Bask by definition: To expose oneself to
pleasant warmth. Basque Cuisine by defi-
nition of Gary Gervasoni: Simple food.
Finding both of them together right here
inModesto at Gervasoni’s restaurant since
1975. From the moment I walked in from
the back alley entrance I had the instant
sense of something special. I wasgreeted
by Gary Gervasoni, original owner and
general manager, like I was already an old
friend. The décor is reminiscent of simpler
days gone by, giving an open invitation to
relax and enjoy. If you let your eyes travel
throughout the full bar and restaurant you
will see and feel inspiring nostalgia.
Gary Gervasoni at the smooth age of 73
was born in Patterson, moved to Modesto
@ age 21 where he began as a bartender.
Gary and his wife Myrna have 2 children
they raised while building their successful
restaurant establishment. Gary has done a
bit of everything including cooking, dishes,
and bussing tables as he wasborn into the
restaurant business, including Sno-White
Drive-In and his parent’s place The Ranch.
One of his fave pastimes is taking out his
42’ trawler boat in the SF bay while enjoy-
ing a vodka cocktail. He has many close
friends that also enjoy going to SF major
sports events. Yes, Gary is a Giants fan,
(Let’s Go Oakland!!!), but he did attend all
of the A’s World Series games in the past.
Gary also travels to his cabin for some R&R
in the mountains near Pinecrest. I asked
Gary where he sees himself in 5 years, he
answered “If I’m not here I don’t know
where the hell I’ll be!” Love that!
Wayne Kimura, at the loose age of 55, has
been the head chef since Oct. 2009. He is
single and a golfer. Wayne is also a sports
enthusiast interested in Nascar, basket-
ball, and football. If Wayne wasn’t a chef
he could see himself a race car driver as he
raced go-carts 30+ years ago. When Wayne
isn’t swamped in the kitchen he likes so-
cializing with the patrons also known as
friends sampling on a Corona or a Patron
tequila. His fave cut of steak would be
meaty 20oz. rib eye. He never attended cu-
linary school but he is great at duplicating

the previous chef’s original recipes still on
the menu. Chef Pierre was with Gervaso-
ni’s for 20+ years before his passing. Tony
Ratley is the line cook working in sync
with Wayne. Tony has created an original
mango salsa over swordfish for the menu
that gets regular rave reviews.
Gervasoni’s has a lunch and dinner menu.
The lunch menu serves many farmers
and the portions are nothing shy of huge!
The dinner menu is all family style in-
cluding bread, soup, and salad! On Wed.
and Thurs. it’s Basque Night! Along with
the entrée choices such as steak, lobster,
duck, lamb, and more you will be served
bread, soup, salad, veggies, macaroni
salad, lamb stew, pigs feet, french fries,
and beans! Thinking the elastic waistband
pants would be a good choice as I’d have
to try it all! For my dining experience I was
treated to the Chicken Jerusalem, tender
chicken breast pieces, artichoke hearts,
and a savory cream wine sauce with a
mixed veggies and pilaf rice. Wonderful!
1st Wayne: Beatles or Stones? “I like coun-
try music, I don’t listen to that” I said
“really?” he nodded yes & I had to put him
in a headlock.
2nd Gary: Beatles or Stones? “Neither one.”
Shaking his head slowly I noticed some
sweet jazz playing in the background, so
Gary was spared as we both delighted in a
conversation about Fats Domino, Lil’ Rich-
ard, Frank Sinatra, and Johnny Cash.
From their Frog Legs, Sand Dabs, Sautéed
Sweet Bread, and daily specials you won’t
find so many culinary wonders all in one
place anywhere close to what they have to
offer Modesto’s dining cliental. Dine well
at Gervasoni’s, I’ll see you there!

