HebCelt @ 20 Early Birds on sale!

Stornoway : 15-18 July : www.hebceltfest.com

A limited number of early bird tickets are on sale for the award-winning Hebridean Celtic Festival which is gearing up to mark its 20th anniversary in 2015.

The tickets for the internationally acclaimed festival, which was voted Best Event or Festival at the Highlands and Islands Tourism Awards earlier this month, have been available to buy

online at http://www.hebceltfest.com/ since Monday 1 December.

It’s an opportunity for fans to grab a bargain as they are being held at the 2014 prices of £79 for the weekend (£61 for concession and £19 for children under 14) for the main arena events.

The 20th HebCelt, based in Stornoway on Lewis, will be held from 15-18 July 2015.

Musicians from the festival will kick off the 20th anniversary year in style when they will be among Edinburgh’s first foot guests during the capital’s Hogmanay celebrations.

Artists representing HebCelt will perform at a special ceilidh being held as part of a series of free live gigs ‘hidden’ in ten spaces in the Old Town on 1 January.

Next year’s festival aims to build on a successful 2014 event which staged its biggest ever programme of 40 acts, headlined by Big Country, Levellers and Donnie Munro.

A huge influx of music fans from overseas made up the estimated 14,000 strong audience which proved a major economic boost for the islands.

Festival director Caroline Maclennan said: “2014 has been a very rewarding year; the festival was another great success and winning a major award was another massive achievement for the team.

“However, 2015 is a special year for us, and we’re already gearing up to make it the most memorable for our fans yet. “The advance tickets for the 2015 festival will make an ideal Christmas present for our supporters, who can start looking forward to the summer months ahead.”

Head booker Loudon Temple says he is confident they will make a big impact once again with a line-up that genuinely offers something for everyone. They are most excited about being able to bring THE CALIFORNIA FEETWARMERS in for a headline show at The Old Fruitmarket on the opening weekend.

“We saw this outstanding eight-piece at the Folk Alliance International event in Kansas City this year and they will just blow everyone’s socks off. When they set up in the foyer of one of the biggest hotels there to play an impromptu set, the entire place came to a standstill as nobody wanted to miss a single note."

“They are out of this world,” Loudon said.

The band has quite a pedigree on the Lindy Hop revival circuit in America and was recently nominated for a Grammy along with Keb Mo after

he invited them to record on his latest album.

“It will be a party like no other,” says Temple. “There will be a decent bit of space left at the front of the stage for those who want to come along and strut their stuff on the dancefloor. I’m hoping some of the Lindy Hop fans from Glasgow and Edinburgh – and further afield too – come out to take advantage of the chance to add some extra sparkle to the show.”

Although The California Feetwarmers have never travelled over to the UK before, it will be a second visit to Celtic Connections for CAHALEN MORRISION & ELI WEST who have a strong double-header show lined up with B-K stablemates PHARIS & JASON ROMERO from Horsefly, British Columbia.

“This is a dream pairing,” he added, “and is bound to be a very popular event that’s taking place in the Mitchell Theatre.”

Also billed as something special, is the much-anticipated arrival of hot Canadian five-piece, FISH & BIRD, whom many have been waiting to see ever since they released their last album over here two years ago.

When they followed up that album with the latest record earlier in 2014, it won them even more praise, The Herald stating simply: “The bar has been raised!”

They have their own show at the Strathclyde Suite in the Royal Concert Hall on January 24 and should draw a capacity crowd keen to see them pull it off ‘live’.

Already established as a big attraction on their home turf, the band has wowed crowds at huge events such as Vancouver Folk Festival who this year gave them big billing and justified that by stating: “They have evolved into Canada’s most unique folk-rock ensemble.”

Brookfield-Knights say that they are also super-excited to be bringing in Mississippi Delta songbird BRONWYNNE BRENT, tipped by many, including ‘Whispering’ Bob Harris, for great things.

