COLOUR 1oz SILVER

PROOF COLLECTION

SH001

A formidable fusion of purity, presentation, vibrant full-colour and strictly limited availability, the $1 Early Governors of Australia 1oz Silver Proof Collection was one of the biggest hits of 2008. Seldom seen on the market, we are delighted to be in a position to once again highlight the unique qualities of this stunning tribute to Australia’s early leaders.

A visually spectacular, exclusive presentation, with a mintage of just 1,808, the 2008 $1 Early Governors of Australia 1oz Silver Proof Collection was issued for the bicentenary of Australia’s only successful military uprising – the 1808 Rum Rebellion. A rich exploration of Australia’s colonial heritage, honouring some of the most important characters of early Australian history, the set pays homage to the first five Governors of New South Wales – Arthur Phillip, John Hunter, Philip Gidley King, William Bligh and Lachlan Macquarie. Distinguished by a commanding high relief portrait of one of these powerful characters, each Perth Mint-struck full-colour 40mm .999 silver 1oz Proof is a triumph of numismatic art. Individually eye-catching, these coins look sensational when united as a complete collection. Providing an appropriate environment for coins that take the collector on a journey through the early chapters of Australian history, the set of five is housed in a unique book-style case. Crafted from timber, with a leatherette cover, gold embossing and brass edges, the case undoubtedly enhances the collector value of this release.

Also accompanied by a detailed 8-page historical booklet, incorporating an individually serial-numbered Certificate of Authenticity, this unparalleled presentation represents a compelling chronicle of Australia’s colonial heritage – and a collector presentation of the highest calibre.

Australia’s transformation from a shambolic penal colony into a thriving, united nation is one of the most intriguing chapters of

Australian history. Unique, historic and, with just 2,500

sets issued, very exclusive, this affordable presentation honours

some of the key characters behind that transformation.

Nation Builders…From politics to exploration, from agricultural development to literature, from the discovery of gold to the performance arts, the Australian nation was built from

the contributions from a range of individuals across a wide array of fields.

Genuine icons of Australian history, and still household names today, Arthur

Phillip, William Bligh, Joseph Banks, Matthew Flinders,

Elizabeth Macarthur, Peter Lalor, Edward Hargraves, Ned Kelly, Banjo Paterson and Nellie Melba are all honoured in this collection.

Genuine Halfpennies, Genuine Gold!Enshrining this array of important Australian characters in legal tender, this new release comprises ten genuine George VI predecimal halfpennies. Finished in real gold, each George VI halfpenny bears a full-colour design of one of the aforementioned colonial luminaries upon its 25.50mm diameter flan, with each design protected by a layer of clear enamel.

A Fine Presentation…Enabling the full enjoyment of this historic presentation, each 10-coin set is housed within a black case, and is accompanied by a detailed information booklet. Outlining the story of each of the iconic colonial figures celebrated in the set, the booklet is also individually numbered, attesting to the limited edition of just 2,500.

An Exclusive Opportunity! Given the affordability of the Road to Federation Gold-plated Halfpenny Collection – available at under A$10 per full-colour coin! – the limited edition of 2,500 is surprisingly low. With this historic presentation sure to be targeted by a broad cross-section of the community, we urge our clients to place an early order.

With lower mintages and higher circulation rates than the full Sovereign, Australian Half Sovereigns are scarce and desirable in any grade. A key element of Australia’s golden heritage, we have been able to assemble a small number of sets comprising all three half sovereign types struck at the Perth Mint!

The Perth Mint, launched amid much fanfare in June of 1899, struck its very first half sovereign in 1900. With Queen Victoria passing away in January of 1901, the 1900P Half Sovereign was rendered a unique,

one-year-only issue, and is considered one of the

most important coins of the 1855-1918 Half Sovereign Series. Distinguished by the superb Veiled Head

portrait of the long-reigning monarch, and

defined by a tiny mintage of 119,000, this crucial date is included in this collection in highly collectable

Fine to Very Fine condition. Before the series concluded in 1918, the Perth Mint struck half sovereigns for both Edward VII (in 1904, 1908 and 1909) and George V (in 1911, 1915 and 1918). As with the one-year-only Queen Victoria issue, the mintages of half sovereigns struck during the reigns of her son and grandson were minuscule. On average, just 43,000 half sovereigns per year were struck for Edward VII, with the George V annual average a mere 89,400! Both the Edward VII and George V half sovereign types are included in this set – dates of our choice – with the former in Fine and the latter in Extremely Fine. Uniting beauty, history, luxury and scarcity – with so many coins from the tiny mintages lost to the melting pot – the complete 1900-18 Perth Mint Half Sovereign Typeset represents a prestigious acquisition for any collector.

