For many of us, summertime is the seasonof vacations and travel. Unfortunately, thesignificant cost of travel also makes it atempting arena for fraudsters. This is a goodtime to focus on travel-related schemes andscams designed to separate us from ourhard-earned money.

Membership travel clubs continue to be asource of complaints -- and consumer loss.Typically consumers are invited to sales pre-sentations through mailings or telephonecalls, offering free airline tickets, hotel staysor other benefits. The presentations invari-ably are high-pressure attempts to persuadeconsumers that the discounts they will receiveas a member of the club will justify the exor-bitant price of joining, which often is thou-sands of dollars.

In reality, many consumers discover toolate that the promised discounts are no betterthan what they could obtain on their own orthrough a traditional travel agent. My officerecently took one such travel club operation

to trial in Appleton, after which the courtordered those responsible to pay back the

$3.8 million paid by Wisconsin consumersas well as more than one million dollars inforfeitures and costs.

Another area of ongoing problems istimeshare reselling. The difficulty of sellingsome timeshares can lead people to fall preyto fraudulent timeshare resellers. Thesescammers often pretend to have a buyeravailable, and demand up-front fees to sellyour timeshare, which could be hundreds orthousands of dollars. In some cases, themoney disappears, and so does the reseller.

My office will continue to pursue fraudu-lent travel-related schemes, but the best strat-egy is to avoid falling prey to the scammers.Be skeptical of offers of free trips or otherprizes, which can turn out to be nonexistentor riddled with so many restrictions and hid-den costs as to be useless, or of guaranteesthat your timeshare will be sold. Also, neversign a costly contract without first checkingout the company, either through the govern-ment, or entities such as the Better BusinessBureau, or other sources online. In addition,check whether timeshare resellers hold a real

estate license authorizing them to engage inthe business.

A juried fine art and fine craft festivalwith a plein-air art competition will take over

the grounds at The Domes, Friday, Aug. 15through Sunday, Aug. 17. The Mitchell ParkDomes, Milwaukees Living Landmark, islocated at 524 S. Layton Blvd.

Works exhibited and for sale are sculp-ture and paintings in a variety of media,ceramics, photography, fiber arts, and jew-elry. Names of the 50 selected artists, theirmedia, and images of the works submitted tothe jury are available on the Friends of theDomes event website at milwaukeedome-sartfestival.com.

Artists participating in the Plein Air Paint-Out will be working on the festival grounds.All plein-air paintings will be for sale at thefestival or through the auction.

The caliber of the work in the show isreflected in the large cash prizes. For theexhibiting artists, the best-of-show award is$3,500. For the plein-air completion, theaward is $1,500. The total of prizes to beawarded is $10,500.

Friday, August 22, Kitts Frozen Custardmarks 64 years of deliciousness by handingout free custard cones. Its a fitting celebrationfor the Milwaukee landmark, launched by theKittredge family at 70th and Capitol in 1950.

Ray Butch Rydz, whos run Kitts for 37years and bought the business from theKittredges in 2000, says the anniversary cele-bration on August 17th will also include aclassic car show with trophies and cash prizes.

Drive through, walk up, eat inKitts offers a walk-up window, call-aheadservice and a diner-themed eating area. Wehave a lot of memorabilia from the 50s here,Rydz says. Its a fun atmosphere.

Hes quick to note that we have a lot morethan custard. Two dozen-plus sandwichchoices include the Kitts Original BBQ sand-wich, served since 1950. Or try a corn dog orcatfish sandwich, burgers or brats, hot beef orBLT.

Not in the mood for bread? Pick up a pound of rib tips, a fried chicken dinner, a shrimp ortaco salad. Just about every side order youcould want is here, too, from chili cheese friesto pizza puffs to inferno chicken drum-sticks.

The menu also includes local specialties likeSprechers root beer, at no extra charge. Itmakes a great root beer float, Rydz says.

Five flavors every dayOf course, the headline attraction at Kitts isthe frozen custarddense, satiny and rich.Chocolate, vanilla, and butter pecan are avail-able every day. Butter pecan is the mostexpensive flavor to make, but its what thecustomers want, Rydz says.

Along with the three standard flavors, Kittsoffers two daily special flavorsa candy fla-vor, and a berry flavor, Rydz says. Employeesvote on the daily specials.

They usually get their wayI dont win,Rydz says. But customers always win, enjoy-ing flavors like Chocolate Caramel Truffle orStrawberry Cheesecake.

Biggest challenge: WeatherKitts is open 365 days a year, 10:30 a.m. to

midnight. Rydz says business booms on hot,sunny days but slows when the clouds roll in.People need to remember were still openwhen its cool and rainy, he says. Theweather is the biggest challenge to our busi-ness.

Road construction has been another majorchallenge. During the seven-month initialphase of the Capitol Drive reconstructionproject, completed in November 2012, Rydzsays business dropped 30 percent. Last yearssecond phase affected business to a lesserextent.

The last four years have made it clear that itpays to have a strong financial partner, Rydzsays. And hes sold on Securant Bank andTrust.

They didnt turn their back on me, Rydzsays. If it wasnt for Securant, my doorswould be locked.

Rydz adds that Securants help enabled him tomaintain his payroll, which includes severalemployees whove been with Kitts for morethan a decade. Were a family here, he says.When business is slow, I try to make sureeveryone gets at least a little something.

Like always being a kidToday Rydz enjoys mingling with customers,

discussing the flavor of the day, sharing a joke, or talking about whatever else is on peo-ples minds. Its my favorite part of the busi-ness, he saysthat, and the fun of workingin a diner full of memorabilia, serving deli-cious frozen custard. Says Rydz, Its likealways being a kid.
