In one study, seventh-grade students were given a survey to measure their mindset. Then researchers followed the students over two years to monitor their mathematics achievement… [S]tudents with a fixed mindset stayed constant, but the achievement of those with a growth mindset went onward and upward (Blackwell et al., 2007)

Brain scans of students with growth mindsets show vastly increased activity because they recognize errors and seek to correct them; whereas people with fixed mindsets either don’t recognize mistakes (thinking their “talent” ensures that they are always right) or don’t seek to correct the errors once recognized (because they’re “just not good at that”). (Mangels, Butterfield, Lamb, Good, & Dweck, 2006)

Achievement

Effort Counts Twice!

Phelps Workout Regimen:▪ Physically trains 6 hours a day, 6 days per week

▪ Works out his entire body

▪ Swims minimum of 80,000 meters per week

▪ 80,000 meters = 50 miles

▪ Requires 12,000 calories PER DAY to support activity

Rowdy Gaines… once tabulated how much practice it took to develop the stamina, technique, confidence, and judgment to win an Olympic gold medal. In the eight-year period leading up to the 1984 games, he swam, in increments of fifty-yard laps, at least twenty thousand miles…

“I swam around the world for a race that lasted forty-nine seconds.”          Angela Duckworth, Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance

Dr. Angela Duckworth’sEquation of

Achievement

Effort Counts Twice– IT’S ALSO TRUE WHEN IT COMES TO THE BRAIN!!!

Brain Plasticity:Dr. Alvaro

Pascaul-Leone and

Pat Fletcher

▪ In her 20’s, Pat Fletcher lost all eyesight in a chemical explosion

▪ One eye removed

▪ Other eye permanently shut

▪ Lived the next 25 years as a “typical” blind person

▪ On the Internet, she stumbled across the open-sourced “vOICe System,” which was invented by Dr. Pascaul-Leone

▪ Dr. Pascaul-Leone open-sourced vOICe because the concept was so unbelievable, he couldn’t sell it to anyone

▪ Uses camera to convert visual images into multi-tonal sounds

▪ Pat Fletcher tried it out and didn’t think it worked particularly well, but she figured that since she had nothing better to do, she’d upgrade it

▪ She affixed a mini-cam to goggles, threw a laptop and batteries into a backpack, routed the sound to her ears via headphones, and she started walking around with the contraption attached to her body.

vOICe

▪ Using vOICe, Pat Fletcher can now walk around like a “typical” sighted person, and she can see

▪ Shapes of objects

▪ Depth in all planes

▪ Objects in far distance such as clouds and mountains

▪ Can separately hear conversations while seeing with her vOICe sound inputs

▪ Brain scans show that the vOICe inputs are in fact being interpreted in Pat Fletcher’s visual centers in exactly the same place and manner where her vision was created prior to being blinded.

▪ In other words, far as her brain is concerned, Pat Fletcher is literally seeing again.

If a blind person can train her brain to see, there’s no

reason a kid’s brain can’t be trained to

learn Algebra.

Stretch Goal, aka…

BHAG: “Big Hairy Audacious Goal”

Stretch Goal/ BHAG

▪A goal that is created without any consideration of a plan to achieve it▪State your dream

▪Your dream becomes your goal

▪Now, look at the calendar:▪Give yourself 2 years▪2 years is your timeframe

Stretch/SMART Goals

Stretch/BHAG Goal: I will finish with a time of <60 seconds (theoretical Top 5) at the WCS Championships in 2017

  1. Specific:  I will score at a speed of 65-69.99 seconds or faster at the WCSC in 2016 [ACHIEVED] and 55-60 or faster at the WCSC in 2017 2. Measurable:  I will maintain a practice journal, plus records of competition times at WCS monthly club matches 3. Achievable:  It is achievable if

a. I maintain a 15-30 minute home practice routine, 4-5 times per week i. Concentrating on speed ii. Concentrating on reaction time from beep iii.Concentrating on transition speed

b. I maintain a competition/practice regimen of 2-4 live practices or matches per month at the event venue c. At competitions, I consistently squad with Master and Grand Master level competitors who are better than me, and they

i. Provide me with solid performance examples that I can analyze ii. Provide me with critiques, direct advice, and practice regimens to improve my own performance

4. Realistic:  This is realistic because I have seen others compete with times in the 50’s, and my goals are incremental enough to be achievable within the expected time frame

5. Time Based:  a. By June 4, 2016, I will score in the 60’s at the WCS monthly match [ACHIEVED] b. By December, 2016, I will score in the SC monthly match:

i. 50’s on the SC short course [ACHIEVED] ii. 80’s on the SC long course [ACHIEVED]

c. By February, 2017, I will consistently be shooting in the low 60’s at the WCS monthly match d. By June, 2017, I will shoot the WCS in the 50’s

Unfortunately, my race series shut down in late 2016 before my BHAG of placing 5th could be

completed in June, 2017.

HOWEVER… at the last WCSC in 2016 I finished 7th out of 80 competitors from as far

away as Australia.
