I love fall! I love the chill in the air, the freshness, the dark mornings with a cup of cof-fee and the feeling of the fall giving season. This is the fundraiser season where we all get together to help good causes and really lend a hand. Modesto is so unique and really bands together to make sure our neediest are assisted and our arts and culture programs are preserved. This is what makes Modesto different than so many people. We get to know one of the most giving couples and ask what motivates them and any tips they may have for others that want to lend a hand, We have just come off one of the most exciting months! October is the MAMA Season and we celebrate the musical talent and the network of venues and events that allow our musicians to do their thing. This is something that we have to make a priority. Modesto needs to be known for live music! Rock and roll is in our veins, from the first slappin’ bass of Rockabilly by Fred Maddox in 1937 to Chester Smith and then in 1958 with Kent Whitt and the Downbeats, leading in 1962 to the Chancellors with Michael Allsup of Three Dog Night to the Ratz,Collage, Lights, Flying Blind and Grandaddy in the 2000’s and now, not an Airplane and up and comers like Josh Rosenblum and High Voltage. This needs to be a civic priority. We need places to play, easy permits and ordinances that allow live music. The 100 year-old Modesto Arch is now lit, thoughtfully restored by an amazing group of volunteers and donors. It is beautiful and the celebration in the streets of Modesto had everything, 100 years of cars, MoBand, Faros, and thousands of people counting down to light the hundreds of LEDs. This is a “can do” kind of town.Fall is a “can do” kind of time and we can all accomplish so much. We are coming up on Veterans Day and thousands of people will get together to run on Thanksgiving morning in the Turkey Trot. We win when we do things together. That is what ModestoView is all about, getting people together to see the good in our city, see the possibilities in our city and tapping in to the talent and the creativity of the people that live here. Thanks for being a ModestoView reader and thanks for spreading the good wood. Re-member to send me your comments and ideas to make ModestoView even better. Have a great Thanksgiving and thanks for giving. Chris MurphyPublisher and [email protected]

Keeping me on my toes!
I’ve been adding to this article and chang-ing it up constantly over the past week or so and I am finally ready to zap it to our pub-lisher. Life has been very busy for me and Modesto View but that is great. That means that Modesto is keeping me on my toes!October was pretty incredible in Modesto with so many events packing the streets and local venues. The San Francisco Giants just won the 2012 World Series a few min-utes ago and we are already getting calls and messages letting us know where every-one can celebrate. It is great to see Modesto come alive and come so often and so fast! So, The MAMA Awards were an absolute success, the celebration of the Modesto Arch was a lot of fun and Halloween events really kept folks entertained and excited in October. It is hard to believe that we are looking at the holiday season about to un-fold again. Time has gone by very quickly this year.Music fans should be very happy about an-other packed month of fun in November. Keep an eye on our “To Do” calendar at www.modestoview.com for constant up-dates. From what we have already been told, there is something for every music fan scheduled this month.Highlights include Air Supply coming to make love out of nothing at all at the Gallo Center on 11/12, Trapt shaking up the Fat Cat on 11/28, Bozz Scaggs bringing a sense of nostalgia to the Gallo Center on 11/16, Purple Haze and Coldshot kissing the sky
at The State Theatre on 11/17, 2012 MAMA winners Gotcha Covered filling ClimaX with excitement on 11/02 and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy getting people swinging at the Gallo Center on 11/27.Be on the lookout for other events at The Board Room, P Wexfords, Queen Bean, Deva Cafe, Speakeasy and other venues this month. We have been really working hard to keep our event listings current and ac-curate. Please email us at [email protected] to let us know what events that you know about or are planning.Personally, I am excited to write that I re-cently agreed to keep my lease going on my funky little downtown apartment for at least the next 12 months. It was really an easy decision. I love the fact that Modes-to’s beautiful downtown is essentially my
front yard! Walking home after celebrat-ing the rededication of the Modesto Arch felt pretty good. Talk about cool yard de-cor! Who needs pink flamingoes when you have things like the Arch and the McHenry mansion in your front yard?!Have a great month in Modesto this month folks. I know that I have a whole lot to be thankful for. I can say with all honesty that my friends in Modesto have become my family. I look forward to helping out with any charity events that I come across this holiday season. I look forward to helping make Modesto a good place that everyone that lives here can be proud of. Do what you can to be good humans. Do good things.I’ll close FamousView this month by say-ing, “Congrats San Francisco Giants! Thanks for the awesome ride this year!”

