Life Cycle Events

Request from Rabbi Siegel Please keep us informed of significant events in your family life. It is our desire to be of help and service to you in times of special need. It is especially important that we know of those in the hospital, and assisted living or nursing homes, so that we can visit and they may be included in a prayer for recovery at Shabbat Services.

B’Yachad By David Pearlman, President

I know what you are thinking….He’s still President? I’m just as surprised as you are, and yet here we are. As I write the June B’yachad column, it

is mid-May and we are going to be cele-brating this coming Shabbat with Rabbi Siegel as he prepares to move on to his next adventure. Rabbi Siegel has brought to Kol Ami a wonderful ruach and love for Judaism and Torah that can be infectious. Having worked with him over these past two years, I can personally vouch for his love of Kol Ami, and we will miss him. Thank you, Rabbi, for your leadership over these past two years, and B’Hatzlacha to you and Ellen on your continued adventures.

The summer months sometimes can be slow. Let me assure you all that this is hardly the case as the calendar turns to June, 2019. As I mentioned last month, I’m excited to be joining Rabbi Blatt in New York this month for the USCJ seminar, Etz Ratzon. This is a program which is specifically designed for new clergy who will be working with new presidents. So, if this were Fiddler on the Roof, I’d be screaming, “It’s a perfect match!” Topics range from “Explain Your Congregations’ Ongoing Narrative” to “Foster Personal Connections.” I look forward to sharing the results with you in an upcoming B’yachad column. Additionally, the Tran-sition Committee and Mitch have been in regular contact with Rabbi Blatt to make sure that we are all ready for the big day in August when we begin our new future B’yachad! Stay tuned for details as we work together to find opportunities for the Blatt family and Kol Ami family to get to know each other. What a wonderful thing!

We are also attempting to create a feed-back forum for all things Kol Ami. Updates will be forthcoming, but basically the idea is for congregants to go to the Kol Ami website and use the forum under “Trend-

ing@Kol Ami” to share your thoughts on how we can make Kol Ami even better. We will keep you updated as to when this is live, and I will commit to this congrega-tion that we will do our very best to make sure that anyone reaching out will have a voice.

As our Recharge Committee continues its work, it becomes even more important for us to all work together to build the type of community that we wish for. At the most basic level, what we seek will ultimately come down to us building, or in

some cases re-building, relationships with each other. Whether we agree or disagree on an issue, we can all agree that there are just not that many Jews in the world: a small number are living in Florida, and an even smaller number are here in our little nook in Tampa, Florida. How lucky are we to have each other!

Things are not just heating up outside, things are heating up right here at Kol Ami!

B’yachad, David Pearlman

Please join us for our next How-ard Kanter Kiddush Fund Lun-cheons on Saturday, June 15, and Saturday, July 13. These compli-mentary luncheon are catered by Nosh Caterers and are also open to non-members in the greater Jewish Community.

Although members are not required to RSVP to attend, we do ask that any non-members who plan to attend contact the Kol Ami office at (813) 962-6338 to make reservations so we can prepare appropriately.

The Kiddush Fund, created by Kol Ami member Howard Kanter (z”l), provides one Kiddush Lun-cheon per month on a Shabbat

that does not have a Kiddush Luncheon sponsored by members or another committee of the synagogue.

Your extra donations (in addition to your usual contributions to Kol Ami) help insure this effort for years to come. Donors are recognized in the Weekly Watch and Shabbat Shalom the week of the sponsored luncheon.

We hope to see you on Saturday, June 15, and Saturday, July 13. Also, please be sure to mingle and introduce yourself to someone you don’t know at these wonderful op-portunities to make new friends and enjoy fellowship with your Kol Ami family.

Facility Focus & Security Spotlight

House Highlights

THANK YOU Sisterhood for donating our two new canopies at the en-trances of the Chapel and School. These canopies

will enhance the beautification of our property and keep us dry on a rainy day.

This summer, we will be painting the exterior of our entire synagogue as well as the three metal benches at the Chapel and Sanctuary entrances.

Four new air conditioners are now up and running in our School, replacing the old units that were in need of repair.

We are in the process of installing sensor lights for the Board Room, Kitchen and the Social Hall storage room.

The Decorating Committee is busy work-ing on digitalizing our Confirmation class pictures. They will be completed and hanging in the long hallway this summer. They are going to look spectacular.

Future Projects

• Upgrading the Amphitheater seating that our School uses in the east yard.