Reviewers have compared her spine-tingling vocal style to Billie Holiday, Peggy Lee and Amy Winehouse. Tracks from her latest album,

With CELTIC CONNECTIONS FESTIVAL just literally weeks away, staff at the BROOKFIELD-KNIGHTS music agency are gearing up for their busiest year ever at the event. Brookfield-Knights is the Scottish operation that has introduced acts such as The Wilders, Meschiya Lake, The Stray Birds, The Wiyos, Cahalen Morrison & Eli West, The Heritage Blues Orchestra, Elephant Revival and Pokey LaFarge in previous years. Famed for bringing in new-to-the-territory performers who make their UK debut at the midwinter jamboree in Glasgow, and then go on to establish themselves as big draws on the UK and Ireland circuit, this time it’s a mixture of new and familiar faces who will be carrying the flag for the Renfrewshire-based tour organisers.

‘Stardust,’ have been featured on radio right across the UK and when the Billboard Folk Chart was published this week, it was sitting pretty near the top alongside all the big hitters.

Playing in trio format (with lead guitar and double bass backing) she will showcase material from the latest CD as well as the previously-released ‘Deep Black Water.’

“We have rarely known such

instant reaction to a new release,” said Dunc Mackinnon, of Brookfield-Knights’ sister operation, Bloodygreatpr.

“It seemed like we sent out promo copies one day and they were being played on radio both in the UK and Ireland the very next day.

“Bob Harris loved the album so much, he played tracks repeatedly on both of his big-audience BBC Radio 2 shows and he has invited Bronwynne

and her sidekicks in to record a studio session for him while they are over here.”

One of the most popular home-based bands that the agency works with is THE MOUNTAIN FIREWORK COMPANY, who got a chance to shine at Celtic Connections last year when they opened for Imelda May at the Old Fruitmarket.

“They created a big impression and got an invitation to return and have a double-header show with THE LOST BROTHERS at Oran Mor,” said Loudon.

“It’s been a big year for the band who went over to The States to play for the first time. They have recently returned from Germany where they were the headline act on an impressive show put together for national radio in Bremen. They played Shetland Folk festival too and it’s looking good for them in 2015 as there’s a brand new album in the pipeline too.”

In general terms, Brookfield-Knights have more tours

planned for 2015 than any previous year and that includes slots at some of the bigger events too.

“Festivals are increasingly keeping an eye on what we are doing,” he added.

“In 2015 we will have acts at Celtic Connections, Cambridge, Shetland and Orkney Folk Festivals, as well as Open House in Belfast, Gate To Southwell in Nottingham, Devizes Street Festival, Swaledale Festival, Summertyne Festival - all as far as the UK is concerned - and we’ll have three acts at Tonder Festival in Denmark and have a presence at Earagail Arts Festival in Co Donegal too.”

In keeping with their practice, they will be introducing several new-to-the-territory acts in 2015 as well, including Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys, Betty & The Boy, The Railsplitters. www.brookfield-knights.com https://twitter.com/BobTheHepCat www.facebook.com/BrookfieldKnights

The Electric Frog & Pressure 'Riverside Festival' Announce Big Names For 2015 Festival

Glasgow : 29-30 May : www.riversidefestivalglasgow.com

Following the huge success of last year’s Electric Frog & Pressure Riverside Festival, leading event organisers in Glasgow - The Electric Frog and Pressure - have joined forces once again announcing the first batch of renowned artists confirmed to play The Electric Frog & Pressure Riverside Festival 2015.

Acts including RICARDO VILLALOBOS, SVEN VÄTH, SIRIUSMODESELEKTOR (live), POPOF, SLAM and OPTIMO will play the event, with many more to be announced in the coming weeks leading up to a top weekend of electronic music next summer.

Taking place on the 29 and 30 May – a new format of Friday and Saturday - event organisers released Super Earlybird tickets last week which were soon snapped up by excited fans. A fresh batch of tickets will go on sale at 1pm on 11 December via Ticket Scotland and Resident Advisor.

The outdoor music festival will once again take place on the grounds of the iconic Riverside Museum, on the banks of the River Clyde. The 2015 event will be bigger than ever before, with the addition of the Sunset Stage allowing even more globally renowned talent to join the bill.

