Return to Life: An Ecumenical Approach to HealingProgram for the Separated or Divorced Begins March 9After a well-received series during the spring of 2013, the partnership of St. James Episcopal Church and St. Aloysius Catholic Church in pre-senting this divorce recovery program has been expanded by the addition of First United Meth-odist Church to the community support team.
St. Aloysius hosted the series last fall; First United Methodist Church will host a series in the fall of 2014; and, St. James Episcopal Church is
hosting the series this Lent, starting on Sunday, March 9 at 3:00 p.m. continuing for five Sunday afternoons, and scheduled so that participants may attend the parish’s evening service, as they desire. The program concludes on Saturday, April 12 with a Day of Healing retreat from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
St. James parishioner Melissa Anderson was introduced to the Catholic’s Divorce Survival Guide series at St. Aloysius, and said, “It (the series) was so healing for me, I wanted to start something at the Episcopal church.” She discussed this idea with Angela Falgoust, who had introduced The Catholic’s Divorce Survival Guide at St. Aloysius and is active in ministry for the divorced and divorcing.

Gumbo 2014 co-chairs Ashley Frey and Mary Pesses invite you to join the fun and fellowship as a Gumbo volunteer! Gumbo 2014 opens on Friday, March 7, and volunteers will be needed each Friday during Lent to help host lunches in Bishops Hall, deliver take-out orders to waiting vehicles, and even support the volunteers! Pre-sale “dipping” and Sunday quart sales could use your help, too.
If you can’t help at church, spread the word about Gumbo where you are! Click here for a downloadable flyer you can print and put on the bulletin board at work, the gym, etc. And, here’s a downloadable to-go menu form, so you’re ready to place your telephone order for walk-in or drive-thru pickup.

Return to Life, continued from page one
“We’re excited about the partnership,” said Melissa, who added that the experience of pain in divorce and the healing that should occur following it, crosses all denominational lines. She said the ecumenical effort is a movement of the Holy Spirit. Angela Falgoust agreed, “[The] collaboration on this six-part Lenten series is truly a gift of the Holy Spirit … at the end of the hour meeting we were partners in this endeavor. We all felt when we left the meeting that God was driving this train and we would just have to do the leg work.”
According to Marianne Skrobiak, who will facilitate the Day of Healing, she developed Return to Life after her own long-term marriage in the Catholic faith ended in divorce. She said the series helps participants as they grieve over the loss of their marriage relationship and their dreams associated with it.
Angela Falgoust said, “It does not matter how long you were married or how long you have been divorced. We have had participants in past workshops who were divorced 20 years and had never experienced healing. That is even more painful than going through the time and effort it takes to get beyond the hurt of a divorce.” She added, “Pain held inside can manifest itself in other ways, such as bitterness and unforgiveness. If we don’t address the mistakes we made in our marriages, often times, we repeat them in new re1ationships, creating more need for more healing.”
The weekly sessions include a video presentation and small group discussion. Return to Life provides attendees a safe environment in which to discuss their experiences.
For the Day of Healing, participants are asked to bring something from their former marriage to the altar to signify to God they are ready to let go of that marriage. “It’s an extremely powerful, cathartic moment for them when they let go,” Skrobiak said.
The cost of the sessions is $50 and is limited to 50 people, registered by application. For information on the series, please contact Kelly Williams at 225-387-5141 ext. 229, or [email protected]. A downloadable flyer about the series to share with family or friends who may benefit from the series, and application are available here (www.stjamesbr.org/return-to-life.html), or through our online registration portal, here.

Enneagram Workshop at St. James Expands on Last Fall’s PresentationAcclaimed Enneagram presenter Sandra Smith, M.Div., returns to the St. James Center for Spiritual Formation the weekend of March 28-29, 2014 for a second exploration into the Enneagram perspective.
The first day of this two-day event will allow participants to explore Enneagram wisdom related to the spiritual perspectives and gifts of the nine personality types. The second day of this workshop builds on the first and is shaped to expand our understanding of our type by exploring our type’s resource points (wings and connecting lines). Understanding these resource points allows us to more fully grasp the complexity and dynamics of the Enneagram as we place ourselves in a larger context, not only within this system, but within our own perspective of self.
This material requires a working knowledge of the Enneagram. Stretching beyond who we’ve identified ourselves to be enriches the journey to living more fully who we are. Those with serious commitment to their spiritual lives will find this workshop of particular interest as we move toward our “yes” in our journey to the Divine Heart that awaits us and seeks us always.
Sandra Smith, M.Div. has been teaching the Enneagram throughout the southeast since 2002. Sandra creates and leads workshops and staff trainings using the Enneagram as a map for deepening self understanding. Additionally, she facilitates type and study groups, and works one-on-one with individuals as an Enneagram workplace consultant and also offers spiritual companioning. She brings a practical approach in presenting the material and offers it with a compassionate sensitivity.
Registration for the two-day workshop is $150. Early registration (before March 14) is $135. Additionally, individual one-hour sessions with Sandra will be available for workshop participants by appointment on Thursday, March 27 at $70. Registration is available online, here, or by registration form available here or from the church office. Read more on our webpage, here.

Junior & Senior High Youth RallyMarch 21-23 at the SECC in RobertRegistration by March 10
What is Rally? A retreat weekend for youth in grades six through twelve. The weekend is really two retreats in one, a Junior High Retreat and a Senior High Retreat. Rally is designed by the youth and adults on the Diocesan Youth Leadership Committee and staffed by youth and adults from that committee. Rally is designed to be a fun, relaxing retreat weekend that combines presentations by youth, small group discussion, and worship with games,
activities, music, and fellowship. Rally is designed to be welcoming to everyone who attends and the goal of the weekend is to make sure that everyone is included fully in the community. There is a talent show on Saturday night, and youth of all ages are invited to prepare an act to share with the community. At the talent show acts of all varieties are welcome! The weekend is casual, there is no need to bring “nice” clothes, however, we recommend bringing tennis shoes and athletic clothing for our Saturday afternoon outdoor activity. If you have any questions about Rally please email Amelia Arthur at [email protected].
Who can attend Rally? All youth from the Diocese of Louisiana, and friends of any religious background. While the topics presented and discussed will have a Christian focus we welcome all young people who have a willingness to participate fully in the weekend regardless of their religious affiliation. Who is involved in the weekend? Youth Rally is staffed by youth and adults from the Diocesan Youth Leadership committee, as well as guest musician Mike Peterson from Atlanta, GA. There will be a nurse present to administer all medicines, and other Youth Ministers, parents and adults will also be there to help supervise this amazing weekend.

A Sinful Amount of Lenten Disciplines to Choose From!Compline: Sundays at 7:00 p.m.May the Lord Almighty grant us a peaceful night and a perfect end.
From the ancient monastic practice of ending the day in prayer and praise of God, this serene service features a small group of
singers leading prayers and chants that may be joined as you desire.
The word “Compline” is from the same root as the word “complete.” As the last service of the day, it is the completion of our worship of God until the next morning, when we pray, “O Lord, open thou our lips.”
Its principal parts are a confession to clear the conscience, then a psalm, short lesson and hymn, all about quiet sleep and confidence in God’s protection. The climax comes with Simeon’s canticle of release and rest: “Lord, now let your servant depart in peace.” During the Middle Ages, many lay Christians took up a simplified monastic prayer discipline following Benedict’s monastic pattern.
When Thomas Cranmer organized the first English Prayer Book in 1549, he brought this lay-monastic routine to every parish, combining the morning offices into “Morning Prayer” and Vespers and Compline into “Evening Prayer.” These two church services developed a fine and rich Anglican tradition, but by the 20th century, the need for a simple, quiet service before sleep reasserted itself. In 1914, a service for Compline was approved for general use in the USA. In 1979, Compline became an integral part of our Prayer Book.
All are welcome to come experience one of the softly beautiful Anglican gems of worship. Come clothed in comfort, make yourself comfortable, and use the beautiful sounds and stillness to deepen your journey through Lent.
Lent Madness 2014Grit, determination, perseverance. These are the traits, along with the obvious one — holiness — that will be needed to win the 2014 Lent Madness Golden Halo. Based loosely on the NCAA basketball
tournament, Lent Madness pits 32 saints against one another in a single-elimination bracket. It is also a wildly popular online devotional designed to help people learn about saints.
Lent Madness began in 2010 as the brainchild of the Rev. Tim Schenck, an Episcopal priest and rector of St. John’s Church in Hingham, Massachusetts. In seeking a fun, engaging way for people to learn about the men and women who make up the church’s calendar of saints, Schenck came up with this unique Lenten devotion. Combining his love of sports with his passion for the lives of the saints, Lent Madness was born on his blog “Clergy Family Confidential.”
Starting in 2012, Schenck partnered with Forward Movement (the same folks that publish Forward Day by Day) executive director the Rev. Scott Gunn, and Lent Madness went viral, reaching over 50,000 people and getting mentioned in everything from the Washington Post to USA Today, to Sports Illustrated (seriously).
Here’s how it works: on the weekdays of Lent information is posted at www.lentmadness.org about two different saints. Each pairing remains open for 24 hours as participants read about and then vote to determine which saint moves on to the next round. Sixteen saints make it to the Round of the Saintly Sixteen; eight advance to the Round of the Elate Eight; four make it to the Faithful Four; two to the Championship; and the winner is awarded the coveted Golden Halo.
Beyond Religion: Ethics for the Whole WorldLive webcast from the National Cathedral
Washington National Cathedral and the Office of Tibet will welcome His Holiness the Dalai Lama to the Cathedral on Friday morning, March 7 at 8:30 a.m. (CST). This is the Dalai Lama’s fourth visit to the National Cathedral. The talk will be webcast live from Washington, D.C. to the CSF Atrium on the third floor of the Ministries Center.
Through a talk entitled, “Beyond Religion: Ethics for the Whole World,” the Dalai Lama will share his vision and path to leading an ethical, happy, and spiritual life and offer a road map to building a more compassionate and peaceful world. The program will also include a conversation between His Holiness and Cathedral Dean Gary Hall about the pursuit of peace. A question and answer session with the public will conclude the program.

We proclaim Christ crucified and risen, and invite you to join with us in ministry together in his name.
Increased costs to meet new postal regulations and fees have forced us to terminate automatic mailing of The MESSENGER to parish households. Readers are encouraged to use the online version to enjoy color photographs and graphics, easy links to contact information, maps, additional information and reference materials, and more. If you know of someone who cannot receive the electronic version, nor is able to pick up a paper copy available in the narthex, foyers and vestibules, please share their name with us so other arrangements can be made — or better yet: pick one up and bring it to them on a visit, yourself!
