Glasgow Americana organisers are delighted to announce that the legendary American singer song-writer Chip Taylor will play the festival this year.

Chip Taylor, rated as one of America’s finest singer/songwriters and masterful performers, is gracing this year’s 10th Anniversary Glasgow Americana Festival with a one-off showOne of the pioneers of the pivotal country-rock movement in the 70s and the man who wrote massive 1960s hits, Wild Thing and Angel Of the Morning, he plays the Classic Grand on Friday, October 7.

Chip, who’s visited the city many times in duo format with Carrie Rodriguez, gave up music for full-time professional gambling in 1980 but eventually returned to the business.

His latest album, Little Brothers is due out this

year and follows 2014’s brilliant, The Little Prayers Trilogy, which is a unique collection of new songs over three albums, ranging from stark demo recordings in his garage studio to fully fleshed out roots rock duets with Lucinda Williams.

Over the years, Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin and Dusty Springfield recorded his songs while many critics readily put him in the same star category bracket as Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, Guy Clark and Willie Nelson.

“Chip Taylor has long been a major presence in the music business, whether writing or performing, and to be able to bring him to Glasgow for our 10th Anniversary festival feels just marvellous,” said Kevin Morris, the Glasgow Americana Festival director. “This is a brilliant opportunity to see and hear a true legend.”

GIGnotes: Friday 7 October @ The Classic Grand, Glasgow. Doors 7.30pm, 8pm start. Tickets £15 on 0141 204 5151 or weblink above.

Tennent’s Lager put the call out to Scotland’s unsigned musicians in March, asking them to send in their three best tracks for the chance to play a slot on, the now legendary, T Break Stage at T in the Park this July. Entries came thick and fast, with almost a thousand acts from across the country submitting their music in the hope of landing one of 16 highly coveted slots on the T Break Stage.

Tennent’s Lager have now revealed the 16 successful acts that will take to the stage this year, they are:

Bloodlines / Declan Welsh / Domiciles / Edwin Organ / Foreignfox / Forever / Indigo Velvet / Miracle Glass Company / Mt. Doubt / Redolent / Scholesy / Scope / Sweaty Palms / The Ninth Wave / The Vegan Leather / Tongues

T Break 2016 artist, Declan Welsh said: "T Break is an institution. For artists who've earned their stripes, done their apprenticeship, this is a chance to show Scotland's biggest festival, with the world's best fans, exactly what you're all about. To be given the opportunity to play at the only show in town is just amazing. I'll be working day and night until then to put on an absolute belter of a show for all you beautiful people and can't wait to see you there!"

Tennent’s Lager have been proudly supporting Scotland’s grassroots music scene through T Break for the past 21 years, providing the country’s freshest unsigned talent with the chance to showcase their material to fans, musicians and music industry insiders alike on the biggest platform for unsigned artists at T in the Park – the T Break Stage.

Nicola Cooper, Sponsorship Executive at Tennent’s Lager said: “We are delighted with the line-up for the T Break Stage this year, having attended the judging sessions earlier in the month, I can personally attest to the passion and thought that goes into curating this line up each year. To see such a diverse mix of musical styles and acts from towns and cities all over the country is fantastic. We are hugely proud of T Break’s 21 year history at Tennent’s Lager and I can’t wait to see what this year’s acts bring to the T Break Stage this summer. Congratulations to all 16 acts on this year’s line-up and thank you to everyone who sent in submissions, the calibre of entries was outstanding.”

Throughout T Break’s memorable 20-year history the T Break Stage has

seen a phenomenal amount of talent grace the stage, including bands such as Biffy Clyro, Snow Patrol, Twin Atlantic and The View. Each year the T Break line-up is carefully curated by a panel of 15 of Scotland’s most respected and influential music industry experts including bookers, managers, artists and media.

Dave McGeachan, Senior Promoter at DF Concerts and T Break Judge said: “Every year the T Break line-up reflects what is going on in the Scottish unsigned music scene at the time and I think when fans listen to this year’s line-up they’ll get a real taste of the diversity of music coming out of Scotland at the moment. We have some great rock bands like, Bloodlines and Miracle Glass Company contrasting against electro acts like Edwin Organ and Tongues and at the other end of the spectrum, hip-hop acts such as Scope and Scholesy. It’s fantastic, a great testimony to the variety of brilliant music being created in Scotland at the moment and I can’t wait to see the bands live on the T Break Stage at T in the Park this summer”

Tiree Music Festival 2016 (15-17 July) will be the biggest TMF to date! Over the course of the three days, international and national acts will play to a 2000 strong crowd – over treble the population of the island.