• Power washing the Nicole Kleban Memorial Garden.

Security Spotlight by Jon Zimmer

As a result of the recent security fee increase for 2019 / 2020, we will be increasing our utilization of the HCSO Deputies for our services, holidays and events beyond what we already do currently. You will see a great many occasions with two Deputies on site. We thank you for your support.

While we are in the process of completing the last items for our 2017-2019 National Homeland Security Grant, we have also completed and submitted our 2019-2021 Grant application. It will be sometime in

August or September before we will hear the results.

If you have any information or sugges-tions to share regarding safety and security, or if you are interested in joining the Security Team, please feel free to contact Jon Zimmer at [email protected].

Kol Ami Sisterhood (cont’d)

A Mazelgram is a quick and easy way to send your Kol Ami friends and family Rosh Hashanah greetings. Just look through the enclosed list (alphabetized by first names) and check off who you want to send greetings to. Then complete the first page order form and return that with your check written to Sisterhood of Kol Ami. You don’t write checks? No problem; Mazelgrams can be charged to your account at Kol Ami. Mazelgrams are $1.25 each, which includes post-age. You also have the option to send greetings to the entire congregation for

Mazelgrams

only $118! That is less than 30 cents per greeting. You can even select a greeting for your Mazelgrams when ordering.

By supporting Mazelgrams, you take care of purchasing, writing, address-ing, and mailing out all those cards in one easy step. You also support Kol Ami Sisterhood’s ability to carry out so many of the things we do for the synagogue throughout the year, including most of the Oneg Shabbats and Kiddush Luncheons, religious school activities, and support of the Kol Ami community.

Remember to watch the deadline of Friday, September 20, 2019 and be sure to get your Mazelgrams order in early! Look for your Mazelgram order form in the mail in July. Send all Mazelgrams to Sisterhood, c/o Congregation Kol Ami. Order forms for Mazelgrams will also be available in the office in July.

Bookmarks for KidsSisterhood partnered with the East Tampa Academy, a charter school serving under-served children at risk in VPK and grades K-2, in the Rainbow Heights area, to create special bookmarks for their students. The bookmarks are special because each one was personal-ized. Sisterhood members had fun decorat-ing the bookmarks with fun, child friendly stickers, laminating them and adding a tassel to finish them. Check out the picture. Several sisterhood members also baked treats of cup-cakes, brownies and assorted cookies for the school to use for the VPK graduation. Thank you to Cindy Korenvaes, Gwen Niehoff, Sylvia Richman, Carol Tarica and Lisa Teblum for working on the bookmarks and baking. We know the school appreciated our efforts and the students enjoyed getting the bookmarks and treats!

Sisterhood Needle Workers meet weekly, every Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in the Jaffe Board Room. It is open to everyone and provides crafters an opportunity to social-ize, exchange information, and learn new techniques.

One of the current charity projects the group participates in is Warming the World, a local nonprofit organization that provides hats to newborns around the world. Hats can be knitted or crocheted; however, many of our group prefer to use a circular loom. Last year, the organization sent hats to six states (IL, TN, MS, AL, FL and MN), Puerto Rico, Ecuador, Brazil, Iceland, Guam, Burundi, Somaliland, the American Heart Association, several orga-nizations that help mothers worldwide, and one organization that helps babies locally.

For information about the Sisterhood Needlework Group or contributing to Warming the World, contact Carol Tarica at [email protected]

The Future is Here!B’ruchim haba’im! [Welcome!] to Brother-hood (“2.5”) with our new Board and new

President… me! I am very honored to serve as the new Brotherhood president for 2019-2021 and equally excited about the opportunity to continue the revital-ization and amazing growth we have enjoyed over the past two years. What was once old is new again, with a new energy and a new vision of what Broth-erhood can be for the men of Kol Ami, young and old alike, and what it can do for our congregation and our Jewish community. I would be remiss if I didn’t share a hearty yasher koach and thank you to Barry Dvorchik, our now Imme-diate Past President, for his outstanding leadership, hard work, and vision, which has enabled us to reach this moment and to achieve what many thought was not possible over the past two years. I also want to thank the other dedicated members of our Board for their hard work, energy, and friendship these past two years.

