Shark Fights 13 was definitely not unlucky! With the most prominent fight card in Shark Fights history more than 5,000 fans plus many more on pay-per-view watched well known and highly regarded fighters from all over the world. The pay per view card showcased co-main event fighters, Rameau “The African Assasin Souk-oudjou vs. Houston Alexander as well as main event bout of Keith Jardine vs. Trevor Prangley.

Shark Fights13 definitivamente no era mala suerte! Con la tarjeta de peleas más importante en la historia de Shark Fights, más de 5.000 fanaticos y además muchas más en pay-per-view, vieron bien conocidos y muy apreciados combatientes de todo el mundo. Homecoming fue definitivamente una gran ocasión. Caprock High School, por primera vez en la historia reciente comenzó su temporada de futból americano 3-0, durante el juego con San Angelo Lakeview. Tanto la escuela y la comuni-dad son animados y entusiasmados con el futuro próximo. El entrenador Parr y su personal siguen el movimiento ascendente hacia el éxito del futuro.

Homecoming was definitely a grand occassion. Caprock High School, for the first time in recent history started off their footall season 3-0 as they played host to San Angelo Lakeview. Both the school and the community are lively and excited about the near future as Coach Parr and staff continue the upward move-ment towards future success.

25 years! That’s a long time anyway you put it. Mary and the staff of La Frontera restaurant didn’t hold back as fam-ily, friends and neighbors all took part in the celebration. With music, food and plenty of warm weather La Raza took to the streets and had a great time celebrating local Amarillo Latino interests. The event helped raise funds and awareness for the local chapter of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

25 años! Eso es un rato en cual quier moda que usted lo pone. María y su personal del restaurante La Frontera no se contuvo mientras familia, amigos y vecinos participaron en la celebración. Con música, comida y un montón de tiempo caluroso La Raza salieron a la calle a celebrar los lintereses locales de Amarillo. El evento ayudó a recaudar fondos y concientizar sobre la Cámara Hispana de Comercio.

Amarillo’s Chamber of Commerce once again let loose with the Good Times Bar-B-Que event. Sponsored locally by Tyson, Coors Light and Artic Glacier; over 8,000 patrons enjoyed food, drink and live music. The two day event is a staple for the Amarillo business community.

La Cámara de Comercio de Amarillo, una vez más soltaron con su evento anual, Good Times Bar-B-Que. Patrocinado localmente por Tyson, Coors Light y Artic Glacier, más de 8.000 usuarios disfrutaron de ali-mentos, bebidas y música en vivo. Life throws many obstacles our way. As I sat down and got to know more about people who have over-come so much it made me realize just how good life really can be and how the little things in life are important. Focusing on the negative takes way more energy than looking at life from a brighter side. Wouldn’t it be better to be known for what we are for rather than what we are against?

History at times is about tradition! So as we cel-ebrate Independence this month for many Latin countries and we honor Hispanics all over the world during Hispanic Heritage Month let us remember that; though we are different we are all the same in more ways than we think. Handicaps, in whatever form they take don’t necessarily mean de-feat, and dreams, however big they may be are can be accomplished if you just start after them. It’s been a fun 6 months so far. We at Mi Revizta have many more goals to accomplish. Our website is coming soon. Our goal to become a regional publication is taking shape, and there is more excitement and ex-pectation for what we are doing not only within the Hispanic community, but from people and organiza-tions throughout Ama-rillo and the surrounding areas. We look forward to sharing in all of it with you!

Homecoming’s are special inmany ways. Expectations are high and seeing fam-ily and friends is definitely heartwarming. Hearing from Amarillo native Laura Rojas was fresh, lively and insightful. There’s definitely more than meets the eye!

Regresando a casa es especial en muchas perspec-tivos. Las expectativas son altas y viendo familia y a los amigos es, sin duda alentador. Oyendo de una nativa de Amarillo, Laura Rojas estaba fresca, viva y perspicaz. Hay definitivamente más de lo que parece!


