Power factor is the ratio between the KW and the KVA drawn by an electrical load where the KW is

the actual load power and the KVA is the apparent load power.

It is a measure of how effectively the current is being converted into useful work output and more particularly is a good indicator of the effect of the load

current on the efficiency of the supply system.

Why Should I Improve My Power Factor?

1) Lower utility fees by:

(a). Reducing peak KW billing demand:Inductive loads, which require reactive power, caused your low

power factor.  This increase in required reactive power (KVAR) causes an increase in required apparent power (KVA), which is

what the utility is supplying.

So, a facility’s low power factor causes the utility to have to increase its generation and transmission capacity in order to

handle this extra demand.By lowering your power factor, you use less KVAR.  This results

in less KW and less KVA, which equates to a Rand savings from the utility.

3) Increased voltage level in your electrical system and cooler, more efficient motors

As mentioned above, uncorrected power factor causes power system losses in your distribution system. 

As power losses increase, you may experience voltage drops. 

Excessive voltage drops can cause overheating and premature failure of motors and other inductive equipment.

So, by raising your power factor, you will minimize these voltage drops along feeder cables and avoid related problems.  Your

motors will run cooler and be more efficient, with a slight increase in capacity and starting torque.

Harmonics pollution increasingly becomes a dominant power quality problem,mainly due to modern loads. Coping with this issue using capacitor bank hastwo alternatives:De-tuned SystemsIn de-tuned systems, reactors are installed in series with the capacitors andprevent resonance conditions by shifting the capacitor/network resonancefrequency below the first dominant harmonic (usually the 5th). The middle graph on the right shows the capacitor/network amplification factor and the shifting of the resonance frequency from near the 5th harmony to near the 3rd harmony.

Tuned SystemsIf harmonic filtration is needed, on top of resonance prevention, tuned reactors are applied. The capacitor/reactor filter is tuned to absorb particular harmonics and reduce the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). The bottom graph on the right shows harmonic filtration using tuned system: the voltage THD was reduced by more than 70% (8.8% to 2.5%) and the dominant harmonics (5th and 11th) were reduced by 75%.

Spot welding loads fluctuate extremely rapidly and consume large amounts ofreactive power. Due to high current changes caused by the near-instantaneous reactive energy consumption, large voltage drops are produced. These sags reduce weld quality and decrease welding productivity.

When connected directly to the line, large inductive motors consume very high current during the start-up period (six times higher than steady state operation).

This high current consumption can lead to significant voltage drops on both the low and high voltage sides of the transformer, which interfere with other loads, reduce initial

torque and increase start-up time.
