Thanet Extra Superdad of the YearDave Stanley of Manston was selected as the KM

Groups Thanet Extra Superdad of the Year recently, unfortunately however he didn’t quite make the finalleap to becoming the Kent Superdad, that honour goinginstead to Anthony Peak representing the KentishGazette area. Nevertheless we should feel good thatDave was selected for this area, he has two great kidsBen 4 and Jack 6 and a loving wife, Vicki. Jack attendsMinster CofE school and it was at the school gates werecently got to speak to Dave.

He tells us that unbeknown to him, Vicki put himforward for the award and he felt very humble at havingbeen selected as the Thanet area winner. He tells us hewas formerly a Staff Nurse on A&E and has spent16yrs in some form of nursing, but as a result of whatshould have been just a routine operation he has nowbeen diagnosed with Fybromyalgia and ME both ofwhich cause him extreme pain, but for the boys sake heworks himself through the pain barrier every day to gowith them to school and to nursery. He says, tongue incheek, that Vicki wouldn’t allow him to lay in anyway,

and they’ve recently taken on the commitment of a tenyear old border collie named Kiri who just loves havinga ball thrown for her, even though she suffers with agamy leg, the trouble though is she doesn’t bring itback. Dave did make mention of not being able to teachan old dog new tricks, but he’s working on it anyway.

Dave would have loved to have won the title, notleast because the prize would have seen him being ablefulfil his two greatest ambitions, riding a hot air balloonand having a bash at being a radio presenter.

Maybe we should be speaking to KMFM Thanet totry to get him the chance to fulfil at least one of thosedreams, unfortunately the hot air balloon may be a bitbeyond our capabilities though (unless you knowsomeone who may be able to help ?? We’re open tosuggestions)

What an inspiration Dave is to those of us sufferingpain at whatever level, he is an extremely nice guy witha loving family he can rightfully be very proud of.

WELL DONE DAVE !!

Sunday 21st June, Fathers Day, what was I doing ? I’ll tell you, Iwas sitting at my front door welcoming visitors to our garden whilsttyping this and the other articles or adverts that required my input. The day started off with me being well wrapped up to stop the chill, but as the day got older so the sun got warmer and I removed a fewlayers to compensate. My Monthly Moan: Every day I receive complaints about dogsfouling in the Rec, some even do it whilst out on the lead with theirowners, it’s just a pity the owners don’t look behind them once inawhile. Even worse though are those who live adjacent to the Recthat allow their dog to roam, under no-ones supervision, so nice ofthem to think of others !! To those thoughtless owners - be awarethat the dog warden has been informed. Rant over. This issue sees us giving a trial to another Printer, for the magazine. They have given us an extremely competitive quote which could bea lifesaver for us at this moment in time, as with the recessionhitting our advertisers so hard (we’ve lost 4 or 5 this month alone)income is obviously down. So we are hoping the quality has notdiminished, especially as we have also agreed to use them againnext month, when we produce the centre section in colour. We areactually hoping we can then offer them our continued business. If you have an event, a birth, a marriage, a death, maybe a thank youor something else we haven’t listed, that you’d like us to publish,we accept all of these types of things free of charge, justensure you get them to us by the 3rd Friday of the month at the verylatest. Our only copy charges being for commercial advertising. However we are not adverse to accepting donations if you so wish, but it isn’t something we would automatically expect. A specialthank you to those who have done so, “every little helps” as thesaying goes. The more observant amongst you will have probably noticed amember of the ‘E’ Team is missing, and that is because Heather hasdecided her health will not allow her to continue in such an activerole, so she has stood down much to the teams dismay. All

of us here at MM wish her well and hope that if she feels able, she will, shouldwe need her, still do the odd bit of typing for us.Finally ‘a bit tongue in cheek’ does anyone have any empty office space theywould allow us to use, to both work from and to house our equipment. We wouldlike to extend our monthly offerings but just do not have the space under ourstairs to allow us to do so. We’ve tried KCC Libraries, without much luck, especially as Minster library have an empty office that for years has only beenused as a junk room, so as a last ditch attempt does anyone know of anywhereelse we might try ? That’s it for another month. P.S. Where’s Zac today?(For those who still don’t know - Zac is my very vocal Jack Russell X and hispicture appears every month somewhere in the magazine - if I remember it !!)