SLAM: 2014 is fast becoming one of the biggest years in the career of the dynamic Glaswegian duo,

SLAM. With their fifth album, 'Reverse Proceed', heralded as one of the best electronic albums for years, the two legendary producers continue to demonstrate why they are such an important part of modern day electronic music. SLAM instigated Glasgow's underground house music scene in the late 1980s, going on to be instrumental in the explosion of the UK Techno scene. Their quarter century of exploits have seen them travel far and wide, leaving scorch marks on dance floors everywhere while taking their uncompromising vision of Techno around the world. Closer to home, since 1997, SLAM have curated the Slam Tent at Scotland's biggest festival T in the Park, with some of the world's best known DJs and live acts playing alongside underground cutting edge talent on their monumental stage. Their firmly established monthly club events in Glasgow – ‘Pressure’ at the Arches and ‘Return To Mono’ at the Sub Club - are ranked amongst the best nights out on the planet. Over the last two years, the pair have also developed Slam Radio, delivering some of the best DJs and music that techno has to offer to a massive and loyal weekly following.

Electric Frog & Pressure Riverside Festival Promoter Dave Clarke said: “After the fantastic sold-out event earlier this year, we’re hugely excited to announce the first names on the line-up for next summer's Electric Frog & Pressure Riverside Festival including the Scottish exclusive Siriusmodeselektor. We are delighted to be returning to The Riverside Museum, which is an outstanding location for our city music festival.”

A recent report commissioned from Mackay Consultants by Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival shows that the Highland economy benefited by £4.6 million from the event in 2014. Meanwhile the wider Scottish economy benefited to the tune of £6.6 million.

Based on information supplied by the festival, Mackay Consultants, an economic and management consultancy, also computed that employment at the event translated into the equivalent of 44 full-time jobs in the local economy and 66 in Scotland as a whole.

An appendix to the report also shows that the event has donated an average of £24,000 per annum to around 70 charities and voluntary groups in space and tickets donations over the past three years. “In the 12 years of its

existence, Belladrum has always remained firmly rooted in the Highland community and it is rewarding to see this is reflected in the cash benefit transferred back to the Highlands, and Scotland as a whole, by the event,” said festival promoter Joe Gibbs.

The festival takes place on 6-8 August. A new optional premium three day ticket to an additional headliner performance on the main stage on the Thursday opening night has been added to the event. The Proclaimers have been announced to headline the Thursday night. Weekend, child (12 & under), campervan/caravan and electrical hook-up e-tickets can be purchased.

Bella sold out in record time in 2014, and has sold out each of the last six years, often months before the event so fans are urged to buy early to avoid disappointment. E-tickets are more customer-friendly and less easy to scam, but printed tickets are also on sale via the usual retail outlets.

In 2014 the legendary Tom Jones headlined the Friday of the festival while the Saturday night featured the popular rock band Razorlight at the top of the bill. Frightened Rabbit returned to the event as very special guests. Also featured were: Billy Bragg; Band of Skulls; The Temperance Movement; I Am Kloot; Catfish & The Bottlemen; and Grandmaster Flash

Belladrum 2015 takes place in the beautiful Highland surroundings of Belladrum Estate, near Beauly in Inverness-shire. The independent festival has built a reputation for its eclectic line-ups, its offbeat non-musical entertainments and its all-ages approach. The festival won a VisitScotland Thistle Award in 2009 and is a past winner of the Grassroots Festival Award at the UK Festival Awards, the festival industry’s ‘Oscars’. www.tartanheartfestival.co.uk www.facebook.com/belladrum https://twitter.com/BelladrumFest

Glasgow Film has revealed some of the musical highlights of its 2015 festival programmes, including a one-night music extravaganza at the O2 ABC, a pioneering jazz rescore of an iconic animation, and a celebration of lo-fi Finnish techno label Sähkö Recordings.