November marks the fifth anniversary of this column on visual arts in our area. I’d like to thank the many artists in the area who help me keep up with who shows where, what events are coming up, and what might be important to cover. Thanks also to Chris Murphy for the invitation to cover this part of Modesto life for Modesto View. The Chartreuse Muse is celebrating its Tenth anniversary this month. Partners Sandy Veneman and Ellen Roehne have their work featured this month, along with classes and other artists on display. One of the founders of Third Thursday Art Walk, the Muse has also kept life drawing sessions alive. Currently that’s something Jack Mor-ris arranges on every so often Saturdays, 10 am to 1 pm. For more information, drop in on the gallery and art school at 918 Tenth Street. Last month, Chartreuse Muse hosted the artist collaboration project with the Fam-ily Justice Center. Over 30 artists partici-pated, creating new works from selections of works by children in the art programs at the center that deal with issues such as domestic violence. All works in this show were created and donated by the artists, for sale, with all proceeds going to the non-profit center. This month, the show moves over to the Family Justice Center located at 1625 I St. for it’s annual open house and art show, November 8.November is the start of the holiday and boutique fine art, and arts and crafts shows and boutique season. Many will come up, but this year, the annual Hand Born bou-tique event will not take place over its usual Saturday after Thanksgiving slot. Look for items at the upcoming Mistlin Gallery Holiday Members Show and events leading into the annual Dickens Faire the first Sat-urday in December to get your locally cre-ated art presents for the holidays. The Mis-tlin Gallery will be promoting their wares over the November 15 art walk, and other special hours over the holiday season. The
member’s show will hang November 9. The San Joaquin Potters Guild hosts its 2012 Fine Arts Festival, Friday and Satur-day November 16 and 17, at the Spanos Community Center at St. Basil’s Greek Orthodox Church at 920 W. March Lane in Stockton. While the sponsoring organi-zation is known primarily for its ceramics, the festival goes beyond that form to in-clude cards, copper, glass works, art jew-elry, mixed media, watercolor, pastels, pho-tography, weaving and textiles, silk scarves and wood. The ad-mission to the festival is FREE, with raffle prizes and an area high school juried ceramic exhibition. For more information see www.sanjoaquin-pottersguild.org

Oh ModestoView Reader, if I were more akin to mixology…if I could actually pour something that someone either than a compliant encourager or myself might ac-tually enjoy, I could have been a bartender. I could have been a contender. I could be drinking four fingers of Bushmills at 8 a.m. on a Saturday writing this article, but that’s not really the point.Though I am writing this at the end of Oc-tober, I will nonetheless confidently con-gratulate the Giants on their second World Series righteous butt kicking. There was hardly a better way to celebrate the second game shut-out than sitting bar-opposite of Firkin & Fox’s bar manager, Andrew Nol-sat, and flanked by the always lovely Philip Johnson. I’ve been finding myself on a Firkin & Fox barstool quite often as of late. This is likely due to the fact that there’s something about the fall air that drives me to consume dou-ble my body weight in delicious beer. Lo-cated in the center of downtown and pour-ing out 16 oz. drafts in mugs large enough to make you feel as though you’re getting an upper body workout with each sip, Fir-kin & Fox is, therefore, my November des-tination.King of the beer tap castle is bar manager Mr. Andrew Nolsat who has been at Fir-kin& Fox since its’ Modesto introduction five years ago. Nolsat states he loves the customers at Firkin, the laid back atmos-phere, and generally enjoys working the downtown scene; “It beats sitting behind a desk any day.” Nolsat also states, “We get amazing cli-entele here; people and performers from Gallo Center, or sports fans to watch the game, and a lot of people from the industry. I do not feel like we’re in competition with other restaurants downtown; we encour-age supporting downtown no matter where you go. I also think Firkin really adds to the Modesto scene…. We’re laid back here. You can come eat, drink, play pool, watch the game… We have a huge dining area and are family friendly and reasonably priced.”

Yeah, and also they have Stella, New Cas-tle, Smithwicks, Dust Bowl, Hops of Wrath, Angry Orchard, Guinness, Hobgoblin, Sam Addams, Gordon Beirsch, Shock Top, Fruit Tramp, AND hold the only two kegs of Moylan’s Orange and Black Giants cel-ebratory beer in Northern California (note: it’s a hell of a manly brew). I was almost hesitant to ask Andrew about the Coors and Bud Light taps given all of excellent choices. He reinforced my newfound love of Firkin by stating: “These are the least popular. People here love the premiums.” Speaking of-- So, you have yet to be told of
Firkin’s beer tasting nights? Very unfortu-nate; allow me to help. The last Wednesday of every month is “Brewery Night”. For an affordable $15 fee, this means you get to: 1) sample six different beers from that month’s selected brewery, 2) taste a num-ber of tasty beer-paired appetizers, 3) listen to a rep from the selected brewery fill your head with amazing beer-based smarts, and 4) vote on which beer you prefer the best-- the winning beer is then circulated into the Firkin tap selection. Tickets can be pur-chased at Firkin, or, you know, you can give me $15 and I’ll promise I’ll pick them up
for you. I’m good for it. Trust me.Amazing beer, tasty late-night bar food, big street-facing windows for premium people watching, and engaging Andrew Nolsat… you’d have to be one of those boring, no-fun sorts of people to not want to stop by.-Monday Nights - Open Mic Night-Last Wednesday of the Month - Brewery Night Firkin & Fox1111 I St., Modesto209.575.2FOX (2369)www.firkinfoxmodesto.com

