— Metal Bulletin Zine P.O. Box 1339 Lake Stevens WA 98258 USA Metal Bulletin Zine #1-20: (2006-2009): Wisconsin #21-26: (2009-2010): Texas #27(2010)--now; Washington state All album reviews, news, updates below are by MMB, unless stated otherwise. ** The Shiva Hypothesis The Shiva Hypothesis is an extreme metal band from Holland. They sent in their “Promo 2015” recording, about which this publication reported not too long ago. Given the suggestive title of the recording, curiosity led to finding out more about the band’s plans, which indeed does include an album coming up. MvS, the band’s vocalist, explains more about The Shiva Hypothesis. Thanks for sending your music. What can you tell us to introduce the band to the readers? Who is answering this interview? It was our pleasure! To introduce ourselves; we are The Shiva Hypothesis, a four piece blackened death metal band from the east of the Netherlands, formed in 2012. The singer will be answering your questions today. You all live in Holland, correct? How are things for your band there? Correct, we all live in cities in the east of the Netherlands. I suppose we can say that we live in a favourable country to base a metal band in, one that allows freedom of creative expression and also has a somewhat active metal scene. We’ve played in several venues around the country, eliciting good responses all around. There definitely seems to be an audience for the specific kind of pandemonium we provide. You sent in your "Promo 2015." What are your plans in terms of recording?

The promo serves as a teaser for the album that we’ve got coming out this year. It is going to feature 7 tracks, but we’ve still got plenty of other material lying around. Plans are to immediately start recording an EP after the album is finished.

How would you describe your extreme metal? We’ve taken to adopting the moniker “blackened death metal”, which is a relatively accurate description of the music. In addition to the typical metal instrumentation for this genre we also make use of some more ambient sounds for added atmospheric emphasis. Since we’re all music-lovers first and foremost and have been around for some years there are many bands that have inspired us, ranging from bands in the black metal genre, like Behemoth, Gorgoroth and Ved Buens Ende, death metal bands like Death, Nocturnus and early Sentenced as well as non-metal artists like Fields of the Nephilim. Judging by the reviews we’ve received so far we have however succeeded in not sounding like a clone of any of these bands. What does your name mean? The Shiva Hypothesis is a theory that identifies patterns in mass extinction, followed by a period of fast evolution. To us, it symbolizes the

Page 3: Metal Bulletin Zine 85

3

concept of destruction and creation and how the two are intertwined. This very concept is the main philosophy of the band and can be found in artwork, lyrics and indeed, the music itself. Recently, in Europe, terrorism has been a problem. You have lyrics about philosophy, mysticism and esotericism. How do you view the problem of terrorist violence? My personal view, which I think many Europeans share, is that this recent surge of violence is best left unacknowledged. These assaults on the democratic lifestyle would succeed if we would start living in fear and avoiding the things we love to do. To link the situation to our theme; perhaps the world will be ready for a more peaceful time of creation, when this wave of destruction has passed. What would you say are the goals of your band? Our main objective will always be to create things that we believe meaningful and think worthwhile to share with other people (which can be music, lyrics, visuals, etc.) and in the meantime keep developing our means of expression and delve deeper into our musical and lyrical interests. If world domination and eternal glory can be achieved in the process that would of course be marvellous (!), but we much rather create something that is special to a select group of people than follow trends and/or compromise on things that are important to us to achieve short lived “success.” The future is hard to predict, but we will keep on making the necessary arrangements now to ensure a future in which The Shiva Hypothesis thrives. There are more releases on the way and we hope to cross the border for some gigs in the near future. In your opinion, can record companies help your band or would you prefer to be

independent? This is a delicate question. There are positive and negative sides to working with a label. We would be inclined to sign up with label, but would need to make clear arrangements about artistic freedom.

Having a band consumes time and money. Is it frustrating to invest money in your band? I reckon the band is a worthy thing to spend time and money on. The important thing to realize is that making the music that we like is above all a necessity/passion, in the sense that we would keep on doing it, whether or not we would make money. This however doesn’t mean that there isn’t a lot of hard work involved (that most people who simply click download probably aren’t aware of), so it is always great to hear that someone has enjoyed something you’ve created.

