The Russian ruble is the only currency accepted for any type of payment

in the Russian Federation. The average Russian ruble exchange rate is

around 30 rubles for 1 US dollar and around 40 rubles for 1 Euro.

Upon arrival, you will need to present

to present an original and duly

apostilled copy of your secondary

school diploma (leaving examination

at the University.

According to the Russian legislation, you will need to obtain a (1)

Related questions:

Is the Russian climate as harsh as it is often described?

What clothes should I take with me for the academic year?

Often stereotypes exaggerate the harshness of the Russian climate. At

the same time, please remember that Russia is still a northern country

and winter temperatures might remain low for a significant period of

time. The summer, on the other hand, may bring extremely hot days.

For official occasions, we advise you to take one or two suits, shirts, ties

and shoes. As for casual clothes, take jeans, jumpers, trainers and other

clothes that you would normally wear. Take some warm clothing,

gloves, foot- and headwear for the winter season. Besides, don't forget

to take sunglasses and an umbrella.

Remember that the MGIMO University Sports Centre has a gym and a

swimming pool, so we recommend bringing sportswear, swimwear,

and flip-flops.

It is a good idea to have a small amount of rubles upon arrival (i.e. to pay

for public transport or a taxi from the airport to the campus). You

should, however, change most of your money in the city, as exchange

rates at the airport are slightly less attractive. Taxi fees are fixed and

usually you will need no more than 2000-2500 rubles to get to campus

from any airport (around 85 dollars, or 60 Euros). Public transport

prices are significantly lower, and the total cost of an Aeroexpress train

ride from the airport to Moscow and subsequent subway and bus

journeys to campus should not exceed 500 rubles (around 20 dollars, or

15 Euros).

Normally cash is used on campus, though some cafeterias accept credit

cards. ATMs can be found in several locations on campus, normally

near entrance halls.

As in many other countries, VAT (value added tax) applies to almost all

payments and purchases on the territory of the Russian Federation. In

Russia VAT size is 18% and can only be refunded to foreign tourists

coming to Russia for short stays.

Tips are common practice in Russian

cafés, restaurants and other public

places in case you enjoyed the

service. Average tip size is 10% of

your bill. At the same time, remember

that leaving tips is not your duty but

your right. Besides, tipping is not

practiced on campus.

Arrival in Moscow and getting to the campus

Moscow in the largest city in Europe, and this section will help you to

get to the campus smoothly upon arrival.

Related questions:

How many airports does Moscow have?

Which Moscow airport is better to use?

Moscow has three major airports: Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo and

Vnukovo. They are named after the towns where they are located.

Domodedovo, located 42 kilometres (26 mi) to the south of Moscow, is

Russia's largest airport. It has one multi-module terminal divided into

different zones for domestic and international flights, arrivals and

departures. Domodedovo serves numerous destinations and you will

very likely find regular service with your country to and from

Domodedovo. This airport has been chosen for flights by member

airlines of two largest global airline alliances — Star Alliance and

oneworld. Several discounter airlines have also chosen Domodedovo

as their Moscow airport.

It takes about one hour or slightly more to reach city centre or MGIMO

campus by car from the airport. You can also get on an Aeroexpress

train from Domodedovo to Paveletsky train station which departs

every 30 minutes.

Electricity throughout Russia is 220 volt/50 Hz. The plug is a two-pin

thin European standard. Should you need a converter (adaptor) for

your laptop or other devices that you intend to take with you, be sure to

bring your own, as most places in Russia do not offer them.

Related questions:

Which medicines should I bring to Russia?

Are there any specific allergies that may occur in Russia?

We strongly recommend you to buy a full medical and dental insurance

policy that will cover any emergencies during your stay in Russia. In

case the insurance acquired for supporting your Russian visa

application expires before the end of your studies, you will be able to

purchase a new insurance for the remaining length of your stay at

MGIMO Medical Centre.

Remember to bring any prescription drugs you may need. In case you

have an allergy, including pollen allergy, please make sure you bring

medication prescribed by your physician at home. Normally the

blooming period in central Russia starts in late April and ends in mid-

There are 9 train stations (“vok`zal” in Russian) in Moscow, normally

named after the main direction of the trains that depart from this

railway station. All the railway stations are located close to the centre of

the city and just outside subway exits.

The train stations linked by Aeroexpress trains with the Moscow

airports are Paveletsky (Domodedovo airport), Belorussky

(Sheremetyevo airport) and Kievsky (Vnukovo airport). You can

Aeroexpress to Sheremetyevo airport.

