Our Environmental EconomyChallenges and opportunities, global and local perspectives
This is a three-day Dublin City University (DCU) event to highlight the Marine and Environmental Sensing Technology Hub (MESTECH) research. The areas of environmental
monitoring, challenges within the industrial sector in engaging in research, and state of the art research from world class centres in the United States and Canada will be featured.
Environmental Monitoring Symposium.10.30 Tea/coffee
10.45 Fiona Regan, Dublin City University, Ireland “Welcome Address”
11.00 John Delaney, University of Washington, USA “Understanding the planetary life support system: Next generation science in the ocean basins”
11.45 John W. Devitt, Georgia Technical Research Institute, USA “Marine Monitoring Technology for Gulf of Mexico”
12.30 Randy Gillespie, Memorial University St. John’s Newfoundland, Canada “Mapping and monitoring our oceans: the role of sensors”
1.15 LunchWorkshop: Sensing - Changing the way we live our lives 14:00 - 17:00 This workshop will give an overview of how sensors are developed, the challenges they face in the environment, how data can be collected and managed and how systems can be deployed.
In the era of smarter cities, smarter oceans, smarter living we all have daily access and interaction with sensors and sensing systems. The workshop will show the importance of sensors in everyday life and where this tech-nology can take us.
Workshop Presenters: Lorna Fitzsimons, James Chapman and Timothy Sullivan. Register for this workshop online today!!
TEDx Public LectureSpeaker: Prof. John Delaney, University of Washington.Time: Doors open 6pm.TEDx event starts at 6.30pm.
TEDx was created in the spirit of TED’s mis-sion, “ideas worth spreading.” The program is designed to give communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level. This will be the fifth TEDx event in the Science Gallery’s series.
Prof. Delaney is a DCU International Visitor Awardee.
Industry Breakfast : How university research can facilitate industries in the environmental sector. Time: 7.30 - 10.30 am Speakers: Fiona Regan, DCU Dermot Diamond, DCUJohn Delaney, University of WashingtonIndustry Speakers
This breakfast will feature an open discussion with the following questions in mind:
• What are the barriers for small industries?
• What support systems are available to industries and what are the university challenges?
• How can the university fundamental research facilitate industries that need a fast delivery of technology - what is the compromise?
• Should universities be doing applied research at the expense of fundamentals - or does one rely on the other?