The additional capacity means there are now 250 extra tickets available for the 3 time winner of 'Best Small Festival' in Scotland!

This year’s festival will again feature three stages including the Calmac Live Lounge, set in the heart of the

TMF Community Village – a purpose built arena packed with a host of creative activities and the best of west coast produce from Argyll Foods. As well as the music, there will be special sea-life trips with Basking Shark Scotland and also the first ever TMF ‘flash-mob’ co-ordinated by Eden Court Creative.

“This is the most exciting and eclectic TMF line up to date,” says Artistic Director Daniel Gillespie. “Securing international acts like Levellers, Flook, Sharon Shannon and Nashville singer Jesse Terry alongside the very best Scottish artists like Breabach, Blazin Fiddles and Fergie MacDonald is what makes the journey to TMF so special. And being known as the ‘Hawaii of the North’, it is only right that our first ever flash-mob is Hawaiian themed!”

With four extra sailings from Calmac and three extra scheduled flights from FlyBe, the journey to the ‘Hawaii of the North’ is more accessible than ever before. Vehicle bookings on the ferries are already very busy but please remember that you can hop on as a foot passenger and get the TMF shuttle on arrival to Tiree!

Those who aren’t lucky enough to snap up tickets can soak in the sights and sounds as BBC ALBA will record highlights and performances from the island festival for the second year, providing an insight into the charm and colour that makes the festival and the island so appealing.

Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs, has announced the companies and artists selected for the 8th year of Made in Scotland - a curated showcase of music, theatre and dance performed during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the world’s biggest arts festival.

Made in Scotland is a partnership between the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society, Creative Scotland, the Federation of Scottish Theatre and the Scottish Music Centre. Through the Scottish Government’s Expo Fund, Made in Scotland has received £590,000 to present the showcase with part of the funding designed to enable Scottish companies, ensembles and artists to take up onward international touring opportunities from contacts made during the Festival Fringe.

The programme is testament to the strength of work being created in Scotland with the 2016 showcase representing a strong line-up of companies, ensembles and artists including Barrowland Ballet, Janis Claxton Dance, Kieran Hurley, Puppet State Theatre, Andy Manley, Starcatchers, Moishe’s Bagel, Simon Thacker and Justyna Jablonska, Kai Fischer, Sam Rowe, Graeme Stephen, Cryptic, Adura Onashile, Will Pickvance, Sita Pieraccini, Mairi Campbell, Gary Gardiner and Ian Johnston.

Since its inception in 2009, Made in Scotland has funded 159 companies, ensembles and artists to showcase their work. The onward touring fund has enabled 57 productions to tour across five continents, visiting over 20 countries. Made in Scotland productions have picked up over 60 awards.

Playwrights’ Studio Scotland returns with TalkFest 2016 to explore what stimulates the artists behind this year’s Made in Scotland showcase and the wider Edinburgh Festivals and Fringe. The sessions are led and chaired by some of our leading playwrights and theatre-makers - Kieran Hurley, Rob Drummond, Kai Fischer, Adura Onashile, Clare Duffy, Deb Jones and

Kathy McKean, David Greig and Lewis Hetherington.

Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs said: “Over the past eight years, the Made in Scotland 2016 programme has built a strong track record of showcasing high quality productions which push boundaries, flare imagination and examine the intricacies of real life. The opportunity that the showcase offers is invaluable and continues to create international opportunities for Scottish performers and companies.” She added: “The Scottish Government is proud to support Made in Scotland via the Expo Fund to bring this innovative piece of work to life and to continue raising Scotland’s cultural profile on the international stage.”

Shona McCarthy, Chief Executive, Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society said: “Made in Scotland highlights the work of many talented artists and companies in Scotland today and presenting their work at the 2016 Edinburgh Festival Fringe in the fields of music, dance and theatre; it opens up an array of opportunities both during the Fringe, when thousands of industry professionals and media are in town, and after by way of the onward touring fund. The Fringe is an extraordinary international stage, and for me, as the new Chief Executive of the Fringe Society, it is fantastic that such a platform exists through partnership with Creative Scotland, the Federation of Scottish Theatre and the Scottish Music Centre and support from the Scottish Government’s Expo Fund.”

Gill Maxwell, Executive Director, Scottish Music Centre said: "With our partners the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society, Creative Scotland and the Federation of Scottish Theatre, the Scottish Music Centre is delighted to present six music shows highlighting the quality and diversity of Scotland’s composers, songwriters, musicians and artists. The showcases represent a wide range of music genres, from traditional and acoustic, via fusions of klezmer and gypsy, to electronica and multimedia presentations. We look forward to these artists joining the raft of previous participants who have been enabled to tour their work internationally as a result of Made in Scotland showcasing."

