Message from the President

Happy Thanksgiving!

Fittingly enough, this month’s one-day Board of Regents meeting was like a Thanksgiving feast for the mind. The smorgasbord of timely topics included:

The link between economic prosperity and higher education, with two national expert speakers – one in person and the other “beamed in” from the East coast, thanks to videoteleconferencing.

The launch of our systemwide “Knowledge Powers Wisconsin” communication plan.

The inaugural Regents award for distinguished service to UW System, awarded to John and Tashia Morgridge.

A celebration of UW Cooperative Extension’s 100

th anniversary.

A wide-reaching presentation on veterans’ issues and how UW System is better serving veterans.

Kudos to the many “chefs” behind the scenes who served up the various meaty courses and pulled out all the stops of technological wizardry. Here’s a look at the menu. On the topic of thankfulness, Regent Regina Millner was delighted to join us for the UW System Administration staff recognition event earlier this month. She very much appreciated the opportunity to get a better understanding of the work you do in support of the Wisconsin Idea and the UW System’s mission. She was glad, also, to offer her thanks in person. I hope this can become an ongoing tradition to invite a Regent or other special guest to our staff recognition event. Wishing you all a safe, scrumptious Thanksgiving holiday. This time of year, the wild turkeys that live around Brittingham House are thankful to be roosting in the trees and not resting on anyone’s dinner plate! Please read on for the invitation to the UWSA Holiday Reception at Brittingham House. Sincerely,

Brittingham House decorated for the holidays in a snowy December

Staff Recognition Award Winners

Tou Her Classified Staff Exceptional Service Award

Melissa Viken Classified Staff Exceptional Service Award

You’re invited to a holiday celebration at

Brittingham House

Kevin and Kate Reilly cordially invite UW System Administration staff to a holiday celebration at Brittingham House on Wednesday, Dec. 12, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Hors d’oeuvres and beverages will be served. As in years past, non-perishable food items will be collected during the holiday party. If you prefer to make a monetary donation rather than non-perishable food items, cash or check donations will be gratefully accepted as well. Second Harvest can purchase five meals for just $1.00, so their buying power is much greater than ours. You may find it more practical to make a monetary donation rather than going to the store and purchasing items yourself. Checks can be made payable to Second Harvest and are tax deductible.

For directions to Brittingham House, see this printable map. Enter the parking lot at 6010 Old Sauk Road.

Please RSVP by Wednesday, Dec. 5, to Marian Rockholt, 262-2321 or

[email protected]. Kevin and Kate look forward to welcoming you for this annual event of holiday good cheer!

Staff Recognition Event highlights

Special guest Regent Regina Millner joined President Reilly and colleagues at the Alumni Lounge in the Pyle Center to celebrate this year’s staff recognition event. President Reilly recognized four staff members for reaching years of service milestones:

40 years – Terri Reda, Capital Planning and Budget

30 years – David Hill, Information Services

25 years – David Pulda, Safety and Loss Prevention

25 years – Robert Jokisch, Academic and Student Affairs

This year’s Classified Staff Exceptional Service Award was presented to two recipients: Tou Her, who has worked in the Office of Operations Review and Audit since 1998 as an auditor skilled at problem solving and respectful of the shared governance traditions of UW institutions; and Melissa Viken, who joined the Office of Procurement in 2009 and has earned a reputation for timeliness, a positive demeanor, and great initiative as she assists colleagues with their purchasing needs.

Todd Bailey received the Eugene Craven Memorial Award, which goes to an outstanding academic staff member selected by the Academic Staff Committee. Todd has worked for UWSA since 2000, joining the Office of Policy Analysis and Research in 2004. Todd is known for expertly and calmly pulling together the complex institutional accountability reports and serving as assistant project coordinator for the Transfer Information System.

The President’s Award of Distinction was awarded to Gail Bergman, acting director of the Office of Policy Analysis and Research. Gail joined OPAR in 1989. Nominator Heather Kim praised Gail’s expert guidance and leadership, and expressed appreciation for her institutional memory combined with an openness to new and different perspectives.

Congratulations to all honorees! For more about the winners, see the program booklet.