Sheremetyevo, located 29 km (18 mi) to the north-west of Moscow, is

Russia's second-largest airport. It has several terminals connected with

each other by passages or shuttle buses. Sheremetyevo is a hub for the

passenger operations of Aeroflot, Russian national carrier, and

SkyTeam alliance. As is the case with Domodedovo, it is highly likely

that Sheremetyevo is linked by regular service with your country.

It takes about one hour or slightly more to reach the city centre or

MGIMO campus from Sheremetyevo by car. You can also take an

Aeroexpress train from Sheremetyevo to Belorussky train station which

leaves every 30 minutes.

Vnukovo, located 28 kilometres (17 mi) southwest from the centre of

Moscow, is third-largest Moscow airport. It has two adjacent terminals.

Vnukovo is developing rapidly and gaining more and more

destinations, also several discounters have chosen Vnukovo as their

Moscow airport.

Vnukovo is the closest airport to MGIMO campus, which can be

reached within 30 or 40 minutes by car. You can also take an

Aeroexpress train from Vnukovo to Kievsky train station which goes

every 30-60 minutes.

Arrival in Moscow and getting to the campus

By Aeroexpress train, subway and bus

Red Aeroexpress trains service all the three Moscow airports. Use

airport navigation to locate the Aeroexpress train terminal. Usually

trains depart every 30 minutes (every hour in case of Vnukovo airport).

The total price for an Aeroexpress train ride from the airport to Moscow

and subsequent subway and bus journeys to campus should not

exceed 500 rubles (around 20 dollars, or 15 Euros).

also buy an Aeroexpress ticket

using ticket machines located

in Aeroexpress terminals or at

cashier desks. The standard

fare is 320 rubles.

The MGIMO University campus is located near Prospekt Vernadskogo

subway station (lower part of the red line). After arriving at one of the

Moscow train stations by Aeroexpress, you will need to use subway to

reach Prospekt Vernadskogo subway station. It will take approximately

half an hour to reach this station from any of the train stations serviced

by Aeroexpress trains.

Public transport tickets can be purchased at station booths or

Aeroexpress terminals. We recommend you buying a 90-minute all-

transport ticket (unlimited subway, bus, tram and trolleybus rides for 90

minutes) for the price of 50 rubles.

www.aeroexpress.ru

Later you will be able to purchase special one-month student

concession cards or top-up Troika cards for subway, bus, tram or

trolleybus rides (each ride costs up to 30 rubles). Also you can pay for a

bus, tram or trolleybus ride directly with the driver.

When you arrive at Prospekt Vernadskogo subway station, choose the

south-west subway exit (the one near the first coach of the train), and

after the turnstiles turn right and then left. After exiting the subway

station you can either walk on foot to MGIMO (approximately 15-20

minutes) or take bus 715 or 810. The bus stop is located near the

subway entrance and you can buy your ticket on the bus. Exit the bus at

the “MGIMO” stop, and you will see the MGIMO campus across

Lobachevskogo street. Cross the street using the pedestrian crossing,

turn right and walk around 200 meters until you see a 13-storey pale

building on your left. This will be your dormitory. Enter the dormitory

and register yourself in the lobby.

You will be staying at MGIMO Dormitory No. 2. It is a pale, 13-storey

building located along Lobachevskogo street, on the western end of

the MGIMO campus (see the scheme in the Getting Around on Campus

section).

The dorm provides accommodation for international students in

double rooms. All rooms are equipped with ensuite bathrooms.

Kitchens are located on each floor. Telephone booths are located on the

1st floor (please note that the 1st floor in Russia is the ground floor).

The price of accommodation is approximately 200 USD per month and

can be paid at the Gazprombank office on the MGIMO campus.

Accomodation must be prepaid for the upcoming semester or

academic year.

Accommodation will be available from 25 August till the end of your

examination period (next June).

Please let us know about your estimated arrival time before your

departure so that we can inform the University security. Upon arrival,

please report to the reception desk by presenting your ID. The security

guards should know that you are a new student and let you in. You will

then meet the commandant (komendant) of the dormitory, who will

register you, give you the room keys and show you to your room.

immigration card or use a small folder to keep all the important

documents. It is also highly recommended that you carry your

documents with you at all times while in Russia.

You have to re-register every time you leave the Russian Federation

and re-enter.

