Welcome to Messiah! Whether you’re a member, a returning guest, or maybe

this is your first time at Messiah, we welcome you to this time of worship. During

our time together, we hope that you experience the presence and love of God in

a profound and life-changing way! May the music we share stir you, may the

prayers we offer comfort you, and may the proclaimed Word of God challenge

you to live with a new passion and purpose. Again, we are honored that you

have chosen to worship here today. Let’s give God all glory and praise.

First-Time guests, we invite you to look through the “Welcome to Messiah”

brochure found in the attendance card slot on the pew in front of you. If you

have any questions, please talk to an usher.

Once we enter God’s House, we pray that our hearts are changed, and that His

perspective becomes ours; that we release the cares of this world, and bask in the

beauty of His holiness; that we give Him whatever burdens our heart, and find

the Spirit’s peace that passes all human understanding; that we learn more about

Jesus through His Word, and the joy that comes from a closer walk with the Lord.

If music is being played, we invite you to open the Bible in front of you, and focus

on His Word, or spend time in quiet prayer.

If a song is being sung, words are provided on the screens at the front of the

sanctuary. We invite you to sing along, or meditate on the song’s message.

O God, You are my God; earnestly I seek You; my soul thirsts for You;

my flesh faints for You, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.

So I have looked upon You in the sanctuary, beholding Your power and glory.

Because Your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise You.

So I will bless You as long as I live; in Your name I will lift up my hands. Psalm 63:1-4

Luther's Morning Prayer

I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have

kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this

day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into

Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel

be with me, that the wicked foe may have no power over me. Amen.

THE PRELUDE

THE GREETING

THE OPENING HYMN “With the Lord Begin Your Task” LSB 869

We find it hard not to notice others—what they have, what they earn, and how they live. What is worse, however, is that we constantly compare ourselves to others. Most of the time we figure that we are on the short end of the stick. But when it comes to the kingdom of God, there is no room for quick comparisons. Instead, we stand in awe of God’s rich mercy and generous grace. This is far more than we deserve. If we insist upon comparing our situation to others and complaining, God’s response is clear. Take what you have been given and leave. But if we let go of the comparisons, we find ourselves blessed beyond measure with His forgiveness, life, and salvation. “The early Christian Church devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer.” Acts 2:42

THE INVOCATION

P: We celebrate in victory today in the name of the Father, and of the Son,

and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen. This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in

it!

THE CONFESSION AND ANNOUNCEMENT OF FORGIVENESS

P: Hide not Your face from me.

C: Turn not Your servant away in anger,

P: O You who have been my help.

C: Cast me not off; forsake me not, O God of my salvation!

P: Let us confess our sins to God our Father.

C: I, a poor sinner, plead guilty before God of all sins. I have lived as if

God did not matter and as if I mattered most. My Lord’s name I have

not honored as I should; my worship and prayers have faltered. I have

not let His love have its way with me, and so my love for others has

failed. There are those whom I have hurt, and those whom I have

failed to help. My thoughts and desires have been soiled with sin.

P: Is this your sincere confession?

C: I am sorry for all my sins, and I ask for grace that I may do better.

Amen.

P: As you believe, so let it be. Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son

to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and

ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all

your sins, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

P: May He who began this good work in you bring it to completion at the

day of our Lord Jesus Christ. The peace of the Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

THE KYRIE

P: In peace, let us pray to the Lord.

P=Pastor C=Congregation In the Invocation, we "invoke" God’s presence by repeating the name in which we were baptized by the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. In the Confession, we bare our souls before the Lord, admitting our sins and accepting responsibility for the harm they caused in our relationships with God and with each other. (1 John 1:8-9 Rom. 3:23) The pastor then speaks God's Word to give the forgiveness Jesus won for us on the cross. (John 20:23) The Kyrie is a Greek word meaning “O Lord.” It is a cry to the Lord for help and strength. In ancient times, the crowds would shout, “Lord, have mercy” as the king entered their town.

Page 5: Messiah Lutheran Church Welcomes You to the Lord's House...Sep 20, 2020  · and I will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of joy; C: I will sing and make melody to the Lord.

5

P: For the peace from above and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord.

P: For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of

God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord:

P: For this holy house, and for all who offer here their worship and praise,

let us pray to the Lord.

