CONCEPT STATEMENTFor this project, a carriage house has been converted into a small, relaxation guest

house that reflects the Mid-Century Modern style. As you enter the house, the front exterior shows a stone wall and large windows. The front door reflects the 1950s when the Mid-Century Modern style began. As you enter the kitchen, the large windows continue along the countertops. The appliances have sleek clean lines which accent the 50s retro refrigerator. A wall has been removed to show the open floor plan that continues throughout the space. As you enter the living room you will see the sleek lines of the style along with furniture that emphasizes the style. For example, there is a wing chair that is retro style reflecting the 50s. Along one wall in the living room is folding glass panels. This is important for the Mid-Century Modern style because it allows the concept of connecting interior and exterior living space. I decided to use the folding glass panels to make the transition from indoor and outdoor space easier. This also incorporates modern day technology that is not always used in housing, making this house unique.

Down stairs in the bedroom, a built-in day bed with a night stand is attached to the wall. An armoire allows guests to place their clothing in an organized space. There is another sliding glass door that again opens to the patio to connect the two living spaces. In the bathroom, instead of doing a linen closet I chose to keep open shelving to again reflect the style. As you head to the second floor, the staircase has open risers so the open concept is continued. Underneath the stair case is a wall of windows that follows the steps up to the second floor.

Upstairs in the office, there is a large built-in book case. Again there are large windows to allow the indoor and outdoor to connect. Throughout the house wood is used in various places such as the stairs and built-in book case. Also, graphic and geometric patterns are used to add some Mid-Century Modern flare. Overall this house should be a great place for a guest to get away and relax while enjoying the open space and connection to the outdoors.