Steve Taylor, Community Warden

It’s good to have some fine weather with us, and I’m pleased to reportthat Minster is at present without too many issues.

I would like to draw your attention to an incident that happenedrecently and I thought would make interesting and useful reading.

I was contacted by a relative of one our elderly residents stating that shewas unable to make contact with her. I discovered that a close neighbour ofthe lady concerned was a key-holder so I called on them and they informedme that she had been taken to hospital and gave me details of where shewas. I then passed this on to the concerned relative who as you can imaginewas very pleased to discover that her relative was safe and in good care.

It turned out that I had been found by this person via theMinster-in-Thanet website . Which made me think it would be useful forany of you that might have or know of someone else that might haverelatives out of the area and could make use of this website to obtain contactdetails of myself or the local police in cases such as this. Anyway I hopeyou found this useful.

On to other things. I had been made aware of a large amount ofhousehold goods that had been dumped near the sewage pumping stationon marsh farmland. On arrival there was a three piece suite of furniturealong with other sundry items. In amongst this was some literature whichgave names and addresses. I contacted Thanet District Council to report thefind and to arrange for it’s removal. I have been informed by anenforcement officer from TDC that they are to prosecute the offender andthat court proceedings will take place. This is just what we want to hear. The message is we will not accept any fly-tipping no matter how big orsmall and when I have more details of the outcome I will up-date you allbut in the meantime if you spot anything that you think might look like it’sbeen dumped let me know and together we can make sure that thesecharacters will realise that Minster is not a place to come for this type ofactivity .

Just one final note, as I’ve mentioned previously this is the time of yearwhen unwanted door callers appear. It seems that they are even calling on weekends looking for anything from odd-jobs to complete houserenovations. I was told on Monday this week that a resident had been calledon over the weekend but didn’t call until two days after. Our local policeofficers will usually be on duty most weekends and I would ask you to atleast try their number as they will be more than happy to deal with this typeof call. If they’re not on duty please call Margate police on 01843 231055and inform them.

Thanks for your continued support to me and our local police, as I say, together we will make sure Minster remains a safe place to live and work.

School GardenI would like to start by saying a big thanks to Gwen and her husband who

have helped us so much and especially for letting us fill up the watering cans.Next for the people who have donated money, this will go towards somestorage for the children’s tools. Lastly, for all the people who walk

past and praise us for the hard work we haveput in so far.

Now I will give you an update. We havesix beds not seven, we felt there was notenough room for seven, and these are nowfull with vegetables. We have picked ourfirst lettuce and these were given to MissKobylecki and Mrs Murray (waiting forfeedback on them!) We have some fish inthe pond which were donated and are living

happily with the newts and damselflies. We have managed to remove therubbish and this has made room for us to create a Herb section. And whilstworking on a sunny Sunday we have spotted baby Wrens with their parents,a Song Thrush, Chaffinch and of course our Robins and Blackbirds. But allis not right! Our strawberries are disappearing and our nut feeder has beenvandalised! We suspect this may be the Blackbirds and a Squirrel!!!If anyone can make or donate a squirrel feeder,we would appreciate it. If you have not seenthe garden yet please come down and have alook, we are there most Sunday afternoons -we love to stop! and have a chat.SusanDaw

(Editor’s note: Mrs Murray can confirm that the lettuce was indeed asgood, if not better, than shop bought! Maybe there’s a gap in the market forSchool Grown Produce??)

Tesco Vouchers for Schools

Do you have any of these that you do not need ?

Then please drop them into Attwells where they are collecting them onbehalf of Minster School. They are also collecting any other Supermarketschools vouchers so this isn’t limited to Tesco’s alone.