A few minutes is usually all Laura Rojas has to offer. “It seems like sometimes I’m all over the place,” she shares as we sit down to our first of two interviews atRoasters coffee shop. “I’m so happy to be home!” an em-phatic and surprisingly upbeat Laura shares as we settle in for a few moments of conversation. Getting to know one of our area’s more prolific per-sonalities can be intimidating. “I’m usually the one asking all the questions,” shares Laura. We started off trying tofigure out what happened to a mutual friend from high school. Guess it’s just built into her to find out what’s hap-pening in and around her world. There is no shortcut to her success. Hard work and determination are staples in this professional’s life. “Family is very important to me. I have two boys, 20 and 17 years old. Being a single mom and following my passion to be a FBI agent led us to Huntsville, Texas. I was told Sam Hous-ton State University had one of the best criminal justice departments. Those years alone brought us together and taught us that we were all we had. It gave us a cohesive unit to depend on. We built a good unit and it taught my boys how hard work, determination and perseverance all lead to a successful life as well as helping us make a difference.” “You know, just learning to be a good person over all makes a ton of difference. We all can spend so much time focusing on the negatives of life. I choose to spend it by encouraging and finding the common good in all things. Life’s too short to miss out on positive moments. I’m doing so much more than just anchoring the news. You can take everything away from me but in the end I’m still Laura.”Laura highly regards her community. “I want people to know that I’m here for them and their cause.” My position in media allows me to have a greater reach and hopefully a bigger impact for certain causes. One area that I’m excited about is seeing young La-tinas develop. I see them being excited about their heritage as well as developing into productive citizens. Our youth is key to a successful future. I want to feel like I did what I could to lend a hand in that development. I can relate to a lot of the same things they are facing. “I take great pride in the fact that Latinos, especially women, come up to me andlet me know they are so proud of what I’m doing. They let me know that I’m definitely giving so much back to the com-munity. I get so much out of what I do. I’m humbled to know that I’m so highly looked upon, but in all honesty I feel that I’m doing exactly what my purpose is at this time in my life” A recent bout with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia also known as CML, caused her to take a second look at her priorities. “I used to get up and be like some other people, what’s in it for me? Dealing with the disease taught me to appreciate those small things in life that we can overlook when we think we’re healthy.”

Mi posición en los medios de comunicación me permite tener un mayor alcance y es de esperar un mayor impacto de ciertas causas. Un aspecto que me entusiasma es ver a las jóvenes latinas desarrollar. Veo la emoción de su patrimonio, así como en desarrollo se conviertan en ciu-dadanos productivos. Nuestra juventud es clave para un futuro exitoso. Quiero sentir como yo hice lo que pude para echar una mano en ese desarrollo. Puedo relacionarme con muchas de las mismas cosas que se enfrentan. “Me enorgullece el hecho de que los latinos, especialmente las mujeres,me hacen saber que están tan orgullosos de lo que estoy haciendo. Me dejan saber que yo esoy definitivamente dando tanto a la comunidad. Saco mucho de lo que hago en la comunidad. Estoy honrada de saber que estoy tan altamente considerada, pero con toda honestidad, me siento que estoy haciendo exactamente lo que mi objetivo es en este momento en mi vida “ Un reciente ataque con leucemia mieloide crónica también conocida como LMC, la hizo tomar un segundo vistazo a sus prioridades. “Frankamente era como las otras personas, ¿qué hay para mí? Lidiar con la enfermedad me enseñó apreciar las pequeñas cosas de la vida que nos pu-ede pasar por alto cuando pensamos que estamos sanos. “


