A proposed roundabout for Cedar Street will be re-examined by district staff in an attempt to improve traffic flow in the area.

Staff has recommended widening the in-tersection to allow more lanes, but coun-cil requested to re-examine a plan for a roundabout which was proposed last year, but was rejected by the previous council.

Whichever option is eventually chosen, it remains likely the expropriation of land on the street will be needed.

Several Mission homeowners voiced concerns regarding the district’s plan to expropriate privately-owned land.

Mayor Randy Hawes told homeowners who came out to Monday’s council meet-ing that the current intersection at Cedar Street and Seventh Avenue is inadequate.

“It is in failure. As it turns out, the design of that was completely inadequate so it’s just not working, So something has to be done,” he said.

process thus far.“I see that some of us make some

sacrifice for the common good, there’s no argument there. I just want to walk away with a fair settle-ment when it’s all done and I want total transparency. I don’t want any more lying to me over this.”

He added that he wants enought compensationto replace his home with something of equal or compa-rable value.

Hawes told him that in an expro-priation, the property in question would be appraised and a settle-ment negotiated.

Dan Bernier, who lives on Cedar Street, four houses up from Seventh Avenue, has similar concerns, but also wanted to know why only one side of the street is being impacted by the expropriation.

Hawes told him the district can’t do anything with the other side of Cedar because the property is owned by BC Hydro.

“So the government is safe from expropriation but not the people that elected them?” asked Bernier.

He added the proposed road im-provements have already affected his life.

“The second you put that propos-

al out, whether it goes through or doesn’t go through… our properties have been devalued.”

He wants to know why he’s still paying full municipal taxes when his property has lost value.

Another homeowner asked what options were available if the city wanted the land. She asked if they could negotiate a deal to give up a smaller portion of property to allow her to keep the house.

Hawes said, when the time comes, they would be open to negotiate a deal that would benefit both sides.

Council will now wait until the roundabout report is presented to them.

The original proposal calls for the widening of Cedar Street to allow for five lanes, two in each direction and one left turn lane, as well as other improvements to help driver visibility.

The cost would be about $3.6 million, money that the district does not currently have in the budget.

It is not yet known if the round-about project would be more or less expensive.

The district plans to apply for federal funding for the road im-provements.-

Tax increase remains at 1.68%After reviewing public input, council moves budget forward

A proposed 1.68 per cent mu-nicipal tax increase will move forward, despite some negative feedback from the public.

Mission council has moved the proposed increase along and will now give the new fi-nancial plan bylaw three read-ings at its Dec. 21 meeting.

The budget should be finalized before the end of December.

The increase equates to an extra $30.82 a year to the aver-age Mission home

The financial plan also calls for a one-per-cent increase to water user rates and a four-per-cent increase to sewer user rates. That equals an additional $19.44 a year to the average homeowner.

A proposed new drainage ser-vice fee will be brought forward to council at a later date.

Mission citizens are not overly supportive of the tax increase, according to responses to a budget questionnaire released by the district.

Of the 81 people who re-sponded, 16 supported the pro-

posed 1.68 per cent municipal tax increase, 18 were passive and 47 opposed the increase.

“There are a lot of comments in here that I would expect,” said Mayor Randy Hawes about the questionnaire. “People don’t want a tax increase. Well no-body wants a tax increase, but they all want services.”

He said the district has to in-vest in its infrastructure.

The 1.68-per-cent tax increase allows the district to increase the transfer to capital reserves by $290,000 to help fund future projects. It allows the district to hire one new RCMP officer and

cover contractual increases.“There are quite a number of

comments saying that people think we shouldn’t be saving money for infrastructure main-tenance etc. That just doesn’t make sense. It’s sort of like buying a new car and never changing the oil.”

Coun. Jim Hinds agreed, not-ing that the district is looking at creating a new sewer line across the Fraser River.

“That would cost millions of dollars to put in. If we didn’t have those reserves that would be a cost that would have to go out to the taxpayers.”

Many students thriving

A survey of Grade 4 students in Mission suggested that 43 per cent of them are thriving.

