� The „Miskolc Week”, organised in the 1930s,was a great success and even years later, thelocal and national press published articles on it.

We are prone to talk about Miskolc as if it hadnever had a diverse culture, patrons and goodevent organisers, or as if the city and its sur-roundings had not been attractive. That MiskolcWeek is also an example today, since the city of60000 people had 30000 visitors, who all left withgood memories. The railway company gave adiscount to everyone arriving at Miskolc, advertis-ing the one-week programme as penny tourism.„Miskolc is a nodal point of tourism, holiday-mak-ing and bathing,” a slogan goes, another recom-mends Miskolc as the city of churches and theSzinva as small Venice. If you think of churchconcerts, choir festivals, the Collegium Musicumseries or the rediscovery of the Szinva, you mayconsider each as a historical forerunner. � The 1930s went by in the spirit of the creationof Greater Miskolc, and a real big city revenuewas made out of tourism, the events famous na-tionwide. By the middle of the century the greatercity was formed, and the 1970s and the 1980sbrought about another boom in cultural life. Bythen the name ‘festival’ had become accepted.

The Miskolc Film festival really opened a newera in what was then the Rónai Cultural Centre.From 1964, for decades, in May the citychanged, the film makers came to live here fromthe capital, had debates and the TV broadcastnews from Miskolc for a week. But this also has itsversion today, because the significance of theCinefest events goes beyond the borders. Theyoung film makers’ first international festival wasorganised in autumn 2004, and today we can al-ready greet Oscar Prize winning directors inMiskolc as well.

Our art and music culture also draws upon theculture-supporting approach of the city council backthen. Although officially the Miskolc WinterExhibition came into being only in 1970, the serieshad begun in 1955, and perhaps this event has thelongest history. The 20th Winter Exhibition opened

in 2009 in memory of Lajos Szalay. The numbershould not trick anyone, the event has assumed aregional character, that is how the jubilee exhibitionis to be interpreted. Mention should be made of theMiskolc Graphics Biennale, which also started at thebeginning of the 1960s, and became international afew years ago preserving its half-century-old tradi-tions.

Belonging to the festivals of the same era is theBorsodi Fonó (Spinner), which has grown into anInternational Folk Festival by today, featuringdancers, singers and folk artists. Emphasising that Iam only mentioning examples and not a chronologi-cal order, the International Formation Dance Festivalalso started at that time, along with the Kaláka Folk

festival, which celebrated its 30th anniversary inthe Castle of Diósgyőr in 2009. It was from themid-80s that Sándor Benkó and his band be-came well-known for the residents of Miskolc,which has become a Dixieland Festival, andlaunched a couple of local bands as well.

This era is also hallmarked by the Art andPropaganda Office, and we could read the nameof Antal Flach on each programme booklet asthe publisher and active director. Then after thechange of the regimes, the tourism structuretransformed. This is how the Hungarian TourismCompany came into being as a legal successor,with the aim of coordinating events inland, or touse an unpleasant word, marketing, as well asexporting, the offers abroad. From 2008 the reg-istration and classification of the festivals started.Miskolc is taking a good position in the list ofclassified festivals.

This Budapest-based company selects a slo-gan each year, preferring a great and importanttheme: we have had the years of wine, bath andmedicinal tourism, and last year was hallmarkedby cultural tourism. 2010 will be the year of festi-vals, in support of the city of Pécs, which be-came Europe’s cultural capital in front of Miskolc.Out of the proposal made in 2005, in which weproclaimed that culture has an important citybuilding role, a lot of programmes have been re-

alised, and our festivals got professional classifica-tion. The Bartók+… Opera Festival has become arenowned event series since 2001. It is not an exag-geration to mention Miskolc as a festival city, sincethe Diósgyőr Castle Festival, the Kaláka FolkFestival, the Dixieland Festival, the Young FilmMakers’ International Festival and numerous otherevents have received a classification from the na-tional professional federation.

In a financial plight that cannot be called easy,Miskolc still makes a point of supporting culturalevents, be it music, dance, film, art, theatre or folkart. This was probably taken into account whenMiskolc was awarded the title „Hungarian City ofCulture” in 2008.

In the Szinva Terrace the girls are waiting for us on a date. The sculpture ofthe three nice ladies was made by László Kutas. Many talk about them as thethree Graces. Apart from being pretty and nice, they also have the rare fe-

male characteristic that they turn up on the date and wait for the partner patient-ly if they set out on a walk in the inner city. That is what we are going to do nowas well. First, however, we give tribute to the statue of Mancs (Paws) the dog, thepride of Miskolc. He deserves it because he can pride on merits that would evenbring credit to a man: he saved the lives of hundreds of people, men, women,children in Hungary and worldwide with his owner, László Lehóczki. The Spider

Rescue Team was earlier awarded with the Standard Award of the city, and alsoobtained an international fame. Mancs is no longer alive; his statue, BorbálaSzanyi’s work, is regularly dressed into flowers by the residents of Miskolc.

Once we spend so much time with the works of art ornamenting the SzinvaTerrace, we have to mention the Apples too, which is the work of Gusztáv Kraitz,an artist living in Sweden but originating from Miskolc. The fruit, made of pyro-granite, cheer up the spirits of passers-by even on rainy days with their colourand shape evoking summer. From the terrace you can walk towards the HighStreet via the Kandia Close over the bridge ornamented by hundreds of locks.

Lovers and newly weds hang them there to symbolise by thisgesture that they are never going to part. Walking through thepassage way, you find yourself on the corner of the theatre,the entrance to Déryné Street.

The first stone-built theatre of today’s Hungary, opened in1823, is one of the most renowned, oldest buildings.

It is worth visiting the Museum of Theatrical Art and Actingand find out who played in the theatre as contemporaries ofand successors to Déryné, after whom the street wasnamed.