Minster- in- Thanet WI.June's speaker was the popular Lee Ault, and attentive silence reigned as

she described the lives and terrible working conditions of 19th centuryseamstresses. Lee had brought many examples of the fine work done by these

women, who worked for paltry wages.Attentive silence, however, was not the order of the evening at the Beetle Drive,

when decibel levels were high, and only dropped when play stopped for us to enjoya ploughman's supper organised by Dorothy Butterworth: an evening greatly enjoyedby all who took part.

Another event enjoyed by all who took part was the Garden Morning, held inDon and Ann Wilks' beautiful garden, with plants, bric-a-brac, books, jewellery, andcakes for sale, refreshments to enjoy whilst soaking up the sun, plus a raffle with plentyof prizes, The event was open to all, and it was nice to see many non-members 'dropin'. "Thank you" to all who supported us.

Nine members tookpart in 'The Big Tidy Up',

organised by VirginiaLinihan, the aim being tocollect litter in the vicinityof the school. The ladiesstarted in Taylor Road, and

worked their way roundThorne, St. Mary's,

Domneva and MolineuxRoads, and the surroundingalley-ways. They did not

collect as much litter as they thought they would - it was mainly cigarette butts!!However, whilst Ann Tweedale was working near the infants' school, her young'audience' asked what she was doing, so she replied, "collecting litter that naughtypeople have all dropped", to which the childrensaid, "I put my litter in the bin!" It is reassuringto know that some of the younger generation arebeing taught to keep our environment litter-free.Well done them.

The ladies had been issued with protectivegloves and pick-up sticks, and looked very smartin their bright green plastic tabards, which matchedthe bright green plastic rubbish bags.

Our next meeting, to which visitors and new members will be made welcome, will be on Tuesday, 14 July at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall, when Chas Wingrovewill enlighten us on 'Self Defence for All'.

Marathon UpdateHi, Better late than never - just to say that I managed to complete

the marathon in 4hrs, 20mins and 30secs, beating last year's time by 11minutes. I have raised approx £700 for Breast Cancer Campaign.

I picked up an injury the week before the race, which painfullyflared-up again at mile 19, but I managed to dig in and keep going, sowas just pleased to finish. At that point I said to myself 'I thinkI'll call it a day now', but the following week sent off my applicationfor next year's event! No fool like an old fool. But would recommend it to anyone who'sthought about entering - it's a great carnival, terrifically organised.

My wife Lesley and daughter Kimberleyaccompanied me as usual - and despiteclubbing with friends at the O2 Arena until3.00am the night before, Kimberley stillmanaged to wave me off in the morning!Opposite is my official photo taken after thefinish.

Many thanks, Peter Gallagher

Home CompostingHave you considered home composting ?

For just a short while longer you are able to purchase a compost binat a reduced rate from Thanet Council.

To obtain a bin you need to ring 0845 076 0223 and quote RefHCA9 but note this offer is only open until the end of August this year,as the Government will be withdrawing funding after that. This willmean a £3 million withdrawal of support for the scheme. Since thescheme started residents in Kent have purchased over 100,000 compostbins.

Defra are looking into the possibility of applying for funding to seeif the BTCV can carry on, however it is doubtful that these funds willallow for subsidising the future purchase of any new bins.

There are three available on the scheme; 220ltr Compost Converterfor £22.00 + £5 delivery (rrp £39.00); 330ltr Compost Converter for£23.00 + £5 delivery (rrp £49.00) or a 320ltr KOMP for £55.00 + £5.00delivery (rrp £81.00). So get in quick whilst you still can - comeSeptember it will be too late !!!

T R O T(Toll Rides (Off-Road) TrustDear EditorI am sending you this letter to ask if youcould publicise my efforts to open a safer and extended riding network in this area. The area I am concentrating on is Monkton, Minster and St. Nicholas-at-Wade.The aim is to open up some Toll Rides to link with the existing byways, so riderscan avoid busy or dangerous roads and, if needed, provide additionalcircular routes without using bridle paths. If this is to happen I need help fromriders in the area.1. Firstly I need to establish that there is a need for additional off-road riding, especially if an application can be made for grant aid to cover the costs of thingssuch as rider friendly gates, bridges etc.2. Secondly I need one or two people to help me look at maps, identify possibleroutes and the names of Farmers / Landowners over whose land the routemay cross. After that we will begin to approach the Farmers / Landowners.I can be contacted on 01843 822368 or 07703 271431 or by post at Golden PointFarm, 115 Monkton Street, Monkton.Kay Gregory - For Toll Rides (Off-Road) Trust.