“These would be kids who are adequately supported in school in community and fam-ily,” explained Katy Brookes a Mission counselor.

Brookes, along with Laura Wilson, early childhood devel-opment committee co-ordi-nator and Kirsten Hargreaves, manager of social develop-ment for the district, pre-sented the findings of the Mid-dle Development Instrument survey to council on Monday.

The survey, which took place last year, is done through UBC’s Human Early Learning Partner-ship and is performed in differ-ent communities each year.

Eighty-seven per cent (343 students) of Mission Grade 4 students completed the sur-vey last year

Along with the 43 per cent who were found to be thriv-

ing, 22 per cent were in the medium category, meaning they are “doing OK but could be doing better” and 35 per cent are in the low category and need more support.

This is the first time Mission has participated in the study and Brookes pointed out that unlike other surveys, the stu-dents filled it out themselves, allowing organizers to have the child’s perspective rather than the parents.

Key results included:88 per cent said their adult

relationships were good, meaning they have people in their life who care about them,

love them and they can go to if they have problem;

89 per cent said they have good peer relationships;

85 per cent reported they have good after school activ-ities.

All of these results are either equal to, or slightly higher than, other participating com-munities.

However, only 65 per cent of students said they had good nutrition and sleep, which is below average.

The presenters said eco-nomics plays a huge part of the nutrition issue adding Mission has a “high percent-age of families that are living with food insecurity.”

The need at breakfast pro-grams in elementary schools is going up each year, rather than down, they said.

As for sleep issues, parents working multiple jobs and a lack of set bedtimes could contribute to the lower num-bers.

But study finds 35% of Grade 4 kids need supportKevin MillsMission Record

We will soon learn what Premier Christy Clark and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have in mind for Canada’s renewed effort to influence climate change.

As they prepare to join the 40,000 peo-ple jetting to Paris for the next big United Nations summit to deal with human im-pact on the world’s weather, here is some context for what is to come in December and beyond.

Foreign Affairs Minister Stéphane Dion served as environment minister under former Liberal prime minister Paul Martin. Then, as Liberal leader, Dion’s proposed “green shift” carbon tax was pivotal only in ending his leadership. With a majority government this time, he promises the en-tire federal cabinet will be involved.

Dion gave a revealing interview to The Globe and Mail last week about his experi-ence in government.

OPINION Published & printed by Black Press Ltd. at 33047 First Avenue, Mission V2V 1G2

Some homeowners in Mission are going to have to give up at least a portion of their property, if not all of it. It’s unpleasant, but it’s also necessary.

Anyone who has driven along the Cedar Connector, especially the intersection of Cedar Street and Seventh Avenue, knows that traffic is not only congested, but dangerous.

The bottleneck has to be ad-dressed. And whether council decid-ed to increase the number of lanes, or create a roundabout to keep traf-fic flowing, the result is going to be the same – the intersection needs to get bigger.

That means expanding onto more property.

Expropriation is a difficult, but needed option that allows a munic-ipality to acquire privately owned land as long as the owners are com-pensated.

And that’s the key. How do you

compensate someone who may have lived in the home for 30 years?

The negotiation process can be tricky. A home’s appraised value may not be adequate to allow the owner to find new, similar accom-modations.

If only a portion of the land is need-ed, the home may remain standing, but much closer to the new roadway.

Residents on Cedar who may be impacted by the project are current-ly in limbo. Council has yet to decide what to do with the intersection, or even how to pay for it. Homeowners can only wait and see if their land is needed.

Until then, they have few options. They can’t sell their homes – who would buy them knowing they could be expropriated?

It’s a tough situation for both sides. The sooner a decision is made, the better for council, homeowners and commuters.

“The old system was to give the file of the environment to the minister of the environment and say, ‘deal with it, be the hero of the environment groups, but don’t bother us because we have jobs to create and an economy to grow’,” Dion said. “That will not work.”

It certainly didn’t work, which is not surprising since Dion is admitting the Liberals considered the environment min-istry a mere public relations tool.

