We offer a unique major on one of the most vibrant and ancient societies of Europe by creating a coherent image of its culture, language and tradition.

At the crossroads of cultures and peoples, Modern Greece gives an inspiring insight on how civilisations coexist and prosper through their historical interaction and mutual influence.

Many people believe that Greece disappeared after the glorious classical period, but our major proves that Greek culture continued, thrived, collapsed and resurfaced many times in history, exemplifying its distinct strength and endurance.

We also have an exchange program to complement your studies through language and cultural immersion.

Modern Greek and Byzantine Studies at the University of Sydney

The Department Our curriculumStarting with Homer and his continuing impact on contemporary Greeks, we offer a coherent sequence on Byzantium, early modern Greece, the Greek state, its social institutions, literature, cinema, arts, and language.

We provide beginner and intermediate modern Greek language streams, as well as specific subjects for advanced students. Our engaging and accessible language teaching employs innovative technologies and methods.

Our cultural units delineate the development of Greek society – both diachronically and synchronically. They equip you to understand how modern Greek is used in politics, journalism, media, commerce, and beyond.

Student experience—

I started learning Modern Greek to complement my studies in archaeology of ancient Greece. It has been a rewarding experience in learning the language from its core foundation of the alphabet to the intricate grammatical structure, which enables the expansion of my English vocabulary.

The Modern Greek department teaches both language and culture. It has an exchange program with Athens University, which allows students to taste and experience life in Greece, and understand what ‘Zorba’ is all about. I participated in this program in my second year and found the teaching program in Athens to be of the highest order. It is highly recommended. Don’t miss out!