On 19 February esoteric indie rock pioneers BRITISH SEA POWER headline A Night at the Regal, an evening of supercool audio/visual magic at the O2 ABC, transformed to mark its origins as one of Glasgow’s oldest cinemas. The band will perform the Scottish premiere of their live score for Penny Woolcock’s powerful documentary film From the Sea to the Land Beyond, alongside its screening. The night also features Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, directors of genre-bending Nick Cave documentary 20,000 Days on Earth, for a live performance of their latest film EDIT, a haunting musical journey written and scored by former-Superstar frontman Joe McAlinden. Live music from local rockers EAGLEOWL and MONOGANON, beguiling film screenings and a late-night party atmosphere round off the perfect celebration of the musical and cinematic heritage in one of Glasgow’s most iconic venues.

The festival will also feature a programme of events as part of its new Sound & Vision strand. Exploring the tight bond between film and music, it presents the very best documentaries and features from around the world, along with live performances that celebrate the greatest of sonic cinema. The strand will feature two events at Glasgow’s Old Fruitmarket, in partnership with Fruitmarket Nights. On 1 March French bassist RENAUD GARCIA-FONS and his live band create an Eastern-Western fusion score to Lotte Reiniger’s seminal 1926 animation The Adventures of Prince Achmed. And on 23 February improv legend PAUL MERTON and pianist NEIL BRAND pay a heart-warming musical tribute to silent cinema star Buster Keaton.

On Saturday 14 March the Glasgow Short Film Festival presents Strange Electricity, a night inspired by legendary Finnish electro label SÄHKÖ RECORDINGS. As well as presenting a 20th anniversary screening of Sähkö - The Movie, the ‘Holy Grail of electronic music documentaries’, there will be rare live performances from label founders JIMI TENOR and TOMMI GRÖNLUND, electro rockers GOLDEN TEACHER, plus late night sets from OPTIMO’S JD TWITCH and Glasgow techno prodigy BAKE (All Caps), all in the lo-fi surroundings of the Glue Factory.

Organised by a voluntary committee (and run by an even bigger pool of volunteers) the Festival prides itself in reaching out to even the most far flung areas of Shetland. Concerts are organised throughout the isles, consisting of some of the best International, British and Shetland music that the world has to offer. In fact, visiting artistes are regularly dumbfounded by the quantity and quality of local musicians that our remote isles have to offer. www.shetlandfolkfestival.com

Isle of Bute Jazz Festival Isle of Bute 1-4 May 2015 The 28th Isle of Bute Jazz Festival has grown spectacularly from its small beginnings to become one of Britain's most popular jazz weekends. Top-class UK and international names

feature in a programme of traditional jazz music in one of Scotland's prettiest and friendliest seaside resorts. www.butejazz.com

Brew at the Bog Inverness 2 May 2015 Super earlybird tickets have already sold out! Next batch of tickets go on sale in October! Brew at the Bog is BrewDog and Bogbain Farm’s gift to the world: a festival full of new music and new beer. BrewDog are the leaders of the craft beer revolution and they are about breaking rules, taking risks, upsetting trends, unsettling institutions but first and foremost, great tasting beers. As one newspaper put it, BrewDog is the new black. Bogbain Farm is based just outside Inverness and was crowned the “Best Unusual Venue” at the 2012 Scottish Event Awards. Brew at the Bog is just the latest in festivals Bogbain is hosting and the fabulous surroundings of this old farm will ensure Brew at the Bog 2015 will go down in history. www.brewatthebog.com Dumfries & Galloway Arts Festival Dumfries and Galloway 21-31 May Our 9-day festival has taken place since 1979. The founding aim was to bring international performers of the highest quality to a region containing many scattered rural communities since then this region has produced some of its own talent of international standing and we’re proud to also be able to present these artistes from time to time. We offer a wide range of events: music – including classical, jazz and folk, dance, theatre, literary, children’s events, plus the visual arts and films. Events take place in a range of venues throughout the region, from large to small, formal to informal, urban to rural. www.dgartsfestival.org.uk

Orkney Folk Festival Orkney 21-24 May Here we are folks – Orkney Folk Festival number 33! Once again we have some big names coming north to join in the fun in May, and from the ceilidh bands to the almost indie strand, we have brought together a broad mix of artists that we hope appeals to everyone’s interpretation of the increasingly expansive folk genre. As ever, our local traditions and musicians – both established and emerging – will be centre stage alongside those visiting the festival. www.orkneyfolkfestival.com