This was the period when Canada signed on to the Kyoto Protocol, then pretended to care about it as the United States rejected it in a unanimous vote of Congress.

We now understand more about those environmental groups, most funded by U.S. billionaires to target the Canadian oil and gas industry while the U.S. booms.

Their tactics were on display in the de-feat of the Keystone XL oil pipeline to the U.S., with arguments that even President Barack Obama acknowledged were exag-gerated.

Dion’s ill-fated “green shift” wasn’t just about greenhouse gases. He intended to impose a national carbon tax and use the proceeds to eliminate child poverty.

This concept is back, on a global scale. If you’ve been to the movies lately, you may have seen a slick animated commercial sponsored by the UN, featuring animals running the world from the seats of the General Assembly. “We have a plan,” trum-pets the elegant llama at the podium, not only to fix climate change but to eliminate poverty as well.

One problem with Kyoto was that it left emerging economies like China and India untouched.

And while Canada endures false alle-gations of subsidizing fossil fuels, actual subsidies are huge in petro-states like Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Algeria and Indonesia, where gasoline sells on average at a third of Canadian prices.

China and India’s carbon emissions have

about tripled since the Kyoto public re-lations gesture in 1997. That growth is one reason why Canada’s share of global emissions has now fallen to below two per cent.

Here in B.C., Clark intends to unveil her “Climate 2.0” plan before heading to Paris. We’ll see if it includes another increase in B.C.’s vaunted carbon tax, which now translates to about seven cents on a litre of gasoline.

Even without carbon taxes, about a third of the pump price Canadians pay is fed-eral, provincial and local tax. In Metro Vancouver, it’s closer to 40 per cent. In Venezuela, a big winner in the Keystone XL decision, gas sells for around two cents a litre.

The B.C. government admits its post-car-bon tax reduction in greenhouse gas emis-sions was largely due to the global reces-sion of 2008-09. Now with crude oil at historic low prices, B.C.’s carbon tax is a weak signal lost in the noise of a world-wide glut of oil and gas.

Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

YOUR VIEWS

Sense of optimism faltering

A7Friday, November 20, 2015Mission City Record

Just as many of us were feeling a sense of optimism with a fresh start in Ottawa, it seems that the Harper style of gov-ernance – described by one well-know B.C. journalist as top-down, bullying, my-way-or-the-highway – has been adopted by our local mayor.

Harper, known as a party of one for his style of arbitrary, behind-closed-doors decision-making ap-pears to have been adopted by council in their decisions to fire the Mission Heritage Association (MHA) regarding oversee-ing the operation of Heritage Park, giving a death sentence to the observatory, and mov-ing the animal shelter to Chilliwack.

It seems that de-spite a great many concerned citizens and presentations to council to rethink

these decisions, the “we know best” atti-tude prevails.

In a September issue of the Mission Record, Mayor Hawes said that buildings in Heritage Park would require $575,000 worth of work to bring them up to “standard,” which may or may not be true, and that there was no money in the budget this year to address that.

Assuming that the figures are correct, how is it that there is $2.9 million for an artificial turf field at the Sports Park and $500,000 for a skateboard park, but nothing for Heritage Park, which is used by people of all ages and interests, not just sports?

I had previously been told by Mayor Hawes that the money for the turf was coming out of the Community Works

Gas Tax Revenue Fund.

When asked about the fund at the Nov. 2 council meeting, Mayor Hawes said that Mission received $1.6 million a year from that fund, which is shown on the operat-ing revenue chart pro-vided at the budget

presentation lumped in with user fees and other revenue at 29 per cent.

When asked where the other $1.3 million was coming from, he said that there was an accumulation of $6 million in the fund.

That would leave $4.7 million in that

fund which does not seem to be accounted for.

Or if he meant the entire $2.9 million was coming out of the $6 million, that would still leave $3.1 million in the fund.

Three Mission schools will be able to proceed with rou-tine capital projects, thanks to $973,600 in provincial funding.

These improvements will help provide healthy, safe and mod-

ern learning environ-ments.

