Section A

History of Brunei, 1800-1967

Answer Question 1 and one other question from this section.

Read the extracts and then answer the questions which follow.

Sultan Hashim Aqamaddin and the Protectorate Agreements, 1888 and 1905-6

Extract A: lBBB British Brunei Protectorate Treaty

Sultan Hashim Aqamaddin was determined to stop further losses of land. So in1BB7 he appealed to the British for support and in lBBB he signed the ProtectorateAgreement. He expected help from the British if he had problems. Britain's purposesin signing the Treaty were different to Hashim's, being mainly concerned withpreventing other European countries becoming involved in Brunei.

Extract B: 1905-6 Supplementary Agreement

When Britain failed to act after Limbang was seized, Sultan Hashim felt that he hadbeen cheated and Britain was not keeping its promises. Sarawak and the BritishNorth Borneo Company continued to expand at Brunei's expense. All the Sultan'sefforts to get Limbang back failed and further problems arose when there weredisorders among the people of Belait and Tutong.

Then the British government sent J.S. McArthur to investigate the situation andreport. After receiving his report, Sultan Hashim agreed to sign the SupplementaryP rotectorate Agreement.
