaikum

The month of Ramadaan has opened a new chapter in our lives – of peace, blessings and an

elated feeling of spiritually. May ALLAH TA’ALA accept our fasting, Ibaadah and other righteous

actions that we have completed in Ramadaan.

As I signed documents this week I couldn’t believe that it was already June and I have been at Orient for six months. How time flies when you’re having fun—or working hard—and we are doing both here at Orient. It has been a wonderful six months for me as I got to know the learners, staff, and parents. The partnerships we have with you are integral to your child’s suc-cess. Thank you for the countless hours you invest in your child’s education.

The development of the school over the past few years has been significant. The future will build on the firm foundations which have been established and on the quality of school life, especially for the benefit of our learners.

We all want the best for our children, and we, the teachers and parents, must play a key role in

the education of our children. Words of encouragement, a hug when the day has been rough,

parental interest in your child’s work, and your presence at school are vital!

Each Learner will gain from school according to the effort he/she applies. To increase the de-gree of educational success, it is very important that teachers, parents, and administrators com-municate openly and frequently concerning the progress of learners. The curriculum emphasises the acquisition of knowledge, useful skills, understanding, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities for all learners attending our school. Every learner is unique and special and that they all have the ability to learn. We believe it is our responsibility as educators to nurture and develop every learner to their maximum potential. Learners are continually encouraged to appreciate our diverse community and to care for others by becom-ing global citizens, and develop a concern and active respect for the environment.

Learning is a life long adventure. It is not just knowing the answer or acquiring bits and pieces of knowledge. It can't simply be measured by grades and examination results.

At Orient, we have recognized the need for lifelong learning and that the responsibility for learning lies in the hands of individuals and, of course, with the parent, teacher and the com-munity. The aspirations and values in any society are rooted in the environment of the home and are nurtured by both the family and the school. In attaining such educational change, the priority at Orient is to teach our children how to learn and how to think. Armed with these skills, our learners will be able to cope with change and complexity. Admittedly, the school must possess character, tone and discipline - that which is most essen-tial for an environment conducive to learning - to make our I earners become leaders in socie-ty, hence our motto "Learning for Leadership". It is through the full support of our Board of Gover-nors, the Parents and Mums Committee and teachers that we are able to develop our learners into well-balanced individuals; and we are achieving this academically, socially, morally and on the sports field. Our teachers do their utmost to develop in our learner qualities such as perse-verance, humility and good character.

We are committed to nurturing each learner’s potential. We are committed to excellence of

educational delivery. We are committed to assisting learners to exercise genuine respect for

others, nurturing them to develop healthy relationships and to become responsible citizens.

We are doing all we can to ensure that when our learners eventually leave school, they will do

so as confident, caring young people, who are creative, collaborative, and committed to their

learning. Our values of respect, integrity, curiosity, and excellence, are behind everything we do

as a staff and as a school.

Orient is forging ahead. With the spirit of co-operation we receive from all stakeholders we can only grow from strength to strength and contribute significantly to our flourishing, opti-mistic and creative community.

My heartfelt thanks and appreciation is, therefore extended to the Board of Governors, all par-ents, well-wishers, sponsors and donors, who have contributed in the past and who are con-tributing currently. To my committed and dedicated staff - may the Almighty reward you for your tireless efforts and, finally, to my super learners - let us keep on striving. A happy holiday to all.