Since none of us are dependent on income from any of our musical endeavours, financial benefits only carry weight for us is in that they allow us to invest more and work faster. We do aspire to spread our music as far and wide as we can, but that stems from a desire to be heard, rather than a need to fill our bank accounts. In this attempt to distribute our music around the globe, we have found social media to be a helpful tool even if it can sometimes be a nuisance. What types of lyrics do you have for your future songs? Are there particular ideas that

Page 4: Metal Bulletin Zine 85

4

you seek to convey to the audience? As the lyricist, I find inspiration in many different fields. While the songs on the promo tackled mostly esoteric and mythological topics, the more recent works draw inspiration from works of psychology and anthropology. As for conveying ideas; we have deliberately chosen not to adopt a strong political, social or religious agenda (for various reasons which would probably require another interview). We try to create experiences that we hope will affect and inspire people. If this makes someone pick up a book on one of the subjects and/or to think the lyrics through and create their own interpretation, that is of course great. Finally, what news do you have? Thanks for taking an interest in our music and offering us this interview. Be sure to keep an eye out for our upcoming album and live shows! www.facebook.com/theshivahypothesis www.the-shiva-hypothesis.bandcamp.com www.soundcloud.com/theshivahypothesis www.youtube.com/channel/UCTpCTMOWY4rM0s0GNzP9tgQ www.twitter.com/Shivahypothesis THE END ** Abyssus (Greece) Abyssus is a band with the blood of the old school death metal running through their veins. It’s something that you can hear immediately. It’s not a coincidence that they sound inspired by classic death metal, it’s because they are and that’s their mission, too: to keep alive the spirit of the classic sounds in the present. In order to get more information, this publication presented some questions to the band and the following is what happened. Panos (guitars) and Kostas

(vocals) answer. At the end of the interview you will find the link to hear the album.

Greetings from the USA, friends! I have been listening to your album "Once Entombed.” The album is a compilation, but what are the details? (Panos): Hello from Athens! “Once Entombed” is a compilation that came via Transcending Obscurity and contains all material from the band's early days up until our first full length album (“Into the Abyss”). After “Into the Abyss” we have unleashed 3 new split releases. But we feel again the need to write new songs whenever we can say that the composition of the new album has already begun. What can you tell us about your band? What are objectives of your band for 2016 and the future? (Panos): Abyssus formed in 2011 by vocalist Kostas Analytis with the vision to play old school Death Metal in the veins of mighty Bolt Thrower, Obituary, Death, Massacre, Slayer, Sepultura (old) and Celtic Frost. The morbid

Page 5: Metal Bulletin Zine 85

5

inheritance of Abyssus includes 1 full-length album (“Into the Abyss”), 2 EP releases ("Monarch to the kingdom of the Dead" and "Summon the dead") and 6 split releases with various bands (Morbider, Nocturnal Vomit, Death Courier, Slaughtered Priest, DreamLongDead, Blessed by Perversion, Slaughterday, Slaktgrav). We want to do some live shows in the near future and after that we would like to record our next full- length album as well additional material for a new EP and some split releases. Who are the members of the band and what instruments do they play? Some people say that your vocalist sounds a bit similar to Obituary. Do you agree? (Panos): Abyssus is: Kostas Analytis (vocals and lyrics), Panos Gkourmpaliotis (guitars), Kostas Ragiadakos (bass), Yorgos St. (guitars and Ambients), Nikos M. (drums). There is no doubt concerning Κostas' influence of Obituary and John Tardy (one of the best death metal vocalists ever!!!), but in my opinion the vocals resemble also Celtic Frost (Tom G. Warrior), Asphyx (Martin van Drunen) and Death (Chuck Schuldiner). So there is no purpose or an accident around that. Actually, that's the way Kostas torments the fucking microphone. We are not fan boys of Obituary. We are maniacs of hot metal that came from 80s and 90s. Bands like Autopsy, Possessed, Obituary, Asphyx, Death, Bolt Thrower, Massacre, Death Strike, Celtic Frost, Slayer, Benediction made us grab the guitar and unleash the storm. Hail Abyss. How does the economic situation in Greece affect the metal scenes in Athens? What do you see happening? (Kostas): The economy here sucks. The crisis becomes bigger and bigger every single day and seems endless. Unemployment and a stream of taxes have brought population to the zero point. The last months we also have