Julie Fowlis and the Hebridean Celtic Festival have grown up together and the internationally-acclaimed singer is an obvious name on the guest list for the event’s 21st birthday celebrations.

The North Uist-raised artist has been a serial visitor to the island festival as both became multi award winners and established in the music industry.

But despite Julie having appeared in many different guises, and in almost all HebCelt’s various venues over the years, she will chalk up a first this year by making her debut on the Islands Stage.

Julie, now universally recognised for singing the theme song to 'Brave', Disney Pixar’s Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA winning animated film, and for performing live to a TV audience of more than 1 billion people at the opening ceremony of the Glasgow XX Commonwealth Games in 2014, has a connection to HebCelt dating back more than 15 years.

She was given one of her first solo singing opportunities as part of Atlantic Movement, a project specially commissioned for the festival and which brought together seven of the finest Celtic singers from Scotland, Ireland, Wales and Cape Breton.

She has also appeared as part of the sextet, Dòchas - winners of the Best Newcomer award at the Scots Trad Music Awards in 2004, where Julie was nominated for Best Gaelic Singer – and with acclaimed film and musical work 'Heisgeir', based on the history, people and landscape of the uninhabited Monach Islands.

Over the years she has performed on the Main Stage and in HebCelt’s smaller venues in rural parts of Lewis and Harris, and this year will be playing two separate shows in different venues.

She will be part of the festival opener ‘Hebridean Women’, a project designed to encourage collaboration and promote the music and song from the area, when she will be joined on stage at An Lanntair arts centre by Cathy Ann MacPhee from Barra, Mary Smith and Isobel Ann Martin, from Lewis, and Kathleen Macinnes, from South Uist.

Two nights later she will be on stage with her band in the main festival arena.

Julie, one of the first inductees to the HebCelt Hall of Fame and an ambassador for the event, said: “Coming from the Outer Hebrides I have always been excited about playing at HebCelt”, she said. “It is a highlight of the year for me and I am particularly looking forward to returning there for the 21st festival.

“It’s one of my favourite events. I have such a soft spot for the festival, it holds special memories for me. HebCelt and I have grown up together and it is where I had some of my earliest opportunities as a solo artist.

“Over the years I’ve played most of the festival venues in a variety of locations, but it will be a first to play the Islands Stage this year which I’m very much looking forward to as it has its own special atmosphere.”

Since those early days, Julie has gathered a huge following around the world and built up a sizeable collection of honours over the years, including the Tartan Clef Award for Music in 2014, and a Best Artist nomination at the Songlines World Music Awards 2015.

She has also turned to handing out prizes, recently co-hosting the Radio 2 Folk Awards at the Royal Albert Hall again with long-time friend Mark Radcliffe.

“It was a great pleasure to be presenting the awards again this year, and it’s always a very special feeling stepping out onto the stage at the Royal Albert Hall. You can almost feel a presence in the building of those artists who has performed there in days gone by. And it’s a joy always to work with Mark Radcliffe.”

Did winning an award change anything for her? “Award ceremonies for music can be strange - they certainly can make a real difference to your profile and career, and in that sense they are important, especially to young and emerging acts.

“But they don’t sit that comfortably with me in some ways - how do you compare musicians or singers of entirely differing styles and traditions? Also voting systems are often flawed, and you’ll never manage to keep everyone happy.

“However, overall, I do think they are a vital way to showcase traditional and folk music on a big stage, attracting the attention of many decision makers and funders who otherwise wouldn’t be aware of this scene at all.”

Her busy schedule shows no signs of slowing up, having recently returned from gigs in Germany and starred at the Oban Live music event, followed by four concerts during the Orkney Folk Festival, before heading to shows in Cardiff ahead of her HebCelt appearances.

She also appears on the debut album by Starless, released on 27 May and featuring Paul McGeechan (Love and Money), Chris Thomson (The Bathers), Paul Buchanan (The Blue Nile) , Karen Matheson (Capercaillie) and recorded with

the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra.

In between she is a much sought after presenter on radio and television, on BBC ALBA, BBC Radio 2, and 4, BBC Radio Scotland, BBC Scotland TV, SKY ARTS HD and TG4 in Ireland.

It requires a lot of planning with husband and fellow musician husband Éamon Doorley with whom she has two children: “It can be difficult but lots of planning, a good online diary system and teamwork between husband and wife and two great kids make it possible.