A dream comes true for two local thespi-ans, Megan Lynch and Traci Sprague! Meg-an and Traci met while attending CSUS. Both were theater majors and shared a desire to manage their own Black Box stu-dio. Luckily, Traci’s mom found the per-fect place with an ideal location. The space used to be a downstairs court room at 948 Eleventh Street. The rooms were demol-ished but with their vision and hard work, were transformed into a theatre complete with a green room, snack bar and lobby. Their first adult play was Harold Pinter’s Betrayal. It was dramatic, well performed and thoroughly engaging.Megan and Traci look for plays that are whimsical and always have joy. They relish collaborating with actors in their “labora-tory.” They believe if you take care of the process, it will take care of the product. This belief can be applied to all aspects of life.Center Stage Conservatory has been around since 1997. Traci and Megan have been at the helm since 2010. Center Stage Conservatory’s mission statement:In an effort to bond the ever-growing, mul-ticultural and socioeconomically diverse people who comprise the population of California’s vast Central Valley, we aim to create a community of united artist who experiment, perform, and pursue a wide variety of subjects and styles. Through performance and process-driven education
programs, we engage, inspire, create and empower artistic discourse. They have had success running Center Stage Youth Summer Conservatory over the past three summers. CSYSC lasts seven weeks for young people ages 10-20. Classes include acting, theatre history, voice and movement, improvisation, stage combat along with many other specialized topics. The participants are immediately called young artists. The young artists re-hearse from 10:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. All are encouraged to perform to their highest level. Everyone learns to take care of each other. Their mantra is: “I’ve got your back!” Center Stage Youth Sum-mer Conservatory strives to foster a crea-tive environment that is both safe and ar-tistically freeing. “We aim to inspire a life long involvement in the arts by engaging, educating and empowering young artists to discover and refine their talents through the collaboration and performance of clas-sical theatre. CSYSC will be going to An-cient Greece in 2013.”

As I start to write this article, I realized I’m licking my lips! There is nothing quite like the delight on my palate invited by fine prepared cuisine while paired with the perfect wine. Yes, my friend Zohreen and I Adamjee, indulged in a fabulous af-ternoon at Galletto Ristorante. Zohreen, a stellar amateur photographer, she was gracious to capture the visual setting and plated appeal through her gifted eye. Be-tween the two of us, all that was placed in front of us was photographed and inevita-bly devoured! Galletto Ristorante was opened in July 2001 by Tom and Karyn Gallo. Located in the heart of downtown Modesto you will find this casual, yet elegant atmosphere that says welcome to everyone. Enjoy an attractive full bar, a spacious patio, a beau-tiful open dining room with a view of the chefs, and a pleasing banquet room. Gal-letto’s also has an underground wine cellar dining room featuring a Tuscan feel that houses hanging curing Italian meats play-ing host to spectacular private parties. Executive Chef, Michael Goularte, at the established age of 28, spends a minimum of 60 hours per week perfecting all that is served from the vast upscale menu. Chef Michael is married to a pastry chef and they have a 3 year old son and a 1 month old baby girl. Just the thought exhausts me! Chef Michael has an impressive resume, the energy to maintain it, and the culinary passion to create it. He grew up in Gustine, CA, went to the CA Culinary Academy in
Gratified at Galletto’s
San Francisco, and did his externship at La Maisonette in Cincinnati, OH. For a total of 7 years he worked in Palm Beach, Colo-rado springs, and Pebble Beach. For fun, he likes to golf at Creekside and Dryden and spends time with family and friends for big meals. His food fave would be the il-legal in many countries “foie gras” though he also loves peanut butter, lol! Chef Mi-chael loves the feedback from customers, making everything from scratch, the rush of a stack of tickets to plate, and to share the kitchen passion and influence amongst the 60+ employees! I so get it!!!Time to dine… I’m allergic to seafood so I had Zohreen sample on the Diver Scal-lops paired with Gallo signature chardon-nay. She was hesitant to try the quail egg, but I convinced her by giving her the “don’t wimp out on me look”! She was pleasantly surprised. I started with the Risotto di Par-ma, prosciutto wrapped risotto with wild mushrooms in a balsamic glaze paired with a Maso Canali, pinot grigio! Wonderful! We shared a warm sautéed carrot salad and we both especially liked the goat cheese on it. On to the Lamb Duo, Dana~licious! One entrée’ with a rack of lamb and a Su-perior Farms t-bone, eggplant caponata, and a balsamic glaze paired with a Mac-Murray Ranch, pinot noir…wow!! So you are probably thinking we should be full, but NO! Here comes dessert! House made gelato! We tried 3 flavors; thyme/rosemary, espresso, and fig! So good! Chef Michael really wanted us to try his Panna Cotta;
traditional Italian vanilla bean pudding with a cranberry compote, so we couldn’t deny him once it was paired with Dow’s 20 year tawny port wine! Oopsie, sorry Zohreen for forking you for the last bite!!!Next time I’m having the Kurabota pork chop, Japanese named for the Berkshire Pork, prized for juiciness, sweet flavor and tenderness! Irresistible not to comeback for! Modesto View’s signature question to Chef Michael: Beatles or Stones? It was like a no brainer, Stones!, he said with a subtle confident hands down smile! We were on the verge of breaking out in his fave Stones song ”Beast of Burden!” Galletto Ristorante209-523-45001101 J StreetModesto, CA 95354Hours: on - Thurs 11:30am to 10pmFri 11:30am to 10:30pmSat 4:30pm to 10:30pmSun 11:30am to 9pmwww.galletto.biz