Message from the Primary School Principal ’s Desk

In the name of Allah, the Most Kind, the Most Merciful

Dear Parents/Guardians

Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatulahi wabarakatu

We have reached the half way mark in our academic calendar and the end of the blessed month of Ramadaan . We feel a sense of great sadness, its beautiful days and its fragrant nights. Ramadaan, the special month of the Qur’an, the month of piety, patience, mercy, and forgiveness has bid farewell. May the departure of Ramadaan find us as better individuals than we were at its arrival. Alhamdulillah! Another successful term draws to a close and always brings with it a tremen-dous sense of accomplishment. The term was a buzz of activities beginning with our annual celebration of our Reading Month. We had our Hooked on Books, Book fair, Book Character Day and our final Reading Challenge. Congratulations to our children who enthusiastically par-ticipated in our reading race and were awarded book prizes. The Primary School completed their June Examinations on the 20 June , many found the papers challenging and I am sure that they have been given a taste of what to expect at the end of the year. We look forward to rewarding all our learners for their hard work in the term end Awards Assembly. Over the past weeks we have experienced the immense highs of so many events at the school. From the sports days, excursions, Science Fair, Ramadan Amazing Race and the charity drives. Parents visiting the D6 and reading the fortnightly newsletter will have seen a fair number of photos of the recent school functions and activities. These have proved to be very worthwhile and exciting. The primary school were involved in many of the successful outreach projects this term. We also take the opportunity of expressing our heartfelt gratitude to our well-wishers, donors and sponsors. May Allah Ta’ala reward you abundantly, Ameen. A special to thank the wider parent community for their active, on-going support. The combined and focused efforts of each person helps. I wish to acknowledge our precious children, the students. I thank them for the joy they give us all and for reminding us of the things that matter most. May the Blessings of Almighty be with us all today and always. Jazakallah Khair to all the Staff for their hard work, dedication and commitment, thank you!

May Allah(SWT)) guide us all from strength to strength Insha’Allah. Let us all part in good faith and reach our destinations safely. I wish you all well over the holidays and have an awesome break.

Message from the Head of Islamiaat

Assalaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakaatu Alhamdulillah, All Praise be to Allah (SWT) for allowing us to see yet another exciting and beneficial term. The month of Ramadan is surely a month filled with all-round blessings and Barakah. The highlight this term was surely the Syrian collection which was so warmly embraced by each one of you from the ‘Orient Family’. More than R140 000 was raised for the victims of war in Syria. These funds will be taken personally by Ml. A. Mahomedy of the Jamiat –ul – Ulama (KZN) to the Syrian refu-gee camps and orphanages on the Turkish borders and distributed on your behalf. Insha-Allah. May Allah (SWT) reward each one of you abundantly for your generous contributions. Ameen. Further and closer to home, the Joint-Iftaar Programme held at school on the 10

th of June was a suc-

cessful event, Alhamdulliah. Learners from the M.A. Motala. Centre (South African Dawah Network) were our guests of honour. A short Zikr, Nasiha and Dua programme terminated with the break of the fast where all present enjoyed the scrumptious and variety of meals provided. The learners were pre-sented with a small Eid gift upon departure. Once again we thank you, the ‘Orient Family’ for your support and generous contributions. Ameen. Eid gifts for underprivileged learners/ orphans were prepared by Grade 2 to 6 learners. Monies were collected and bags full of tasty goodies were filled by the learners themselves for distribution. The LRC also embarked on a collections drive. Eid gifts were also distributed to orphans and the underprivi-leged at Collis Road. Dbn. Hafez Saifullah Kathrada of Grade 11 came 1

st in the Regional South African Quraan Competition. Ma-

sha-Allah. We wish him all the best for the National Finals. About 25 current OIS learners performed Salaatut – Taraaweeh at various venues in and around Durban. We pray that Allah (SWT) accepts their recitation and hardwork. Ameen. We also like to congratulate our ‘Shining Stars’ those little OIS learners who kept as many fast as they could this Ramadaan as well as those who completed the Khatam of the Holy Quraan. You have in-deed outshined us all, Masha-Allah. Keep it up. Finally, to each one of you, a very warm and blessed Eid – ul – Fitr. May Allah (SWT) accept our Ibaadah and good deeds that we achieved this Ramadaan and may He bless us with many more to come. Ameen. Have a fruitful and restful holiday and a safe journey to those that are travelling. Ameen. Fi Amaanil – Allah. Wassalaam

FOUNDATION PHASE

Message from HOD Intermediate Phase :