“I am happy with the mix at the moment - singing one minute, then side-stepping into presenting the next. It keeps me on my toes, that’s for sure!”

The 21st HebCelt will be held from 13-16 July in Stornoway. Runrig will head a line-up of nearly 50 acts over the four days, including the Red Hot Chilli Pipers, Hayseed Dixie, Astrid, King Creosote and Breabach.

HebCelt has grown from a small event attracting less than 1,000 fans, to an international showpiece for roots, Celtic and traditional music, drawing an audience of around 15,000. It is estimated it has generated more than £20 million for the local economy over two decades.

Piping Live! Glasgow International Piping Festival has announced the competitors for this year’s Pipe Idol tournament. There are 16 exceptional participants from Scotland, Germany, Canada, USA and Australia all vying for the prestigious title.

Pipe Idol has grown to be one of the most

popular events at Piping Live!, held in Glasgow from 8-14 August, and the grand finale on Thursday 11th August has been moved to the Strathclyde Suite at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall to cope with demand. Tickets for Pipe Idol are on sale now from www.pipinglive.co.uk/events/pipe-idol-grand-final

The competition, sponsored by Fred Morrison Reelpipes, sees the best up-and-coming pipers, aged between 15 and 20, compete at four heats throughout the week, before the final four play to a secret panel of judges.

Last year’s crown was taken by 20 year-old Scott Barrie, of the Grade 1 Greater Glasgow Police Scotland Pipe Band. Other notable winners over the last 10 years include Calum Ian Brown, who won in 2014 and Connor Sinclair, who took the title in 2012 when he was only 16 years old.

Roddy MacLeod, Festival Director of Piping Live!, said: “Each year we see the very best young pipers battle it out to be crowned the Pipe Idol winner and this year we’re thrilled to be able to welcome such a mix of international performers. There’s an incredible amount of talent on this line-up, so our judges definitely have their work cut out for them. It will be interesting to see who will walk away with the title at this year’s Piping Live! festival.”

Now in its 13th year, Piping Live! is the biggest festival of its kind in the world. Some of the hottest names in traditional music will perform at the 2016 festival, including RURA, Anxo Lorenzo, Ross Ainslie & Ali Hutton and the world famous Red Hot Chilli Pipers.

Band performances will take place in George Square and on the steps of The Royal Concert Hall. Fan favourites, the Masters Solo and the International Quartets competition, will return to the festival this year, while the Pipers Market will be back in George Square, providing the best fresh and local food and drink from across Scotland.

The weekend will also see the most important piping competition in the world take place in Glasgow for the 30th consecutive year, as The World Pipe Band Championships returns on 12 and 13 August. Each year 8,000 pipers from more than 200 countries travel to Glasgow Green to compete to be named best in the world for piping and this year will see Shotts and Dykehead Caledonia Pipe Band defend their title after becoming the first Scottish band to win the coveted title in more than a decade.

Scotland’s nightclub under the stars returns to Loch Ness on 20 August with an impressive line-up of acts already announced including: DJ and acclaimed producer DUKE DUMONT, German DJ Alexander Ridha, better known by his stage name BOYS NOIZE, Grammy-nominated DJ/producer MARK KNIGHT, Glasgow based OPTIMO and hot new production/DJ duo CAMELPHAT.

Groove Loch Ness has also just announced an increased 2nd stage offering for the second year of ‘Scotland’s Nightclub Under the Stars’.

The line-up for the new tented, and yet to be named arena at Groove has today been unveiled and is set to give festival goers a taste of the freshest and most interesting underground dance music of the moment, with acts including Leon Vynehall, Dan Shake and Moxie.

Headliner Leon Vynehall has fast been moving

up the ranks in the dance scene and recently received the accolade of being asked to produce a BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix. Dan Shake was the first non-Detroit artists to be signed to scene figurehead Moodymann’s prestigious label Mahogani Music, and Moxie is a key female figure in the UK’s burgeoning internet radio scene, hosting a regular slot on London based NTS.

Festival organiser Dougie Brown said “we didn’t want to change much at the festival after the success of last year’s event, but one of the main areas of feedback we received was that a bigger, covered second stage would improve the flow of the festival so we are happy to announce that this will be happening at Groove this summer.”

The Groove team have also launched a competition to name the 2nd stage which can be entered over on the festival’s social media pages. The winner will receive a lifetime pass to Groove Loch Ness for themselves and 1 friend plus transport from anywhere in the UK (transport for this year only).

Also announced for the stage are local Legends State of Grace, who will be performing back-to-back with Let Us Play, Edinburgh based label Craigie Cartel, who along with hosting regular events, recently performed at Groove CairnGorm, the UKs first snowsports festival,

alongside the final act announced, Hector’s House.

