In his Apostolic Letter Mane Nobiscum Domine (MND) for the Year of the Eucharist (October 2004-October 2005), Pope John Paul II makes use of the image of the disciples on the way to Emmaus as a fitting guide in living out the mystery of the Eucharist. The disappointed and saddened disciples are accosted by the risen Christ whom they do not recognize. But when He explains to them the Scriptures, they feel their hearts burning within them. When they invite him to stay with them, their eyes are opened and they recognize him at the breaking of the bread. The Pope then reflects: “When minds are enlightened and hearts are enkindled, signs begin to ‘speak’” (MND, 14). This means that if the faithful are prepared by attentive listening to the Word of God at Mass, the Liturgy of the Eucharist becomes alive and meaningful. The second part of the narrative in the Gospel has the same message. This time, the risen Jesus appears to the disciples in the Upper Room, and what he has done to the two disciples, he does again to the group: “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled.’ Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures.” Jesus then sends his disciples to preach repentance and forgiveness in his name to all the nations. They are his witnesses. As the two disciples, upon recognizing the Lord, “set out at once” to inform the others about the risen Christ, so the group are being sent, clothed with power from on high - by the Holy Spirit. Pope John Paul II related the Eucharist with proclamation: “Entering into communion with Christ in the memorial of his Pasch also means sensing the duty to be a missionary of the even made present in that rite” (MND, 24). The dismissal at the end of the Mass, Ite, Missa est (“The Mass is ended, go in peace”), is a charge given to the faithful to work for the spread of the Gospel. The Presence of the Unseen Lord The encounter with His doubting disciples stresses the reality of the resurrection. The Risen Lord was no ghost. He was real. The Jesus of Nazareth who had died on a cross and was buried was really the same Christ who rose from the dead. Our religion is not founded on the imagination of men, but on a person who, as a historical fact, faced and conquered death and rose again. What was the intention of Jesus when He suddenly appeared and disappeared in different places? And where was He at other times when He was not seen? The only answer I can think of is that Jesus tried to make it clear to His disciples that, wherever they may be, He is there; that even when they don’t see Him, He is present. Matthew, the evangelist, ends his Gospel with the very last words of Jesus spoken on earth, “Behold, I am with you always…” He is like the sun on a cloudy day: even though we cannot see the sun because it is covered by clouds, we know the sun is there. That is Good News. Even when we do not see the Lord the way the disciples saw Him, we are assured that He is not ab-sent or far away. He is really the Emmanuel, the “God is with us,” who will never leave us alone in our misery and prob-lems. And He is with us in many ways - of course, first and foremost in the Eucharist, then in the Scriptures. He is present when “two or three are assembled in His name,” and He is present in our poor, sick and marginalized brethren.

All are invited to attend and participate in this year’s annual Diocesan Marian Rosary Festival on May 6th at 2:00 pm here at Emmanu-el Parish as we honor Mary, Mother of the Church.

Pope Francis recently proclaimed that the Church celebrate the Blessed Virgin Mary in her role as “Mother of the Church” every year on the Monday after Pentecost, as a way to foster Marian piety and the maternal sense of the Church. This year, the memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, will be celebrated on May 21st.

This memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, has been added to the General Roman Calendar, the Roman Mis-sal, and the Liturgy of the Hours. The Latin text has been published, and the translations will be prepared by the bishops’ conferences and approved by the congregation. A celebration of a memorial generally means that prayers and readings specific to the day’s memori-al are used in the Mass.

The Marian title of “Mother of the Church,” was given to the Blessed Mother by Bl. Pope Paul VI at the Second Vatican Council. It was also added to the Roman Missal after the Holy Year of Reconciliation in 1975. Subsequently, some countries, dioceses and reli-gious families were granted permission by the Holy See to add this celebration to their particular calendars. With its addition to the General Roman Calendar, it will now be celebrated by the whole Roman Catholic Church.

Highlights of the festival include the public recitation of the mysteries of the Rosary in various languages, a display of the various Imag-es of Our Lady for veneration and devotions, Coronation and Consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Benediction led by Most Rev. Gerald Barbarito and a procession through the beautiful grounds of the parish. These festivities allow participants an opportunity to experience the wide variety of diverse cultures that form the mosaic of the Catholic members of our diocese.

MARIAN ROSARY FESTIVAL

Dear Parishioners and Staff, All good things must come to an end - I have been here enjoying the beauty of a winter in Florida. Now I must return to New Jersey. I'm so very thankful for your acceptance, affirmation of me and my ministry here. I look forward to next winter, providing I'm able to talk and walk. I've felt very much at home here for the past 6 or 7 winters, I'm very impressed by the Christian development of Emmanuel Parish as a loving and accepting Christian Community. You have a lot going for you - keep it up! May God continue to shower many blessings up-on you, your family and the new pastor. Love and prayers, Fr. Jim Burke