I meet Laura for our second interview at her place of employment, News-Channel 10. After driving what seems like to Dumas (smiling....) we jump rightinto the afternoon taping of the 6:00 o’clock news. Being inside a live broadcast is fun and seeing a professional at work is intriguing. Laura is nothing but professional even in the midst of an all male work crew. Seeing her pay attention to the smallest of details in her notes makes you wonder if Laura is all work. The price of celeb-rity of sorts hasn’t come without a cost. “I just ab-solutely love the days that I can just be me.” Aside from the obvious of being anchor of Amarillo’s high-est rated newscast, Laura’s involvement in a variety of community based events is just part of her lifestyle of TV anchor woman. “I share

two cultures, being born in the United States as an American and having my Latino culture in the fact that my parents were born in Mexico. Being Latina affords me an opportunity to be who I am and enjoy all that my heritage and culture brings to the table. My work and involvement with the news gets me involved with people from an array of backgrounds; socio-eco-nomic, racial, educational, etc. I see and talk to every-one. The beauty is that I don’t limit or allow myself to think on the negatives of life. “You have to put yourself out there. Things are going on. Life doesn’t stop happening just because we do or don’t involve ourselves.” That’s the thought we push forward with as we speak about the change that will come upon Amarillo. “The youngergeneration will definitely

Estar dentro de una emisión en directo es divertido y ver a un profesional en el trabajo es interesante. Laura es más que profesional, incluso en medio de un equipo de puro hombres. Mi trabajo y la participación con la noticia me involu-crá con la gente de una gran variedad de orígenes, socio-económicos, raciales, educativos, etc. Veo y hablo con todos. My question would be, what is stopping us from working together. Why must everything be so controver-sial. We need to get past the point that the only thing that defines us culturally is what we’re against. Laura is emphatic, “This isn’t about me. I don’t want people to think that I’mbeing self promotional.” With a high profile job, and a con-stant presence in the livingrooms of several thousand homes it’s easy to get into the mindset that it is all aboutme. “Being involved and be-ing a positive force. That’s what I hold in highesteem for me as well as for others.”!

Hispanics are many things; and funny is definitely one of them. Catching up with Amarillo resident and funny man Joe Carde-nas, a.k.a. The One Arm Mexican @ EGBG’s comic night was definitely a breath of fresh air. With so many negative things surround-ing our culture, being able to laugh at our-selves is definitely a measure of humility. “Growing up, I always wanted to be left handed!” shares Joe! “No, but really, I wanted to present myself with enough dignity to prove not just to everyone else, but myself as well that a disability isn’t an excuse for failure. There are many things that can cause us to stumble in life, can you imagine if I had been born with only one leg!!” It’s not only his good nature about life, but also his ability to capture an audiences attention and cause a reaction of laughter that roughly the 300 plus people who witnessed his act would agree with. “Life isn’t easy, isn’t suppose to be. I’ve just made the best use of it that I know I can. My friends would always tell me that I was funny. It takes a lot of courage to stand in front of strangers, let alone people I know and perform. Comedy basically has been a form of survival for me. Being different and deal-ing with my disability could have caused me to do one of two things. Roll up in a ball and go away or face the facts and make something of myself. It’s kind of a self therapy.” Growing up in Chicago and then moving to Amarillo at the age of 12, Joe pretty much considers himself an Amarilloan. “Chicago is my home town, but I’ve got roots here now. It definitely was a culture shock of sorts coming here” Married now for 3 years to wife Aleshia and having a daughter,Lily Isabella, gives Joe a chance to continue a legacy of Hispanic heritage. “I want my daughter to know about and appreciate all the things that make being Latino a great thing. Our beliefs, our fam-ily values, the food (laughing)! She deserves the ability to shape her life around the good things in life.

Having a day job doesn’t make per-forming easy. “I work a normal job. As normal as can be. I have a built in hook for making people laugh (pointing to his miss-ing left arm). I’m not trying to make this too complicated or cause people to think too much. Comedy should make you laugh not think. My show is pretty PG-13. The normal things are obvious; race, life situations, family life, etc. There isn’t much that’s off limits in comedy. Things happening around us always have two sides to the story I try to focus on the comical side of life. We all need a good laugh every once in a while!