Déryné Street await you with a lot of pleasant restaurantsand pubs, but they are only as busy as in the photo on red-letter holidays, for instance, when the city is blazing in festivalfever. In summer the centre is full of opera lovers, in winterthe visitors of the meat jelly festival, including residents ofMiskolc and visitors from other cities fill the place. In certaintimes of the day the bustle is so big that the drink bought atthe long counters may spill over, be it an excellent pálinka –say, apricot pálinka of Gönc, of Furmint or Hárslevelű winefrom the Hegyalja. And it is good luck if it is only white wine,because the stain made by the ruby-colour and ruby-shinered wine is very hard to remove. It is surely not easier to getrid of the greasy stain of meat jelly either. But you must take arisk as much as that, because it is beyond imagination to gohome from a jelly festival without tasting everything.

Déryné Street converges on the recently refurbished Heroes’ Square. Thesquare has changed a lot, but its character is still determined by someold buildings, mostly by the Minorite church, the Földes Ferec Grammar

School adjoined to it, and the synagogue. The square is ornamented by PéterSzanyi sculptor’s work, which reminds us of the war heroes of Miskolc ad theheroes of the 1956 revolution and war of independence.

If you are looking around in the inner city on a hot summer day, already thesight of the fountains of the square is refreshing. It is not inappropriate to washyour hands or face or put your feet into the pond.

Our remote destination is the Avas. However, before setting out to climb thestairs leading to the top, let us take a detour and have a closer look at the Plankchurch, which is one of the most interesting church buildings of the city.

If the guest we are escorting is well-informed, they will ask: Is this the churchthat burnt down a few years ago? The question is relevant, since theTransylvanian style wooden church fell victim to a fire, more precisely, arson.The credit for reconstructing the city’s sight from wood taken from theTransylvanian mountains according to the original plans goes to two local archi-tects.

Briefly about the past of the church. In 1698 another wooden church wasstanding on this site, which was rebuilt several times, and then in 1938 was final-ly demolished and a Transylvania style plank church was planned in its placeaccording to the plans of Bálint Szeghalmy, municipal engineer. This is what fellvictim to the fire on 4 December 1997. The church was rebuilt from public dona-tions according to the original plans and was consecrated on 2 May 1999. On 29October 2000 the architect Bálint Szeghalmy and his wife’s ashes, brought backfrom Germany, were buried near the church. The inauguration of the newlyplanned organ occurred at the same time, with which the church art ensemblebecame complete.

Waving good bye to the plank church, now we can really set out to the Avas.You do not have to walk too long, it only takes 15-20 minutes to get there. Enroute make sure to visit the oldest and beautiful square of Miskolc, ErzsébetSquare. That is where the country’s first full-figure Kossuth statue is standing.

Passing through the square, stairs lead up to the most famous church of thecity, the memorial Calvinist church. You can listen to wonderful concerts here,especially ever since the new organ with 25 registers was inaugurated in the au-tumn of 2006, which was made under the guidance of Gábor Lehotka, theworld-famous organ artist.

The foundations of the church were first laid in the age of the Árpád dynasty,and the church was rebuilt several times until it gained its shape today. It does nothave a tower, so this function is fulfilled by the belfry next to it. The square-shapedshingle-roofed belfry is more than 430 years old. Its striking clock has been in ser-

vice since 1740, but after the ravages of time ruined it, it was provided with a newtime measuring structure. The costs were paied by Dr. Lajos Győri Nagy, lawyer,and his brother, and the tower clock first chimed in 1941. The wonderfully chimingstructure is part of the image of the city. For a long time it was also the signal ofthe local radio. The Miskolc National theatre also chose it as its signal.

The new

Achurchyard monument surrounds the church. Besides, Miskolc has nofewer than 34 cemeteries. 14 are managed by the municipality, and therest belongs to the Catholic, Calvinist, Lutheran and the Israelite denomi-

nations.Cemeteries are also called sleeping cities, signalling that the city preserves

the memory of past generations. In the Avas and other cemeteries you can findthe names and graves of many distinguished citizens of Miskolc. Under the ex-pert guidance of local historians, hundreds of students worked in the summerholiday to write a lengthy, so far missing, work, the Pantheon of Miskolc. It showsthe plan of the cemeteries and accurately defines the place (plot and grave num-ber) where the famous peopleare resting. Some names fromthe residents of the „sleepingcity”: Déryné found her restingplace in Saint Anne’s cemetery,József Budai botanic in thePlank cemetery, József Benkeactor in the Mindszenti ceme-tery, and József Butykai, 1848honvéd officer in the Avascemetery, while the imposinggrave of László Palóczy is alsoin the Avas cemetery.

The Avas has many facets.One is very cheerful: there areabout 800 cellars and winehouses attached to them wherethe residents of Miskolc usedto live their social life, wherethey organised merriments andtasted wines. The spots of en-tertainment are reviving, andnumerous other privatelyowned cellars have also beentransformed into places ofamusement that meet all de-mands.

The determining building of the other facet of the building is the Calvinistchurch monument and the attached belfry.

Past and present, piety and gaiety – all on the Avas. The hill, at the foot ofwhich the ancient Miskolc was located, where prehistoric man, called „FatherFlint” was making his tools tens of thousands of years ago.

It would not be fair if we did not finish our tour at the lookout tower of Avas,because from the terrace an excellent view opens onto the city. About thelookout tower, we should remark that its forerunner was the Transylvanianstyle wooden tower which got a tank shot and burnt during the revolution in1956.

The exhibition „From Csontváry to Kondor” displaysthe nicest drawings of the Antal–Lusztig collection,providing a cross-section of the 300 years of graphicart in the first three months of 2010. In the MiskolcGallery nearly 80 works are on display, demonstratingthe development of the Hungarian graphic art from thebeginning of the 20th century to the 60s and 70s.Csontváry’s and Gulácsy’s masterpieces, the natural-ist drawings of Károly Ferenczi from the beginning ofthe century and the works of all significant Hungarianartists, including the graphics of Gyula Hincz andJános Vajda to Béla Kondor, appear on the walls ofthe Rákóczi house.

In spring Ádám Szentpétery, artist and art teacherfrom Kosice has an exhibition in the City Art Museum.Rational compositional balance and mathematicalcombinations are the constituent part of his works.

