Five years ago
this summer I
became the execu-
tive director of the
Morristown Jewish
Center Beit Yisrael aka MJCBY. The officers
and the board of directors had the confi-
dence that I could come in and assume the
awesome responsibilities that come with
this position. The staff and members of
MJCBY assisted me in the transition from
“mild-mannered” financial secretary to
hopefully “level-headed” executive director.
Spoiler alert! Before I continue, I am
not going anywhere; this is just an oppor-
tunity for a retrospective.
I must say, in all honesty, in so many
ways this has become the best “job” I have
ever had. I put job in quotes because to
me it’s more a labor of love. I journey down
Sussex Turnpike every day and approach our
green-domed home with a sense of dedi-
cation, as well as anticipation about what
today might offer in terms of surprises
and challenges. My days, as well as many
evenings, are filled with many regular and
necessary tasks, such as paying the bills,
setting up rooms, adjusting schedules and
a myriad of communications.
However, the most important aspect of
my life here at MJCBY is interacting with
you—my congregants, my friends, my fam-
ily. My primary focus is on your needs and
your lives, and through interactions both
joyous, sad and everything in between, my
role at MJCBY is filled with meaning and
accomplishment.
What I do cannot be achieved alone, as
it takes the energies and efforts of a team
to establish order and efficiency and in-
fuse all that we do with an outlook and
attitude of caring. My staff of Mia Mutas-
cio, Tamara Goldberg, Richard Gaskins and
Marco Tello has been with me throughout
these years working together as the MJCBY
“A” team.
Our facility chairs, Rick Barkauskas and
Mark Bender, have been my true partners in
keeping our precious building in good or-
der— a home that you all can be proud of.
During these five years I have had the
privilege of serving under and working
with totally dedicated MJCBY presidents
(Ira Hammer, Rita Gotfried, Eric Weinstock)
and now Robert Berns and Fern Spitzer.
Thanks to all of you for your confidence
in me and your unselfish love for our home
and our family.
A special shout-out goes to the count-
less number of volunteers who have helped
and continue to help us in the office and
in the building. During the past two years
Neil and Dennis Frigand have been monthly
regulars assisting us in sending out scores
of important mailings to you, our family.
Neil and Dennis, you have made your fa-
ther, Herman J. Frigand z’l, proud of you.
Finally, it has been my distinct honor
and privilege to work hand in hand with
our rabbi and my friend, David Nesson.
Though our partnership in serving you, our
family, I have learned a great deal from
you, especially in helping our members in
need and those who have lost loved ones.
Being a team is what allows us all to be
there for whatever you may need (literally,
24/7). I look forward to the coming year
at MCJBY, with many exciting programs
and events beginning this summer for
members of all ages to enjoy, to learn and
to feel connected. Please see the pages of
this summer edition of our newsletter for
more details.
We are here for you, so come on in—
even if it’s just to say, “Hi!!”
Wishing everyone an enjoyable summer, gerry

Message from Morah Fern & Friends:
We’ve been busy sprucing up over the summer. Wait until you see our newly painted rooms, refinished floors and new carpeting. Everything looks fantastic and so clean for the New Year.
Thank you to all those who joined us for Summer Fun. What a great time we had with Morah Sharon, Ivy and Alisha. Special thanks to Judy Josephson for volunteering her time this summer at camp and Rick Barkauskas for his painting expertise. We would also like to thank J&S Carpets for donating the carpet and area rugs.
Please make sure all of your paperwork is returned before the start of the school year. We are very excited about our new ACTIVIT-E website. We will be posting messages, weekly blurbs, school calendar (with updates and changes) and lots more. Please be sure you are registered.
I am looking forward to a wonderful year with our nurturing and creative staff. Morah Susan is serving as mentor teacher this year, exploring her many years of dedicated service and amazing ideas with our entire staff. In addition, please make sure to stop by and say hi to your teachers and our new staff on Friday, September 3 at 9:45-10:30 am at DROP IN DAY.
When we hear the sound of the Shofar, it is exciting! It reminds us of all the amazing things that come with the New Year. I would like to wish you and your families a healthy and sweet year!

Dear Families,
Welcome back to a new school year with the new theme... Or Hadash!
Or Hadash means new light, and it is our goal this year to infuse a special light into our school and program.
First, help me welcome Morah Mimi Zukoff to the position of Assistant Director of our School. Mimi is thoughtful, well-regarded, diligent, compassionate and creative - all traits that will serve her and us well. I am excited to work with her.
As a reminder, please make sure your child has been registered on our new ACTIVIT-E web site, so we can be in contact with you throughout the year. You can select the School Information tab and download a multitude of forms, including the Education Handbook.
I am so looking forward to our Family Fun Day Opening Day of school which will be held at Stonybrook Day Camp in Succasunna. Every child should attend with at least one parent (unenrolled siblings and prospective families are welcome). It will be a wonderful way to meet your teachers, share in learning and keep summer camp going for onemore day.
Shanah Tovah,
Morah Melissa
Meet Mimi ZukoffOur New Assistant Religious School DirectorMimi Zukoff (Assistant Principal and 6th Grade Teacher) has been working at Morristown Jewish Center – Beit Yisrael since September, 1999. After completing Project Moreh (a religious school teacher training program sponsored by Federation), she began as a 4th grade teacher. In subsequent years, Mrs. Zukoff moved up first to 5th grade and then to 6th grade, where she found her niche! She loves teaching 6th grade for many reasons, mainly that the children are mature enough to study complicated and challenging material while still needing to have fun and play a little. In fact, Mrs. Zukoff has a vast collection of various games and approaches, which she employs to make learning fun. Over the past several years, Mrs. Zukoff has worked with Melissa and Rabbi Nesson to strengthen the Pre B’nai Mitzvah component of the 6th grade curriculum, leading the students to examine and embrace the “Mitzvah” in the bar/bat mitzvah. She assists students in finding or designing meaningful Tikkun Olam projects to start training them in the lifelong charge of fixing the world one little bit at a time. This year, Mrs. Zukoff is stepping up to a newly created Assistant Principal position in which she will assist Melissa in numerous areas including curriculum and staff development, class services, and general administration.
Start your engines. We’re racing toward the checkered flag in

