the [local Internet broadcast leader] is gearing up for its 10th season. No small task, considering the hold traditional media has had in convincing the public they’re the only game in town. The Internet will no longer be looked upon as a passing phase - digital is here to stay.

Worldwide, the broadcasting industry is being turned on its head by the Internet. It’s no different locally, where technological advances — online and other-wise — are taking place at an unprecedented pace and leaving a wave of uncertainty in their wake. But it’s all about opportunity, not catastrophe.

“For advertisers there’s the ability to better target audiences online where they are better defined. Fi-nancial people have a better idea of how their bud-gets are being used. For consumers there’s the abil-ity to watch or listen to programming whenever and wherever they want — they decide, guided in some form by broadcasters. Nothing illustrates this more effectively than the rise of YouTube, now owned by Google.

Take the stats: YouTube receives approximately 2 billion views a day — more than double the prime-time audience of the three major American TV networks combined. Last year more than 13 million hours of video were uploaded to the site, and 35 hours of video are uploaded every minute. Put another way, more video is uploaded to YouTube in 60 days than the three major American networks have created in 60 years.

Winter Survival

When the winter winds start to blow, and we all turn to our cozy homes for protec-tion from the cold, it’s time to get out the “sweaters” for our friends outside as well. Now while we can’t really knit little sweat-ers for the birds and animals outside, we can help them stay warm with food and shelter from the elements.

Winter brings its own set of challenges for survival: insects are harder to find, the ground is frozen so earthworms are not available, fruits and berries on trees have been pretty much cleaned off, snow cov-ers the few seeds that are available, ice storms can cover food sources making it impossible for birds and other wildlife to find food….it’s important to assist them.

Leaving seed heads on flowers (such as sunflowers, coneflower, native as-ters), seeds on wild grasses and weeds (such as chicory, fleabane, foxtail grass, ragweeds, Queen Anne’s lace) and trees (such as Fir, Alders, Birch, Redbud, Tulip tree, Pine, Spruce) are valuable food sources for animals – especially birds. Cold weather requires birds to burn more energy to keep warm. Suet is a high caloric food source that gives birds the energy they need to survive. Make sure your suet cages are secure, or you may see a hungry squirrel not only at the suet feeder, but if it can, it will take the whole

feeder with it! Now I don’t mind the squir-rels sharing, but I draw the line at them taking the whole feeder away!

When the sun goes down and the tempera-tures drop, the fight for life is at its peak. Birds find roosting spots to settle in before the sun goes down. Birds will fluff up their feathers in cold weather to help stay warm. If their under (down) feathers get wet, they will most likely die from exposure to the ele-ments. You can help them out with roost-ing boxes, bird houses, and lots of native trees and bushes for cover. Evergreens are especially good for protection from winter wind, snow and ice. Small animals appreciate brush piles as well as native trees and bushes.

To attract a broader range of birds, try these tasty treats:

You may see other critters enjoying this smorgasbord: squirrels, deer and chip-munks (if they are awake).

Don’t forget to have a water source. Whether you have a bird bath or just a shallow dish on the ground, there are heaters that will keep the water free of ice and available for wildlife.

Learn from wildlife: if a storm is brew-ing, birds and wildlife are often very active gathering food all day long, just in case they can’t get to food for several days or longer. Keep alert, and you may just be your family’s favorite weather person.

Helping our wildlife through the winter not only is fun for family viewing, but you are supporting our ecosystem and ultimately the health of our whole planet!

Follow-ing years of practice in cometological services, Cora Harrell lauched her own business nearly 15 yrs ago. Having acquired an expertise in hair weaving, she expertly serves as a Master Stylist for in-house clients, designers and models. She caters to individuals attending special events, including celebrity photo shoots for CD, maga-zine and book covers, lookbooks and calendars, video and portfolio shoots, movie sets, award, fashion shows, and weddings. Ms. Harrell was inspired by her mother, a salon owner and Mas-ter Stylist, to pursue a career in cosmetology.

Money was found at a gas station crying his eyes out thereupon replacing them with gold coins. These gold coins were sold on EBAY for $1, which funds went directly to the victims of Hurricane Issac after the fact. During Hurricane Issac, I became stronger, faster, and more cunning then Kanye West at a cunning festival.