One of the most important dates across the entire 1855-1931 Australian Gold Sovereign Series, we have in stock a few examples of the very first Young Head Shield Gold Sovereign struck by the Sydney Mint – the celebrated 1871S!

Bearing highly distinctive designs, intended to distinguish the coins from allegedly superior British issues, the Sydney Mint’s first sovereign series ran from 1855 until 1870. However, when authorities in London discovered that the 1855-70 Sydney Mint Sovereigns were actually preferred to their British counterparts, a directive was issued to the Mint that it was only to strike sovereigns bearing standard British designs. Given the option of using the Shield

and/or St George reverse, the Mint chose both, with the very first Shield Sovereign struck in 1871. Defined by the armorial magnificence of the reverse, and the splendid youthful portrait of Queen Victoria, the 1871S Sovereign is naturally hotly pursued for the tremendous beauty of the designs. Indeed, the Shield sovereign was and is still considered to be among the most beautiful gold coins in the history of numismatics, with its popularity across the Empire seeing a huge number shipped overseas in the 19th century – exacerbating the scarcity of the type today. Highly sought after as the ‘first of its kind’, we have this symbolic, immensely historic date available in highly collectable Fine to Very Fine quality.

Tiny mintage!Struck at the Melbourne Mint at the height of the Great Depression, the 1930M Sovereign proved to be the penultimate date of the Australian 1855-1931 Sovereign Series. Highly sought after regardless of the grade, we have this historic 22-carat gold coin in lovely, lustrous Extremely Fine condition.

As with many sovereign dates in the years leading to the end of the series, the 1930M Sovereign is notorious for the tiny mintage. Indeed, a mere 77,000 coins were struck at the Melbourne Mint in 1930, making the 1930M Australia’s second-lowest mintage sovereign issue. Featuring the St George & the Dragon reverse, and one of only three dates distinguished by the modified portrait of George V, this key date is considered scarce in Extremely Fine condition as here. Surprisingly affordable given the low mintage

and superb EF quality,

we have just a few examples available.

Superb aUnc quality! As with so many 1920s sovereign dates, the 1923M is defined by a low mintage and extremely infrequent appearances on the market – irrespective of the grade.

WWI had a severe impact on the Empire’s gold coin production – the Royal Mint didn’t begin striking sovereigns again until 1925 – but Australian mints did produce sovereigns in limited numbers in the aftermath of the war. A mere 511,000 sovereigns were struck at the Melbourne Mint in 1923, for example, and with such a large if unknown number of 1920s sovereigns melted down and used to satisfy foreign debt, it’s no shock that we rarely get the chance to offer the 1923M. A fantastic and – at just A$525 apiece – astonishingly affordable opportunity for our clients, we have seven about Uncirculated examples in stock.

The end of an era…Undermined by the global financial crisis engendered by WWI, and by the Great Depression, the Australian sovereign series came to an end in 1931. Seldom seen in premium grade, we have the very last sovereign date struck at the Melbourne Mint in Uncirculated quality!

Hotly pursued for its ‘last issue’ status, the 1931M Sovereign is also notable as having the lowest recorded mintage of the entire 1855-1931 Sovereign Series. With just 58,000 coins struck, this key date is naturally rare in the Uncirculated quality seen here. Distinguished by full mint bloom and sharp detail, our small stock will be snapped up in days.

Lowest mintage Perth sovereign! Acknowledged as scarce, especially in the upper echelons of quality, we have secured a small number of the Perth Mint’s lowest mintage sovereign – the 1928P – in Uncirculated condition!

Beyond its status as the lowest mintage issue of the Perth Mint’s 1899-1931 Sovereign Series, with just 133,000 coins struck, the 1928P is important as the very last sovereign to carry the original larger portrait of George V. A truly beautiful coin when found in the superb state of preservation seen here, we have just a few examples of this crucial, low-mintage date available in lustrous Uncirculated quality.

2011 ANDA Show Series – COMPLETE! TINY MAXIMUM MINTAGE JUST 2,000 COINS!

An exclusive opportunity for the

many Downies clients keen

to assemble the complete

collection, we are delighted

to unveil the very last issue

of the Royal Australian

Mint’s 2011 ANDA Show

Capital Bridges 1oz Silver

Unc Series!

Carrying a superbly sculpted, fully

struck-up design upon its expansive

40mm flan, this exclusive Australian

legal tender type pays homage to

Adelaide’s Diver Derrick Bridge – opened

in 2008 and named after South Australian

World War II hero Lt Tom ‘Diver’ Derrick VC,

DCM. Struck to Frosted Uncirculated quality from

a troy ounce of .999 silver, the maximum mintage of

this unique precious metal coin was set at a mere

2,000. As with every issue in the series, however, the

Royal Australian Mint decided that all coins not sold

at the Show, or during a brief period of availability on

the Mint’s website, would be melted down.

