Two Special June Series
Nursery Hours
Dr. Rod Kennedy returns to St. James in June and will lead two series, one on Sunday mornings, June 8, 15 and 22, at 10:00 a.m., titled Preachers and Misfits, Prophets and Thieves — The Minister in Southern Fiction.
Talking about the minister is an art form in the South. Here’s the course where we get to talk about preachers, pastors, rectors, priests, and all kinds of evangelists, street preachers and an assortment of charters. There’s one catch: All these preachers are fictional characters in novels and short stories. What happens is that talking about preachers opens the windows of our souls to our human condition — a flawed but grace-filled condition.
On Wednesday evenings, June 11, 18, and 25 at 6:00 p.m., he will discuss American Christianity: A Three-Ring Circus and Why Episcopalians Should Know What’s Going
Infants and toddlers are welcome at all services, but may also be lovingly cared for by trained staff in our nursery on the first floor of the Parish Hall between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Sunday mornings, and for other events as announced.
The arrangements on the altar are given to the glory of God, and on June 1, by the Rev. Mary Ann Garrett and Mr. William Ashby who give thanks for all
the blessings of their marriage, for family whom they love and the joys of life; and,by Dr. and Mrs. Ben F. Thompson III in thanksgiving for the birth and christening of their grandson, Benjamin Nichols Thompson, son of Traci and Michael Thompson;
on June 8, by Bill and Barbara Hughes in thanksgiving for their families; and, on June 22, in loving memory of Blanche Green and her parents,
William and Eleanor Wilkinson by Warren Green.The Parlor arrangements are by Manette Sammons on June 1;
Connie Schneider on June 8; Martha Yancey on June 15; Barbara Bearden on June 22; and, Amy Ferachi on June 29.

On, covering variant movements within evangelical Christianity. Dr. Kennedy will argue that these movements are not only a deviant version of the faith, but also a danger to democracy. The courses will survey the revisionist American history of David Barton, the creationism of Ken Ham of the Creation Museum and the television program Answers in Genesis, and the rapturism of Tim LaHaye of the popular Left Behind series.
Both classes will be held in the CSF Atrium on the third floor of the Ministries Center.

Fifth Annual Summer Sounds at St. James Line-up AnnouncedThe Fifth Annual Summer Sounds at St. James series opens on July 2 with a return engagement of the National WWII Museum’s Victory Belles, a charming vocal trio who delight audiences with their spirited performances featuring dazzling costumes and a potpourri of songs in their newest red, white, and blue celebration featuring great American composers.
Wednesday, July 9, will feature Washboard Rodeo, a New Orleans group focusing on Western swing, a style of music that developed by melding fiddles, steel guitars, and sometimes horns in a blend reminiscent of swing and blues with a little country thrown in. Washboard Chaz leads the quintet as they perform in their unique and enjoyable style.
Topsy Chapman and Solid Harmony will be at Summer Sounds on July 16. Topsy Chapman and her two daughters, Yolanda
Windsay and Jolynda Phillips, record and perform their original compositions, as well as their signature arrangements of traditional and modern jazz, blues, and gospel, in New Orleans and around the world.
Everett Parker, former long-time director of the LSU Gospel Choir, will bring his experience teaching gospel music and spirituals for more than 36 years to St. James on July 23 with the Everett Parker Gospel Quartet. Parker studied sacred music at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and has consulted and conducted workshops in the authentic performance of African-American music across Louisiana, the United States, France and Italy.
The 2014 season will close on July 30 with recording artist and raconteur Armand St. Martin, a tenth-generation New Orleanian who will sing and entertain solo with his popular Louisiana-flavored stories and
his New Orleans-styled piano playing. His original composition, Storyville Blues, was featured on the final episode of HBO’s Treme.
Individual tickets are $10. Season packages are available for $40, which includes five tickets valid at any performance. You could attend all five concerts, or one concert with four friends!

The St. James Legacy SocietyEven if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple
tree. — Martin Luther
Planting seeds for future fruit is both an act of hope and an expression of faith. At the May meeting of the vestry, the formation of the St. James Legacy Society for planned giving was enthusiastically endorsed. Planned giving encompasses a variety of ways that gifts can be made to the church from accumulated resources. It usually involves financial or estate planning; however, it is not reserved for the wealthy. Planned giving is a means by which anyone concerned with the wise use of his or her personal resources makes a considered choice about their ultimate disposition.
In general, planned gifts are made through a bequest in a will, a life income gift such as a pooled income fund, a charitable gift annuity or a charitable remainder trust, or gifts of special assets such as real estate, stock, life insurance or retirement accounts. Planned giving establishes a way for a donor to provide for family members while remembering the church as well.
Planned gifts are generally used to foster the long-term health of the church. These gifts empower ministry beyond what is possible through annual operating funds. Planned giving is a powerful opportunity to ensure your most sacred values and commitments are part of your legacy. Your planned gift represents your hope for the future mission of the church and your faith in generations to come.
For those who make a planned giving commitment, the vestry has established the St. James Legacy Society. If you include St. James in your will or estate plan, in any amount, you become a member of the Society, cementing your part in its history and playing a role in this parish’s future
The Planned Giving Committee of Mimi Riché, chair; Kevin Curry; Daryl Ellis; Gordon Ellis; Jane Henslee; Josh Pesses; and, David Warrington are available to provide more information or to meet with you for a confidential discussion.
On Tuesday, June 3 and Thursday, June 5, informational meetings will be held in the small parlor in the Parish Hall, at noon. Come and learn more about planned giving. R.s.v.p. to Helen Campbell, Director of Stewardship and Planned Giving, at 225-387-5141.

We proclaim Christ crucified and risen, and invite you to join with us in ministry together in his name.
Increased costs to meet new postal regulations and fees have forced us to terminate automatic mailing of The MESSENGER to parish households. Readers are encouraged to use the online version to enjoy color photographs and graphics, easy links to contact information, maps, additional information and reference materials, and more. If you know of someone who cannot receive the electronic version, nor is able to pick up a paper copy available in the narthex, foyers and vestibules, please share their name with us so other arrangements can be made — or better yet: pick one up and bring it to them on a visit, yourself!
Greeters for the Ministries CenterThere are several openings available for morning and afternoon greeters at the Ministries Center, as well as We Care ministry openings.
Asking a greeter, “Why are you here each week?” she replied, “Church is more than attending a Sunday service. It’s getting to know people, its joining a ministry you enjoy…then it’s your church!”
Please consider this ministry for yourself, a friend, or new member who might be enriched by volunteering as Ministries Center Greeter. To sign up, please click here, type your name in the spot you wish to fill, and we’ll see you at the Ministries Center!