Please reserve seven days for each re-registration, as when

registering for the first time. When leaving Russia, your registration

will be checked at the border passport control. Expired registration

or the lack of registration will result in a 20 000-ruble fine (around

670 US dollars, or 500 Euros).

Remember that multiple violations will result in more severe fines

which, according to the Russian criminal legislation, may be as high

as 300 000 rubles. Also one might receive a non-visitor status for

three years. The University, as a legal entity, will also face fines that

are much higher than those for violators themselves.

Leading banks in Russia are: Sberbank, VTB24, Gazprombank, Rosbank,

Bank of Moscow, Alfa-Bank, Raiffeisenbank, UniCredit, and others.

Major credit cards are normally accepted at Moscow shops,

supermarkets, malls, pharmacies, etc. There are usually stickers on

doors with respective logos (Visa, MasterCard, Diners Club, etc.). At the

same time, small shops are highly likely not to accept cards for

payment. If you intend to pay by credit card, we advise that you always

inquire about such a possibility when you enter a shop, café or

restaurant. If cards are not accepted, there will most likely be an ATM

While studying in Russia, you may become familiar with the country's

rich cultural heritage and great natural variety that place Russia among

the most popular tourist destinations in the world. The country

contains 23 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Major tourist routes in

Russia include a travel around the Golden Ring of ancient cities, cruises

on the big rivers like Volga, and long journeys on the famous Trans-

Siberian Railway. Diverse regions and ethnic cultures of Russia offer

many different food and souvenirs, and show a great variety of

traditions, like Russian banya, Tatar Sabantuy, or Siberian shamanist

rituals.

The Golden Ring is a 700 km long route around architectural and

artistic riches of old Russian towns. It forms a circle of big and small old

towns which have preserved their great historical and architectural

wonders. The route goes through the ancient Russian cities, such as

Vladimir, Suzdal, Rostov, Pereyaslavl-Zalessky, Kostroma and others.

Yaroslavl is one of the brightest points of the Golden Ring and one of

the most beautiful cities in Russia on the banks of the Volga River. It is

an ancient city well known for its 16th and 17th century architectural

monuments. The name of the city is associated with many legends and

historical events. It was founded in 1010 by Prince Yaroslav the Wise

and was named after him.

Suzdal is one of Russia's oldest towns, dating back to 1024. It was once

the capital of several Russian principalities and has many examples of

early Russian architecture. It is probably the one of the most interesting

towns of the Golden ring with 200 monuments of history and

architecture, 20 ponds, 27 belltowers and 4 pearls of Russian culture

taken in the UNESCO World Heritage list. Today Suzdal operates as an

important tourist centre with nearly 1 mln tourists visiting the town

annually. Suzdal is officially protected from the industries, so the old

monasteries and beautiful churches standing on picturesque green

hills are well-kept.

Saint Petersburg is Russia's second

largest city and the “cultural capital” of

Russia. Wide range of historical places

and cultural objects are located there,

such as the vast Hermitage Museum,

the baroque Winter Palace, former

official residence of Russian emperors,

as well as the neoclassical Marble

Palace. The Alexander Nevsky Lavra,

intended to house the relics of St.

Alexander Nevsky, is an important

centre of Christian education in

Russia. It also contains the Tikhvin

Cemetery with graves of many notable Petersburgers. You can get to St.

Petersburg by Sapsan high-speed trains that depart from the

Leningradsky train station.

Yasnaya Polyana, , is an estate located 200 km

south of Moscow. It's beautiful, sprawling, and very Russian, attracting

thousands of tourists every year. The best time to go is Saturday or

Sunday, when trains leave at 9 a.m. from Moscow's Kursky train station

and go directly to the estate.

back, trams – in the front. Cross the streets only using pedestrian

crossings. Be careful and make sure drivers see you and stop in

front of the crossing to let you cross the street.

Russian winter is very different! Russian winter means not only lots

of fun, but also brings slippery streets. Be careful when walking in

the street in icy weather, falling on ice or tarmac may be painful and

harmful. Also beware of ice and snow that might fall from non-

cleaned roofs of buildings in the city.

Shaking hands ritual is sensitive in Russia! Men are used to shake

hands when they meet for the first time on a certain day. If you are

wearing gloves, it is better to take one off for hand-shaking,

otherwise it might be taken as a sign of disrespect.

If you are going to your Russian friend's place, it is better to take

something as a present, i.e. chocolate or some snack. It is a long-

time custom and a sign of respect towards the host.

Selling alcohol and tobacco to minors is illegal! Alcoholic drinks

and cigarettes are only sold in Russia to persons older than 18 years

old. Besides, alcohol in Russia is not sold from 22:00 till 11:00.
