The Legends of Moonie Jarl Artist: Fiona Foley Location: Library, 127-129 Bazaar Street Legends of Moonie Jarl is a selection of creation stories from K`gari or Fraser Island, taught to Butchulla children by their Elders. Written and illustrated by siblings, Wilf Reeves and Olga Miller of Maryborough, this was the first aboriginal authored and illustrated book published in Australia. Ladies of the Exchange Artist: Michael Wortel Location: Behind Telstra Building facing Queens Park The mural celebrates Maryborough’s role as the first regional telephone exchange in Australia. The mural is painted from a 1958 photo - many of the telephonists in the photo attended the opening. St Mary of the Cross Mackillop Mural Artist: Patrick Phillips Location: St Mary’s Church Yard, 271-275 Adelaide St The mural depicts the story of the Mother Mary’s Maryborough ministry and the arrival of the first parish priest – Father Paul Tissot, who built the first Catholic Church in Maryborough. Our Murals to Date The Concept To develop Maryborough as an artistic hub through the development of a multi-year mural project that will complete 40 murals, 3 artistic installations, and 10 sculptures in the city centre which would be a permanent tourist attraction and revitalise the Central Business District.

This mural commemorates events in Vietnam on 18 August 1966, theBattle of Long Tan, where 108 Australian troops held back 2500 Viet Cong.Helicopters transporting Little Pattie and Col Joye were used to dropammunition to the troops during the battle.

The mural pays tribute to the dairy industry in Maryborough. It recallsmemories of days when cows were hand milked and cheese, butter and milkwere produced in the building on which it is painted.

This mural is based on local entrepreneur and polish immigrant LiousEmmanuel Steindl who set up a very profitable brewery in Granville in 1878.In 1879 he advertised he could also make “champagne porter, Bavarian ale,table beer and honey mead”. In 1881 his partnership with produced 120hogsheads of beer per week. (A hogshead of ale is 250 L of old beer/alegallons).

Local Aviator Samuel William Hecker was a foundation member andpresident of our local Aero Club. His historic 1928 Gipsy Moth was the firstaircraft to fly under the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Sam was an associate ofCharles Kingsford Smith who gave public joy flights in his famous SouthernCross from the Hecker property in New South Wales. Sam was a flyingofficer and aeronautics instructor in the RAAF.

Queensland was the place for goats in the early 1900s. They were used in races, for food and for skin.The Goat Race Mural is a cartoon style representation of a major Goat Race that was conducted at theShamrock Hotel in 1900. It was estimated that between 500 – 600 locals gathered to watch thespectacle.