Although the final mintage has yet to be released by

the Royal Australian Mint, there seems little doubt

that the concluding chapter of the 2011 ANDA Show

Series will be as exclusive as its predecessors – and

just as hard to find in the future. Indeed, this will be

one of very few opportunities for Australian collectors

to complete the entire 5-coin series. Once gone, the

2011 $1 Diver Derrick Bridge 1oz Silver Unc – and its

forerunners – will be gone forever!

An impressive overview of Australia’s modern currency history, forming a distinctively Aussie gift for friends and contacts overseas, the Indigenous Australia Coin & Note Portfolio provides a powerful insight into the nation’s ancient past.Capturing the timeless wonder of the Dreamtime within state-of-the-art currency production, the first legal tender issue to acknowledge Australia’s indigenous culture was the nation’s first $1 banknote, unveiled at the inception of decimal currency in February 1966. Just as important in the scheme of Australian currency history, the second indigenous issue – the 1988 Bicentennial $10 – is notable as Australia’s first commemorative note, and the world’s first polymer note! The Indigenous Australia Coin &

Note Portfolio features BOTH notes, united with the Royal Australian Mint’s 1988 Bicentennial $1 and 1988-2011 Indigenous Elder $2 – PLUS the Perth Mint’s one-year-only 2005 $1 Kangaroo Al-Br BU!Presented in an attractive and secure environment, specifically designed to offer long-term protection to the flawless Uncirculated quality of the array of official Australian legal tender issues, the three coins and two banknotes are set behind archival quality bubble and housed within a brilliantly designed, informative pack.

An ideal Christmas or Lunar New Year gift, and a must-have for full-colour coin collectors, the Perth Mint’s new 2012 50c Baby Dragon 1/2oz Silver Proof is already marching down the same path to success established by virtually all of the 2012 Year of the Dragon issues released thus far.

Struck to the apex of Proof quality from 1/2oz of pure, lustrous .999

silver, and distinguished by an enchanting, caricature-style design of a baby dragon, this unique legal tender type is a typically brilliant example of the Perth Mint’s world-

renowned full-colour minting techniques. Dominating the

large 36.60mm diameter flan, the blazing red

and yellow hues of the Baby Dragon forms a dramatic contrast with the silken, Proof quality

mirrored field. Also a fine presentation, each precious metal Proof is housed within an official Perth Mint case in a beautifully illustrated ‘ready-to-wrap’ outer box, complete with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity. That Certificate of Authenticity attests to the extremely limited availability of this captivating collector coin. Unwilling to take advantage of the barnstorming demand seen for all Year of the Dragon issues, the Perth Mint has restricted the worldwide mintage to a surprisingly low 7,500 coins, and our allocation from this meagre figure has already been severely depleted. An immensely affordable opportunity to secure a Perth Mint-struck Year of the Dragon keepsake, get your order in early and ensure supply of the 2012 50c Baby Dragon 1/2oz Silver Proof at the value-for-money Official Issue Price of just A$67.50.

Of the plethora of highly sought after Year of the Dragon issues from the Perth Mint, the 2012 $100 Year of the Dragon 1oz Gold

BU has arguably generated the greatest demand. Indeed, our allocation sold out before we even had the chance to offer it, and the complete 30,000-coin mintage has already sold out at the Mint! Having scoured the international market, however, we are delighted to announce that this spectacular 1oz .9999 gold coin is now back in stock at Downies!

Although the fervent interest in this coin is partly due to the general popularity of the Year of the Dragon in the Chinese

Lunar Calendar, the virtually instantaneous devastation of the

mintage illustrates the tremendous demand for the Perth Mint’s Lunar

Gold BU Series in recent years – particularly the 1oz Gold BU.

A powerful illustration as to exactly why the Mint is known as Australia’s ‘precious metal specialists’, this prestigious annual issue has naturally caught the eye of Lunar buyers and traditional Australian legal tender coin collectors. Perhaps more importantly, the 1oz Gold BU has also become a key target for precious metal investors, with more

and more people seeking a cost-effective, Government-backed way to secure .9999 gold. Indicative of the astonishing recent success of the Lunar Gold BU Series, the 30,000-coin mintages of the 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 $100 Lunar 1oz Gold BU issues have all sold out! With the 30,000-coin mintage of the 39.34mm 2012 $100 Year of the Dragon 1oz Gold BU sold out even faster than its predecessors, you must not ignore this opportunity. It may be the last opportunity you get.

SURE TO VANISH…from the market!