Alhumdulillah, Ramadaan with its abundance of barakah has come and gone. May Allah accept our ibadah and duas and may we all continue to strive to draw closer to our Creator through-out the year. It was heartening to see our little ones embrace the spirit of Ramadaan by sharing toys with Inchanga Muslim school, collecting items for the hampers for our helpers at Orient and by saving their allowance to help purchase Eid treats for the less fortunate. They eagerly awaited the packing of the treats and did it with much fervor and zeal. Masha Allah, may Allah accept their efforts and may this generosity and compassion be an intrinsic part of their character. As we reach the mid-year mark and reflect on the past few months, I am pleased to note how much our little ones have grown. Yes, they are taller and stronger. Yes, they are definitely more robust than earlier in the year. Their reading, writing and mathematical skills have improved. They have also grown in other aspects too. They are confident and outspoken. They are com-passionate and considerate. They listen to each other. This holistic growth is vital for their de-velopment and is aligned to our Mission Statement. The year ahead promises many more opportunities for growth: academic, social and emotional. I look forward to the boost of maturity that we witness in the latter part of the year and am ea-ger to see our little ones blossom and reach their true potential. May Allah guide us all and may He be pleased with our efforts. With Kind Regards

GRADE ONE MUMS’ PAMPER DAY

“Jannah lies underneath the feet of the mother” - Keeping this as a focal point, the Grade One learners had the enthralling opportunity of spoiling their mum’s on the 25

th of April 2017. This

was made possible by a well-organised event that the Grade One educators and Foundation Phase team put together. Various fitness activities and pampering sessions were most enjoyed by the mums. A special thank you to all the mum’s that joined us on the day.

LET’S GO GREEN!

The learners from the Foundation Phase began Ramadaan with a commitment to care for their

environment, when they attended a programme hosted by Mr Guy Cawes from DSW on the

29th

of May 2017. He was most impressed with the learners' knowledge of the three R’s and the

impact of garbage on the environment and health care. The programme entailed storytelling

and interactive activities using recyclable materials which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. A

promising start to a spiritual Ramadaan, by helping to heal our World.

AMAZING RAMADAAN RACE

OIS primary phase participated in a fun Ramadaan race which highlighted the various aspects of this important month. It kicked off with a race to complete a puzzle on foods eaten at sehri and iftaar, then a clue sent learners racing to the playground on a search for specific items. The final leg of the race had them searching for books on Ramadaan in the library. Learners then wound down with a powerpoint presentation which highlighted the importance of fasting and the various acts of ibaadah to perform during the month. In addition, the qualities of kindness, sharing and continuing to do good deeds out of Ramadaan was emphasized. This interactive race was thoroughly enjoyed by learners.

IN THE SPIRIT OF EID

The Foundation Phase learners enjoyed making various crafts and goodies for Eid. The lesson behind each one of these activities was well received by all. Masha’Allah!

INTERMEDIATE PHASE

Message from HOD Intermediate Phase : “By the token of time through the ages verily man is at a loss. Except those who believe and do good deeds and enjoin each other in patience.” ( S Al Asr ) As we say Al Wida to Ramadaan we realize that time has no barakah. It is hard to believe that we are now drawing to a close in the first half of the school year. It has been a hectic term starting off with the ever successful Fun Day and Book Character Day amongst others, followed by the Athletics and Natural Science and Technology Fair culminating in the first family iftaar and mid year examinations. A big thank you to all of the parents and educators that work to ensure that these opportunities keep happening and evolving. The educator, parent and manager is a special and unique part of the very important job of educating and giving our learner’s the vital knowledge and life skills to embrace life and to be a successful member of the Ummah. Alhumdulillah we are their personal cheerleaders ensuring that there is growth in their academic as well as their spiritual, emotional and social self. Our ongoing partnership with parents together with the tireless efforts of the educators is the important factors in our learners' success in school. Jazakallah khair to those parents who have given the extra hours and support to their child in order to ensure that they are successful. Our partnership with parents is something we truly value.

