“Loss of Aura”Video

Prof. M. Petranzan

This video production moves from the original idea to create a video re-interpretation of the W. Benjamin original writings; the mirroring techniqe used for the shoots, suggests that contemporary architecture reflects itself without distortions and modifications, the only readable meaning is the bare appearance; also the black and white post-production is used to avoid any watcher distractions during the reading process of the movie. The criticisms towards those public architectures (Piazza Republica e Piazza Monte Grappa in Varese, Italy) moved from the observation that the plans of both places don’t work properly, they don’t offer to the visitors a real environment, a place where stay and pass, but they are only a large hole in the urban frame, generated from a bare speculation, in the ending of the movie a contrast was offer from the historical promenade, in the centre of the city, and its specific and correct dimensions, this promenade offers to the visitors a place where walk, stay or live the space and the city. To increase the meaning of the images I composed by myself the soundtrack using only an electric guitar and an electric bass, and trying to create the missing sensations.

D.I.Y. Residential HouseMaamekrobo (Ghana)

Prof. E. Caravatti, prof. C. Magni

The subject of the project was to create a residential unit for a typical family of Ghana. The total cost of the building had to stay under 10000 dollars, using, as much as possible, local or compatible materials, mounted by local techniques. To reach that goal I studied especially North African construction methods, particularly Hassan Fathy writings, but I didn’t want to use directly the “Nubian dome” in the project, because in Ghana there isn’t the appropriate knowledge to build it, so I designed a modular structure made by a grid of reinforced concrete columns closed with a hand made “adobe” bricks masonry. The top enclosure was made by a simple structure of local wood beams covered by a durable steal roof. To avoid the risk of overheating caused by the metal roof, I put an air space between the roof and the rooms, and I designed an hand made ceiling formed by a grid of bamboo reeds mounted on a timber frame and covered by a layer of raw soil with a bit of Portland concrete. I tried to realize a living unit according to the real local needs and possibilities, without unreal considerations about the local knowledge. I tried to create a link between their needs and my European knowledge. Technology isn’t only a construction method or a specific material, but a way to make human spaces.

µ Modular Standalone OfficeMilan (IT)

Prof. G. Brunetti

The reason of this project was to realize a practical version of what I studied during the technological construction techniques course. The goal of the project was to design a city office, with a good thermal behaviour, low-cost construction method and it must be fit with two standard car parks (5.00 m x 2.50 m each). I designed a solution with two floors above ground, with a concrete block supporting structure, mixed with two timber floors structures. Concrete blocks helped me to obtain a solid structure, and two wide radiant surfaces, also a good thermal insolation, while timber frames for the floors was light and easy to mount. I focused my attention on the power consumption of the building, designing exterior walls with a good insolation, they were a timber frame filled with cork panels, the interior face was plasterboard and for the exterior one I have chosen a plastic facade. I tried to give a good confort to the interior spaces, despite the dimensions.

“Milan: The Future of the Roots”Ferrara (IT) Workshop

Prof. Arch. M. Dezzi Bardeschi

How many people know that Milan was an imperial Roman city?... Not so much for the truth; actually Milan, Mediolanum, that means “land between”, was the capital of the Western Roman Empire. It has a lot of monuments and representative buildings, for example, the famous sequence of columns in front of St. Lorenzo Church, comes from the Jupiter’s Temple, placed on the current Duomo location. As a result of that, Milan Archeological Museum has an impressive quantity of archeological finds; recently for the 2015 International Expo, Milan Municipality has expanded the actual Museum building, located for an half in an ancient monk kiosk, and for the remaining part in a 60’s museum expansion, with the renovation of a closer building, connected with the oldest part by a garden. The problem was to connect the museum and its expansion with the Imperial Palace ruins, located 100 meters far, along Brisa street. We started our workshop from there; I focused my attention on that need, and tried to give to the museum both a link to the palace ruins and a new symbolic entrance. In order to achieve these goals, I designed a subterranean structure, working like a tunnel, to connect the two spaces and also to obtain a new space for specific temporary exhibition; that space grows to the surface and creates the “new” archeological museum entrance, this part of the structure is a one floor glass box with a steel structure, propped up by a massive central wall, around which a spiral ramp descends; on the massive wall there are some display cases with important little pieces, like jars or jewels. I have chosen the subterranean solution to leave the current road system unchanged.

“Milan Ex-Cargo Areas: New Solutions”Milan (IT) Workshop

Prof. G. Cislaghi

City renovation is the main subject of this workshop, an opportunity for the entire Polytechnics university; it is based on the official urban renovation plan for the ex-cargo areas on the railway belt of Milan proposed by the municipality. The workshop gave to the students and professors the chance to define a new urban level of integration of public services in the 2015 Milan city. The 2015 Expo event will offer to Milan the opportunity to re-discover its origins and its potentialities, and at the same time to aim at a better and more international future. Our team identified as the most critical area, the rail station of Porta Genova. The reason for this choice was that Porta Genova entrance is an important way to the south of the suburban area and is located along the Naviglio Grande canal, an ancient water way that connects Milan to the other main regional rivers such as Ticino or Po. In ancient times, since the 14th century, Milan has a complex waterway system, for military and transport purposes. Actually, today only few examples of that system survive: a dock called Darsena and two canals that provide water to it, but the water supply is inadequate and the dock is like a dry pond. For this reason we tried to improve the water supply and give to the city a urban water promenade. The project consists of three main areas: the first is the closest to the actual rail station, the second area is the central square, with a multipurpose auditorium building, that also offers an entrance to the future Fashion Museum by David Chipperfield, the last area is the core of the entire project and is a water thermal building, with multipurpose integration. The mean of the water thermal building is an attempt to discover the original social potentiality of water buildings, especially thermal ones. We tried to realize a place where sports and cultural needs meet architecture, and where people are free to feel the original potential of water.
