CYCLE CITY 301 pedal'pushers ride in es^miie Freedom Tour

EDGMONT — I I may have been hard to spot among the Joggers, walkers and mlsceltyeous sun worshipers, but the Igrgesl Ucyelo tour In the htsiory of the county went off here yesterday without a hitch.

Ridley Crpek State Park, namely picnic area number 15, the alte M the'Ninth Annual Freedom Bike Tour. The

''Delaware Valley Bicycle Club, one of several biking groups headfluartered In f>elaware County, sponsored the tour aiul met with Its most dramatic success ever.

The recipe for this event was perfect from the start. Stir lb OIW part preparation, two parts beautiful weatiier and about 50 part i pre-event publicity, and all the ingredients were there for a smashing day on wheels. '> ; In prior years, the Freedom Tour would be fortunate to

F gttroct two or three dozen hardy bikers. The top attendance figure recorded was 47. . \ , Then came yesterday.

"We were really, shooting for oumberi this year," said

1

' ' .... ae... ' ,•„. LOCAL-FRONT Joe Lunardi

DVBC president Rich Patterson. "We wanted to get a major r event going to qUvkI more people to the club."

A major event it was. A record 301 riders turned out, breaking all previous marks by well over 600 percent.

This was no neighborhood 10-K, either. Most of the bikers grunted through the rugged, hilly, dS-mile advanced course. The rest settled for a nruMlerate — and the term Is relative — 3S miles, k To fully appreciate that kind of distance, imagine taking a Spur-of-tbe-mornent trip to the casinos. On a lO-speed bike, no less. Most of OS probably wouldn't have enough energy left to donblCKlowD. ' < 4 " I t ' s hard for someone who rides less than five miles a

, week," said Patterson "Even to do the 35-niile route, people " " " V iwfTi dav There are quite a few hills in

are treacherous enough to challenge a Volvo, let alone those whose only cushion for the road is a hard, narrow seat.

Yet cyclists from Delaware County and beyond responded to the challenge. Eight riders from New York, 11 from New Jersey, seven from Delaware and three from Maryland were among the magic 301. And nearly everyone finished.

" I t went really smoothly," Patterson said. "One of our volunteers drove the route in a sag-wagon to help anybody who had a breakdown. ^

"We had to drive one person to the finish line who had a knee problem, Someone else took a turn too tight and picked up some road rash." For the uninformed, that means falling down and skinning the knees and elbows.

Ironically, it takes a lot more than knees and elbows to succeed at long-distance biking. Different muscles are exercised compared to those of joggers, only with less strain

, to particularly stressful spots like the ankles and feet. "The lesser impact on the knees and feet," noted Patterson,

' "cuts down on the risk of injury. You can get hurt racing, but this is Just a tour."

Patterson also mentioned correctly that swimming Is probably the least risky form of distance exercise. Small wonder that the three sports — running, cycling and swimming

~— make up the Increasingly popular trlathlons and that many athletes often turn to biking or the pool when their legs can't take the pounding of the asphalt any longer.

That's what was so good about yesterday's turnout and the pre-event publicity which produced it. As Patterson says, "With greater membership, we can offer more chances for people to r ide."

More opportunities to ride safely — in the country instead of on local streets — mean^better exercise anid less hazardous conditions for al l .

And yesterday's success was a long time coming for Delco bikers.

"That was our biggest problem," Patterson Joked. "A lot of people were late because th^y forgot to set their clocks ahead." ^-^'

J>ut remember U the easy way: Spring ahead into biking.

For more Information on future DVBC events, a free copy of the club newsletter may be obtained by writing to Box 497. Media, 19063. A five county, seven club rally and picnic wilt be held at Washington Crossing State P^rk on August 26.

One of the reasons for yesterday's smooth operation was the work of nearly 20 DVBC volunteers. Among them were'Rich Bernhardt (food), Doug Kennedy (sag-wagon), Don Ashbrook (course marker), Ira Joseph (sweep rider) and Dave Fleming and Ed Sigda (registration). . ; .• . ^