Groove Loch Ness is managed by four partners who have a long relationship working in the music industry throughout the Highlands of Scotland. Caroline Campbell (Director Ironworks Venue), Dougie Brown (Belladrum & Ironworks Venue), Sam Barker (Belladrum Festival) and Joe Gibbs (founder of Belladrum Festival & co-founder of Rockness). The Groove events are back to basics dance festivals with a strictly 18 and over policy. The inaugural event in 2015 saw Groove Armada, 2manydjs, Tensnake, Radio 1’s B.Traits and more perform at the event.

Along with Groove Loch Ness the team put together a resort based snowsports festival Groove Cairngorm in March 2016 which featured snowsports in the Cairngorm Mountains during the day and a stellar Apres-ski line-up including Grandmaster Flash, Hot Chip (dj set), DJ Yoda, The Cuban Brothers, The LaFontaines amongst others.

Tickets are on sale now available from 0844 884 2920 or the weblink above.

Scotland’s Biggest Electornic Music Festival Brought To An Unforgettable Close As International Stars Turn Up The Heat In Glasgow

Glasgow : 28-29 May : www.riversidefestivalglasgow.com

MUSIC FESTIVALS - MUSIC FESTIVALS - MUSIC FESTIVALS - MUSIC FESTIVALS

Scotland praised iconic legend Fatboy Slim on the banks of the Rivers Clyde on the closing night of The Electric Frog & Pressure Riverside Festival in style. As the sun turned the Glasgow sky shades of pink, across the festival site Kerri Chandler delivered a set that’s sure to go down in the festival’s history books.

The closing day saw over eight hours of well-crafted DJ sets, a sell out crowd of 6,000 fans and a festival first when a dedicated fan chose the event to propose to his childhood sweetheart onboard the Tall Ship on the banks of the River Clyde.

East Kilbride’s Jonny Welsh (24) asked long-term girlfriend Maxine Allan (25) of ten years to take his hand in marriage as to which she said yes Dixon Avenue Basement Jams played a sublime set of dance floor house and techno tunes in the background.

After a scorching opening day of the fourth-consecutive year for the festival, Glasgow’s The Electric Frog & Pressure brought their epic collaboration to a euphoric close thanks to spine-tingling sets from the likes of Dimitri From Paris and Jackmaster.

One fan from Edinburgh expressed their excitement during the Fatboy Slim headline set as: “special” and “memories with my friends I will never forget.”

Speaking about the event, festival organiser Dave Clarke said: “We were delighted to return for our fourth consecutive year on the grounds of the Riverside Museum and even more so that we could bring such big names to a city music

festival.

This year’s event has been special to us for so many reasons. Not only have SOMA Records kicked off their 25th Anniversary at the Riverside, we’ve seen a line-up unrivalled in Scotland.

“Year on year we have put tireless efforts into improving the event. Behind the scenes, the team working at the festival have worked relentlessly to deliver a premier event that Scotland can be proud of. We would like to thank everyone who attended this weekend’s festival for making it such a memorable

success.”

Saturday saw the likes of Sven Väth, Ben Klock, Rødhåd and Laurent Garnier turn up the heat and Sunday’s edition didn’t disappoint with Julio Bashmore, Joris Voorn and DJ Deeon delighting the crowds. Once again, Heverlee Beer provided a unique environment to enjoy cold refreshments, as DJs played atmospheric tunes with the sun beating bright in the sky. www.riversidefestivalglasgow.com https://twitter.com/electric_frog www.facebook.com/riversidefestivalglasgow

OCTOBER

Glasgow Americana

Glasgow 5-9 October The sparkling Blue Rose Code will do the honours and open the 10th anniversary Glasgow Americana Festival in October. On Wednesday 5 October in St Andrew’s in the Square' Man behind the music, Ross Wilson has rightly won huge praise for live, sell-out performances including joyous sessions for the BBC. www.glasgowamericana.com

Ullapool Guitar Festival Ullapool 7-9 October So why is the UGF so special? Perhaps it’s the mix of music old and new, of electric and acoustic, of steel and nylon, of seasoned performers and those, like the students from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, just starting out on their careers. Perhaps it’s the location on Loch Broom and the drive up through some of Scotland’s most spectacular scenery. Perhaps it’s the informal air of the whole weekend: there’s no “us and them”, no VIP area. Everyone mingles, and you’re likely to find yourself sitting beside a guitar legend in the Festival Club – or even jamming with them on one of the trade stands. www.ullapoolguitarfestival.com