Superstars sparkle in silver…

The leading sex symbol of her generation, what better way

could there be to celebrate the 85th anniversary of Marilyn Monroe’s birth than with a full-colour legal tender coin? If you looking for that perfect memento to keep Marilyn’s

flame burning, then this is the one for you!

As unique as the Sex Goddess herself, this one-year-only type is struck from cupro-nickel, finished in genuine silver and then superbly enhanced with a full-

colour ‘movie shot’ of Marilyn – united with two other images of this siren of the silver screen. A spectacular monument to the star of ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’ and ‘Some Like It Hot’, this exclusive, affordable tribute presents Marilyn as she is remembered by her legion of adoring fans – as the epitome of Hollywood glamour.Officially authorised Marilyn Monroe memorabilia, and sure to be hotly pursued in the 85th anniversary of the year she was brought into the world as Norma Jean Baker, this vivacious 38.61mm full-colour coin is part of a tiny mintage of just 2,500.

Marilyn Monroe American Idol…

Underpinned by the striking reverse design, the strictly limited availability and the sensational value-for-money, the 2012 $1 Harry Houdini Trick Box Cu-Ni BU is most notable for the inventive, imaginative presentation.

One of the world’s greatest escapologists and magicians, Harry Houdini (1874-1926) was among the USA’s most famous entertainers at the time of his death – exactly 85 years ago. Issued to honour the all-too-short life and daring deeds of this legendary character, this unique, exclusive legal tender type is distinguished by a fine portrayal of Houdini upon its 22mm diameter flan.

An entirely fitting form of presentation, this affordable cupro-nickel coin is set within a black frame and presented in a special ‘magic’ case. Place the coin and the frame within the outer box – say the magic words of your choice – pull the frame out and, hey presto! The coin has ‘disappeared’! With Downies able to secure only a tiny number of coins from the mintage of just 5,000, order now – before this coin really disappears!

Comprising six 38.61mm 25g sterling silver coins, the 2010-11 $5 Legends of Hollywood Silver Proof Collection celebrates genuine icons of the silver screen.

Featuring an original photograph by noted Hollywood photographer, Bruno Bernard (1912-87), the three 2010-dated coins honour Clark Gable (1901-60), John Wayne

(1907-79) and Ginger Rogers (1911-95), with the 2011-dated trio paying homage to Elizabeth Taylor (1932-2010), Sophia Loren (1934) and Marilyn Monroe (1926-62). Exclusive, with just 2,500 issued, each legal tender set is housed in a movie-reel case with numbered Certificates of Authenticity.

Canada’s FIRST Lunar Kilo Coin!

TINY AUSTRALIAN ALLOCATION!

A massive leap forward

for one of the world’s

most innovative, most

respected issuing

authorities, the Royal

Canadian Mint has

launched Canada’s very

first Lunar New Year Kilo

Silver Proof – and it’s now

in stock at Downies!

Among the world’s largest legal tender

issues, this precious metal mammoth

measures a huge 101.60mm in

diameter and is struck from a

whopping KILO of pure, prestigious

.9999 silver – the highest silver purity

in international numismatics! Whilst

the size and weight will naturally spark

the interest of collectors worldwide,

the 2012 $250 Year of the Dragon

Kilo Silver Proof is notable for much

more than the imposing dimensions.

Featuring a superbly sculpted Year

of the Dragon design – perfectly

accommodated by the expansive

flan and underpinned by the most

exquisite Proof strike – this colossal

coin is an enthralling work of

numismatic art.

An innovative, official legal tender

release, and a collector presentation

of undeniable prestige, this

gargantuan tribute to the Year of the

Dragon is also extremely exclusive

– particularly given the astonishing

demand for all 2012 Year of the

Dragon issues. In nearly 80 years in

the industry, we have not seen the

equal of the passionate demand for

the 2012 Year of the Dragon issues.

Given the quality, the originality and,

indeed, sheer size of the 2012 $250

Year of the Dragon Kilo Silver Proof,

we anticipate similarly strong interest

in this groundbreaking giant – as does

the Royal Canadian Mint.

Although our status as official

distributor assured us a piece of the

action, the Mint has restricted our

allocation of the 2012 $250 Year of

the Dragon Kilo Silver Proof to just a

few coins. Whether you pay right now

or take advantage of our convenient

layby terms, we cannot emphasise

strongly enough the need for an early

order.

 Struck to faultless Proof quality

from a whopping KILO of .9999

silver!

 Exclusive! ‘Lucky’ worldwide

mintage restricted to a mere 5,888

coins!

 An absolutely massive legal

tender coin – measures 101.60mm

in diameter!

Housed within an offi cial Royal

Canadian Mint presentation case

 Accompanied by an individually

numbered Certifi cate of Authenticity