“Summer feels like it was just yesterday,” someone whispers to me over a candlelight hot cocoa that warms my palette on a brisk evening in the heart of downtown. And al-though I hadn’t said them, the words felt as though they’d left my own mouth. As I sit outside at the Queen Bean listening to the sounds of the open-mic performers I can’t help but notice the cold air mixed with the turning of the leaves. Instantly I’m reminded that it’s that time of year again where being grateful means giving of oneself. As the Thanksgiving season ap-proaches I know I can think of no better place to give and receive a great deal than in the Modesto Area. Here’s some great food, music & more to check out…A great way to get you swinging on a star is to check out the scene at Gallo Arts Center on November 27th. The swinging sounds of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy are returning by popular demand. Tickets won’t break your bank, $20-$50. But don’t snooze or you’ll lose Daddy-O’s and Chickadee’s because this party will sell out
Something for every budget
If a bit of swing isn’t your scene take a gan-der down the street at Deva Café on Thurs-days for Thursday Night Ramble. For the cover of $5 you’ll find your inner musical spirit tantalized tremendously to some very colorful local sounds. The sounds of-ten vary but the enthusiastic crowd is al-ways a key player at this event.Big Bad Voodoo Daddy Info: tinyurl.com/voodoodaddy209Thursday Night Ramble Info: tinyurl.com/ramblethurs
Feeling a bit more cerebral with your en-ergy and looking for a one of a kind experi-ence? Head your feet over to Camp 4 Wine Bar. There’s nothing like the spirit of great people and a warm atmosphere to make for a fun evening. Not sure how to pick a good wine? Head down anyway! Start a conversation over your first glass and let the experience of a new flavor be on your palette. Stop by on Monday nights and get lost in the sound of local artist, not an Air-plane. camp4wine.com
If the bustle of Black Friday already has you in a tizzy think no more about the stress of the season that begs you to spend to give! Keep those $$$ local & check out every day specials in the heart of downtown Modes-to. Take a walk on J Street! By Modesto Famous / Ruben PorrasOctober was a very musical month in Modesto as many local artists put their best foot forward to battle for MAMA Awards. This worked out well for me because I was constantly made aware of some of the best music available from our local artists. My goal with this column is to make Modesto View readers aware of what our locals our creating. Some of these tracks were written on tour busses while others were written in bedrooms converted into recording studios. They all have heart and passion built into them and knowing that they were produced locally makes them all the more special.Panda Style by Tony Vibes“Panda Style” is a parody of the popu-lar “Gangnam Style” by PSY. Tony Vibes wrote and produced the track in honor of World Series MVP Pablo Sandoval’s game-one performance. Sandoval smashed three home runs into the stands and inspired this dance-worthy fun track. You will see him playing along side of Matt Harrington at Speakeasy, P Wexford’s, The Boardroom and other local hot spots. The duo is known for pumping out lively covers of popular tracks but “Saturday” is all Buettner and it sounds like it should be a hit on the radio. Buettner infuses a bit of tropical fun into this smooth track and that makes it great for parties. Modesto California’s State Theatre was the place to be on October 23! We celebrated musical talent, venues that host live music, dance club promoters, live music promoters, tipped our hat to Dr. Ginger Colla, long time music teacher and conductor and opened the door to the future the our new Youth Band category. The MAMAs returned to their home at the State and excite-ment was in the air. As Chris Murphy and Chris Ricci opened the show with welcomes from Vice Mayor Stephanie Burnside and rad beat poetry from Deputy County CEO Keith Boggs, we turned the show over to TVs Alan Sanchez and the evening was on!Live performances from Lindsey Pavao, High Voltage, We The Same, Patty Davis, Blood Pig, Gotcha Cov-ered, Purp Reynolds, Monkey Knife Fight, Eli Allsup and Ryan Russell and an amazing performance by Shad Har-ris and the Groovenators. The event is free for all of the invited nominees and guests. We need to celebrate our live music heritage. The City of Modesto needs to embrace live music and make it a civic priority. Live music is the core of creativity and culture and it says much
about the people that live here. The Gallo Center took home honors for the Best Venue and P Wexford’s won for small venues showing the range of peo-ple that are voting for the awards and the wide cross section of our commu-nity that support live music. We have an amazing history with Modesto arguably being the birthplace of Rockabilly music with the big slap-pin’ bass of Fred Maddox of Maddox Brothers and Rose back in 1937. Merle Haggard and Buck Owens played here with Chester Smith over the airwaves of KTRB which lead to early rock and roll of Kent Whitt and the Downbeats in 1958 which lead to the Chancel-lors with Michael Allsup of Three Dog Night, the Ratz, Collage, Lights, Flying Blind, Grandaddy and now with Not An Airplane and High Voltage for the future. This is something special and we all need to listen to local music and make sure that these bands can make a career of creativity and make Modesto the new Athens GA or Austin TX. We have the talent, we just need the will to make it a priority. www.modestoareamusic.com