The Nyack Village Theatre was trans-formed into the forest of evil, this past Hal-loween Season as Selena Marie Grasso Productions in association with The Thursday Project presented Evil Dead the Musical. This outrageous, totally irrever-ent, cult classic musical brought the house down during it’s six performances. The set was amazing, literally coming to “life”. Directed by Robert Cobelli-Zizolfo with musical direction by Mark Zizolfo, the cast, including Charles Edward Roberts, Allison Samuel, Karolin Yahyaoglu, Anrea, Jacob Viens, Kenneth E. Dunne and Dean ten Eiken, helped the audience savor the gory goodness of this musical, getting everyone in the Halloween spirit! An Evil time was had by all!

Thursday Project: From Evil Dead to Godspell

The excitement at Nyack Village Theatre is now building for the upcoming Thursday Project’s production of Godspell. We can-not wait to get this troupe’s interpretation of this 1971 musical, which transformed parables from the Gospels into a series of singable teaching moments. It will be like no other production you have seen I guarantee.

We are planning on making this an annual Halloween celebration.

stores affected by the company’s liquidation sale in 2011. This new release from Dog Ear Publishing tells the story of how employees

dealt with the loss of their jobs and their courage in finding inspiration to

try new things.

Author Rebecca Van Der Jagt, who began work-ing at Borders in June 2011, is pursuing a Master’s degree in Sociology and Education at Columbia Teachers College. She hopes to become both a

writer and an educator.

To round out the year in music, we at New Music Monday are happy to report on the wide range of sonic expression we’ve received. We’ve heard great developments in rock realms, including refinement and newfound confidence on Indie avenues, a tightening of the bolts in punk and heavier genres, and more grand orchestration on the singer-songwriter side of things.

Exciting music has also come to us from other fields of music, which fall under the impossibly broad titles of Jazz and Classical.

So let’s get down to it.

We’ve been grooving with The Jelly Project’s “Ugly Dirty,” with its righteous rock grooves and tightly-executed turnarounds.

Coming to us from Somerville, MA, Klezwoods take us on an intoxicating trip along “The 30th Meridian: From Cairo To St. Petersburg With Love.”

Victor Magnani’s “Late Nighting” creates wide landscapes where impeccable melodies weave through smooth grooves. It is what jazz fu-sion should be, applicable to many settings; augmentative to situations ranging from those where the music is ignored to where it is rumi-nated.

Professor Louie and the Crowmatix educate us with their distilled blend of roots-blues-folk-rock that is at once humorous, insightful, and excit-ing on their 2012 release “Wings on Fire.”

The Cantata for the Children of Terezin, com-posed by Mary Ann Joyce-Walter, shines light on unimaginable and profound suffering, with songs composed of poems written by children incarcerated at the concentration camp at Ter-ezin, in the current Czech Republic.

This is all evidence of not only the eclecticism in the music we broadcast on Rockland World Radio, but is an example of the current state of music. We are just as likely to receive (and play, for that matter) local Nyack funk as we are Australian party rock, as we are Art Music from Kiev. This makes our job thrilling, to have access and be able to share this wonderful music.

Occupying the 6th position in the Chinese Zodi-ac, the Snake symbolizes such character traits as intelligence, gracefulness and materialism. Aurora Australis (the Southern Lights)

Aurora Borealis (the Northern Lights)An aurora (plural: aurorae or auroras; from the Latin word aurora, “dawn”) is a natural light display in the sky particularly in the high latitude (Arctic and Antarctic) regions, caused by the col-lision of energetic charged particles with atoms in the high altitude atmosphere (thermosphere).

Since the dawn of time they have fascinated man-kind, and people even travel thousands of miles just to see the brilliant light shows in the earth’s atmosphere. The auroras, both surrounding the

north magnetic pole (aurora borealis) and south magnetic pole (aurora australis) occur when highly charged electrons from the solar wind inter-act with elements in the earth’s atmosphere. Solar winds stream away from the sun at speeds of about 1 million miles per hour. When they reach the earth, some 40 hours after leaving the sun, they follow the lines of magnetic force generated by the earth’s core and flow through the magneto-sphere, a teardrop-shaped area of highly charged electrical and magnetic fields.

