Welcome to the Memphis JCC!Dear JCC Members and Friends,

As Passover is quickly approaching, we are joyful to leave the confines of winter and are consciously contemplating rebirth, renewal and the joys of spring. As we watch trees blossom and begin to smell the flowers, we look anxiously across the horizon toward summer. There is nothing like summer at the MJCC and you can bet on another amazing summer in 2013.

You will want to start getting into that “summer shape” now as there are amazing opportunities in our Plough Wellness Center that you don’t want to miss! Come check out our personal trainers, our fabulous Group X fitness classes, and our full assortment of fabulous equipment. You will surely be a bathing beauty at our phenomenal outdoor waterpark again this summer! Don’t miss out on early bird registration for Day Camp where you can pay last year’s prices if you register for camp before February 24th.

On another note, this is the last MJCC Scene where I will be writing as your President. It has been both my greatest honor and tremendous pleasure to have served our exceptional community in this capacity. I have loved working with our talented and dedicated staff and am grateful for the wealth of knowledge I have attained working with our wonderful Board of Directors and other community agencies. As I step down, I turn the charge over to the generous and capable hands of our new President, Craig Weiss. With Craig, Larry, our energetic, talented new Executive Director as well as our great team of staff and lay leaders the future of the Memphis Jewish Community Center looks bright and exciting, filled with new programs and new energy to meet your needs as Center members.

Stay tuned to future editions of the Scene and watch your email for your monthly Member E-Connection. Come by the Center often and participate in all that interests you and your family. I look forward to seeing you around the Center.

As you join with your families around the Seder table and share the Pesach story with your children, grandchildren, etc., let’s also share the importance of being an active participant in our Center. Our commitment to the Center as well as to our entire Jewish Community is what will ensure that it will both thrive and survive into the next century.

L’Shana Haba’ah B’Yerushalayim, Next year in Jerusalem.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you as your President.

Hope to See You Soon!

Kara BiermanMJCC President

The Nathan and Dorothy Shainberg Art GalleryWelcomes

Noir by Melanie and Bobby Spillman

Opening ReceptionSunday April 7, 2013

2:00-4:00pm Show runs through May 22, 2013

Memphis artists Melanie and Bobby Spillman will exhibit their work of paintings in a show titled “Noir”. The title is a reference to the color black and the illustrative art of visual storytelling. Although Bobby works in oil paint and Melanie concentrates on ink and water based mediums, their work is bound by a passion for the narrative, classic illustration, and the act of painting to tell a story. The works in this show discuss a variety of subjects from editorial, non-fictional, and just downright satirical, and they represent years of dedication to these themes and mediums. The artists are proud to present these bodies of work for viewing to the public for enjoyment and contemplation.

Dallas K. PayneSports & Fitness Intern

The MJCC is excited to introduce our new Sports & Fitness Intern, Dallas K. Payne. Dallas has joined the team to help in the Wellness Center as well as in the athletics department. The Wellness and Athletic Departments have been working with Univer-sity of Memphis interns since the summer of 2010. Interns for these departments must be seeking a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Exercise Science, Health Promotion, Nutrition or Recreation/Physical Education. At the MJCC, these interns are exposed to everything from assisting the instructors of ECC P.E. classes to wellness coaching, with tons of other opportunities in between. After interning at the MJCC, many of the interns have formed relationships with members and other staff that encourage them to continue working at the MJCC long after completing their internship. Dallas is a senior at the University of Memphis in Exercise & Sports Science. He was born in Nashville, TN and grew up playing all kinds of sports. In high school, he played football and baseball and he ran track & field. Dallas loves playing football but admits that he is best at baseball. Dallas explains, “Baseball was my calling, I played left field; it felt natural and I was good at it.” He currently plays golf, takes bass guitar lessons and loves learning something new every day. He also loves playing in baseball and softball leagues with friends. “I’ve already met a lot of interesting people and everyone here at the MJCC has been so friendly,” explains Dallas. He is excited to get hands on experience that he cannot get in a classroom and to learn from the highly trained professionals working in the athletics and wellness departments here at the MJCC. Dallas is not exactly sure what he wants to do when he graduates but he is planning to join the National Guard following graduation. The MJCC welcomes Dallas and hopes all the members will introduce themselves to him when they see him.