In 2010 the Marosvásárhely-born György CsabaBorgó will be 60 years old. An exhibition will be heldon the occasion of his jubilee from his statues, graph-ics, paintings and large-sized carpets. The abstract-emblematic device system of his paintings shows sim-ilarities with Miro’s surrealist world.

The exhibition entitled „Works inspiring to lead agod-fearing life” displays the masterpieces of theHungarian church art from the Sándor Bálint collec-tion, showing the stations of the crucifixion with thehelp of paintings and statues.

An exhibition entitled „A new city is being built”shows the development of Miskolc as a city between1945 and 1975. It will be held as the fourth episode ofthe Industrial track project in the Miskolc Gallery fromApril to June

After World War 2, Miskolc became NorthernHungary’s new commercial and industrial centre withits population of 60000, and developed into a big in-dustrial centre and Hungary’s second most populouscity over a few years. With the intensive growth of thecity, the space expanded and the limits of the citywent beyond the borders fixed in earlier times.However, the special attitude of people is not deter-mined by the objective structure of space in the firstplace, but by the subjective image emerging throughperception, which demonstrates itself in the fact thatnumerous works of architecture became the symbolof expressing a political regime, and a period, in pri-vate life.

„My memories form the beat era” will be one of themost exciting exhibitions of the Miskolc Gallery CityArt Museum from June to September. Miskolc has

played a significant part in the history of Hungarianrock. Since the rock festival of 1973, also known asthe Hungarian Woodstock, accompanied by scandals,significant festivals, rock concerts, events have takenplace in Miskolc, the club life has been intense, andthe first large-scale rock photo exhibition was alsoheld here. In preparation of the foundation of the rockmuseum, a significant initiative in music and culturalhistory, a series of exhibitions and concerts will beheld in the summer of 2010: the events of remem-brance. The exhibition entitled „My memories of theBeat Era” constructs the youth of what is today themiddle generation from the personal memories of mu-sicians and the audience, overwriting the official histo-ry of the Kádár Era. The objects, photos, relics, recordcovers, film trailers, soundtracks will revive through thestories told by those remembering: musicians andfans. Thus in the rooms the main part is played by thestorytellers: today’s faces appearing on TV screens,the podium talks and the occasional playing of music.The memories, however, are complemented by amuseologist-historian work, so that the bygone erashould be understood by young people as well. Thus,the exhibition room will be the spot of rememberingon the one hand, and a large-scale scenery for theyoung and retro travel for fathers and sons, on theother hand. Meanwhile, rock music is played allalong…

The Robert Capa exhibition, held in the LudwigMuseum last year created a stir. The photo se-ries, commemorating historical events will beon display in Miskolc in the second half of2010. The Hungarian National Museum boughtnearly 1000 photos of the most distinguishedwar photo reporter Capa, who, besides, was ofHungarian origin. A selection of these photoswill be on display in the City Art Museum, too.

A Women’s art festival will be held in theMiskolc gallery, with the topic of female mod-ernisation. Several displays will be related tothe event series – for instance, a historical ex-hibition on the work of significant 20th centuryfemale intellectuals and artists from AnnaLesznai to Mari Törőcsik, in cooperation withthe film institution and Petőfi Literary Museum.With another material, answers to the questionof similarities among the female painters ofthe Nagybánya School will be sought – insearch of a characteristic female line with thehelp of their works. In the exhibition entitled

„Objective Beauty”, the Contemporary Art Institutionwill show what ladies look like in today’s art. TheColour – Picture – Time series will also revolvearound this topic in the Museum of the History of theTheatre and Theatrical Art, through the works of sev-eral Hungarian and foreign artists, especially made forthis occasion.

Ancillary programs include Women’s school, talkingabout adult education, with an emphasis on the groupformations, education, body image, preoccupationsand the world view of mothers with small children.

Apart from these, an exhibition is planned in theMiskolc Gallery entitled „The city architecture ofMiskolc in the plan-order era”, and the Tolcsva LandArt colony of artists will be presented. Whereas in thechamber exhibitions of the Contemporary ArtInstitution Róbert Batykó, Tamás Buddha Kovács,Krisztina Erdei, Katharina Roters, Mathilde Mestrallet,Gyula Júliusz will appear with their works in 2010.

A Lajos Szalay memorial room and research pointwill be opened in the Petró house in April. Miskolc cel-ebrated the centenary of the birth of Lajos Szalaygraphic artist, related to Miskolc in many ways. Thememorial room will be refurbished in the Petró house,which does not only aim to show Szalay’s life but, onoccasions, it will also display some of Szalay’s worksstored in public and private collections, and will pro-vide an outlook to the 20th century Hungarian drawingart as well.

VISITORS AS WELL AS LOCALS THAT ONLY KNOW THIS

GOLDMINE FROM HEARSAY IS ENOUGH TO VIEW FOR

SEVERAL DAYS.

The core of the collection, whichpresents the costumes of theCarpathian Basin, is made up of themore than 300 outfits. Walkingamong them, the visitor can take ajourney in time, since these embroi-dered, pearl-ornamented dresses areonly taken out of the wardrobes ofvillage rooms on holiday – if they aretaken out at all. Just consider: thevarious materials are transient, evenwith the best caution. They do not re-sist time as successfully as someother objects of the Image Museum,for example the items of the sectionentitled „People’s Super”, showingthe object culture of the 1950s.

György Barna, collector, hasraised a monument to the memory ofone-time retailers and artisans. He

arranged small shops and work-shops with contemporary tools andfurniture. It is easy, especially forthose belonging to the older genera-tion, to imagine the merchant behindthe counter, making out the bill in inkpencil. The „English gentlemen’s tai-lor”, clapping huge scissors, and thecobbler, cooper, shoemaker andother one-time masters appear in thefilm of our remembrance.

Displayed objects also include op-tical tools, box-shaped photographi-cal apparatuses, office machines andminerals and Russian bronze iconsfrom the 18th and 19th centuries.

Russian icons and crosses, castfrom copper and bonze are a rareand special part of the legacy of thechurch art of Eastern Christianity.