The schools are:– Silverdale elemen-

tary, which requires a $210,000 heating sys-tem upgrade. A new do-mestic hot water tank, boiler system, roof top

pumps, and the high- efficiency direct digital control system will be installed.

– Hatzic middle school and Heritage Park middle school need cooling units replaced at a cost of

$433,600. Condensing units will be replaced along with new direct digital controls for im-proved efficiency.

Work is expected to begin this year and fin-ish by spring 2016.

– Hatzic middle school is also planning a $330,000 boiler plan installation. Twenty-four boilers and heat-ing water distribution pumps will be pre-pur-chased in phase one and then installed in phase two. Phase one of this project is ex-pected to begin this year and finish by spring 2016, with phase two slated for early summer of 2016.

The Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce is taking part in Shop the Neighbourhood, a free annual initiative of Yellow Pages created in 2013 to encourage sup-port for small business-es through local shop-ping.

Shop the Neighbour-hood takes place on Saturday, Nov. 28, be-tween Black Friday and Cyber Monday, two shopping days notorious for driving dollars online or across the border.

“Small business-es add vitality to our neighbourhoods and main streets and it is essential that we sup-port them. We hope that people will shop locally on Nov. 28 and show their support for their local businesses,” said chamber president Ann Harper.

If you’ve been injured in a car crash and, in short order, ICBC comes through with an offer to settle, don’t be too quick to accept.

Typically, ICBC is not only your insurer but also insures the driv-er who caused your injuries. So naturally ICBC aims to keep set-tlement payments down.

Lawyers for car crash victims report that ICBC often tries to settle personal injury claims by making settlement offers very early on. This may appeal at fi rst blush – you can use the money, and you may feel it lets you put the car crash behind you so you can get on with your life as before.

But in order to settle your claim, you’ll have to sign a release. You may think that it’s just a standard document, and sign on the dot-ted line to get the money. Maybe you won’t even bother to read it – after all it’s just a bunch of legalese, right? But once you sign the release, and whether you read it or not, it usually means no more money. If you later experience health problems stemming from the car crash that weren’t fully apparent when you signed, you’ll have an uphill battle to try and overcome the release.

And in real life, often the full extent of ac-cident injuries cannot be known right away. You need to be patient, to be sure all symp-toms and problems have shown up and have fully resolved (or to determine if some are chronic). And you need solid medical back-up on that before you settle.

There are other reasons for not settling too soon.

It’s not unusual for the initial settlement of-fer to be a single, all-in number that isn’t broken down into what factors ICBC used

to arrive at that fi gure. And if you ask, ICBC may or may not be prepared to explain or

give a break-down.

But it’s critical that you under-stand what your claim is worth – what factors a court would take into account when assessing “damages” (proper compensa-tion) and what’s a fair amount for each factor or element of compensation.

It’s best if you talk to an expe-rienced personal injury lawyer

as early as possible post- accident. Your lawyer is only on one side – yours. He or she can help you with your ICBC claims reporting (which you must make soon af-ter the crash), alert you to potential traps and pitfalls there, make you aware of time lines and time limits for your claim, arrange appropriate medical help and evaluations, and negotiate a fair settlement or fi ght your case in court.

Here’s just one recent example of how tricky reporting can be – the accident vic-tim walked to an ICBC offi ce to report his injuries, only to get video-taped on the spot and later without knowing it. Months afterwards, his initially-approved compen-sation claim was denied altogether, but the video-tape was withheld by ICBC, making it hard for his lawyers to try and settle his claim (not knowing what was on the tape).

Brian Antonson of Mission has collaborated on a new book that looks at the history of Canada’s railroads.

Mission resident Brian Antonson has collaborated on a new book that looks at the history of Canada’s

railroads.Whistle Posts West:

Railway Tales from British Columbia, Alberta, and Yukon was written by Antonson along with Mary Trainer and Rick Antonson. The work showcases tantalizing tales from 150 years of Canada’s railroading.

In 2007 the trio wrote Slumach’s Gold: In Search of a Legend.