Synagogue News
On Friday, June 6, MJCBY experienced
its first “Storahtelling.” Written and
directed by Rabbi Amy Joy Small, with co-
ordination assistance from Ellen Nesson,
this event was part of a growing trend to
recreate the storytelling of Torah that was
formerly common during Second Temple
days. About 2,500 years ago, the Torah
was acted out on market days by a troupe
of actors led by a Maven, the local trans-
lator and storyteller. Our story, presented
just after Shavuot, had Moses confront-
ing his self-doubts at the foot of Mt. Sinai
and being inspired by Jacob to see that he
(Moses) and all the people were holy and
should trust in Hashem. In between seg-
ments, Rabbi Small led interactive sessions
and there were musical interludes. The cast
included Rabbi Small as the Maven, Darcy
Schleifstein as the Narrator, Brad Bolnick
as Moses, Paul Green as Jacob, Barbara Ka-
vadias as Hashem and Beth Hancock as the
Eagle. Special thanks to Moshe Vaknin and
his band for the wonderful music. Everyone
present had a wonderful time and we hope
to be able to produce another Storahtell-
ing event soon.

Mazel tov to our Gidolim and kindergarten
classes upon graduating and “stepping
up” from our school. We wish them only the
best as they continue on their educational jour-
neys. On June 30, our summer camp program
began and our rooms turned into summer play-
grounds. Fun and frolic filled the air as the chil-
dren tossed around beach balls and splashed
wildly in our wading pools. The seven-week
program has different themes, which have al-
ready captured the imaginations of our little
ones. The themes for our summer camp are:
Let’s Go to the Circus, Let’s Go on Safari, Aloha,
Hawaii Here We Come, Digging for Dinosaurs,
Once Upon a Time Nursery Rhymes, Messy Mad-
ness and What’s in the Pond?
The Me and My Shadow program continues
this summer as our littlest friends (birth to 23
months) and their mommies or caregivers meet
with our facilitator (our New 2’s teacher Morah
Randi) to engage in storytelling, art projects,
basic social skills, song and more. The program
is free and open to the community. The class
meets from 10 to 11 am on Mondays: July 7,
July 21, August 4 and August 11.
This summer we will again offer our Bridges
program, where the children come and have
fun playing with their
friends in an informal
school setting. Dates are
Monday through Friday,
August 18 to 22 and
August 25 to 29, from
7:30 am to 6:00 pm. Let
us know if you are in-
terested in signing your
children up to “bridge”
the gap after camp ends

Your Torah Fund contribution strengthens and perpetuates Conservative/Masorti Judaism throughout the world.
Mishpachah—משפחה Family
The mishpachah theme encourages us, as Conservative/Masorti Jews, to recognize the diverse character of our families. It also encourages our communities to be pluralistic, welcoming, and open hearted.
The Jewish family, in all its configurations, is the solid system of roots that supports our Tree of Life. The community lends its strength to each family and, in turn, draws renewed energy, wisdom, and direction from its cherished members. These Jewish family bonds have an immeasurable impact when cultivated in each new generation.
Women’s League for Conservative Judaism’s support of the Torah Fund Campaign helps strengthen Conservative/Masorti Judaism throughout the world, and enhances the Jewish community by recognizing and appreciating our diverse families.
For information, please contact your Sisterhood Torah Fund Chair or Rabbi Lilly Kaufman at [email protected] or (212) 678-8876.
Receive the Torah Fund pin for 5775 as
our gift to you in recognition of your generous support.

Sisterhood has had an educational, fun
and rewarding year. We thank our out-
going Sisterhood board members for their
time and dedication during the past year.
We also welcome our incoming Sisterhood
board members as we look forward to excit-
ing and fresh programming and events. If
you would like to volunteer and have some
time to spare, please contact us. There are
many committees that need some addi-
tional support throughout the year, and we
welcome all help.
Please join us this summer for Women’s
League Convention 2014. This internation-
al event will be taking place at the Hanover
Marriott in Whippany from July 17 to 20.
Also, look for upcoming information about
the MJCBY Summer Mah Jongg tournament
on August 7. More rounds, more prizes and
more fun!
Warmly, Jill and Lynne