This has been the most busy times in my entire life. It seems like my friends and I have been working non-stop on college applications, IB test sign ups, essays and SAT tests. I even had to miss out on be-ing the MAMA Award girl because I had a monster math test the next day. Senior year was supposed to be easier than this! Oh well, there is always spring. We have just finished an exciting water polo season and were so happy to share the MMC title for Varsity Girls! Way to go girls! So after sectionals on Nov 3, it is time
to slow down a bit and start to get in to the fall baking season. I love to bake. Any-thing. Cookies, pies, pop tarts, you name it. I have been browsing recipes and can’t wait to get in the kitchen. Best of all, it is fun to share your baking. If you are worried about all the pies on Thanksgiving, start your day at the Turkey Trot at Legion park and get your 5K in.This fall our Project Hope club has been doing many amazing project and we have helped contribute to projects in Haiti and Ghana. It is very rewarding to see these things happen. This month, the Modesto Peace life center has a fundraiser at the State Theatre on November 3 featuring the new CD release of the amazing Homegrown, with MoHi teacher Patrick Durr. We are so lucky to have them headlining this State show that raises money for the Modesto Peace Life Center. Get a great show and
help a really important cause. As it is dark so early and it will really feel-ing like winter soon, you can enjoy the all ages music here in Modesto. I love the local bands that play at Queen Bean, Deva and Barking Dog. It is so good to have places where we can go with our friends and our parents and have a good time and hang out. If you like a band, make sure you get a CD and tell people. Check out the Thursday Ramble or the open Mic night at Queen Bean on Sundays and Monday nights at Firkin and Fox. But whatever you do, get involved in Modesto and see things things you can do to make it better and more in-teresting.
Peace, life

I have just finished an amazing busy month. The MAMA Awards are one of my favorite times of the year as it is the most amazing one night of music in Modesto. See-ing all of the different genres, all of the radio stations, the venues, bars and restaurants all together, it makes you realize what we can do if we collaborate and all lend a hand. I also finished working on the Modesto Arch restoration pro-ject that all came together through a huge group of people joining to-gether to make a difference and the result was a huge new dose of civic pride and a restored arch that was re-lit on Oct 26. I was honored to be the MC for the evening. As we move into fall, we dub this season “fundraiser season”. This is the season of giving and as we approach Thanksgiving, the spirit of giving is in the air and it is also when the needs are the greatest. There are so many local organiza-tions that are in need of funding and volunteer time and there are no shortage of events and request that citizens are being asked to at-tend and consider. How do you know what do to? Where should you go to lend a hand? This month, we brought in a dynamic team to share some giving insights. We welcome our “giving couple” Kenni

and Lou Friedman.I got to know Kenni back when she was an educator and was setting up the MGM/Gate program in the mid 70s. She was a visionary then about that programs would help serve people and students. Today, she is one of the most dedicated citizens and has championed many of the projects that were shared by Bette Belle Smith will keep the needs of our community front and center. Let’s learn from Kenni and Lou. As we ramp up to the Salvation Army Kettle Kick Off, where Kenni is one of the Christ-mas Angel Fundraisers, we asked her, what makes Modesto special when it comes to community volunteering and what are our greatest needs.
“Modesto is amazing when it comes to giv-ing and volunteerism. Many Salvation Ar-mies call us for information about out Ket-tle Kick-Off. This fundraiser takes hours of volunteer time and effort nonetheless com-munity members love the reward of giving to those most vulnerable. “Love Modesto” is another example of community volun-teerism and many other cities are replicat-ing what has been started here. The biggest need is making sure our chil-dren are given the tools to be good citizens; to have a good education and to stay in school. That’s why I am involved with the Boys and Girls Club of Stanislaus County. We will need volunteers who love to work with children and are willing to share their
talents. I want to stress that you need to give time and funds to the area where you have the passion. With that you are able to get oth-ers to support you in your cause. Ask your-self, what do I do that gives me the most satisfaction. What are the skills I can of-fer? Look for the nonprofit that matches your skills and interest and inquire as to how you can help.I volunteer for organizations where I have a passion and where there is the greatest need. I came from a family where volun-teerism was an expectation, whether it was helping a neighbor or an organization, you just did it” If you think you are busy or stretched too

thin, check out what this turbo volunteer is involved in. She just finished the United Way Power of the Purse luncheon helping women and children in our community Kenni Friedman has a BS and MBA from