Los hispanos son muchas cosas, y ser curiosos es de-finitivamente una de ellas. Ponerse al día con un residente de Amarillo Joe Cárdenas, también conocido como, El Mexicano Armado en el clúb EGBG’s fue definitivamente un soplo de aire fresco. Con tantas cosas negativas que rodean nuestra cultura, ser capaces de reírnos de nosotros mismos es, sin duda una medida de humildad. “Al crecer, yo siempre quise ser zurdo!” Explica Joe! -No, pero en realidad, yo quería presentarme con la dignidad suficiente no solo para demostrame a mi mismo sino a to-dos que la discapacidad no es una excusa para el fracaso. Hay muchas cosas que pueden hacernos tropezar en la vida, ¿te imaginas si hubiese nacido con una sola pierna? “No es sólo su naturaleza buena, sino también su capacidad de capturar la atención de las audiencias y provocar una reacción de risa que aproximadamente más de 300 personas fueron testigos y que estarían de acuerdo. “La vida no es fácil, no se supone que debe ser. Solo ago el mejor uso de ella, y sé que puedo. Mis amigos siempre

me decían que yo era gracioso. Se necesita mucho valor para pararse enfrente de extraños, incluyendo a la gente que conos-co. La comedia básicamente ha sido una forma de superviven-cia para mí. Marcar la diferencia y hacer frente a mi discapaci-dad podría haber provocado que haga una de dos cosas. Ruede para arriba en una bola y desaparesca, o enfrente los hechos y hacer algo de mí mismo. Habiendo crecido en Chicago y moviendose a Ama-rillo a la edad de 12 años, Joe casi se considera de Amarillo. “Chicago es mi ciudad natal, pero tengo raíces aquí. Tan normal como pu-ede ser. He construido un gancho para hacer reír a la gente (señalando su brazo izquierdo que le hace falta). No estoy tratando de hacer esto demasiado complicado o causar que la gente piense demasiado. La comedia debe hacer reír, no pensar. Mi show es bastante PG-13. Lo normal es evidente; raza, situaciones de la vida, la vida familiar, etc... No hay mucho que este fuera de los límites de la comedia. Las cosas que suceden a nuestro alrededor siempre tienen dos caras. Trato de enfocarme en el lado cómico de la vida. Todos necesitamos una buena carcajada de vez en cuando!

It’s not often we meet or get to talk to people who have as much to offer life as Mikall-Branch Flores. The fact that he’s an accomplished writer, business man and overall good guy doesn’t keep him off limits to the general public. Making time to talk after recent travels for his new book, we sat down to ask a few questions. “I’m truly a blessed man! I consider myself many things but first and foremost I have to say; of all that I’ve accomplished or will accomplish, nothing would have been possible without my relationship with Christ. Jesus is definitely a friend of mine!” That enthusiasm carries over into the rest of our conversation. “I’m a people per-son. When time allows, you can find me at the airport or the mall, any public place. I’ll just stare for hours. My inspirations come from that. My creativity and my endless day-dreaming cause me to “wonder” about things and that lends itself to my books.” “I’ve traveled a lot to get to where I am at now. Family brought me to Amarillo, Texas. I grew up in the barrio, still live in the barrio, I’ll be barrio for the rest of my life. I came back here to take care of my ailing grandpar-ents who have now since passed. I still live the same house my grandfather built over 75 years ago.”