P: Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.

THE HYMN OF PRAISE

The church has taken over this prayer to greet its King, Jesus Christ, in the church service. As the people long ago expected help from their king, so we Christians expect blessings from our Savior. When we sing the Hymn of Praise, we join the ranks of the angels in heaven and the militant Christian church on earth, lining up behind Jesus to go into battle against the powers of hell itself. One of the best ways to defeat the devil and his legions is to sing praises to God and proclaim Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, who is now seated at the right hand of the Father in power. “This is the Feast” is based on Rev. 5:12-13.

This is the feast of vic-to-ry for our God. Al– le - lu - ia.

In the Collect, The pastor and congregation greet each other as the angel greeted Mary at her annunciation. (Luke 1:28) The phrase also indicates the special relationship between the pastor and the congregation. We call this prayer a “Collect" because it collects the themes of the lessons and puts them into a prayer. The First Lesson is taken from a book of the Old Testament, and is found on page 58 in the pew Bible. It coordinates with the Gospel Lesson. The Gradual is from Psalm 27, found on page 460 in the pew Bible.

THE COLLECT

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: O blessed Lord, since we cannot count on anything we have done, give us

grace to count on Christ and His redeeming work upon the cross. As we

delight in His grace, so give us humility to receive Your generosity without

offense and trust in Your mercy alone for our salvation; through Jesus

Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one

God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

THE FIRST LESSON Exodus 16:2-8 2 And the whole congregation of the people of Israel grumbled against

Moses and Aaron in the wilderness, 3 and the people of Israel said to

them, “Would that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of

Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you

have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with

hunger.” 4 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I am about to rain bread

from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day's

portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law

or not. 5 On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be

twice as much as they gather daily.” 6 So Moses and Aaron said to all the

people of Israel, “At evening you shall know that it was the Lord who

brought you out of the land of Egypt, 7 and in the morning you shall see

the glory of the Lord, because he has heard your grumbling against

the Lord. For what are we, that you grumble against us?” 8 And Moses said,

“When the Lord gives you in the evening meat to eat and in the morning

bread to the full, because the Lord has heard your grumbling that you

grumble against him—what are we? Your grumbling is not against us but

against the Lord.”

THE GRADUAL

P: 1The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?

C: The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

P: 2When evildoers assail me to eat up my flesh,

C: My adversaries and foes, it is they who stumble and fall.

P: 3Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear;

C: Though war arise against me, yet I will be confident.

P: 4One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after:

C: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,

to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.

Page 8: Messiah Lutheran Church Welcomes You to the Lord's House...Sep 20, 2020  · and I will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of joy; C: I will sing and make melody to the Lord.

8

P: 5For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble;

C: He will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high

upon a rock.

P: 6And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me,

and I will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of joy;

C: I will sing and make melody to the Lord.

P: 7Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud;

C: Be gracious to me and answer me!

P: 8You have said, “Seek my face.”

C: My heart says to you, “Your face, Lord, do I seek.”

P: 9Hide not your face from me. Turn not your servant away in anger,

C: O you who have been my help. Cast me not off; forsake me not,

O God of my salvation!

THE EPISTLE LESSON Philippians 1:19–26 19for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus

Christ this will turn out for my deliverance, 20as it is my eager expectation

and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as

always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. 21For

to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. 22If I am to live in the flesh, that

means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. 23I am

hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ,

for that is far better. 24But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your

account. 25Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you

all, for your progress and joy in the faith, 26so that in me you may have

ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus, because of my coming to you again.

THE GOSPEL VERSE

The Epistle Lesson is generally from St. Paul’s letters, and is found on page 980 in the pew Bible. The Gospel Verse may change weekly or the ordinary verse is from John 6:68. We rise for the Holy Gospel as we would stand for Jesus Himself, since the Gospel is His living Word to us.

THE HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 20:1–16

P: The Holy Gospel according to Matthew, the twentieth chapter.

1[Jesus said:] “The kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house who went

out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. 2After agreeing

with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard.