She served on the Memo-rial Hospitals Board of Directors, the Sut-ter Health Board of Directors and the Sut-ter Gould Medical Foundation Board. Lou Friedman is the other half of the Kenni Friedman giving team. He served as CFO for Gallo Winery for many years and now is a family estate planning attorney with the Gianelli & Associates. We asked Lou what people can do from a financial planning point of view to create sustained giving programs. The reason we asked this now was to give you all plenty of time before the end of the year. His directions were simple. You want to make your giving as tax effi-cient as possible. Some ideas are:1) Give stock that has gone up in value (and that you have held for at least one year.) You get a deduction for the full market value and never pay capital gains tax on the
appreciation.2) Time your contribution so you get the most advantage.a) If you need a deduction this year, give appreciated stock or cash to a ‘donor directed fund’. This gives you an immediate de-duction for your gift, and you can direct the fund to distribute to public charities in your name in the future. Donor directed funds require a larger gift to set up the fund, but after that there can be smaller gifts and the fund balance does not need to be maintained. Funds include Stanislaus Commu-nity Foundation (minimum initial gift $10,000), Vanguard Charitable Endowment Program (minimum gift $25,000), Fidelity Charita-ble (minimum gift $10,000), and every major brokerage firm has a fund.b) If you are close to being able to use the standard deduction for in-come taxes, make your 2013 chari-table gifts in December 2012 and itemize deductions for 2012 and then take the standard deduction for 2013.3) Give a used car, boat or RV. Almost every major charity has a program to take these assets and give you a deduction for the mar-ket value. Avoids the hassle of running an ad or Craig’s list and dealing with strangers.4) Leave a gift on your death.a) IRAs and other retirement plans are great to leave. If your family takes them, they pay income tax on what they take out and get only a part of the value. The charity does not pay tax and gets the full value.b) Leave your home. You won’t need it after you are gone and you can get an income tax deduction now for signing over the future value to a charity.

Looking great for Blues and Roots by Earl Matthews
November is looking great for the Blues and Roots scene in Modesto and I hope to see packed houses all month long.I’m very excited to announce that on Mon-day Nov 12th the Sumner Brothers from Vancouver B.C. are coming to the Barkin’ Dog for a very rare local show. Rumor has it that some of the fellas from The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit will be sharing the stage that night as well. These guys are real up-and-comers so make sure to put this on your calendar and make the effort to come out for the show. There is a good chance that their next trip through California will require fans to spend some real dough to get a ticket to see them.November Thursday Night Ramble’s are looking good. We are going to feature some old favorites and welcome some new faces to the Ramble stage.Returning to the Ramble this month are Francesca Nicola Bavaro, James Lawry,
Russell Irvin, Marirose Powell and Nathan Ignacio. Some of the new faces you will see are Scott Berriar, Chadwick Adams, Adam Bishop, Paul Tunkle and the Dandelion Massacre. Follow me on Facebook to find out more about what I’m up to and see where I’ll be from day-to-day. Keep in touch and let me know how I can help make the Modesto music scene better for you.
The members of The North Modesto Kiwanis Club are proud to announce that Modesto’s Favorite Son and legendary film director and producer, George Lu-cas, will be the Grand Marshall of their 2013 Modes-to American Graffiti Car Show and Festival parade. The parade will take place June 7, 2013. “We are honored that George Lucas will be a part of our 2013 event and it shows how important his “growing up” years in Modesto were as a part of his career. Giv-en his hectic schedule and limited private time, this is a rare opportunity for all of us to honor him. This
will be a very positive event for our City of Modesto and its citizens”, said Sanders. George Lucas is a graduate of Downey High School in ‘62 and went to USC Film school. His career was set in motion by the success of the film American Graffiti. The cruising of 1962 on 10th and 11th streets and the people of Modesto inspired the film that is nowlisted in the “Top 100 Films” and allowed Mr. Lucas to go on to create his many films including Star Wars and recently sold his company Lucas Film to the Walt Disney Company. The Modesto American Graffiti Car Show and Festival has just received the Modesto Area Music Association MAMA Award for Best Large Event for 2012. There is a monthly fee for her dealers but she does not take out a commission percentage from any individual sales, which is a great way to build up many dealers and keep prices extremely inexpensive for consumers. VOTE or DIEBy Tru Luv Lopez
It may sound just a bit extreme to make such a statement like “Vote or die”, but in my personal opinion if you are not part of the solution you are a part of the problem. Your voice is mute and simply your argu-ment dies!Presidential election 2012 is mostly fo-cused on Democratic Barack Obama & Re-publican Mitt Romney. Where do the Hip Hop community & politics mix? Groups such as Public Enemy, Ice Cube, 2Pac have always been pioneers in Hip Hop & their proactive movement! In 2012, we see artists such as 50 Cent & Nicky Manaj supporting Republican Mitt Romney & artists such as Jay Z & Chuck D leaning towards democratic Barack Obama. Online you see Katy Perry sport-ing a Obama outfit and movie actors are jumping in on the support for Mitt. De-pending where you live there are many measures on the ballot that we have to vote on. Don’t believe the hype! Follow up on the facts, not the advertisements. Look for
the supporters of the propositions, you may be surprised who endorses who and what.I am a firm believer in being proactive in your community. Know your politics in your city and the issues that effect you on a local level. Our great state of California is in great debt! Crime is on the rise and we have to pay close attention to our elected officials. If you do not vote in this upcoming elec-tion. I hope you’re not the person com-plaining about our system later especially when you may have had an opportunity to have your voice heard! Hip Hop is about awareness, the issues, what affects us and what is happening in our world. Like I said in the very beginning, Vote or Die.
Local Gift Boutique! Two Holiday Gift Sale dates are during Third Thurs-day Art Walk Nov. 15 and Dec. 20 from 5-9 p.m.
with space for 6 artists. A third sale is Saturday, Dec. 1 from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. and 10 artists may participate. Artists set up a “trunk show” or display table for that one day only. Contact Suzanne McCaslin at 968-3464 or [email protected] with questions.