As the electrons enter the earth’s upper atmo-sphere, they will encounter atoms of oxygen and nitrogen at altitudes from 20 to 200 miles above the earth’s surface. The color of the aurora de-pends on which atom is struck, and the altitude of the meeting.

V: Yeah, you go to pledgemusic.com and there are several hundred bands who are sort of op-erating projects in the same fashion. You just go to that particular website and search for an artist, and choose to contribute, or you can also just sign up for updates that sort of thing, but it’s a very interesting platform. It’s the first time we’ve done anything like this and we’ve found it to be highly rewarding way to sort of include people in the process of making a record.

J: Well that’s beautiful. That seems like definitely a new kind of way of not just funding a record, but getting a community involvement

V: Absolutely, it’s more of a collective experi-ence then it is a traditional, you know you make a record, you release it, and you let people know that it’s coming 2, 3 months in advance. This way you’re sort of including people in on the ground level and asking them to help you build all the way up until you put the last shingle on the roof

J: Straight from the horses mouth

V: Exactly, it’s a nice departure. I don’t think we’ll make every record this way, but this one certain-ly felt appropriate. So, that’s what we opted for.

J: Yeah, makes all the sense in the world doing folk songs...

V: Yeah, these songs belong to everybody. They’re from the public domain. They belong to all of us. I thought we should share this whole process.

J: Yeah, that’s great and we’re glad you did.

V: Thank you

J: For sure, and we can’t wait to hear it.

J: ....For Oh WIlly Please you’ve been doing a pledge music, is that a crowd sourcing kinda thing.

V: It’s a crowd sourcing kinda thing, yeah. A glori-fied pre-sale, crowd sourcing experiment for us really, we’ve never done anything like this....But it’s going really well. People have been very sup-portive and responsive, and patient with the whole process.

J: Sure, it’s good to have understanding listeners out there who are patient for some of your great music.

V: It’s always good to have a patient, forgiving audience.

J: For sure. So, how can people contribute to that? That’s an online thing..

Blue Coin is the collaboration of Brian Joyce and Patrick McGrath. Respectively, both artists have been on the NYC scene for more than a decade, but it took until the winter of 2011 for them to start making music together.

After releasing his 2nd solo EP, “When Black Is Blue”, in late 2010, Patrick McGrath opened a series of solo dates for Mike Doughty. After these shows, Patrick began to put a live band to-gether, and contacted ex-Benzos guitarist, Brian Joyce, to see if he would help out. After wrtit-ing “Devil to the Thespian” and “The War” and playing a few gigs, it was obvious that this was more than just a temporary fling. By the end of the summer of 2011, McGrath and Joyce had a solid set of material, and were playing regularly in NYC and the northeast, US.

With an arsenal of songs, the cohorts played their first 2 shows as Blue Coin in October, 2011, for the CMJ Music Marathon in NYC. It was also during the Fall of 2011 that Blue Coin started talking to producer, Allen Farmelo (Cin-ematic Orchestra, Pronto, etc), about recording the band. After assembling a team of friends/musicians to round out the ensemble, Blue Coin went into Mavericks Studio on the lower east

side of Manhattan, in January of 2012, to record their first EP. The four songs on their freshman recording are representative of the ethereal, organic, storytelling of Blue Coin.

With themes of apocalyptic longing, antiquated materialism, and wasted time, the band recorded “the killing spree ep.” Recorded live with the exception of a few overdubs, the songs resonate with edgy emotion and capture the concept of “weather systems,” which was the sonic mantra throughout the recording process. Rather than focusing on individual aspects, like guitar so-los, flashy drums, or extraneous filler, the band sought to create a concise, yet open, listening experience in which the music acts like weather creeping onto a horizon and affecting the land-scape it encounters by manipulating mood with words and sound.

2012 will be a busy year for Blue Coin, as they release “the killing spree ep” on June 23rd, em-bark on a steady touring schedule, and eventu-ally record their followup, sophomore recording. You are cordially invited to take a peek into the carnival mind and curious heart of Blue Coin as they put their unique, signature stamp on the NYC music scene and beyond.