thousands of immigrants arrived here, people who have left their homes due to war, and Europe has closed the borders saying they cannot accept more. We, the simple people, are trying to do our best for them to feel safe in our land, but they are thousands and in a bankrupt country such as Greece the things are not good for them, too. We are living the worst period as a nation since World War 2. Things here are very difficult if you are a musician to pay for rehearsals and is almost a miracle to have a budget to record an album. Although the scenery of poverty is damaging any hope, you can see new bands and musicians trying, through music, to reveal their pain and express their feelings, their anger for the situations they are living. Of course, the shows are few, but I believe that heavy metal is very strong in the underground, stronger than ever.

What are the topics of the lyrics of your band? (Kostas): Actually, the main theme is war and all that he causes but not just that. Many stuff is based in history, such as "Enthrone The Insane" which is talking for Roman king Nero or

Page 6: Metal Bulletin Zine 85

6

"Vision of Eternal Pain" which is written based on the no-sense bombing of Piraeus from the allies. Of course, you can realize by reading our lyrics through the years, that we are also talking for the worldwide political scene or pollution, too. Do you have other news about your band? (Kostas): There were many splits came out, almost the same period, with the release of ''Into The Abyss" and the compilation "Once Entombed..." so now is time for us to focus on composing the stuff for the next album which we decide to be released in 2017. Probably it will be entitled "Death Revival". There is not much thing to mention than saying that we have to keep on supporting the underground and our local scenes. Thanks for the interview. www.transcendingobscurity.bandcamp.com/album/once-entombed-death-metal www.facebook.com/Abyssus-144338552349700/ THE END ** NEWS: Rapheumet's Well The Exile release date: March 18th, 2016 label: Test Your Metal Records The sounds of Rapheumet's Well offer a progressive twist while keeping the music well within the genre of symphonic extreme metal with both extreme and melodic vocals. The band must have spent lots of time making the album because it is meant to be a professional recording that will appeal to the audiences into bands like Dimmu Borgir and Septicflesh. Below you will find some informative official information about the

band.

The band is originally from North Carolina, U.S. In terms of biography, the band gave the following summary of its history in an interview with Pest Webzine (You will find the link to the full interview at the band’s Facebook page.): “The root of this band begins about 16 years ago. The original members Jonathan Finney, Ralph Barnett and I (Joshua Ward) formed a project called Deadspeed. It was a turbid time in my life as I was only thirteen years of age and the other two were in their twenties. Due to “complicated” issues, I was forced to leave my home and staying with Jonathan and developing my music skills. The band was a sanctuary and to this day is my passion. Unfortunately, Ralph Barnette had to leave due to person issues but he was instrumental in the making of this band. We picked up Aaron Rogers who help introduce an ambient synth mix to our emerging symphonic metal sound. Tripp King and Daniel Presell joined in 2014 as our vocalist and guitarist. These two truly brought a unique and brutal element to our mix that is what represents us today. Recently, in light of the new album we picked up two more members Annette Greene and Hunter Ross. Annette had a remarkable voice as she has many awards in her High-school choir; she has since taken over as the keyboardist in light of Aaron’s recent departure. Hunter Ross, also being of High-