OPID announces… 2013 Spring Conference The Office of Professional and Instructional Development (OPID) is proud to announce its annual Spring Conference: “The Value of Inquiry into Student Learning in the 21st Century,” to be held April 18-19 at the Madison

Concourse Hotel in Madison. The Conference is being co-sponsored by OPID and the UW System Office of Academic and Student Affairs.

The conference will bring together over 200 faculty and staff across many disciplines to demonstrate the UW System’s commitment to excellence in teaching and student learning. It will also provide a forum to recognize, acknowledge, and share the expertise of faculty and academic staff who excel at teaching, value learning, and are committed to sharing their experience, knowledge, practice, and scholarship with colleagues. The intentional relationships among teaching, learning, and making excellence inclusive will be a foundation of this event. A plenary on the threat of stereotypes will feature Valerie Purdie-Vaughns from Columbia University (see bio), and concurrent sessions on scholarly inquiry into student learning, inclusive excellence, online learning, leveraging technology in teaching and learning, and research that links the effectiveness of student learning and high impact practices. OPID invites proposals in all of these areas from UW System faculty, instructional staff, and students with faculty/staff sponsorship. Presentation formats will include papers, panels, workshops, and poster sessions.

Proposals to present at the conference are due Nov. 29, by filling out this

online form: http://form.jotform.com/form/2083441995. Additional information can be found at www.uwsa.edu/opid/.

OPID announces…Faculty College 2013

Faculty College 2013, sponsored by the UW System Office of Professional and Instructional Development (OPID), will be held once again at the UW-Richland campus in Richland Center from May 28 - 31. The College brings together approximately 100 faculty and instructional academic staff from across the System for three days of intensive exploration of teaching, learning and curricular issues.

This year, OPID is pleased to feature a keynote by Patrick Sims, assistant professor of theatre from UW-Madison. He will be performing his one-man play Ten Perfect, where he portrays a fictionalized version of James Cameron, who was nearly lynched in Marion, Indiana, in 1930. Two other men were murdered that night, and the act will be captured in an iconic photo shown in the background. Following his play, Professor Sims will facilitate a discussion with faculty on the impact of racism.

In addition to the keynote, we have an exciting lineup of workshops:

“Decoding the Disciplines: Helping Students Learn Disciplinary Ways of Thinking” by Joan Middendorf of Indiana University;

A seminar on online learning including hybrid models of teaching and flipping the classroom, featuring Dr. Brian Udermann, Kristin Koepke, and Jen Snook of UW-La Crosse; and

A Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) workshop team taught by Dr. Regan Gurung and Dr. David Voelker of UW-Green Bay.

All UW System institutions will be invited to nominate six faculty participants. Questions about Faculty College should be directed to La Vonne Cornell-Swanson, director of OPID, at 608-263-2722 or [email protected].

Wisconsin Task Force on Access 2 Success for

Native American Students plans February meeting The planning group for the Wisconsin Task Force on Access 2 Success (A2S) for Native American Students will meet on Dec. 3 at UW-Eau Claire to discuss several initiatives surrounding enhanced teaching and student learning for Wisconsin’s Native American students, and to plan for the statewide A2S meeting in February. The primary goal of the February meeting is to develop a partnership with Wisconsin’s 11 Sovereign Nations, the Community College of the Menominee Nation and the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa Community College, Wisconsin’s Department of Public Instruction, and the UW System to improve the recruitment and retention of Native American students. Sponsored by the Office of the Senior Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, the Wisconsin Task Force on A2S for Native American Students will take place at the Radisson Oneida Convention Center in Green Bay, Wis., on Feb. 21-22. 2013 Tax-Sheltered Annuity 403(b) and Wisconsin

Deferred Compensation limits announced

The IRS announced the 2013 contribution limits for the UW Tax-Sheltered Annuity 403(b) Program (TSA) and Wisconsin Deferred Compensation 457 Program (WDC).

In 2013, employees may contribute a maximum of $17,500 to the TSA Program. Employees age 50 and over can contribute an additional $5,500 for a total of $23,000. These same limits apply to WDC. Employees can contribute the maximum to both programs for a total of $35,000 (under age 50) or $46,000 (age 50 or older).