Minster Bowls ClubIt was my fault for missing last month’s newsletter. I

missed the deadline by two days forgetting it’s the 3rdFriday in the month.

We couldn’t have asked Mother Nature to be kinder for the startof the outdoor season. We haven’t had to use our “Wet Gear” on mostof the matches.

The ladies are off to a good start winning two out of three games,195 shots to 136. In the league they won the first two games 69-56.

The men have won 8 games and lost 5. The Combination team inthe league are playing their hearts out having lost only one game sofar. The Premier team are also doing quite well considering thestronger opposition.

Another success is the regular request for an application form tojoin the club from our villagers. Some of the recently approvedmembers are gaining valuable experience playing in our friendlygames and many have also entered the club competitions.

To make it easier for you Non Bowlers to see when we areplaying, on our home green, Messr’s Attwells are kindly displayingeach months games in their window.

Next month I will be able to tell you the results of the CharityOpen Day sponsored by W.S. Cole & Son, also the results of theHSBC sponsored Triples Day for Club Members.

By special request and to put a name to who writes these reports, for your benefit, I am the Club Captain.

HOUSEThere has been a house at Quex since the early 1400s, home

to several different families over the centuries. It has been called“Quex” since its ownership in the 1500s by the Quekes family, who prospered from the extensive wool industry in Kent. MajorPowell-Cotton’s ancestor, John Powell (1721-1783), bought thehouse and adjacent farm as an investment in 1777. His nephew,

John Powell Powell (1769-1849) demolished the mansion, replacing it with an elegantRegency home. Several rooms in Quex House are open to the public during the SummerSeason and provide a special addition to a visit to the Museum. After two hundred yearsQuex House remains a family home. Its relaxed atmosphere and character areimmediately appreciated when visitors step from the Museum galleries into the late-Victorian Oriental Drawing Room. House Stewards are on hand towelcome visitors and provide further information about the house, thefamily, the paintings and furnishings.

MUSEUMThe Museum at Quex had its origins in a pavilion built in the garden

in 1896 to house the growing collection of trophies gathered by the youngPercy Powell-Cotton on a series of amazing trips to the wildest areas ofnorthern India and Tibet. Although a hunter and collector all his life, fromthe beginning Percy was also interested in the people of the countries he travelled in and hebrought back examples of a wide range of material that illustrates their lives and cultures. Many subsequent trips to Africa added to the collections and, inspired by his lifetime of traveland adventure, Major Powell-Cotton created a unique Museum to reflect the experiences ofhis travels and show the world to people at home in England. Following the death of MajorPowell-Cotton in 1940, his son Christopher constructed additional galleries to display thefamily collections of archaeology, ceramics and weaponry. These galleries link physicallywith the ground floor suite of rooms in Quex House. The Museum now comprises eightgalleries displaying many significant and world-class objects, many equal in importance tothose held in national collections. The Museum Shop stocks gifts to suit all ages.

Your Letters

Note from Yvonne Chapman - Hi there, just wanted to say about a nicehappening. Whilst walking over the weekend, along Watchester Lane, I decided tomake my way through the wooded area towards Monkton Road country track.

I stood there a while at the entrance, and some lads who were playing in the woodsby the tree swing, were so helpful, and when I enquired about the track, they said“We’ll take you there”. One was concerned about the steep section of one part of thetrack and I said I am sure I can manage it.

Tom and Adam, two of the lads’ names, were so respectful. I feel I wanted this tobe acknowledged, as the young do not often get any praise do they?