school age is an unbelievably talented guitarist, bringing a new technical aspect to our music. Each member comes from many walks of life including a nurse, an acupuncturist, skilled labor, a professional painter, a science teacher, all joined by our passion for metal.” Additional information on Facebook states: Formerly known as Blue Man's God, Rapheumet's well experimented with many variations and genre's of music including classical, ambience, (and of course) metal. Rapheumet's Well was created in March of 2008. The first demo was completed on june 11th, 2012. Rapheumet's Well members composed and produced the 2012 demo. The first full-length, final-production album was released on October 31st, 2014, and is entitled, "Dimensions". The album was recorded by the band members, mixed and mastered by the drummer Josh Ward (Nasaru) with a dab of preferential input from the other members. The album features 10 songs which (from first song to last song) progressively tells its own section of a larger story portrayed in the style of an epic. Future albums will continue this story, some in prequel and some in sequel to the album "Dimensions". www.facebook.com/Rapheumetswell THE END ** Septagon Septagon (Germany) is a new name, but the musicians involved are known for their work with their more established bands Lanfear and Atlantean Kodex. The 2016 debut album is “Deadhead Syndicate” and it’s classic-style

thrash with a technical/progressive side, in the way that certain 80s bands played music. The band has in mind the sounds of Watchtower and Realm and other bands known not only for skills but for songs, too. This interview was answered by Stef (guitars).

Greetings, Septagon! What can you tell us to introduce the band? SEPTAGON is the creature of LANFEAR's mastermind and guitarist Markus “Ulle” Ullrich, who joined forces with ATLANTEAN KODEX’ vocalist Markus Becker in 2013 to form an old-school band that blends the aggression of Exodus, Slayer and Testament with the melodic and technical appeal of bands like Forbidden, Heathen, Realm or Watchtower. The line-up was completed shortly after with Jürgen Schrank (LANFEAR) on drums and Alexander Palma on bass. Though Ulle is used to play all guitars on LANFEAR, he was determined to find a second guitarist for SEPTAGON in order to make band’s sound tighter, and the choice finally fell on Stef Binnig-Gollub (I am also answering this interview)

Page 8: Metal Bulletin Zine 85

8

With such skilled members, “Deadhead Syndicate” results thus an extremely versatile album with an amazing creative edge; constantly supported by a precise and dynamic rhythm section, the guitars draw fantastic patterns at a furious pace and the vocals sound convincing in these intense and torrid sounds as well as in the more-paced moments. In the end, as described by the band itself, “Deadhead Syndicate” is a METAL ALBUM with lots of riffs & melody. Fast, technical tracks, mid paced stuff and good hooklines.

You all live in Germany. How is life for Septagon in Germany? How is your music received? We live spread out in Southern Germany, not in the same city. So we meet for rehearsals to prepare live shows from time to time w/o our singer, because he lives too far away to join in person. Generally we practice and write songs remotely in our home recording studios and share ideas and files via Dropbox. We love the technical speed /thrash metal of the 80s where you really need the physical capability to play the songs like the bands mentioned above. We do not like the djent or whatever you would like to call the new stuff. We love technical playing challenges without losing the sense for melody.

Generally our music is received very well, as you can see in the already published reviews on our Facebook page and of course the German Metal magazines. (e.g. we were nominated Newcomer of the Month in Rockhard in February) Is there an audience for your music? What happened after the release of the album and what are your plans? We will look what will happen, the idea was to start a real band and not to treat it as a project. Markus U. and Jürgen will also release a new Lanfear CD this spring, but to my knowledge there’s no new release planned for Atlantean Kodex currently. And yes, both bands do have an audience here in Europe. Nevertheless everyone is really pumped to drive Septagon. But of course we are all old and experienced enough to know that we won’t become rockstars and will earn thousands of euros and make a living out of Septagon, we all have families and regular jobs and luckily do not depend on the commercial success of Deadhead Syndicate. But of course, you never know. I think we have generated some interest, because of the other band members playing in Lanfear and Atlantean Kodex, so the industry was keen on getting more details when it was clear that both Markus’ will record an album together. Initially they met at the Keep it True Festival in 2013 and agreed to write some songs together and eventually record them. When it came to the point to record the album and actually rehearse for live gigs Markus U. (Ulle) was looking for another guitarist to support him, that’s how I got involved. We know each other for more than 20 years.