Still that didn’t stop Mikall from going to Los Angeles, California to pursue his dreams. First delving into acting and singing, he was in a band, wrote lyrics, to finally getting into school at University of Southern California and taking a creative writing class that set him on his journey. “The instructor reminded us that all things come full circle. That’s the path I’ve been on. I want to complete my circle at any cost!” An artist in the true sense of the word, Mikall continues to express his life story through his books. “My most recent publication, “Introducing Oowie Kakui”, is a great example. It takes everything about being who I am into consideration. Being Latino, living in Amarillo (main character is from Amarillo), the struggles and hardships of growing up poor, you name it it’s in there. “I just want to continue to encourage people to move forward with there dreams. We live in an unjust world some time. It’s not fair. It takes hard work and a passion to follow your dreams. Being Latino shouldn’t be a derailment. There is enough opportunity for everyone.” As co-owner of Old Buster’s Lounge, a local watering hole, Mikall sees everything and just about every-one. “I’d like to think that people who know me can say that I’m the same person each and every day.” Becoming who he is today has been a test of trial and error. “It definitely is a journey that I’m on. There have been count-less times that I thought about giving up. It’s been my relationships with my closest friends, people who care about me, who want to see me succeed that have allowed me to grow into the person you see today.”

Mantuvo ese entusiasmo por el resto de la conversacion. “Soy una persona que le gusta la gente, cuando el tiempo me lo permite me encuentras en el aeropuerto, en el centro comercial o en cualquier lugar publico, me quedaria alli por horas, de alli viene mi inspiracion. Mi creatividad y mi interminables suenos causan que maraville las cosas que se prestan a mis libros. “He viajado mucho para llegar a donde estoy. La familia me trajo a Amarillo Texas. Creci en el barrio, aun vivo en el barrio, y sere barrio por el resto de mi vida. Regrese aqui para cuidar a mis abuelos en-fermos quienes ya murieron.

Aun vivo en la misma casa construida por mi abuelo hace 75 anos.Todo esto no detuvo a Mikall de ir a Los Angeles, Cali-fornia para perseguir sus suenos. Primero profundizando en actua-cion y canto, estuvo en una banda, escribio liricos hasta que finalmente se inscribio en la escuela en la Universidad de Southern California y el tomar las clases de escritura creativa lo puso en su jornada. “El instructor nos recuerda que todas las cosas vienen en circulo lleno, ese es en el camino que he estado. Quiero completar mi circulo a cual-quier costo.”

No muy seguido conocemos o hablamos con personas que tienen mucho que ofrecer a la vida como Mikall BranchFlores. El hecho de que sea un logrado escritor, hombre de negocios y so-bretodo buen ser humano no lo mantiene fuerade limites con el publico en general, haciendo tiempo para hablar despues de su reciente viaje de su libro. Nos sentamos y le hicimos algunas preguntas. ‘Soy verdaderamente un hombre bendecido! Me considero muchas cosas pero primero y antes que nada tengo que decir,de todo lo que he realizado o realizare, nada seria posible sin mi relacion con Cristo. Jesus es definitiva-mente un amigo mio!’

Un artista es el verdadero sentido del mundo y Mikall continua expresando la historia de su vida atravez de sus libros. “Mi mas reciente publicacion, ‘Presentando a Oowie Kakui’ (introducing Oowie Kakui), es un gran ejemplo. Toma todo sobre ser quien soy en consideracion. Ser latino, viviendo en Amarillo (el personaje principal es de amarillo), la lucha y el sufrimiento de crecer pobre. Tu me haces una listsa y esta alli. Solo quiero continuar moti-vando a la gente que se mueva adelante con sus suenos. Vivimos en un mundo aveces injusto, no es parejo. Toma trabajo y pasion seguir tus suenos. Ser latino no deberia de ser desencarrilamiento, hay suficiente oportunidad para todos.” Como copropietario de Old Buster’s Lounge, un pozo regadero local, Mikall ve todo y sobre todos. “Me gusta pensar que las personas que me cono-cen puedan saben que soy la misma persona cada y todos los dias. Viniendo ser quien soy ahora ha sido una prueva de tratar y equivocarme, esto es definitivamente la jornada en la que estoy. Han sido contadas veces que pense en rendirme. Pero las relaciones con mis amigos cercanos, gente que se preocupa por mi, que quiere verme exitoso, son los que me han permitido crecer en la persona que vez ahora”
