3G Technology that allows you to use the Internet, watch television, etc. 3G is short for third generation.

4G 4G is the fourth generation of mobile phone technology and follows on from 2G and 3G. 4G services make it much quicker to surf the web on your mobile and tablet - speeds will be similar to what you currently experience with home broadband.

720p Used in reference to video recording. The 720 stands for 720 rows of pixels on a screen. The p stands for progressive, which describes the way the pixels update on the screen. Any video format that has over 720 rows of pixels is described as HD, or High Definition.

AMOLED ‘Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode.’ A display technology that doesn’t need a backlight.

Apps, also known as applicationsVery varied pieces of software that work on phones, including entertainment (games and music), social tools (Facebook and Twitter apps), informative tools (train times, local restaurants) photo editing tools, banking... apps are now a big selling point for Smartphones.

Bluetooth A free data transfer system built into most phones, which transmits over very short distances. Great for sending photos or songs from your mobile to someone nearby, and connecting accessories such as a hands-free headset.

CPUThis is the processor that is the engine that drives your phone. As phones become more powerful, processors are getting into dual core and quad core territory. A faster processor with more cores will work better.

Dual-bandDual-band phones let you make calls on European networks.

Gigabyte/GBA measure of data. A byte is one unit of information. Giga means one billion. So, a gigabyte is one billion units of information.

GLONASSGlobal Navigation Satellite System, an alternative to GPS (see GPS).

GPSGlobal Positioning System. Uses satellite radio waves to work out where you are. Many mobile phone applications use GPS (eg. maps and navigation, social network updates, to show local points of interest, etc.).

HD Stands for High Definition; a video format that has a very high resolution image.

IP67 IP stands for ‘Ingress Protection’. An IP number is used to specify the environmental protection of enclosures around electronic equipment. These ratings are determined by specific tests. The IP number is composed of two numbers, the first referring to the protection against solid objects and the second against liquids. The higher the number, the better the protection.

mAh The mAh capacity rating refers to the storage capacity available for a particular battery. Higher mAh ratings for the same battery type will generally mean longer run times.

Mbps Megabits per second. A speed of data transfer.

Megabyte/MB A measure of data. A byte is one unit of information. Mega means one million. So, a megabyte is one million units of information.

Megapixel/MP A ‘Pixel’ is a dot on a screen. ‘Mega’ means one million. So, a 5.0 MP camera takes an image made up of five million dots. The more dots, the clearer the picture.

MicroSD ‘Micro’ means ‘tiny’. SD stands for Secure Digital. A MicroSD is a memory card that holds digital information, or data, securely. These cards can be transferred between devices (which may require an adapter).

Mobile Jargon Buster


MMS Multi-media Messaging Service. Similar to an SMS, but with the capability of sending video, picture or sound messages.

MP3 Stands for MPEG3 (or ‘Moving Picture Experts Group, Audio Layer 3’). It’s a way of transferring music over the internet.

MP4 Similar to MP3, but for video and sound too.

NFC Near Field Communication. Similar to Bluetooth, allows for connection between two devices that are close to each other.

Operating system The basic system that makes everything in your phone work. There are various competing systems, from different manufacturers.

Quad-Band A Quad-Band phone lets you access some networks in the Caribbean, South America and Central America.

QWERTY A type of keyboard pattern, named after the order of the first six letters. It is the type used on most home computers.

S-LCD, or Super LCD Very high screen resolution. Still needs a backlight, so not as thin as phones with an AMOLED screen.