It became a Canadian best-sell-er, and the legend it-self was made into a successful six-part TV show called Curse of the Frozen Gold, which aired on the History Channel in fall 2015 and on Animal Planet in 2016.

Like Slumach’s Gold, Whistle Posts West captures the imagi-nation with engaging storytelling, fascinat-ing photos, and cap-tivating bits of infor-mation about Canada’s rich railroad heritage that most people don’t know.

The book is available at local bookstores and online.

BELIEVE IN FREEDOMThere is a long-standing debate among philosophers concerning the nature of freedom. The positions on this issue range from those who claim we are nothing more than machines (and thus freedom is merely an illusion), to those who claim that our actions are completely undetermined by nature or nurture, and thus that we are radically free. As usual in philosophicall debates, the truth most probably lies somewhere in the middle. Our behavior is determined to some degree by our inherited constitution and by our upbringing, and yet in most circumstances, those factors don’t compel us to act in any particular way. As humans we can choose not to do the habitual or expected thing, however difficult this may be. And, we actually “prove” our freedom most when we resist the inclination to do wrong and force ourselves instead to do what is right. While the greatest hindrance to our freedom is the belief that we are just cogs in a wheel whose movements are determined by forces beyond our control, perhaps the greatest boon to our freedom is the belief that we are indeed free, and the resolution to always make good use of it. Therefore, we should believe that we are free, and we will be.

Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing,

but the flesh is weak. - R.S.V. Matthew 26:41

Mission Senior Secondary Theatre’s fall production of Arthur Miller’s alle-gorical play The Crucible hits the stage in the first week of December for a three-night run – Dec. 3-5.

All shows take place at 7 p.m. in the school’s studio theatre at the northwest end of the school. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and tickets sell for $5.

The Crucible, set during the Salem witch trials in Massachusetts, grapples with the issues of systemic hypocrisy, false accusation, and the sublimation of minorities within society.

This fiery production promises to thrill and give audiences pause “to con-sider the impact our actions have on the lives of others.”

Mission City Tropics midget hockey squad outlasted 20 teams to win the gold medal at the Cloverdale Midget Memorial Tournament. SUBMITTED PHOTO

The Mission City Tropics midget hockey team won the gold medal at the 20-team, five-day Cloverdale Midget Memorial Tournament.

The Tropics went 3-1 in their pool before meeting the equally impressive 3-1 hometown ri-vals the Mission Mighty Ducks in the quarter finals.

The Tropics earned a 4-0 vic-tory and headed on to play an-other local rival, Abbotsford C6,

in the semi-finals.It was a close contest but

Mission prevailed 4-3 in over-time to earn a berth in the championship final against tournament host the Cloverdale C3 squad.

Mission fell behind 3-1 in the first period before clawing their way back to a 3-3 tie on a three-goal performance by Brayden Hertslet.

The squads headed to over-

time, but the extra frame solved nothing. The evenly matched squads had to settle the final with a shootout.

Spenser Marshall and McKenzie “Big Mac” Hollingshead scored to give Mission the win and the gold medal.

Coach Daniel Meier said solid efforts in goal by both Hayden Meier and Kyle Sunder helped contribute to Mission’s success.

The Mission Christmas Bureau officially opened its doors on Tuesday morning. It is located at the Junction Mall. Guests and dignitaries attended the opening event. Organizers expect to create more than 700 hampers to give out this year. KEVIN MILLS PHOTO

Campaign kicks offKevin MillsMission Record

Last year, thanks to the generous donations from local residents and businesses, the Mission Christmas Bureau gave out 650 hampers to those who needed a little extra help during the holiday season.

On Tuesday, the Mission Christmas Bureau of-ficially kicked off its 2015 campaign by opening the doors of its new location at the Junction Mall.

As in the past, the need for help appears to be growing.

“We’re expecting to give out about 700 ham-pers, maybe more,” said Phil Hope, co-ordinator of the bureau.

Hope has been working with the Christmas Bureau for the past 17 years.

