Background▪ GoR through MININFRA and MoE is conducting a feasibility study

on introduction of electric mobility to investigate deeply and

provide a comprehensive way to ensure the preparedness of the

country towards a shift from gasoline and diesel vehicles to

electric vehicles

▪ Study consists of data gathering to set the baseline, technical

assessments, awareness raising, developing the enabling

policies, standards and incentives and explore financing for

bankable cases

Rationale▪ Increasing level of air pollution across the globe has been a

cause of concern for policy makers

▪ Cause of growing air pollution is related to a variety of

sources, with transport sector being significant contributor

▪ Motorcycles are the fastest growing transport mode, and

have major climate and air quality impacts

Rationale (Cntd)

Source: IISD 2013. Republic of Rwanda: Greenhouse gas emissions baseline projection

Transportation sector causes a large proportion of the emissions in Rwanda

Green House Gas and CO2 emissions by sector

Rationale (Cntd)▪ Major proportions of pollution in Rwanda are found along

the major roads as result of vehicular traffic;

▪ Electric versions have zero emissions - if using renewable

energies - are cost competitive and have minimum direct

impact on the environment