O’BRIAN’S TAVERN
By Kate Serpa
Ever-so appropriate for November, and for an Irish tavern:
-Fill up a shaker with ice- 3 counts of Jameson- 3 counts of Apple Pucker- Cranberry Juice- Shake and strain into your preferred glass.
Honestly, I recommend just putting a straw in the shaker. These apples are so tasty you might as well cut out the middle-man-glass-pour.
Monday Night Madness: 8-10pm, Pitcher specials
Monday Night Football Special:$1 domestics, and free hot link sandwiches during the game
2 for Tuesday: Any two enormous drafts for $6
Wednesday- Industry Night: Buy 1 at regular price, the second is $1
Thirsty $3 Thursdays: Anything in house for $3 and karaoke night (an excellent combo if I do say so)
Wild Wacky Weekends: Fri-Sat, 9 pm-11 pm…. too many drink specials to list. Go find out yourself.
Superstar Sunday: 7 pm- 9 pm, $1 domestic, $4 bombs of your choice. Be sure to come and catch the game; it serves up a fun crowd.
IRISH-APPLE
O’Brian’s Tavern was, up until this past
week, completely off the radar for me. I
had never previously been, and being the
95 year-old woman I often feel myself to
be, I didn’t feel myself too inclined to try
someplace new. How then do I adequately
describe the fantastic welcoming feeling
I got when I first walked into O’Brian’s?
Well, it was midday Friday and I was rush-
ing from school to the interview. It was
terribly hot outside, and I was feeling
burned out to begin with, so, once arriving
at O’Brian’s I sat outside to have a ciga-
rette…wait, my parents read this. Back-
track. I was sitting outside O’Brian’s to…
not smoke, not smoke at all, and I swear
to you it wasn’t three seconds before two
regulars had engaged me in conversation.
By the time I walked into O’Brian’s, I had
met two new people, and by the time I left
(and I am not being cliché here, people), I
had a chorus of ‘goodbye Kate’ to salute
me out.
A bar is what you make it and O’Brian’s
does have an incredible set of regulars
who are very vocally passionate about
their favorite tavern. A lot of laughter
was going on while I was there (and no,
it was not directed at me)
and everyone seems
to know everyone,
and everyone
knows and
loves Mary.
The lady
who has
owned the
l a y - o f - t h e -
land behind
the bar for the
past four years
is Mary Kline. You
wouldn’t know this is her
first bartending gig since she manages
carrying on conversations with two people
at either ends of the bar, while pouring a
round of drinks, while looking fantastic,
with such ease. I can barely walk in high
heels
a n d
c h e w
gum at the
same time, let
alone multitask
like Mary. She told me
she originally came here as a
customer and was then asked if she would
like to bartend. Mary is not short of praise
for O’Brian’s. She told about when she
broke both of her arms and was out of
commission for three months. She told
me that every day, people from O’Brian’s
would come and help her out. Mary stat-
ed, “These are my friends, and these are
my family.”
O’Brian’s is incredibly fundraiser-
friendly (this is not an exaggera-
tion) and does much to show
customer appreciation. Their
calendar of events is so packed
it could keep even the most in-
troverted drinker busy for the
month busy by default. Aside
from their usual weekday hap-
penings, cook offs are very com-
mon affair (including, but not limited
to: ribs, soup, and chili), as are pool tour-
naments, customer’s birthdays (which I
hear are quite the affair), themed costume
parties, a semiannual Reno trip…take my
word for it when I say the list is extensive.
“We like to give our customers lots of op-
portunities to have fun,” stated Mary. No
kid-
ding.
A list
of O’Brian’s
weekly events is
included at the end of the
article so you can clip it out and stick it on
your fridge.
O’Brian’s opened in 1981 and is named
for Brian Lee who owns the establishment,
along
with Danby’s. Aside from the very well-
priced well-stocked bar, O’Brian’s has its
own pool league, where “the best shoot-
ers in Modesto play,” to work their cue-
ball magic on the two pool tables, and
dart boards, 7 HD TVs, each of which is
showing a separate game, and is genu-
inely laid-back and completely unpreten-
tious. Apparently also, Mary informed
me, they make some good Bloody Marys.
“She means,” a fellow bar-goer chimed,
“the best Bloody Marys.” As a person
who knows some really, really annoyingly
picky Bloody Mary enthusiasts, I was sure
to take note.
In short, I found O’Brian’s Tavern to be
very casual, very personable, and a place I
fully intend on visiting again.
P.S. Thank you Mary, Brian Lee, Tina Tem-
ple, and everyone at O’Brian’s for getting
my derailed day back on track. And thank
you John for the beer!

