Razor-wire around Serbia risks

destabilising the region, making

"Fortress Europe" a visible reality

Page 20: Migration and Climate Change

Why fence me in? (EurActiv)• “Hungary will build an anti-migrant fence on its

border with Serbia … 175km long”, Peter Szijjarto, Hungary's foreign minister (17 June).

Why?• “Other countries have opted for the same

solution”, referring to Greek, Bulgarian fences• … all EU states and EU candidate countries are

“safe countries” to deport asylum seekers who cross Bulgaria, Greece, or Serbia.

• On 25-26 June, European leaders will meet in Brussels to craft a new common migration policy.

• We need your help to mount the pressure before this decisive summit. Join the worldwide virtual protest #Occupy4Migrants to ask these leaders to ensure the protection of those who attempt to reach the European shores.

Together, we demand:1/ The creation of a real Mediterranean rescue operation2/ A show of solidarity in the reception of migrant persons on European territory.3/ The opening of legal and safe channels that allow migrant persons to gain access to European territory without having to risk their lives.

Conclusions • Migration is not new - it is very complex • Climate (environmental) change has always

played a big part in migration• Climate change impacts are far reaching …

not just loss of land - also agriculture, health, cities, water, energy etc. etc.

• Climate change is a major destabilising force – for democracy, human rights and rule of law

• The Council of Europe needs to be involved
