Rivers of Living Water ~ Pastor Eric

“Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, Streams of living water will flow from within him” John 7:38

A few years ago along with three other bicyclists we rode a short 4 day trip from the headwaters of the Mississippi at Itasca State Park and finished at Little Falls. One of the things that struck me was how you could literally step across the Mississippi at its beginning because it was just a tiny little stream. The further south you got the larger and swifter the river became. If followed all of the way to New Orleans it becomes much larger

and a tremendous source of commerce and recreation, it is after all called The Mighty Mississippi. In order for that to happen it must stay connected to the source which is just a tiny little stream you can literally cross with a couple of steps.

I don’t want to overdo the river analogy but I have come to believe that every person’s life has an impact on others way beyond what we can see, or you might say “way down stream”. Each life has joys and struggles, they meet obstacles that seem too high to go over and too wide to go around. But staying connected to the River of the Spirit of God means never letting any of those things come between you and God. Because when you are connected to the source He will be with you. As the fall progresses, stay connected to the source, stay connected to God. Remember to worship, pray, serve, give, read your Bible and develop spiritual friendships. Never allow anything to come between you and God. To quote Oswald Chambers, “If you believe in Jesus, you will find that God has nourished in you mighty torrents of blessings for others.” God has blessed us to be off to a great start this Fall at Servant of Christ. See you in worship this Sunday.

Blessings, Pastor Eric

Upcoming Preaching Themes

Sunday, 10/6/19 ~ Following Jesus Text: Mark 1:14-19

Theme: In these days of leadership conferences, leadership books, podcasts and Ted talks on leadership there’s not much talk of being a follower. But following Jesus is different.

Questions to Think About as You Read: Did the disciples have any objections to following Jesus? Why are people sometimes hesitant to follow Jesus? Why do people sometimes pick and choose what parts of Jesus’ teachings

they want to follow?

Sunday, 10/13/19 ~ Jesus and Landscaping Text: Mark 4:1-20

Theme: Jesus tells the parable of the four soils in this chapter which is one of a number of teachings in Mark 3-6. This passage is a reminder to us to seek to be the good soil when it comes to being receptive to the teachings of Christ.

Questions to Think About as You Read: What are the four different kinds of soils? When it comes to the teachings of Jesus which of them are people excited

to be the good soil and which of them are people often like one of the other three soils? What kind of soil are most people when it comes to stewardship? Why?

Sunday, 10/20/19 ~ Minnesota Adult and Teen Challenge The 40-50 voice choir members from Minnesota Adult & Teen Challenge will be leading worship at both services. Be sure to invite your friends and family for an opportunity to hear how God is working in the lives of people as they live the story of the Bible to become like Jesus!

Sunday, 10/27/19 ~ What Jesus Really Said Text: Mark 12:13-17

Theme: Like they did so many times, the religious leaders tried to trap Jesus with questions. This time they try to trap him with a question about paying taxes and he turns the question back on them and they were amazed at him.

Questions to Think About as You Read: Why is the critique that all the church does is ask for money a myth? Why is money such a sensitive issue for some, and for others a joyful

thing? What do you think God wants our relationship to money to be like?

SERVANT OF CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH

2020 ANNUAL STEWARDSHIP DRIVE AND 3-YEAR CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

MAKING GOD’S HOUSE OUR HOME

“As for me and my house, we shall serve the Lord” Joshua 24:15

For 43 years, Servant of Christ has been “making disciples” through our core values of giving, spiritual friendships, prayer, biblical literacy, weekly worship, and serving. Servant of Christ’s annual budget of $970,000 sustains all our worship, education, service and outreach ministries. Gifts for the annual stewardship drive, ensure that we can continue to allow our staff to minister in our community, provide for our physical space, and extend God’s love beyond our congregation. Each year we budget 10% ($97,000) of our operating funds to help organizations inside and outside of the Champlin community. A congregational vote in January approved a capital campaign for building and grounds improvements, missional outreach, and debt reduction of our current mortgage. Gifts will be used to:

1. Care for our church home and grounds

2. Tithe 10% of our capital campaign proceeds for outreach beyond our walls

3. Make early payments to reduce the length of the mortgage, saving interest, and eventually providing more financial resources for mission and ministry through our operational budget.

Key Events

Our campaign is underway! Please contact a Campaign Cabinet member for more information, to schedule a personal visit to learn more, or if you’d like to help with the campaign: General Chairpersons Eric Carlson, Annette Carlson, Lisa Russell, Pam Hayes, Scott Stennes; Resource Coordinator Wendy Johnson, and Pastor Eric.

Is Now the Right Time? ~ Pastor Melissa

“There is a time for everything , and a season for every activity under the heavens…” Ecclesiastes 3:1

Summer is over and we are entering the season of fall. What Spiritual Season are you in right now? Is it time to do some fall cleaning and examine what you really believe? As a Christian Community, Servant of Christ has started the worship series “20/20 Vision: Red Letter Focus” this October. During 2019-2020 we will be reading through the Gospels of Mark and John with a focus on Jesus words. It will be a time of fall cleaning for all of us as we sort through our hearts, minds and actions. We will look at what we think, how our thoughts direct our actions, and who do our actions make us become. Maybe this is a time in your life to join a Bible Study, Prayer Group, Quilting Group or Game Group. Please take the opportunity to grow in Biblical Literacy and make Spiritual Friendships by attending the Bible Study “Unafraid: Living with Courage & Hope in Uncertain Times.” This study will meet Tuesdays at 9:30AM Oct. 22, 29, Nov. 5, 12, 19 or Wednesdays at 6:45PM Oct. 23, 30, Nov. 6, 13, 20. Everyone is invited to stop in at the Deeper Bible Study any Tuesday at 6:45 pm in the fellowship hall. No registration required and no homework! Praying Together meets the second Sunday of every month at 10:45AM in the office conference room. Quilting meets 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month at 10Am. There are many other groups in the newsletter that are meeting this fall. Please contact me if you are interested in joining one of these groups. If one of these groups does not fit your schedule please let me know and we can work on getting another small group started. Now is a good time to get back to an old spiritual practice or start a new spiritual practice. Blessings, Pastor Melissa

Learn about the meaning of baptism and how to arrange for baptism here at Servant of Christ. We invite all ages to be baptized. Classes are held on the first Sunday every other month at noon in the Family Room at the back of the Sanctuary.