The rich gallery of HermanOttó Museum is open at 28Görgey u. all year round. In theexhibition building of the museum(1 Papszer u.) Zoltán Dömötör’sprivate collection is presentedunder the title „Ages, Photos,Cameras”. Visitors interested inphotography can see the exhibi-tion all year round. In the HermanOttó Memorial Home (in ErzsébetAlley, Lillafüred) you can visit anexhibition entitled „No honour, justobligation” on the life and work ofthe great scientist. The samevenue also houses the SzászEndre Collection and an archaeo-logical exhibition entitled theBajcsa Castle.

The Museum of Acting is locatedon the plot that was once the place ofHungary’s first stone-built theatre, andsummarises the history of the Theatrefrom the 19th century beginnings untiltoday: beside the legendary figures oftheatrical art – Baba Máthé, PufiFehér, the last Miskolc romantic lead,Tyutyi Ábrahám, among others – thegreatest actors of the Hungarian the-atrical art – from Déryné, through theLatabárs, to Iván Darvas – professabout the Miskolc secret of theatre-making.

Owing to the support of the Ministryof Education and Culture, a renovatedand expanded museum will welcomevisitors from the spring of 2010.

Temporary exhibitions will be heldon downstairs, in the place of the for-mer café, and the ticket office willmoved here as well, and, as a newservice, a museum shop will open, of-fering theatrical publications, DVDs

and souvenirs. The exhibition hall up-stairs will preserve the spirit of thefirst permanent exhibition and ad-mired relics, but will have an imageadjusting to the new museum expec-tations, including interactive elements.In archive recordings, Tivadar Bilicsi,Ferenc Bessenyei, Gábor Agárdi, andothers, talk about the great momentsof theatrical art in Miskolc. As a novel-ty, the memorable groups and loca-tions of the amateur theatrical art inMiskolc will be presented as well.

Children can spend playful hoursamong the walls of the museum: theycan be familiarised with the world ofthe theatre with the help of variouscreative activities starting from puz-zles, through colouring pictures, to themaking of paper theatres. Dressing upin theatrical costumes, a programmeof the Museum nights much loved byboth children and adults has becomea permanent feature in the museum.

After 9 years we may claim that those that believed that the music-lovingpublic of Miskolc, its theatre and historic symphony orchestra, along with theknowledge of the experts and the sponsors supporting the theatre would pro-vide enough basis for the opera festival to strike root were right. Apart fromthe cultural aspects, it cannot be ne-glected that the annually recurringhigh-standard event polishes thename and the fame of the city, andattracts visitors from all corners ofthe country, and, more and more,from beyond the borders. In short: itcontributes to promoting tourism.Schönberg’s Moses and Aaron willbe presented in the Palace of Arts inJanuary. The world premier of themusical delicacy was at the Bartók +Vienna International Opera Festivalin 2009. The opera was stagedunder the professional guidance ofZoltán Kocsis, with the help of theNational Philharmonic Orchestra.The twofold Kossuth Award winnermusician has written the third act ofthe opera, and the premiere of theentire three-act opera will be held atthe beginning of the year, accompa-nied with a great international inter-est. Not only the Schönberg inheri-tors are welcome to the premiere butbig music publishers also have inter-est in the piece and have indicatedtheir presence at the premiere.

The programme is already the prefiguration of the summer opera festival,which is ten years old – said Tamás Bátor, Managing Director of the festival,who plans to organise a festive event series, worthy of the jubilee. The aim isto maintain the high standard.

We have invited an elite Spanish dancing ensemble, an Byzantine Orthodoxchurch music choir and an Irish soloist to the festival – a few of the pro-grammes that are to make the event more colourful – since we would like toinvolve twenty seven countries of the EU in this year’s event series with thehelp of arts, mainly music. Even if not every country has a Verdi or a Puccinibut each has cultural assets that are worth showing in Miskolc. At the 2010festival numerous already well-established programmes will continue – such asfamiliarising the public with children’s operas. Last year Erzsébet Szőnyi wascelebrated with staging a fairy tale opera in Miskolc, and now an opera bySándor Szokolai will be played. In coproduction with the State Theatre ofKosice a ballet night will be held where beside Bartók’s Wooden Prince, a taleopera by a Slovak composer, Vladimir Godár, will be on repertory. Arm in armwith the Metropolitan Operetta Theatre, Puccini’s Gianni Schicci will be readyfor the festival, but another comic opera, Ferenc Erkel’s Sarolta, will also beshown, which is rarely heard even in Hungary. The opera will be the joint pro-duction of the Hungarian Opera of Kolozsvár (Cluj) and the festival. With thisand by presenting Erkel’s Bánk bán we would like to remember the composeron the opera festival in the Erkel year. We also wish to continue the processthat we started together with the National Philharmonic Orchestra in the histo-ry of the festival in Miskolc – explains the Managing Director – we presentRichard Strauss’s Daphne with Andrea Rost in the lead role, who débuts herein this opera. To match her in the production, we have invited excellentHungarian and international soloists, and the musical director of the productionis Zoltán Kocsis. Bartók’s Bluebeard is an inomissible programme, and cham-ber operas will be in the foreground as well at the 2010 Bartók festival, whichis to demonstrate the colourful musical culture of Europe’s nations.

A legendary oldmusical instrumentSTRANGE FIGURE IN THE STREETS AND SQUARES

Even those may be amused atthe opera and castle festivals thatdo not view a single performance,do not buy a ticket for any concertin the inner city or Diósgyőr, butfeel content walking in street andsquares, admiring the strangelydressed figures on stilts thatmarch at such occa-sions. You can onlycompare this commo-tion to old circus audi-ence attracting march-es. But, in fact, onlybecause this is also aform of advertising, al-though some of theattractions would alsostand fast by them-selves.

The friendly giants walking onstilts come and go on secure feet inthe swirling crowd as if the woodenlimbs had grown from their bodies.Fire-eaters, pretty majorette teams,clowns compete for the attention ofspectators, and not without success.

Even in such a bizarre company,the folks in the streetstook notice of a largeclown, who playedmusic on his unknowninstrument, or, even ifnot entirely unknown,but a very rarely seeninstrument, the streetorgan, which, accord-ing to an old song,has to be turned fromthe heart.

nights of individual musicians are also very popular. Instead of

theatre, some of these are organised in one of the churches,

the synagogue or the House of Arts.

In 1732 Matthias Bél recorded of Tapolca:„Belonging to the category of rivers, we enlist thesprings and wells healthy for drinking and bathing.We examined one of these, which is situated half amile west behind the Miskolc hill, on a small plain,which is named after its spring Tapolca. No doubtthat in the old days there used to be a bath herewith a building, which, however, having been demolished by the vicissitudes of times, was for along time considered a worthless lake, used by theresidents for washing…

On the same spot in 1217 an abbey of the SaintBendictine order was standing, whose church stillexists in ruins. This abbey was then managed byCount ab Althan, Bishop of Vác, who, acknowledgingthe usefulness of the bath, ordered in the year 1723to erect buildings over the spring suitable forbathing. Earlier there was a single lake into whichthe hot water flowed from the cliff by it…

Its colour is clear, its odour and strength is of salt-petre, which contracts the skin, relieves fever andbrings appetite. Another spring is close by, whosewater is good for the eyes. Other than that, dia-monds may be found in the hot water too.”

Though diamonds have not been found in thewater of Tapolca ever since, many generations havesought cure in it since Matthias Bél was here, and forthem regained health is probably worth as much as aprecious stone. To stay with the diamonds, Tapolca’sbiggest treasure is still the thermal water that sproutshere, along with the Cave Spa built over it.

The city has spent billions of Hungarian forints todevelop the Cave Spa, owing to which one can notonly splash about in the water, but can also use anumber of services, starting from Jacuzzi, via under-water massage, and several types of sauna, torheumatology consultancy, and from mud treatmentto hydro- and electrotherapy, which make the his-toric resort a real Mekka for people suffering fromarthritis and bone diseases. While a few years ago,apart from the cave, only an outdoor pool called ashell after its shape was available for visitors, bytoday, an open-air swimming-pool and lido allurebathers in favour of warm water, satisfactory for allneeds.

Among guests there are a lot of families withsmall children, and little ones enjoy outdoor pools, aslide and a lot of amusements. The developmentcontinues, and we can promise to old guests thatthey will always find something new if they continuevisiting Miskolctapolca in the coming years wherecomfortable hotels and guest houses provide undis-turbed rest.

The so-called boating pond is adjacent to thecave spa where you can try your rowing skills in thecompany of ducks and paddling boats can be rent-ed at the landing stage.

The smallest ones can amuse themselves on theplayground in the ancient park, while the older onescan try their skills in the adventure park. The facility,which only goes back to a history of five years, issituated on the hillside near the lake and covers anarea of 1000 m2.

The adventure park has blue (easier) red (moredifficult) and black (extreme) track systems. Thetracks consist of various bridge units (Vietnamese,timber bridge, swinging bridge, Amazon bridge, etc.),and the level of difficulty changes with the colour oftracks.

Apart from individual candidates, organisedschool and work groups are also welcomed.

Great care is taken about safety,therefore qualified and experi-enced instructors are employed. Inthe attached photo you can seethat special chairs and harnessesspecially designed for this adven-ture park are used and tour guidesescort those balancing at foliageheight to make their experiencesafe.

The park does not only offer ad-venture tours but other entertain-ment opportunities as well. Thearea also has a barbeque place,creating a civilised baking andcooking facility for visitors.Recently, a traditional rick-shapedearthenware stove calledAdventure Farm has been built, inwhich Miskolc style flat cakes andpretzels are baked for children.

According to the owners of thepark, participants may take part ina sort of bodily and mental test ofstrength, obtaining new and uniqueexperiences – they can experiencesituations that they could only seedone by their favourite adventurestory or film hero.

Such outdoor entertainment along with the test ofstrength it offers is very trendy all over the world.

Tapolca’s other novelty, the forest bob trackopera tes in the area bordered by the AdventurePark and the Cave Spa. If you like dashing and youdo not feel dizzy in bends, hop on a bob and dashdown on the runway, which is 800 meter long andhas a 50-metre difference in level. The maximum

speed of the tiny vehicles is40 km/hour, which does notseem too much when youread about it, but if youhave tried this sport, youmay have a different opin-ion.

The operation is ab-solutely environment friend-ly: no lubricant is used, andthe cars are pulled up byan electric engine. The fa-cility was constructed bythe same German companyas the other four bob tracksin Hungary.

At the entrance of theTapolca track an informa-tion board receives visitorsin six languages, providinginformation on the requireddistance between bobs fol-lowing each other and onhow to use the bobs prop-erly. Everyone is warnedbefore departing to complywith the rules and remindedthat any unjustified braverymay entail serious conse-quences. A run of bobsleigh costs 450 HUF (350for children). The facility

has been popular ever since it opened, with thenumber of day visitors reaching a thousand in theseason.

It is curious to note that not only children andadolescents get on the bob but their middle-agedparents and sometimes even their grandparents doso as well. They often get off noting that no suchthing existed when they were young.

We had to wait years for a new swimming poolbut it was worth the wait. The „Citadel”, built inTapolca near the Campus meets the above needsentirely. Sports leaders get an inspiration from thename of the pool, which reads on the facade: DénesKemény (the trainer of the Hungarian water polo

team). The facility was therefore named after a sportexpert that has been making success after successand that sees the guarantee of winning the champi-on’s titles in a lot of work and unbroken enthusiasm.

Beside competitive sport, the facility provides anopportunity for the civilian public of the city to do

sport as more and more of the local citizens wish toplunge into the water. They also count on tourism,since more and more from all over the world thinkthat a rest should not only mean lying about havinga nap or eating and drinking only, but also a bodilyand mental recreation.

New swimming pool in MiskolctapolcaTHERE WAS NO REASON TO BOAST ABOUT THE SWIMMING AND WATER POLO LIFE OF MISKOLC IN THE PREVIOUS YEARS. THE CITY DID NOT HAVE AN INDOOR SWIMMING POOL WHERE THOSE INVOLVED IN WATER SPORTS COULD HAVE TRAINED OR

NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENTS AND COMPETITIONS COULD HAVE BEEN ORGANISED. NEITHER DID THOSE TRYING

TO DO CIVILIAN SPORT OR AT LEAST SWIM REGULARLY HAVE A PLACE TO PROTECT THEIR HEALTH.

It was definitely a splendid idea to make an unused industrial buildingavailable for the young. This is where bikers, skateboarders and rollerskaters have found a place to be, with the financial support of the munic-ipality. Earlier they could only pursue their favourite sport in the squaresand streets of the city using stairs and rails as their race track. (Theyhave not entirely given that up until now.) It speaks for itself that the

Factory Sports Arena’s talent scouting and professional competitionshave been organised for international competitors. There is hardly a dayof operation without the lovers of extreme sports competing in the hugehall from all corners of the country. Once we have presented a past-evoking programme in short, let anotherone stand here, one that involves the future. A call for papers was made forpupils in Miskolc, encouraging them to become marketing experts for one ortwo days and make plans how they would be featured and what they wouldoffer to visitors and with what method.

The first jelly festival was held in 2001 and ever since the legend has revived,which is about none else than how a bowl of meat jelly, with a frog blinking in it,was served to a guest. The popularity of the festival is marked by the fact thatabout 150-200 thousand of people turn up at various events, including peoplefrom all corners of the world. Whoever has ever paid a visit will surely return.They taste the incredible selection of jelly; dine and drink, go to a ball and par-

ticipate in different outdoor events.Programmes run in at least 3 stages,with bands producing their music oneafter the other. For those that turn uphere on the days of the festival, theirexperience affords clearer evidencethan any statistics. We shall still men-tion a few figures based on recentsurveys. Long is the list of settlementsform which people visited us for a fewpleasant days. We can mentionSopron and Zalaegerszeg out of themore remote Hungarian towns.Foreign visitors include Spanish,English, Polish, Finnish and evenJapanese.

It feels good to say that 80% of re-spondents claimed to be a recurringvisitor, including people from Finlandand Norway. So: time travel, variousprogrammes, ball, food and drink, asmuch as you wish.

The sights capture the imagination of elementary pupils.

The most popular is the heraldic animal of the festival, the frog.

The works of ice sculptors always get great attention.

The jury at work. The greatest concern of the experts is how to select the

best out of the many good ones. Miskolc residents consider their

legendary food unmatched in the country. Fortunately thousands

of people agree: actually everyone that visits here.

ACCORDING TO ANONYMUS

According to the Chronicle of Anonymus, the his-tory of the Castle of Diósgyőr dates back to a lotmore than a thousand years! Árpád donated Geuru,i. e., Győr, as an already existing castle to thefounder of Borsod county. According to historians,people were already dwelling in the area five to sixthousand years ago. It is therefore not known whothe people were that recognised the defensive op-portunity of what later became Castle Hill and built acastle there. According to research, its most glamo -rous era is linked to the reign of King Louise theGreat. He dated letters from here several times – hepreferred hunting here, and in certain years hespent months in Diósgyőr. The waxworks museumof the castle displays a scene which evokes this pe-riod – the king shows up in the company of hissquires and knights. Apart from this, a joust and amedieval fair scene, along with the legend of GyörgyMagyar are also on show embodied by the wax figu -res in the casemates. Central Europe’s most popu-lous historical waxworks museum is open all yearround within the ancient walls. The north-easterntower, which was Louise the Great’s favourite roomwith a fireplace, houses a scene commemoratingthe peace treaty of Turin in 1381. The round bastionhouses an exhibition that presents the developmentof weapons and armoury from the 10th centuryNorman armoury to the Hunyadi-age shiny knight ar-mours in faithful copies made by István Hencz, ar-mour smith. From atop the north-western tower aview of the Bükk Mountain opens before the visitors.In the tower an exhibition shows the history of thecastle, whose speciality is a fully reconstructed 15thcentury glazed tile stove. The cannon on the pen-tagonal Italian bastion is fired on significant occa-sions, and the summer festival season usually starts

in the castle on that note. In 2010 this will happen onthe second Saturday of May, with the already tradi-tional programme called Queens’ Spring, which is atremendous gaiety. This programme, just as the oth-ers, always attracts many people to this picturesquescenery.

STAGE IN THE CASTLE MOT

The ever rising interest demands newer techno-logical development in the castle – the organiserssay. So, connected to the Diósgyőr-Lillafüred project,apart from the reconstruction of the castle, theystrive to expand the castle festivals by setting up a

temporary stage in the castle mot with an auditoriumsuitable for seating about two thousand five hundredvisitors. The mobile stage and auditorium will notonly serve the events fitting into the castle’s architec-ture – for instance, at the time of the traditional his-torical castle festival, which allures with joust shows,fighting games, contemporary musical-dancing pro-ductions and gastronomic gourmet food – but alsothe performances of the castle theatre. Such is, forinstance, the musical dancing production thatExperiDance will perform in the castle. Borsodi Fonó(‘Spinner’), a traditional folk event series is also anunomissible part of the summer season with itsmusic, dance and handicraft show by the Márta

Fügedi Folk Art Association, ending in the Game andWine Days on the second Saturday of September.The event predominantly based on a gastronomycompetition is a pleasant entertainment for not onlyprofessional chefs but also housewives and friendly

companies grabbing the wooden spoon for fun. If youonly long for some transient amusement in theCastle of Diósgyőr, participate in an interactive minicastle tour, or taste the atmosphere emanated by thecentury-old walls and adore the view of the Bükk.

Although the Castle of Diósgyőr did not play aremarkable part in history, since it was not ragedby the Turks, its walls and bastions were not ex-ploded, it can serve as a faithful stage for swords-men and riders that occupy it in summer. Thedressed-up youth present their skills in archeryand spear throwing, and even how the prettyknights courted the ladies in waiting in royalcourts.

The ox roasted in the castle mot and othertasty bits are great for evoking the taste of thedays of yore.

This is not to say that children should remem-ber a visit to the castle as a school lesson or as aschool trip. At the end of the active and nice dayno one will stand in the gate of the castle to testwhat they have seen.

All we mean to say is that under the bastion ofthe castle of Diósgyőr you can learn and havefun at the same time. And this does not onlyapply to children, but also those that wish to im-

merse into the bygone centuries of Hungarianhistory. This is the explanation for the growing

popularity of castle games among tourists aswell.

The legends of MiskolcIf I guide a visitor from afar in

Lillafüred, I never fail to show theMiller’s Cliff overhanging the road.I also tell them that from the top –where now the cross stands – anunhappy young couple, torn awayfrom each other by parental tyran-ny, thrust themselves to the deep.Their memory has been preservedby a beautiful Miskolc legend.

Some even shed tears over thesad story, but it is difficult to takedelight in the beauty of thescenery through a veil of tears.Therefore, I also tend to mentionthat the miraculous car was takingthe happy couple in the film„Miraculous Car” on this road toLillafüred and towards happiness.Meanwhile the evergreen songwas on „In a miraculous car, alongsilver forests / We are soaring inthe wonderful car of tales.”

Piroska Csorba and VilmosFedor also belong to those – asthe lovers of Miskolc – that evokeand tell the legends of the city withpleasure. However, they have donemore than that: they collected andwrote 64 past-evoking intriguingstories, which were then publishedin a book on 350 pages.

The foreword of the volumewas written by Péter Müller, thepopular writer. I quote his words:

„Nowadays, in the era of soberscience, ‘realist’ art and fact-find-ing literature, we do not know that„it is only with the heart that onecan see rightly”.

Szendrei Wine CellarThe Hotel Aranykorona on Miskolc-Kisavasoffers three packages within the „the guest ofthe year” promotion. The owner, Mihály Szendrei,recommends his wine cellar:

Out of the major sights of Miskolc one is the hun-dreds of cellars on Avas in the middle of the city.However, out of numerous big sized cellars – and itis no exaggeration – ours, the Szendrei Wine Cellar,is the biggest. The members of our family have beendealing with catering, viticulture and wine making fordecades, culminating in the awards won in wine con-tests as well as in the traditional wine cellar and win-ery, which are open to visitors in our tourism serviceentitled „Walking Cellar”.This is the only Avas Cellar where visitors can tastewines of Tokaj from oak barrels along with high-standard catering. The hotel is a starting point of tourist trails en-compassing the mountain. It offers accommodationfor 400 people but is also suitable for organisingconferences.

Staying guests predominantly praise its magnificentlocation and the high-standard services. The specialstained glass windows of the Matthias Room depictthe views of significant Hungarian cities, disannexedfrom the country after the Peace Treaty of Trianon.

Among Hungarian films there are a few that wereset in and around the Palace Hotel. Of these the

most famous one is perhaps the black and whitefilm entitled Dream Car, the story of which is largelyset in this place, and of course Zoltán Huszárik’sunforgettable Sindbad film in which the legendaryactor Zoltán Latinovits is skating with his sweethearton the ice of Lake Hámori.

If you walk in the hanging garden surrounding thebuilding, you can take delight in the view of thecountry’s biggest waterfall, or can lay a flower on thestatue of a great Hungarian poet, Attila József. Thisscenery and the experiences obtained in this place

inspired him to write the poem entitled Ode, which isone of the most treasured pieces of Hungarian lovepoetry. You may want to ponder upon which nearbyrock wall the poet wrote the poem’s opening lineson: „I’m sitting here on a glittering wall of rocks…”(Transl. Thomas Kabdebo).

After exploring the immediate vicinity, it is nice tohave an excellent lunch (the kitchen of the Palacehas always been famous), while after a short breakyou can set out to explore the Bükk.

Many guests ask where the musical name of thisgorgeous landscape originates from. The origin ofthe name dates back to 1882 when the Palace Hoteldid not exist yet, but in the area holiday homes werealready standing. A government decree about nam-ing the holiday resort Lillafüred after Countess LillaVay, the daughter of the Lord Lieutenant of Borsodcounty, was issued based on a petition of the own-ers. Besides, the lady spent most of her life abroad,but she allegedly took part in the opening ceremonyof the Palace Hotel under disguise.

It is a legendarily beautiful countryside. We recom-mend that you take a boat out on the lake and watchthe hotel bathing in the beams of the setting sun.

Records attest to the fact that already in 1355 there was a royal wildlifepark in the Csanyik Valley. Therefore, our zoo, which has been created bya community effort, is Hungary’s oldest animal-keeping place. It is situatedin a 21 hectare hornbeam and oak forest, which is directly adjacent to theBükk National Park. Visitors get an inkling of the rich flora of the BükkMountains as well.

Currently we present more than 700 specimens of 150 animal species,the representatives of Hungary’s fauna as well as exotic animals: lynxes,panthers, suricatas, ostriches, deer, monkeys, parrots, a bear and a tiger. InHungary it is the only place to see kulans, rhesus monkeys, and thecolobus couple is also a rarity. The domesticated animals are also popular.

In the course of species conservation and the scientific dissemination ofknowledge, the zoo strives to educate and entertain at the same time, en-suring that visitors could make contact with the animals. The Zoo’s motto„closer to animals, closer to nature” is reflected by the new runways with-out rails, the physically close space, the live animal shows and spectacularanimal feedings.

Trout Farm

Visitors cross the threshold of the modest home with great respect for itsowner, whom they consider a polymath, and not without foundation. If you onlyconsider his published works, you can see how multifaceted his interest andscientific research were. Commissioned by the Scientific Society, after thor-ough research, he published his work on Hungary’s Spider Fauna, and later theBook of Fishery in Hungary. Probably his most famous work is entitled BirdsUseful and Birds Harmful. It was he that proposed to celebrate the Day of birdsand trees in Hungary. He was awarded the French Legion of Honour, and inMiskolc the museum and many schools and associations bear his name.

OTTÓ HERMAN, THE GREAT SCIENTIST SPENT A SIGNIFICANT

PART OF HIS LIFE IN LILLAFÜRED WHERE HE BUILT A HOME,CALLED DORMOUSE LODGE, WHICH IS A MUSEUM NOW AND IS

OPEN FOR VISITORS.

You could hardly think of a better programme than visit-ing the Garadna Trout Farm on a sunny summer after-noon, sit down near the babbling brook in the shade underthe trees and eat a freshly roasted Garadna trout. Afterthat a glass of white wine is best to drink, but you shouldonly do that if you arrive by the forest train, for instance,instead of by car. The farm was established by theHungarian Royal Forestry Directorate in 1932, the first di-rector being István Vásárhelyi, Herman Ottó’s colleagueand close friend. The indigenous common trout is onlybred here in bigger numbers within Hungary, maintaining abreeding stock similar to a gene bank. In the clear-waterponds rainbow trout and brook trout are also bred. In win-ter the trout farm is quiet, but at around Christmas whenthe weather is already cold enough, the propagation of fishbegins. The catering outlet of the farm opens on 1 May, of-fering roast fish until September 30.

Those setting out on a hiking tour, long for thepeace and quiet of the forest, but it would be a mis-take to believe that they also long for being alone.Hiking is also fun with family and friends. Althoughit is not proper to talk too loud or carouse in thetemple of trees but it is not forbidden to talk. Indeed,if in a team that flocks together there are a coupleof people of many tunes, then surely a rhythmicalmarching song can even cause fatigue to go awayfrom legs. To sit by campfire, frying bacon is funonly when done in a company.

There are friendly companies that have beensticking together for years and set out to hear birdssinging or deer belling or gather mushrooms in au-tumn. You can also familiarise yourself with theunique industrial heritage and the assets of its natu -ral environment by sitting on the saddle of a bike.

If you want to have a company while cycling, youcan join a sightseeing bike tour organised by theHungarian Bikers’ Club and the Green LiaisonAssociation in the season. For the popular eventseries the organisers occasionally invite famous

Trails encompass the vicinity of Miskolc and theBükk Mountain, and thus individual hiking is alsoplausible. Apart from the righteously famous naturalassets of the Bükk, you can take a hike to suchless-known but protected and locally significant natu-ral assets as the Kisköves in Tapolca, the KőszálSlope in the Mexikó Valley or the Arboretum ofAvas. The forest railway is especially popular with fami-lies with small children. Hungary’s longest forest

railway meanders in the Bükk between Miskolcand Garadna – touching upon Lillafüred. In sum-mer, the open cars offer an unforgettable view to

passengers. From spring to autumn it makes

excursions more com-fortable, while at thebeginning of winter thesmall train pulling inLillafüred serves asSanta’s Train.

Along the trailsthere are lots of sights.It is worth visiting theiron-smelting furnace,the so-called „Massa,”

at Garadna, which isan eternal symbol ofthe beginning of ironmaking in Diósgyőr.Nowadays rarely cana tourist bump intolime-burners andcharcoal-burners, asthese trades arenearly extinct.

An interestingsight is offered by the caves of Lillafüred as well:Anna Cave, Szeleta Cave and Szent István Cave.The latter is also used for curative purposes due toits special climate.

Here are two destinations for nature lovers: fromLillafüred along the green sign it takes 40 minutesto approach Fehérkő. In 10 minutes walk you reachthe Fehérkő rock lookout point from where you cansee Lillafüred in a depth of 280 m. The rock wall is

a 42 m high vertical wall,which is an officially licensedrock climbing spot. In thesurroundings hikers will findsprings, rest benches, bar-becue spots and variegatedforests, and, in season, lotsof mushrooms and forestfruits.

Bükkszentkereszt is thehighest-situated settlementin the mountain. The herd ofhorses kept in the village isa famous sight. In winter youcan try the sledge and skitracks, and if there is snow,

you can even ride a horse-driven sleigh in the area.The Nagy-sánc, the ruins of a one-time Celticearthwork, is easily approachable fromBükkszentlászló. The lovers of winter sports canenjoy sledging and skiing on the tracks, equippedwith ski lifts, on the top of the Bükk, Bánkút.

We hope visitors from far-away lands will nottake it an offence if we warn them that the flora andfauna of the Bükk are protected under law becausethey are irreplaceable assets. Protected animals in-clude the tiny lizard, just like the bird of prey hover-ing over your heads. You cannot even tear off, trodon snowdrops or collect them into rucksacks galore,not to speak about the rare Turk’s cap lily, pasqueflower, red viper’s bugloss, gasplant (burning bush),or white helleborine. Let Ottó Herman’s warningguide you: „Man is not the lord but part of nature.Everything is beautiful where its habitat is and iscapable of sustaining its own species, its own popu-lation.”

MY MEMORIES OF THE BEAT ERAJune 19 – September 19In the near future a Hungarian Rock Museum will be opened.The plan of the museum was already part of the Europe’s Cultural Capital Proposal,and since the plan has gained shape: this institution, unique in Hungary, will beopened in 2011 in the Fűtőmű Multifunctional Cultural Centre. As a preparation forthe establishment of the rock museum, this significant music and cultural history ini-tiative, a series of concerts and exhibitions will be held in Miskolc in the summer of2010. The exhibition entitled „My memories of the Beat Era” constructs the youth of

what is today the middle generation from the personal memories of musicians andthe audience, overwriting the official history of the Kádár Era. The objects, photos,relics, record covers, film trailers, soundtracks will revive through the stories told bythose remembering: musicians and fans. Thus in the rooms the main part is playedby the storytellers: today’s faces appearing on TV screens, the podium talks andthe occasional playing of music. The memories, however, are complemented by amuseologist-historian work, so that the bygone era should be understood by youngpeople as well. Thus, the exhibition room will be the spot of remembering on theone hand, and a large-scale scenery for the young and retro travel for fathers andsons, on the other hand.