“Every year we acquire more donations. It’s an amazing community. I think the Mission com-munity is more generous in many ways than other communities.”

Donations of non-perishable food, new toys and gift items, as well as money, can be dropped off at the bureau as well as the Mission Community Services Society on 2nd Avenue, the Food Centre on Logan Avenue, the Mission Record on 1st Avenue or Firehall Number 1 on 7th Avenue. Free money available for children’s educationUnited Way Fraser

Valley has partnered with SmartSAVER and School District #75 to encourage parents to

apply for $500 feder-al government grants to start a Registered Education Savings Program (RESP) for

each of their children. Each following year,

for a maximum of 15 years, the child’s RESP will be credited with

another $100. This ed-ucation grant is cur-rently based on a fam-ily’s income threshold of $44,701.

Federal contributions are retroactive for all eligible years. While voluntary contribu-tions by the family are

encouraged, they are not required.

RESPs are not limited to university or college. RESPs can be used for

building trades ap-prenticeships, hair-dressing school or any approved post-second-ary course.

Also, for children six to nine years old, the provincial govern-ment will contribute $1,200 to every child’s RESP.

In order to receive these funds, the child must have a social in-surance number and have an RESP. Parents are being urged to apply immediately, even if their child is as old as 13.

“At United Way, we think this is a fan-tastic poverty reduc-tion plan,” said Wayne Green, United Way Fraser Valley execu-tive director.

“It will encourage young people to fur-ther their education, hopefully securing better paid employ-ment.”

Currently, only 29 per cent of eligible parents in Mission have ap-plied for these funds.

“If that number could be doubled, between $1.4 mil-lion and $2.7 mil-lion would be added to Mission children’s RESPs,” said Green.

“Parents can sign up online at www.startmyRESP.ca/uwfv or go to their regular financial institution. We recommend that parents confirm that there is no set-up fee, no annual fee and no compulsory contribu-tions required.”

“We are very excit-ed to share this op-portunity for parents who are saving for post-secondary for their children,” said Bill Fletcher, Mission School District 75 su-perintendent.

“Currently, many par-ents are not taking ad-vantage of the financial supports available to their children as they plan their post-second-ary career paths. This is great news for Mission students.”

As a further incen-tive, SmartSAVER, during the months of November and December, will be having a weekly draw for $1,000 for those signing up online.

For more informa-tion, visit www.uwfv.bc.ca.

Many Mission parents don’t realize that $500 federal government grants are available to start an RESP

Question of the WeekMuch is made of the impact of distracted driving on the rate of collisions; do you think the problem is as bad as it is portrayed?

Safety Tip:As road conditions become more challenging, it is even

more important to stay focused behind the wheel. If you need to make a call or send a text, pull over somewhere safe or use a highway rest stop to take a break.

OF THE WEEK!

?QUESTION

GLC is at home on any terrain

‘‘Most of those purchased will become city dwellers, destined to hunt in shopping malls, but the drive proved the GLC is more than capable in the wild.’’Keith Morgan

Alsace, France: The route taken for the launch of the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC SUV was cruel and unusual punishment for some of us.The navigation system guided us through a spectacular drive of more than 500 kilome-tres, which started and concluded in Basel, the Swiss city straddling the Swiss, French and German borders. First, we motored to Strasbourg, the cap-ital of Alsace, and then returned the next day via the Vosges Mountains and the Munster Valley.Cruel? – Well, for the oenophiles among the participating media group having to pass without tasting at the many histor-ic Alsace vineyards along the way made one weep. It was just as bad for the beer-swillers who whiffed the smell of hops as they dreamed about sinking a chilled Kronenbourg. Those, for whom food excites, had their taste buds tickled. They wolfed down amazing soft cheeses and cold cuts at the roadside. A curious donkey and a family of storks observed our feeding frenzy from a nest on high. The mental torture was eased by an

extremely pleasurable drive in this premium mid-range, second genera-tion SUV from Mercedes-Benz, which

replaces the GLK moniker with GLC reflecting its mechanical similarities to the C-Class sedan.I won’t wax lyrical about the shape and looks, the pictures here tell that story. It’s a little longer and wider, meaning those aboard get more space in which to lounge and enjoy the luxury this top German brand typically offers. And, of course, more space for groceries and golf clubs.A tablet-like 7-inch screen sits above three large air vents, mounted at the top of the centre stack, which features a well-placed controls touch pad in the lower console.