November enters the season of holiday
generosity, but good surprises often start
with the shopping season prior to Hal-
loween. Local Arts philanthropist and
Car Dealer Tony Mistlin announced to the
Central California Art Association at the
Mistlin Gallery during the October mem-
bers’ meeting that he will donate $30,000
in 2012 and 2013 towards paying rent at
the current location in Tenth Street Place,
1015 J Street, Modesto. He credited Doris
Scanlon for her two terms as CCAA presi-
dent for keeping the Mistlin Gallery oper-
ating through the recession. The CCAA
has a goal of building its bank account
so that it can apply for matching grants
to extend educational programs, promote
the visual arts and provide cultural experi-
ences to the community
The Current Mistlin show is “Of Spirals,
Twists and Turns” the Memorial Medical
Center Cancer Services Art Exhibit by Me-

This time if year is so very crazy. We
are in the last few weeks of water polo
and the homework is piling up. There
is still time to do fun things. One of the
most fun things to do is go to your high-
school football games. This is as fun
as it gets to hang out with your friends
and cheer for your team. There are still
lots of games to come, so make sure you
show your school spirit.
It is fun to go hang out with people and
do something fun like sing along. At
the State, you can sing “Off to see the
wizard” and your other favorites at the
Wizard of Oz Sing-along November 4 at
the State Theatre. In addition to the fun
sing along, it is cool to see a really clas-
sic movie in a really classic theatre.
It is nice to take a break from the stud-
ies and kick back and listen to music
and enjoy some really good mocha and
snacks. The Queen Bean is the most
chill place to hang. Here are a couple
of Queen Bean Shows you can check out
and Sunday night, you can show off your
talents.

TL-“What don’t kill you will only make
you stronger” Hard work & backing
”Money” can make significant differ-
ence in the careers of many artists &
DJs. Many times music politics are not
taking in to consideration, leaving many
who are not fully prepared, left in the
dust! Talent or not! That being said, if
not major but on a smaller scale, there
are organizations such as the Modesto
Music Awards, which award The Valleys
Music Industry Players with trophies to
show their appreciation for their hard
work and dedication.
This article is the portal for a frac-
tion of the urban genre covered in the
ModestoView, including Djays, Rap art-
ist & Singers Spanish & English. In this 3
part interview, I introduce Luna J (Best
Urban Award) Carlos DJ Liquid Ugarte
(Best House DJ) & DJ Topek (Best Urban
DJ).
Luna J (Best Urban Award)
TL-Besides music what other interesting
Projects have you been involved with?
I am the Charity Ambassador of a com-
pany called Greater Purpose. Recently
this summer I spent 3 weeks in Uganda,
Africa helping Plant A Seed Founda-
tion build a sustainable chicken
farm for 1,500 children in need.
Prior to the trip, we held fun-
draisers in the central valley
and San Francisco and to-
gether raised $55,000 for
this project. I was also
blessed with the oppor-
tunity to sing and record
with students at a school
in Kabale, Uganda. They
will be featured on my
upcoming single called
“Together We Are Strong”.
This song also features chil-
dren from the Modesto Salva-
tion Army Youth Choir. All pro-
ceeds will be donated to great charity
organizations focused on helping youth
in need.
TL: Who gave you your first break?
LJ: DJ 9T9 started mixing my music into
his sets on Hot 104.7 & it helped gain a
lot of exposure for me here in the cen-
tral valley
TL: When the Best urban was announced
what was your first reaction?
LJ: I was really excited and honored es-
pecially given the fact that I was in the
category with a great artist like Dev.,
who has been on the top of the charts
this year. I’m very grateful to have my
hometown support.
TL: Soon after you where pronounced
the winner how did you feel about the
turn out?
LJ: I was really glad to have my family,
friends & fans they’re supporting me.
TL: Where and when is your next per-
formance?
LJ: 2nd Sunday - Special Fall Edition in
San Francisco. November 13th.
Check www.lunajmusic.com for more
details and future events.
Carlos DJ Liquid Ugarte (Best House DJ):
TL: Who is DJ Liquid?
DJ: He’s an artist. When DJ LiQUiD is
performing, you know your going to get
a skillful, intelligent mix that stands out
from the crowd.
TL: Does this award mean anything to
you as a DJ?
DJ: Absolutely. Most of the other nomi-