For those of you who do not yet know me, I am a long-time congregant of Kol Ami (over 18 years now!), the proud father of two amazing daughters (Ellie, a recent graduate of the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill, and Carly, a rising junior also at UNC, and both are graduates of Hillel Academy and had their Bat Mitzvahs at Kol Ami). I am also the lucky and grateful husband of Andie Friedman, and son-in-law of Ilona and Herman (z”l) Friedman. I am a clinical psychologist and, along with Andie and our business partner, the owner of a successful group psychology practice in the Westchase area of Tampa. I look forward to meeting those of you

Kol Ami Brotherhood By Mario Rodriguez, Brotherhood President

whom I’ve not yet had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know those of you whom I have met even better. More-over, I would love to personally invite you to attend one of our many events, programs, or volunteer activities.

One of my goals as Brotherhood Presi-dent over the next two years is to ensure that we offer a wide range of social events, educational programs, and volun-teer activities to satisfy the diverse inter-ests and needs of the growing number of men in our congregation who want to connect, socialize, learn and serve with other Jewish men. Of course, we will continue to offer our existing edu-cational programs, like our 2nd Sunday Lecture Series with interesting speakers from the Jewish community; Hearing Men’s Voices discussion groups where we meet to discuss issues important to Jewish men; or our World-Wide Wrap Program where we teach our religious school students how to wrap tefillin. If you are interested in meeting more of our Brotherhood members, building stronger ties with other Jewish men, or just having some fun, then I am confi-dent you will enjoy attending some of our social events, like our pub nights or our annual Cigars & Spirits Night, or join-ing us at a sports event like Jewish Heri-tage Night with the Tampa Bay Lightning or Jewish Community Day with the Rays, or our annual Super Bowl party. Last, but certainly not least, there are many opportunities for you to get involved by volunteering to help out at one of our Jewish holiday events, like the Purim Car-nival, the Hanukkah party, or setting up the sanctuary for Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, or working with the “Chai Guys” to help care for and maintain the beauty of our beloved synagogue. Whatever your interests or availability may be, we have plenty of opportunities for you to become an active member of our

Brotherhood. And if there is something we do not currently offer that you would like to see Brotherhood offer in the future, please let me or any of our board mem-bers know. We want to hear from you!

In addition to all of our existing pro-grams, we hope to develop new pro-grams and offer more opportunities for our Brotherhood members to enjoy, connect, serve, and learn together. Another one of my goals is to add more Jewishness to our Jewish men’s club by including prayer at our meetings and offering more Jewish learning opportu-nities both with the Rabbi and where we can learn from each other how to be better fathers, husbands, sons, friends, and individuals… better Jews.

I look forward to seeing you at shul and getting to know you better at one or more of our Brotherhood events. I trust that you will find it satisfying, worth-while, and in many cases, just fun to be a part of our growing Brotherhood of men at Kol Ami. Please don’t hesitate to contact me anytime if you have any questions, suggestions or ideas, or even if you’d just like to chat about how we can make our Brotherhood a stronger, more vibrant, and more rewarding expe-rience for all of us. The future is here! I hope you will be a part of it with us.

We had a blast this

year here at Kol Yela-

dim Religious School!

Summer is here and

Abby and I will be

planning some amaz-

ing things for the next

school year! One of the most exciting

things happening will be the arrival of our

new Rabbi! Rabbi Blatt and I have already

been talking weekly to make the transi-

tion an easy one for her and the school.

Abby and I can’t wait to see what exciting

ideas Rabbi Blatt will be bringing with her.

Kids’ KonnectionsBy Jennifer Halls, Education Director

This summer is full of exciting travel and

learning! I will be heading to Israel in

June for three weeks to take several classes

at the Conservative Yeshiva in Jerusalem.

I will be studying Torah, Midrash, Talmud,

Music & Tefillah, as well as volunteering

in a local Memory Unit with Alzheimer

patients. I am looking forward to sharing

what I have learned with all our students

at Kol Yeladim and The Academy at Kol

Ami next year. Next, I am excited to return

to Camp Ramah Darom this summer to

visit with our many campers! The kids

love the visit, and I love being able to

share in all the fun, even if it is only for

a couple of days. In addition, Abby will

be attending the Annual CAJE (Central

Agency for Jewish Education) Conference

in Portland, Oregon to bring back new

ideas to help enhance our program!

Here at Kol Yeladim Religious school,

our future is looking so bright…we need

to wear shades! Have a fantastic summer

with your families and friends, stay cool,

and make sure to wear your shades!

See you in August for an exciting year

ahead!
