Background to the History of Brunei, j 800-18S0

Extract A:Traditional Government and Society

The government and society of Brunei developed over many years. The Sultan wasthe head of the government. There was a traditional pattern of land ownership andrights. ln the government under the Sultan, the Wazirs, who were members of theroyal family, had many important duties. Below them in the social order were theCheterias. The important position of Pengiran Shahbandar was held by one of theCheterias.

lslam was the official reiigion of Brunei and the Sultan was the Head of the lslamicreligion.

Extract B:The Wealth of Brunei

At the beginning of the nineteenth century Brunei still controlled most of the northerncoast of Borneo. Much of the wealth of this empire was the result of trade, bothalong the rivers and with countries overseas. The geographical position and naturalwealth of Brunei were important factors in the profitable trade which took place.