The human body is a remarkable creation; in most cases it can heal itself when it’s sick, mend a broken bone and with the right training can astound us with its remark-able abilities in strength, fitness, endurance as well its muscular beauty that lies within us all. With that said, building muscle mass quickly can easily be achieved with a spe-cific type of workout plan and knowing what to eat and when to eat it.In photo “A” you see my body structure that resulted in overly eating and drinking all the wrong things with zero exercise. And just as easy as it was to balloon my body to a XXX extra large, it was just as easy to get down to a size small. I achieved this through a disciplined nutrition plan and exercise and in a matter of months I was able to lose all that weight rather quickly back in 2005. During this year of 2012 I of-ten went back and forth in weight sculpting my body to different forms like in photos “B” and “C” depending the season we were in and if I was training for an endurance event. In the winter, when the Triath-lon Season is over for me, I like to put on muscle. In photo “B” I went from 150lbs to 170lbs with 10% body fat. During that time I focused on bodybuilding and zoned in more on weight lifting versus cardio as well as increasing my protein intake verses carbohydrates. By mid winter, I was bench-pressing 250lbs and felt very strong while sporting a waistline of 32 inches. In com-parison to photo “C” I slimmed down to 140lbs with 5% body fat and got down to a 29-inch waistline. I reached both of these goals within a four-month time period and I achieved sculpting my body so quickly with knowing what to eat and when to eat it. Modesto View Readers, to build mus-cle mass quickly I cut down on my cardio training by 65% and upped my weight training by 40%. In total my weight train-ing secessions lasted much longer then my cardio training secessions and not only did I continually add more repetitions while working on this stronger body structure, but I also increased the weight I was lifting rapidly. The workout equation to achieve
Building Muscle QuicklyBy Efren Martinez
this was quite the opposite of my normal endurance training, but it worked very well and I got fast muscular results. But lifting weights was only part of it; the real secret in building muscle fast was the nutrition and knowing what to eat and when to eat it. After my countless studies, I learned that the most beneficial time to build your muscles is within the 2 hours af-ter a hard weight training session. During your weight training secession, your body goes through enormous stress. As you’re lifting weights, your muscles literally will get hot and the small fibers in them began to tear. After your workout, your body be-gins to rebuild those torn fibers with the nutrition you put into your body. In truth, your body actually hungers for the right food needed to heal itself and rebuild those fibers to get bigger and stronger.Below are a few suggestions of what I ate after my strength training workouts and when I ate it. These simple foods worked very for well me and sure, results may very depend on your metabolic rate and body type, but the science is solid, I’m living proof of that. As far as slimming down to a body structure in photo “C” like I said, I archived both of these body-sculpting
goals within a 4-month period. I went from a healthy weight of 150lbs to a 170lbs muscle mass body weight then way back down to 140lbs my preferred racing weight and it’s the weight I am currently sporting now. Look for an upcoming issue in your Modesto View (Fit View) in regards to how I was able to lean down to 140lbs from 170lbs so quickly.Always consult with your doctor before starting any nutritional diet or exercise program.Below are a few secrets on what I ate; when I ate it as well & some recovery tips.Suggestions of nutrition right after you’re strength-training workout:30-40 grams of wey protein.5 grams of creatine.70-80 grams of dextrose. “sugar”5-10 grams of glucosemean. “optional”
Suggestions of nutrition within the 2 hours after you’re strength-training workout.• 1st choice eat a can of tuna,• 100 grams of rice cakes• Wash it down with grapefruit juice.Or a 2nd choice would be a 6oz steak, 1 potato single serving of orange juiceNote: For bodybuilding, make sure you include protein in every meal of your day. The best sources include eggs, chicken, lean beef, pork, seafood, soy, and low-fat dairy.
Carbohydrates are best consumed at breakfast to give you the energy you need to burn off during your day.Recovery Tips:Antioxidant rich foods help reduce inflammation and decrease muscle sore-ness. One of the easiest ways to get an adequate amount of antioxidants and carbohydrates is by drinking tart cherry juice.Taking an Amino Acid supplement 45 minute prior to a workout helps create the building blocks for building muscle as well as speeds up your recovery. Make sure you stretch out those mus-cles properly after any workout; studies have shown it can be more beneficial to do so after verses before.