To my team of educators – your hard work, energy, support for learners at all levels and supportive yet rigorous instruction for all learners has been a major contribution to the success of the school year thus far. Allah SWT grant you Jaza e Khair for all your effort. It is through being a collaborative learning community with consistent, honest, and open communication that we can gain success. In Sha Allah if we carry on working together as a learning community and do things with our learners' best interest as the focus, we will produce great future leaders of our Ummah. May Allah SWT grant each one hidayat and success in this world and the next, Ameen ya Rabbul Alimeen. Jazakallah Khair

GIFT OF THE GIVERS : ONE MAN COLLECT-A-CAN CAMPAIGN

Your contributions have saved tens of thousands of lives as Gift of the Givers chartered 11 flights carrying 175 tons of supplies and sent in another 132 containers carrying 2640 tons of aid on several ships. Together with the medical support they provided at the four hospitals their total spend in Somalia has been a staggering R80 million over a one year period. With poor rainfall once again, a predicted late harvest, increased conflict and slow recovery from the famine of 2011 our support for Somalia continues. Presently 126 000 people are accessing food daily from our 4 Feeding Centres, 7000 orphans are provided for by Gift of the Givers and several hundred physically challenged families are given food parcels monthly. As El-Shabbab withdraws from several areas, thousands of new starving, dying refugees are flocking into Mogadishu and other parts of Somalia for life saving food aid. The Primary School is proud to have been associated with the One Man Collect-a-Can Campaign. Jazak’Allah to all the parents for their support .

EID SWEET PROGRAMME

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was the most generous of the people and he was even more generous during the month of Ramadan, he would be more generous than a swift wind bringing rain. Keeping this in mind, the Primary school Islamiyaat department em-barked on an Eid sweet programme this Ramadaan. Learners from grade 2 to grade 6 were given little bright charity boxes to fill. Alhumdulillah our learners' big hearts filled those little boxes and we were able to purchase sweets, chips, biscuits and cool drinks to distribute to the less fortunate on the Day of Eidul Fitr. Every learner from grade 1 to grade 6 participated in the packing of the 300 goodie bags. The grade 6 learners supervised the entire hamper packing process. Sweet hampers were sent to the Isezwe Islamic centre. Our cleaning staff were also given hampers for which they were very grateful. The balance of the hampers were sent to Kwa Makuta were a mass Eid programme was conducted by Sheikh Abdul Latweef. Special thanks to Ms Vanker and the other library staff, Nabeeha Essa and Ekram Jelalu(grade 6.1) for their help and enthusiasm

MESSAGE FROM THE LIBRARIAN

THE AMAZING RACE

The Amazing Race – Ramadan Edition was an enjoyable, exciting and educational journey which had the learners racing from the dining hall to the outdoor play area and culminating in the Media centre. Along the way the learners had to answer quizzes, find clues and locate an-swers from the various books on display, all the time focusing on Ramadan 2017.

TOP READERS

In keeping with the theme of promoting reading, the media centre had a search for the ’ TOP READER’ contest over the months of March, April and May. We are pleased to note that the competition motivated more learners to read. Every month, saw different names appearing on the notice board, indicating the challenge among the learners to be the TOP READER.

Congratulations to the following learners :

LIBRARY LESSONS With a major part of the term falling in the month of Ramadan, learners were educated about the significance and practice during this auspicious month. Foundation phase learners were quizzed on what they were taught and awarded little tokens as prizes. Story-telling forms a vi-

tal part of the library lessons especially with the very young learners. After listening to the sto-ries learners are often questioned as to its relevance for present day. In this way themes such as bullying, manners, sharing, respect, etc are discussed in an informal manner. Being the ex-amination period Intermediate phase learners were advised on the importance of drawing up a

study time-table. Learners were taught about the structure of a time-table, what to take into consideration when drawing up a study time-table, allocation of time and subjects to be studied.