Page 9: Metal Bulletin Zine 85

9

How would you describe the music you play? Like I described above, we love bands like Realm, Heathen, Forbidden, Testament, Exodus and so on, Bay Area Thrash with melody and we always wanted to do a record in that kind of style. We grew up with those bands and it was a lot of fun making this record as a kind of tribute to continue their heritage. These days no one does this kind of music anymore and we hope to generate some interest again, as we know there’s a community out there still loving this kind of style. That’s also the reason why we wanted to release the album on vinyl. Time and money are necessary for a band to function. How do you feel about the time and money that you put into the band? In what ways does the approval of an audience affect your desire to continue making music? To be honest the music itself is what matters. If you start calculating profit and loss in advance you shouldn’t even start. This starts with equipment, where the investment never pays off. But as stated before, it doesn’t matter. Because we create something, that’s the purpose of writing original songs, otherwise we would just play cover music. And creating your own stuff gives so much back emotionally that you don’t count time. Of course, if the feedback on our record or on live performances is good, this boosts your self-esteem, but primarily we don’t do that for anyone else to please, but for us. If in the end the costs are covered, or if we make profit, we love it, but we are not disappointed, if it doesn’t. What is your point of view on social media for your band? Social media is very important, as it provides a platform to do self-marketing and we are not depending on anyone else. The possibility of reaching thousands of people compared to

the old days where only word to mouth was possible is awesome and it’s definitely not a waste of time. Of course, also here you need to invest time, because you are not relevant, if you don’t. Our record company of course supports us with promoting the albums in magazines, etc. But there’s a major part where we are responsible ourselves in terms of marketing and creating awareness.

What type of lyrics seem to be prevalent in your songs? What is a "Septagon Conspiracy" or "Revolt against the Revolution" in your songs? Recently, in Europe, terrorist violence has been making the news. Is Septagon as a band affected by such things, such as in the lyrics for future songs? We have some critical lyrics about politics (Revolt Against The Revolution) and over surveillance and central control (Unwanted Company), but also other fictional stuff. We talk about aliens (Septagon Conspiracy) and a mafia structures (Deadhead Syndicate). We have an anti-war song (Exit Gunfire), one song about Jack the (Ripper) and of course the Secret Silver Panorama Machine. Markus B. writes all of the lyrics and he has a good sense for different topics. As he lived in the states for almost 5 years (San Francisco & New York) his English is awesome that we don’t need any professional copy edit or the like. For future songs I am pretty sure it will be a good mixture of latest happenings and fictional topics, pretty much the same you already find on Deadhead Syndicate. Maybe even as a concept album, who knows. Just a

Page 10: Metal Bulletin Zine 85

10

month ago he came up with a rough story board and already a song framework for the next album, we are really looking forward to write the corresponding music to his ideas. Your debut is called "Deadhead Syndicate." How was the experience of making that album? Is it worth it to make albums nowadays, since many people do not buy music anymore? How do you feel about getting many "likes" on Facebook, but not many people want to spend any money? The experience was phenomenal, as compared to other bands we walk the talk, meaning we actually did an album while many others only talk about it and you never see a release. See above, we definitely are working on new songs already and are looking forward to release it. Sure, there’s the risk that people illegally download the album instead of buying it, but we still have hope in the metal community. We buy music from our favorite bands still ourselves and think that a lot of people appreciate our work and support us when they buy it. There will always be a portion of people who don’t, but you cannot help. These guys won’t change their mind. You are right, we received roughly 700 likes since the Facebook page is online, but I doubt that all of them have already bought the album. But they come to shows, we played 2 concerts end of January where the response was awesome, so we are confident that there will always be people who like to support us and other fellow metal bands by buying our albums. So I think, not all is lost. And btw Vinyl kills the mp3 industry. Lastly, Is there anything else that you would like to mention? Besides the news that we already work on our next album, we hope to play some more gigs and festivals during the summer and the rest

of the year. Please like our Facebook page to stay up to date on the latest info. Thanks for the opportunity to have this interview. It was a pleasure to answer your questions. www.cruzdelsurmusic.com/index.php/2016/01/beware-septagon-reveals-a-conspiracy/ www.facebook.com/septagonband/ THE END ** NEWS: Murder Made God (Greece) Enslaved label: Comatose Music release: 15 April 2016

Below is the link to hear the album. Here's some official information.