NEW MUSIC FOR YOUR EARS
This month I would like to take the time to tell you guys about some good music in our metal scene these days. First CD I re-viewed was that of this years 2012 MAMA Award winners Zombie Death Stench. If the Zombie Apocalypse actually happened, this would be the soundtrack! Entitled “The Coming Bloodbath” this CD perfect-ly fits its title with a thrashy Death Metal sound that will melt your brain. I strongly encourage you to go out and check out this hardworking band and pick up a copy of this CD. You will love it. ZDS is one of the hardest working bands on the scene and they probably should have been the band to play the MAMA awards.Next on my list is the highly anticipated re-lease of Warpath Assassins “Under a Black Flag”. This CD is an all out assault on the senses! This straight up metal attack is a blistering homage to the old school Sep-ultura style of “take-no-prisoners” metal! Jason James takes you on a journey through the mind of a trained killer with his own brand of lyric writing that we have come to know from him for the last 15 years or so. Match that with the bombastic drumming of James Porras and the highly technical aspects of Crusher’s bass playing you have one of the most entertaining bands our METAL scene has to offer! These guys live, breath, eat & sleep MODESTO METAL! If you have seen these guys powerful live show then you are going to love Warpath
Assassin’s Under a Black Flag!Lastly this month I would like to encourage everyone to go out and support YOUR local metal scene. I would like to challenge the local public to go out and discover our local metal scene. Who knows, you may actually go out and see something you like. We’re not a bunch of moshing crazies as some would make you believe. We pretty much just stand there and watch our bands with pride and engage in good conversation just like The Thursday Night Ramble and other events around town. I strongly encourage you to go out and discover our wonderful local metal scene and truly enjoy all types of Modesto music, not just what’s popular or trendy. That’s all for me this month!! As always keep one foot in the gutter and one fist in the gold!!

A martial art is not just a means to defend oneself or improve one’s physical health, al-though these are certainly some of the ben-efits. A martial art environment may even reveal how to navigate life for those paying attention. Sometimes these life lessons are not directly taught but can be absorbed by open minds just in being present in class. For example, I heard a story in class one day. It was an old Chinese parable from the days of Lao Tzu. It went like this:There was a farmer who had a beautiful horse which everyone in the village took delight in. One day the farmer’s son left the gate to the horse’s corral open and the horse ran off and went missing. The villag-ers found out and said, “Oh what bad luck, your horse ran off!” The farmer shrugged and replied, “It could be bad, it could be good. I don’t know.” The villagers were puzzled at why this turn of events could be considered good. The next day the horse returned and brought with it 10 other horses, equally as magnificent as the first. The villagers quickly made an assessment. “What good luck! You have many horses now, all beau-tiful!” The farmer only shrugged and re-

plied, “It could be good, it could be bad. I don’t know.” Again the villagers could not understand the farmer’s reaction.A week had passed and the farmer’s son was breaking in one of the new horses. The horse threw the son off and the young man broke his leg with the fall. The villagers la-mented the event to the farmer. “Such bad luck! Your son broke his leg and now how will he help you on your farm?” The farmer gave his familiar shrug and said, “It could be bad, it could be good. I don’t know. The next morning, the General decreed that all the young men be gathered up from the villages to fight in the war. But when the recruiters arrived at the farmer’s vil-lage, they rejected the son because his leg was broken. The villagers proclaimed relief to the farmer but he would hear none of it.The farmer spoke with a smile, “It could be good. It could be bad. Know one knows. Life’s journey has many bends and where it ends we can not say. Why worry? If you live without attachment to results, you may live a longer life.”

“Messiah” Sunday, November 18Trinity Presbyterian Church1600 Carver Rd.
This is the fifth consecutive year that local singers will gather to participate in a sing-along performance of Handel’s “Messiah.” The community-wide event, which is free and open to the public. Whether you’ve sung “Messiah” once or a hundred times, or just enjoyed listening to it from the audi-
ence or on your CD player, the “Messiah” sing-a-long gives singers at all skill levels the opportunity to enjoy the experience of sharing music together. In addition to a dozen well-known choruses, the assem-blage will also get to sing some of the solos. “If you’ve always secretly wanted to sing a solo part in the “Messiah,” this is your chance,” said MAMA Lifetime Winner Dr. Ginger Covert Colla, who will again conduct the performance. Colla has selected several traditional solos to be sung by the chorus, including “Comfort Ye,” “He Shall Feed His Flock,” and “Come Unto Him.”
Singers are encouraged to bring their own scores; however, copies will be available to borrow. For more information, call (209) 765-6388.