Your Giving CHANGES LIVES

Fabian Gaspar Cardenas, is the pastor of St. Augustine Lutheran Church in La Esmeralda, Guatemala. Though the building is new the congregation has worshipped in La Esmeralda for more than 20 years since their return from Mexico, where they spent the worst years of Guatemala’s civil war in refugee camps. Today the Congregation strives to support sustainable livelihoods, health care and education for its community, said Stephen Deal, ELCA regional representative for Central America. Your gifts to Servant of Christ have helped the ELCA invest in the ministry of St. Augustine. Despite challenges to his health and the community, Cardenas has kept his vision fixed on God. For all who visit or pass by St. Augustine, he hopes that “when you look at the church, you remember that God is with you always, and you can do anything with God at your side.” WOW! God is changing lives through generosity!! Keep it up!!

Congregation news

Greetings from the Contemporary Band!

There is no power, no force, no purpose, no being that is able to stand up to the wisdom, the power or the glory of our God.

All things revolve around him ~ Romans 11:36

Our new song for October is called “Unstoppable God”. The lyrics talk about how the Creator of the Universe, the unstoppable God, created all that is seen and unseen. God created you and me. We were created to worship the creator. We worship a God that has no limits!

Our prayer for you is that you can rest in this monumental idea that God is so BIG, so powerful, so loving, so full of grace, so full of mercy that He is unstoppable. He sent His only son to sacrifice His life for ours. Through the love of Jesus Christ, He forgave us, renewed us and called us His own. May you lean into the worship of our unstoppable God. See you on Sunday!

Peace, Cathy Yseth

Lent Speakers for 2020

If you or someone you know has an inspiring testimony they might be open to sharing during our Wednesday night Lent services next Spring please contact Pastor Eric at (763) 427-5070 or [email protected].

SOC Welcomes ELCI

At its August Church Council Meeting, the Servant of Christ Church Council agreed to let Eternal Life Church International (ELCI) meet at SOC on Sunday afternoons. ELCI is a small church comprised of 10-15 Liberians which had been meeting in Roseville. Because most of the members live in the Brooklyn Park and Champlin area, SOC was a natural fit. A facility use agreement has been approved and signed and we look forward to ELCI worshipping at Servant of Christ.

WELCOME Eternal Life Church International

Unstoppable God

Heaven thundered and the world was born Life begins and ends in the dust You formed Faith commanded and the mountains moved

Fear is losing ground, to our hope in You

Unstoppable God, Let Your glory go on and on Impossible things, In Your name, they shall be done

Freedom conquered, All our chains undone

Sin defeated, Jesus has overcome Mercy triumphed, When the third day dawned

Darkness was denied, when the stone was gone

Oh, unstoppable God, Let Your glory go on and on Impossible things, In Your name, they shall be done

Unstoppable God, Let Your glory go on and on Impossible things, In Your name, they shall be done

SOC QUILTING GROUP

The quilting ladies are once again making quilts to be distributed throughout our local community. These quilts are distributed to a variety of places including nursing homes, Hope 4 Youth and where ever there is a need.

We meet in the fellowship hall the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month during the school year. Anyone is welcome to come help. If you can tie a knot..that is all you need to know. Come when you can and leave when you want to – whatever fits your schedule. The time is 9:00 am to roughly 2:30 pm. Lunch is provided along with lots of laughs and good fellowship.

Before the quilts are distributed, they are blessed and displayed at a Sunday morning service.

This blessing will be on Sunday, October 13th.

Thank you all for your donations of sheets, fabric, etc. We appreciate it very much. At this time, we seem to have enough of everything, but do need monetary donations also. We work on a very lean budget and in addition to fabric and sheets we need to purchase batting, thread, etc.

Servant of Christ offers a wonderful meal prepared by volunteers every 4th Sunday of the month. It’s free to anyone that would like to come and have a meal. Did you know over the past 10 years Servant Supper has served meals 120 Sundays. That’s 8000 meals. Over the course of 10 years we have also given away approximately 32,000 rolls of toilet paper and 16,000 other toiletries. We are in need of coordinators to take over Servant Supper and move forward serving 60-80 people each month. Menus and quantities are provided. We are called to be Servants of Christ and this would be a great opportunity for you to serve even in a small capacity. Please consider getting involved, even if it’s coming to serve a meal or clean up. If you have questions regarding how to get involved contact: Liz Doering: [email protected] Diane Engle: [email protected] Carolyn Schlitter: [email protected] or Tammy Lund: [email protected].

Servant House Preschool

It’s October! Leaves are turning color and falling to the ground, soon there will be a distinct “chill” in the air. Our science table will be full of pumpkins, gourds, acorns and Indian corn! All of our friends are welcome to bring signs of fall they find while outside!

We are also going to be talking and learning about spiders, bats and pumpkins! Do you know what is inside a pumpkin? It is a fun question to ask! Some believe that is where you will find a pumpkin pie!

At the end of the month we will be having our Halloween party! All the children will be in their costumes and we will parade around the church for parents and staff to see!

Before snack each day we recite a short prayer together: “We pray for peace, good food and happiness for all the children of the world. Amen.”

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Diane at [email protected].