Back to the drive. Firstly, the test cars were pre-production Euro-spec 250s but we did get to take to the winding, often mountainous roads in a version that will more closely resemble the Canadian 300 4Matic. The same 2.0 turbo-four gas engine we get, though light of around 33 horses, powered it.The GLK-spec 3.5-litre V6 is gone but

worry not, if I might be crude, the four banger, coupled with the new 9G-tronic transmission, is more than adequate on the freeway – zero to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds – and up those hills. And it was quiet in that cabin. Incidentally, the GLC will use four-cyl-inder power in all versions – gas, diesel and plug-in gas/electric hybrid. Economy ratings are expected to be in the low 8s L/100kms in the city, low 6s on the highway. Dynamic Select is standard fare, allow-ing the driver to switch between Eco, Comfort, Sport and Sport+ modes. The tester was also equipped with the op-tional Air Body Control, which improves on its predecessor’s Airmatic system ability to smooth out the ride. Mercedes boasts that the GLC is at home on any terrain. Most of those purchased will become city dwellers, destined to hunt in shopping malls, but the drive proved the GLC is more than capable in the wild.Sadly, the Off-Road Engineering pack-age will not be offered in Canada. An off-road course included a 38-degree incline, which my drive partner Regina Chan expertly scaled, tilted about 25 degrees at one point! The standard safety package is ex-tensive and notably includes Collision Prevention Assist, which warns of an imminent crash and helps to apply the brakes, and the self-explanatory Passive

Blind Spot Assist.I’m a sucker for M-B’s Intelligent Drive concept. The various systems take data from the various sensors to boost comfort and safety. Systems that think and act somewhat quicker than your average driver! The first Canadian models will be gas-powered, a turbo-diesel comes in the 2017 model year and a plug-in hybrid is scheduled for 2018. A Coupe version is on the way but no date yet.The base sticker price is $44,950 but take it up to the premium package, with COMAND navigation and a superb panoramic roof, and you are nudging 50 grand. Load in those extra tricky active safety technologies and you soon hit the mid-50s.

SCHMIDTSelma

On November 15, 2015, our loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Selma Schmidt was called home to her Lord and Saviour and is now singing with the angels. Selma was born December 29, 1919, in Borden, Saskatche-wan, to Gerhard and Maria Derksen, the only daughter among four boys. She moved to Yarrow with her parents in 1944. Mom married our father, Adolf, in 1949 and together

they raised seven children on several farms in Arnold. She and Dad retired to Clearbrook in 1974 and became faithful members of Bakerview MB Church. Service to her Lord was key to her life. She and Dad served as custodians of both the Arnold and Bakerview churches for many years. She also spent many years volunteering with MCC and Helping Hands, making countless blankets for shipment overseas. She also enjoyed singing, travel-ling and family dinners with her children and grandchildren. Selma was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Adolf (1990), her brothers Ernest, Henry and Otto and her son Walter (2012). She is survived by her brother, Reuben (Elizabeth) of Saskatoon; her children David (Diane) of Chilliwack, Linda of Kelowna, Albert (Susan) of Salmon Arm, John (Ruth) of Abbots-ford, Esther (Jack) Hoekstra of Lumby and Anita (Johnny) Szabo of Abbotsford; daughter-in-law Kathy of Georgetown, ON; 11 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. There will be a public viewing on Sunday, November 22, 2015 from 3:00 - 5:00 pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford. We invite you to join the family for a Memorial Service on Monday, November 23, 2015 at 1:00 pm at Bakerview MB Church, 2285 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford. Reception to follow at the church. In lieu of fl owers, donations may be made to MCC or Helping Hands.

Online condolences to the family may be made at:
