The shark tank was a memorable part of the trip. “My favorite thing was getting to spend time with friends and getting to see to see all the different types of animals at the aquarium,” Sandra Vasquez said. 2) Observe • Junior Eddie Chavez observes a animal in the display. The aquarium contained species from all around the world. “I love the shark exhibit,” Chavez said. “Ever since I was a little boy, all I ever wanted to be was shark boy like the Disney movie.” Photos by Ankit Chahal. On the Saturday, April 2, selected members of the KHS Science Club took their club field trip to the Dallas World Aquarium. The students were chaperoned by science club sponsor Lance Homeniuk, and special ed. teacher Kathy Homeniuk. In order to go on this trip, the members had to have a particular number of science club hours. After arriving at the Dallas World Aquarium, the students split into groups and visited different exhibits for two hours. “My favorite thing about our science club trip to the Dallas World Aquarium was we had a chance to experience the wildlife under the ocean, and research it, and represent KHS,” sophomore Quavion Hollins said. Later on, the members departed Dallas and had the opportunity to shop and have lunch at the Broadway Square mall in Tyler. “It was different because we actually got to do more than one activity and even though it was educational, it was lots of fun, and I enjoyed getting to learn about all the animals in the aquarium, and also getting to shop at the mall,” junior Sandra Vazquez said. As most students on the trip would describe it, the trip was enjoyable and educational at the same time. “Trip was a perfect mixture of educational and fun,” sophomore Anna Vega said. Science club visits Dallas World Aquarium 5/6 Captain america: civil war As another spring semester nears its end, the band and orchestra readied themselves for their annual UIL Concert and Sightreading competitions. The varsity and junior varsity band competed at the UIL Concert/Sightreading competition in Mt. Pleasant on April 7 at Mt. Pleasant High School. The varsity band took home a sweepstakes trophy, placing first in both their concert pieces and sightreading. The junior varsity received a 2 on their concert pieces and a 1 on sightreading. “When I found that we received sweepstakes, I was excited because it meant that the seniors had received sweepstakes all 4 years,” senior Jordan Fulgham said. The varsity and the junior varsity orchestra competed in the UIL Orchestra Concert/ Sightreading on April 19 in Tyler, Texas at Robert E. Lee High School. Like they were hoping and working for, both orchestras took home a sweepstakes trophy. Although all four groups did extremely well, the road to success was not easy. It required hours of dedicated work. “I felt so relieved that both of our KHS orchestras got sweepstakes. We worked very hard, and we were overwhelmed by the stress of the competition, however, we managed to pull through,” sophomore Juan Lira said. Dayana Sanchez Staff Writer Ankit Chahal Staff Writer The Regional Champion Bulldogs ended their season at the state tournament, being one of the only teams to have both girls and boys teams representing their school in the state tournament. “I knew we had it in us,” senior Jose Vega said, “It was a great season even though it didn’t turn out how we wanted it.” For the boys, the players who attended and played at the state tournament were Tomas Tapia, Spencer Stegall, Christian Galvan, Jose Contreras, Jose Gonzalez, Eli Velasquez, Austin Word, Andrew Espinoza, David Garcia, Livan Torres, Yonatan Contreras, Jesus Gonzalez, Pablo Venegas, Emmanuel Ceja, Jose Vega, Jordi Contreras, Jaime Veloz, Mateo Meraz, Brandon Hernandez, Raul Cedillo, Elian Torres, Brandon Espinoza, Jovany Gonzales, Tucker Konczak, Diego Huerta and Kaleb Jett. For the girls, their players were Katy Raby, Daria Rossum, Angelina Chavez, Kaitlan Word, Makylia Austin, Leslie Bennett, Jade Norris, Emily Nutt, Jasmine Wheat, Tori Shipman, Cinthya Alvarez, Leslie Anaya, Chelsea Espinosa, Vanesa Gonzalez, Sam Watkins, Casey Trejo, Ashley Castillo, Irelyn Williams and Bryana French. “This season has been a good season because we made it this far,” senior Chelsea Espinosa said, “I’m really going to miss the feeling of stepping on the field. Some advice I’d like to offer to underclassmen is to keep pushing forward and keep making Kilgore proud.” Regional Champions • U.I.L. Coaches Jerry Martin and Amy Bates discuss events with sophomores Mikaila Williams and Bailey Green at Texas A&M Commerce last Saturday. Bailey Green advances to state after placing 1st in Feature writing, 2nd in Headline writing, and 2nd in News writing. Mikaila Williams placed 5th in Editorial writing and will go as an alternate. “When I was in the feature competition, I had four minutes left to have the completed copy of my story and my printer wouldn’t work,” Green said. “I had run to some random competitior’s computer with flash drive in hand and use their computer to print. As soon as I was finished I heard a girl three rows back ask if she could use my flashdrive.” State competition will be May 24 in Austin. On the Saturday, April 2, selected members of the KHS Science Club took their club field trip to the Dallas World Aquarium.

The students were chaperoned by science club sponsor Lance Homeniuk, and special ed. teacher Kathy Homeniuk.

In order to go on this trip, the members had to have a particular number of science club hours.

After arriving at the Dallas World Aquarium, the students split into groups and visited different exhibits for two hours.

“My favorite thing about our science club trip to the Dallas World Aquarium was we had

a chance to experience the wildlife under the ocean, and research it, and represent KHS,” sophomore Quavion Hollins said.

As another spring semester nears its end, the band and orchestra readied themselves for their annual UIL Concert and Sightreading competitions.

The varsity and junior varsity band competed at the UIL Concert/Sightreading competition in Mt. Pleasant on April 7 at Mt. Pleasant High School.

The varsity band took home a sweepstakes trophy, placing

first in both their concert pieces and sightreading. The junior varsity received a 2 on their concert pieces and a 1 on sightreading.

“When I found that we received sweepstakes, I was excited because it meant that the seniors had received sweepstakes all 4 years,” senior Jordan Fulgham said.

The Regional Champion Bulldogs ended their season at the state tournament, being one of the only teams to have both girls and boys teams representing their school in the state tournament.

“I knew we had it in us,” senior Jose Vega said, “It was a great season even though it didn’t turn out how we wanted it.”

For the girls, their players were Katy Raby, Daria Rossum, Angelina Chavez, Kaitlan Word, Makylia Austin, Leslie Bennett, Jade Norris, Emily Nutt, Jasmine Wheat, Tori Shipman, Cinthya Alvarez, Leslie Anaya, Chelsea Espinosa, Vanesa Gonzalez, Sam Watkins, Casey Trejo, Ashley Castillo, Irelyn Williams and Bryana French.

“This season has been a good season because we made it this far,” senior Chelsea Espinosa said, “I’m really going to miss the feeling of stepping on the field. Some advice I’d like to offer to underclassmen is to keep pushing forward and keep making Kilgore proud.”