3And going out about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the

marketplace, 4and to them he said, ‘You go into the vineyard too, and

whatever is right I will give you.’ 5So they went. Going out again about the

sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same. 6And about the eleventh

hour he went out and found others standing. And he said to them, ‘Why do

you stand here idle all day?’ 7They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’

He said to them, ‘You go into the vineyard too.’ 8And when evening came,

the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the laborers and pay

them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first.’ 9And when those

hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius. 10Now when those hired first came, they thought they would receive more,

but each of them also received a denarius. 11And on receiving it they

grumbled at the master of the house, 12saying, ‘These last worked only one

hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of

the day and the scorching heat.’ 13But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend,

I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? 14Take

what belongs to you and go. I choose to give to this last worker as I give to

you. 15Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do

you begrudge my generosity?’ 16So the last will be first, and the first last.”

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

WE CONFESS OUR FAITH-The Apostles' Creed

C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the

Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was

crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He

The Holy Gospel is selected according to the theme for today and coordinates with the First Lesson and the Sermon. It is found on page 825 in the pew Bible. We respond to the Word of God with an acclamation of praise, and then by confessing our faith. The Apostles Creed dates from about 75 AD and was used in the instruction of those to be baptized. We are confessing our personal faith.

rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right

hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge

the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian

Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE OFFERING ANTHEM “Rescue Story”

THE PRAYERS OF THE CONGREGATION

THE PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH

P: Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people

according to their needs. O God, our heavenly Father, You sent Your Son

Jesus Christ to be the payment for the sins of the whole world. O Lord, hear

our prayers.

C: We thank and praise You for Your countless blessings that You shower

upon us daily. We treasure Your steadfast love and care.

Prayer is one of the marks of the congregation gathered in worship, according to Acts 2:42.

There I was empty handed, crying out from the pit of my despair.

There You were in the shadows, Holding out Your hand You met me there.

And now where would I be without You?

Where would I be Jesus?

You were the voice in the desert, calling me out in the dead of night,

Fighting my battles for me-You are my rescue story.

Lifted me up from the ashes, You carried my soul from death to life,

Bringing me from glory to glory-You are my rescue story.

You are, You are, You are my rescue story. You are, You are.

You were writing the pages, before I had a name,

Before I needed grace, singing songs of redemption.

'Cause every time I ran away, You were louder than my shame.

You never gave up on me. You never gave up on me.

You are my testimony.

You never give up on me. Oh You never give up on me.

Oh this is my testimony.

You are, You are. Oh, You never gave up on me,

Never gave up on me, You are, You are.

Yeah, You are my rescue story.

P: Be with those who are suffering due to the impact of hurricanes and

wildfires in our nation. Give the first responders strength, courage and

protection as they work in these dangerous situations. Use them to show

Your compassion and love, as they serve You in powerful ways. May those

who have lost homes, loved ones and treasured possession embrace the

hope and assurance that You are always with them now and always.

C: Our hearts are heavy with their suffering and loss. Give us the strong

determination to help ease their worries by giving them support and

relief in meaningful ways. We thank You for all those who have already

given of their time, talent and resources to help those in need, thus

bringing glory to Your name.

P: Dearest Father, we pray for Your healing hand to touch those affected by the

coronavirus. Guide the doctors, nurses, researchers and caregivers as they

work to provide compassionate care. Lord, we pray that You will deliver us

from this pandemic.

C: Guide us towards Your purpose for our lives and how we can be Your

hands and feet in our world.

P: Lord, we pray that You would soften all hearts and minds with peace, love,

and understanding, so that all of Your people can live in unity and mutual

respect.

C: May those who embrace evil and hatred be defeated, so that goodness

can abound.

P: All of these things and whatever else we ask of You, our merciful Father, in

the name of Jesus, Your Son.

C: Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom

come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our

daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who

trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from

evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory

forever and ever. Amen.

THE BENEDICTION

P: The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you.

The Lord look upon you with His favor and give you His peace.

C: Amen.

More prayer requests are found in the Announcement Guide. Please take them with you to use for your prayer time this week. The Lord's Prayer is the prayer Jesus taught to His disciples and to us in His Word. (Matthew 6:9-13 & Luke 11:2-4) Then follows the Aaronic Benediction in which the Lord recognizes us as His people, putting His name on us, and fulfilling all promises in His name. (Num. 6:24-25 Matt. 18:19-20)