Minster Flower Show Princess 2008& Cliffsend Rosebud Princess (2008Dethroned)

You may remember us publishing an article, alongside this picture, last year, showing Kizzy and her older sister Imogen at Cliffsend having been crowned Miss Rosebud Princess and CliffsendMay Queen respectively. Shortly after that same article appeared in the localThanet papers they were both stripped of their titles by Cllr Mrs. M. Fiander Chairof Cliffsend Parish Council, supposedly because their mum had broken the rulesby sending the article to the press.

Their mum, Vanessa, because of the upset it caused to her daughters, foughtthat decision via the Standards Board, which resulted in them requiring the saidCllr to write an apology to the two girls. We are also reliably informed that shehas been suspended from the Parish Council for 2 months whilst she undergoessome retraining on how to be a councillor.

Notes from Minster Parish CouncilMeeting 2nd June 09

The Parish Council have written to local landowners in an attempt to findsome ground for allotments.

TDC have been advised that the resignation of Cllr Mrs Pickering, givenby her son who has power of attorney, has been accepted.

The hedge bordering the Persimmon development along the “BumpyTrack” is now their responsibility and TDC have been approached to request themto cut it back to make the track passable again with ease.

The Police reported there had been 12 crimes in the area, plus illegalfly-tipping in Marsh Farm Rd and illegal fishing down at the river. Problems withtraffic movements in Monkton Rd especially at school run times were also notedand this will be referred to the next Policy Committee meeting.

CCTV is to be erected at High St Car Park to help alleviate the continualdumping of rubbish around the recycling skips and also in an attempt to deter the“other” users of the public toilets.

Minster Station Parkway Status - MPC have advised KCC that they aretotally against any plans to upgrade the station.

KCC Highways have been contacted re condition of footpath in HighStreet.

Did you know that there are now at least 40 million Internetusers in the UK? With a population of around 60 million, that’stwo thirds of us in the UK now ‘surfing’ the world wide web.

Therefore it’s no wonder that the Internet offers such a variety of services. It’s hard to know where to find great websites. And with such a choice,

where on earth would you start? About a year ago, the Telegraph newspaperpublished a list of ‘101 most useful websites’ and I’ve been taking a good lookthrough the list to see what they recommend. Here’s a few of my favourites....

BBC iPlayer (www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer)On demand television and radio programmes from the BBC.TV Guide (www.tvguide.co.uk)TV listings for terrestrial and cable television.VideoJug (www.videojug.com)Videos on how to do just about anything - from golf shots to onionchopping.Nationmaster (www.nationmaster.com)Giant database of statistics for every country of the world.NHS Direct (www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk)Information about health and illness including a facility to check yoursymptoms.Age Concern (www.ageconcern.org.uk)Information, advice and products for the more mature of us.Money Saving Expert (www.moneysavingexpert.com)Discount tips and tricks to save money - free to use, free of adverts.Walk It (www.walkit.com)Pedestrian route finder for larger uk cities including London, Edinburghand Manchester.Uncyclopedia (www.uncyclopedia.org)A spoof encyclopedia where very little is true, but it is very funny. The Telegraph (www.telegraph.co.uk)News, sport, travel, lifestyle and all you would expect from the DailyTelegraph.

OPEN GARDENS 2009MM normally have a presence in the churchyard promoting the magazine, but

this year myself and my wife were coerced into opening our own garden so thechurchyard was taken off the agenda.

I spent the whole day on Saturday sitting at my makeshift “desk” inside myfront porch, with a continually topped up mug of tea and ample nosh, busily typingup articles for this issue and having some gentle banter with our visitors.

We know people are always going to be polite on such occasions but we neverexpected the really good comments we received, considering our “estate” is lessthan postage stamp size and doesn’t take an awful lot of time to peruse.

We must admit we had many evenings and weekends beforehand saying toourselves why ever did we agree to do this, but we are quite glad we took part, atleast we can now say “been there, done that”.

Saturday saw me out at 6.30am watering the baskets and pots and although theday was a bit dull and overcast, with the help of our eldest grandson, Tom, we saw91 visitors through our gate, which surprised us, as we are a bit detached frommany of the other gardens that were open. The monotony of the grey clouds wasbroken however by numerous sightings of various aircraft that were obviously hereto attend the show at Margate.

Sunday we were setup and ready for re-opening at 10am and by 11.40 weeventually saw our first visitor, only 41 gracing our steps all day. Our daughtercame to help but wasn’t feeling too well so we sent her home to recuperate readyfor school on Monday.

It was really nice to have the 3 Carnival Princesses visit, but a pity that Cassiehad to work and was unable to attend. Many have asked would we do it again ? Probably not - It was far less hassle havingthe gazebo in the churchyard - so we’ll probably be back there again next year, andanyway I missed my Ploughman’s and the constant mugs of tea from the OldSchools Ray, Editor

We’ll hopefully have colour pictures in next month’s issueof this event and the Flower Show

CANTERBURY TALESOn the 15th May 2009 all of year 5 went to Canterbury Tales. I’ll

tell you about the day. First at about 10:30 we all walked to the trainstation and the French got their coach. On the train Tyler, Jaina, AndI read a magazine about fashion, then we met the French children inWestgate gardens.

We had a little snack and we got split up into groups .I was withMr Packer and Ellie was with Mr Brett. Our French partners werevery nice .My French partner was called Noemie and Lea was Ellie’s.So we walked to the Norman Castle and went inside it and then weall had lunch in Dane John Park.

After that we walked through the city of Canterbury and thengot to Canterbury Tales. I didn’t like Canterbury Tales at all .Therewere Dummies of people, but they were very scary. We got a walkietalkie thing that we had to hold by our ear, mine was very loud so Ihad to turn it down. Alice was very scared so she was hugging MrPacker and Kyle was hugging Rosie too .I thought that Canterburytales was very scary and frightening I wouldn’t like to go there again.

My group and I finally got to go to the shops and I bought akeying, badge and a very cold Ice cream .Then it was time to go backto school, but we didn’t want to go.

My mum took lots of pictures and we said our goodbyes. Myfriend Libby started to cry because she didn’t want her Frenchpartner Chloe to go. My friends and I all gave Libby a hug and ourFrench partners one too. We loved the day out and can’t wait to seeour French partners again In France.

Trooping the Colour

On the 13th June 2009 the Queen has her official birthday. Heractual birthday was the 21st April 2009. Each year her officialbirthday is marked by a military parade and march past. This isknown as trooping the colour. They carry the flag as they march past.

Each June the whole royal family attend the parade ceromy onHorse Guards Parade, Whitehall, London.

The Queen receives a salute from thousands of guardsmen(carrying the Regiments flag).

In 1748, the celebration of the official birthday of the sovereignwas amalgamated (merged) with the Trooping of the Colour.

Trooping the Colour comes from when the Colours (regimentalflag of the regiment) was trooped in front of soldiers to make sureeveryone could recognise their flag in battle. This is the biggestparade of the year.

When yr 6 went to Hindleap for the week they had a lovely time, one of my best activities was the forest adventure we got verymuddy and wet. It was a Tuesday and we had two instructorsSteve and Ben. Steve said that he didn’t know where he was takingus, or if we were going through deep or shallow water, we weren’tin that deeper water but we were walking in some shallow waterthen it came up to our waist! After we had gone through the water, we went up a slit hill at thetop it was like a swimming pool of mud. Then we went to where we were meant to pray to the forest godbut, we found out that wasn’t the case because Ben told us thewords to say and they were “hose me Dan”, when we said thatSteve sprayed us with a hose. We were soaking wet and went backto the centre for a nice shower!

This Mercedes is becoming a regular visitor to our Rogues Gallery, as it seems this spot in Norton Drive is probably marked outespecially for them, definitely no thought whatsoever for people with pushchairs or mobility scooters. The van although notillegally parked was causing a blind obstruction for entry and exit to the adjacent property in Fairfield Rd - whilst the VW Golfparked at The Bell was snapped before the owner had had a drink so one wonders how they parked when it they went home !!
