A powerful message in a provocative format!Everyone knows that boys don’t play kitchens - that would just be silly!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

MARIE SABINE ROGER has enjoyed making up words since she was four years old. With over seventy books published, it’s a pleasure she continues to enjoy every day. The wonderful film, My Afternoons with Margueritte staring Gerard Depardieu is based on her adult novel, La Tete en Friche.

The prescriptive tone of a text which would limit children toplay based on gender stereotypes is challenged by the cleverjuxtaposition of stunning photos which undermine the dis-missive tone each time. Here the photo of the chef counters theargument that little boys shouldn’t play in the play-kitchen morepowerfully than any words - so there’s no need for explanations!

Play for children is a rehersal and exploration of real life - solimiting their play limits what they can imagine is possible.

Children understand this and these pho-tos will encourage interesting discusionsabout what boys and girls, men andwomen can do and be. The simple, positive message is that if wewant children to grow into well-roundedadults – who can be both strong and emotional, clever and caring, we need toencourage them to play at those roles andnot limit their imaginations or aspirations.

But open the flaps and the pictures tell a different story!Inside we see grown men dancing, cooking, skipping, feeding a baby; and women who drive cars and build boats and play sports...

ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR

ANNE SOL was born in Colombes in France. She spentthree teenage years in Ireland, then went to Paris to carrystudy photography at l'école des Gobelins, Paris, France. She lives and works in Montreal, Quebec as a photographerand illustrator and has illustrated three children’s books.

About Haywired:Haywired is a "Steampunk! adventure that!s packed with murderous inventions, two desperate runaways and one mad dad. Themes of science Vs superstition run throughout the story.