If you have 15 years or more of service with the UW, you may have an additional "catch-up" opportunity with the TSA Program. Check with Lindi Farra at 263-0105 to see if you are eligible. For more information, see the webpage on TSA limits.

Both pre-tax and after-tax 403(b) contributions count towards the annual limit. For example, if you are under 50, you could contribute $8,500 pre-tax and $9,000 Roth after-tax to each program.

Employees currently enrolled in the TSA Program can easily change TSA contributions for 2013 by submitting a Salary Reduction Agreement (SRA) to Lindi Farra, Human Resources, 780 Regent Street, Suite 224. See the TSA website for more information about enrolling in the program.

If you want to change your deduction for 2013, you should submit your TSA Salary Reduction Agreement to Lindi no later than Dec. 14. Clearly mark the form as calendar year 2013.

To change your WDC contribution or enroll in the WDC Program, call the WDC office at 1-877-457-9327 or enroll online.

WDC changes must be made with Great-West Retirement Services in early December 2012, so that they have adequate time to electronically remit the information to the payroll office.

Ergo News: Which is better, sitting or standing? By Dawn Holt, risk management specialist

When it comes to a workstation, which is better, sitting or standing? Research shows that both prolonged sitting and prolonged standing are of concern. Therefore, it is not an “either-or” situation. The more responsible approach is a combination of sitting and standing activities throughout the work day to minimize the potential for adverse health consequences associated with both postures. For prolonged sitting, there is the potential for a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, obesity, Type 2 diabetes, deep venous thrombosis, and low back disorders. Prolonged standing has been associated with muscular disorders in the legs, knees, and low back; varicose veins; joint damage; foot problems; as well as circulatory issues. Keep these guidelines in mind when incorporating sitting and standing into a workday:

Limit continuous (static) sitting to 4 hours per day.

Limit continuous (static) standing to 1 hour per day.

Limit cumulative standing to 4 hours per day.

Promote variation between sitting and standing postures throughout the day.

Promote active movement while sitting and standing.

So which is better, sitting or standing? The answer is, “neither.” But what is best is variation (and movement) between sitting and standing throughout the day. If you are interested in an ergonomic assessment of your workstation, contact Dawn Holt, risk management specialist in the Office of Safety and Loss Prevention, at 265-4658 or [email protected].

Inclement weather policy refresher Just a reminder that UW System Administration staff should review and follow the "Inclement Weather Practice" in the event the Madison area experiences severe weather conditions: www.wisconsin.edu/hr/inclemnt.htm

Please contact Jason Beier, HR manager, at 265-7880, if you have questions.

Note: Supervisors are encouraged to arrange for telephone communication necessary between themselves and those they supervise in order to meet the intent of the “General Practice” section of the document.

Important issues affecting bus riders

Bus Passes and IDs: As of Nov. 12, bus drivers may request UW employee bus pass

holders present a valid UW Wiscard or UW Health/Hospital ID when boarding the bus and using their pass. Metro Transit staff are addressing concerns about fraudulent use of its unlimited ride passes. UW-Madison employee bus passes are non-transferable. Passes that are transferred to an unauthorized user will not be replaced. Madison Metro may request proof of employment identification at any time, but be aware that they will be asking more frequently in the coming days and weeks. Riders boarding the free campus bus routes will not be required to present their pass or identification.

UW employees and UW Health employees whose passes are confiscated because they forgot their ID may receive a replacement pass from any Transportation Services office during full service hours for $20. In addition Metro drivers will provide a one-day (same-day use) pass upon confiscation.

New or replacement Wiscards are available at Union South, Room 149: www.wiscard.wisc.edu.

For more information, please contact Madison Metro at 266-4466 or email [email protected]. You can also visit www.cityofmadison.com/metro/fares/passinfo/.

Campus Bus and Accessible Transit Study: Transportation Services recently held a

series of public events where the preliminary results of a consultant’s study on the campus bus and accessible transportation at UW-Madison were presented. These findings and your input may impact future changes to the campus transportation system. If you could not attend, but have some thoughts, please email: [email protected].

The presentation will be posted soon at www.transportation.wisc.edu/transportation/bus_routes.aspx.

Thank you from Red Cross
