Executive Officer Barbara Amb-jerg Pedersen said the gallery show-cases several styles including ArnhemLand rarrk style, naif (naive) stylefrom the River region and dot art from

Tanami desert. “Dot art is very popular with peo-

ple and we feature pieces fromrenowned artists Lorna Fencer, PeggyRockman, Marilyn Nakamarra andLilly Hargrave, amongst others” MsAmbjerg Pedersen said.

Mimi Aboriginal Arts and Craftshave paintings which can be pur-chased from corporate sizes two me-tres by two meters to beautiful tiny10cm by 10cm pieces.

Ms Ambjerg Pedersen said the naifstyles are also a great drawcard for

tourists. “The naif style has lots of figura-

tive work and vibrant colour and thepaintings are inspired by the stories ofthe region,” she said.

Chairperson of Mimi Arts BillHarney has sold his pieces all over theworld.

Ms Ambjerg Pedersen said hispaintings and carvings are acceptedby the National Aboriginal and Tor-rens Strait Island Art Awards almostevery year.

Mimi Arts and Crafts have won-

derful fabrics from the Merrepen, In-jalak and Maningrida art centres.

They also showcase work fromsouth east Arnhem land, Weemol,Ngukurr Arts, Lajamanu, Jilkming-gan, Mataranka, Beswick, Kalkaringi,Minyerri, Mennggen amongst others.

Artist profile: John Dewar

Artist John Dewar has becomean essential part of Mimi Abo-riginal Arts and Crafts.From the Mayali tribe, MrDewar comes from the tradi-tional region of Oenpelli, north-west of Katherine. Born in the area now known as“The Rocks” on the easternside of Katherine in the dryseason of 1956, Mr Dewar haslived in the Katherine region hisentire life.His father worked in manyplaces, spending a lot of time inthe Maranboy region working

for the tin mine and the timbermill and also as a stockman,yard builder and fencer on thestations in the area. The family settled down on EvaValley Station, now known asManyallaluk, and ‘Lo spent a lotof his youth there learning fromand working for his father. Following in his father’s foot-steps, Mr Dewar works hardand enjoys his cross culturaljob. He says: “I don’t like to sitaround. I like to work and paintand to keep busy”. Mr Dewar’s paintings and arte-facts are held in collections

around Australia and interna-tionally.The famous artist attributesmost of his paintings skills torole models in his family, in-cluding his dad, uncle andbrother.Mr Dewar said his family taughthim how to harvest stingy bark,make his own natural pigmentsand use a reed brush. These techniques are held inhigh demand and often re-quested by international visi-tors who come to Katherine. The 57-year-old said he lovesworking on blank canvas andbark paintings.