OFFICIAL INFORMATION PHAZM is a pure mix of black and death metal with twisting rythms and twisted harmonies. Their fascination of death inspires them through necrophilia, spiritism, while their repulsion towards humanity and modern civilisation is expressed through a pagan cult of the Nature and European gods. PHAZM was formed in 2003 by French guitarist and vocalist Pierrick Valence, following the concept of playing black/death Metal with a rock ‘n' roll feeling. After three albums and several European tours, PHAZM has delivered a unique mixture of shuffled blastbeats, occult

and sharpened riffs, virtuoso guitar solos, and scary possessed vocals. They return with a new album, Scournful of Icons, deeply inspired by old-school black metal and Ásatrú. The album was composed after the death of Pierrick’s father. He has developped through this experience a vision of existence disconnected with monotheism. PHAZM is the Devil stick in the eyes of urban monotheists. www.thetruephazm.bandcamp.com/releases * NEWS: Mithridatic Miserable Miracle Kaotoxin Records Release: 11 March 2016 Mithridatic is extreme metal from France. Get in on the action below. See the official information. Formed in 2007, MITHRADIC (France) have released a numerous demos and brutalized European stages over the course of their eight year existence. In 2013, the band recruited Svart Crown drummer Kevin Paradis and began work on material for their debut, which was recorded in May of this year. Expect an unstoppable barrage of absolute heaviness, a psychotic Hell of tormented twistedness and an atrocious dose of full-on brutality somewhere along the lines of Ulcerate, Morbid Angel, Mayhem and Portal. Swirling all around like a sickening bad peyotl trip or voodoo seance gone wrong, twisting, bending levels of consciousness like drowning in a whirlwind of dark dimensions, MITHRIDATIC envision and explore the realms of terror, misery, pain, suffering, disease, madness and nihilism, through menacing, both crushingly

heavy and hyperblasting drums, possessed vocals, lightning fast and razor sharp guitar attacks and an apocalypticly rumbling bass low end: a roller coaster of the most evil kind, from suffocating belows to breathtaking beyonds. With influences ranging from José Mojica Marins’ movies to Henri Michaux, Antonin Artaud and Friedrich Nietzsche’s writings, with gifted drummer Kevin Paradis (SVART CROWN, live for MELECHESH, BENIGHTED, SETH, AGRESSOR…) and ultra-talented members, with a massive production courtesy of Sainte Marthe studio (ARKHON INFAUSTUS, DEHUMAN…) and a schizophrenic dissonant approach of blackened Death Metal, MITHRIDATIC release with “Miserable Miracle” a debut full-length that sounds like a bulldozer powered by rockets from Hell. Nihilist, brutal, fast, twisted, incredibly heavy… devastating!

AfterGod AfterGod is symphonic folk metal from Italy. Hear the music below and check out the official information.

AfterGod were founded in 2008 by Thomas Gualtieri (keyboards) and Stefano J.C. Correale (guitar), who wanted to form a new band after the dissolution of their former one. The first line-up included bass (the role was immediately assigned to Marzio Morganti), keyboards, guitar, drums and male vocals. The band scored moderate success, especially with the victory at the fourth musical contest "Bellaria Rock Festival" and in many other concerts between Riccione and Cesena. In November 2009, Virginia Baldini joins AfterGod, an event that allows the band to rework its sound and repertoire by referring it to the dualism between male voice (growl and scream) and female voice (classical and modern). Despite the continous changes in its line up, the band performed on several occasions at pubs and for events in spring and summer. Meanwhile, the absence of a male voice had forced the group to review its repertoire emphasizing the role of the female voice. Between 2012 and 2013 the band AfterGod suspended the performances to devote entirely to the recording of a four-track CD, titled "The Honourable Way". "The Honourable Way" was recorded with the

special guest Leonardo Dalla Via, vocalist of the folk metal band Vallorch. This year the band, supported by the young and capable drummer Yann Gualtieri, returns on the scene, determined to promote and engage with even more passion in its music.