nees in my category play house music at
the clubs, while most of my performances
are at events completely focused on dance
music like house, electro, and dub-step.
Winning this award, knowing I had the
support of real house music lovers in the
Modesto area makes me feel validated as a
house music DJ.
TL: Do you have any released mixes or
projects?
DJ: I have worked on several music proj-
ects for some big names like Millenni-
um Dance Complex of Hollywood,
Paul Mitchell, SuperCrew (from
MTV) and more. I also make
award-winning competi-
tion music for dance stu-
dios and choreographers
nationwide. Unfortunately
my projects are not avail-
able for download but I am
looking forward to releasing my
first full-length house mix before
the year is over. The best way to experi-
ence my performance is live.
TL: Where can we find you spinning in
the Central Valley?
DJ: After several years of playing house
for Till Dawn Productions, I am proud to
have my new affiliation with party Produc-
tions. Their 2nd Annual “Haunted Man-
sion” event has over 1,000 people attend-
ing and will take place on October 29th
featuring house music all night long. You
can catch me there in the mix and cele-
brating my birthday.
DJ Topek Best Urban DJ
TL: How did you get your name?
DJ: The name Topek came from my young-
er days as a street artist. It had been given
to me when I couldn’t decide to call myself
so my friend said that I should write Topic.
Not liking the letters I changed the
ic to an ek. Making a name for
myself in the streets I col-
lected enough money and
bought my first set of
Technic turn-
t a b l e
1200s at the age of 21 and decided to stay
with the name Do Topek.
TL: Would you or do you spin artist from
the CV?
DJ: I actually do spin artists locally
and try and help as much as I can
for them to get heard. I feel a
little help goes along way so
if I can help there music get
heard in clubs, mixes or help
share music means I know
goes a long way to the artists
and fans of music. There’s
music talent in the Central
Valley that I feel that doesn’t
get the recognition it should. Big
shout-outs to the boys from Unique
Swag Music.Tragic.Alina Hansen.Spit
Sick...Xplicit.Jae Havana.Treidon Music
and Juicalini
TL: What equipment do you prefer to spin
on? Turn tables or a computer? & Why?
DJ: Being able to rock a show with turn-
tables or cd players, my preference is
to use Pioneer CD players with Serrate.
When the CD players came out it made
Ding easier for its light baggage instead
of hauling crates of records around.
Now I just bring the laptop. A lot of DJs
made the switch to CD’s so I bought a pair
as well. Venues in Modesto carried them
in the clubs so getting comfortable using
them and practicing at home still with my
players I made it my Weapon of Choice.
I currently am an owner of
Technic 1200s, DivX
1000’s with a Pio-
neer 800 mixer
and Serato Sl1
TL: Where can
we find you
spinning in
the CV?
DJ: You can
catch me in the
mix every Tues-
day night inside of
Miki Sushi, 180 Leve-
land (off McHenry behind
Chase Bank) for Industry Night, FatCat
music House & Lounge, Aqua Lounge and
Copper Rhino, playing all your favorite
Hip Hop, Club Bangers, Top 40 and House
music
TL: Any Last words?
DJ: Big ups to my crew Talk of the Town,
Carlos Lombrana, Dj Phlim, Dj Tease, Dj
Chopstix, Jeffrey Nitaira of Miki Sushi,
Chris Ricci without them I wouldn’t be
where I am today. Much love.

BREAST CANCER AWARENESSWith last month being Breast Cancer
Awareness Month we all saw a lot of
pink. There were the usual pink rib-
bons, pink t-shirts and everything pink
in the NFL! The message for all this
pink is quite serious; to alert women
that early detection of breast cancer
saves lives. According to the American
Cancer Society, there are already more
than 2.5 million survivors here in the
United States. The 5-year survival rate
is now at 89% and when breast cancer is
found early and confined to the breast
that survival rate jumps to 98%!
Still there are many women who do not
take advantage of early detection. The
message that is reinforced throughout
October is for women to have regular
screenings and clinical breast exams.
Mammography rates for women over
50 have doubled since the introduction
of National Breast Cancer Awareness
Month in 1985. And the survival rate
has jumped as well.
Here in Modesto we had a few of our
own ‘special events’ supporting Breast
Cancer Awareness. Bella Vagos Salon
on McHenry Avenue hosted the 2nd
Annual “Passport to Pretty in Pink” fun-
draiser on October 20th. With almost
200 guests, this event raised awareness
and money for the “Look Good Feel Bet-
ter Foundation’ while celebrating three
very special survivors. Nary a dry eye
was found as I read stories writ-
ten by survivors Monica
Rossiter, Gayle Fry
and Brittany
Bruce. Their
s t o r i e s
were heart
wrench-
ing and
r e s o -
n a t e d
of the
c o u r -
age it
takes to
face this
d r e a d -
ful disease.
The entire crowd cheered for these
strong women and the support of their
families and friends who stood by
them as they battled breast cancer. The
highlight of the event was a serenade
of Gayle, Monica and Brittany with the
music of somewhere over the Rainbow
by Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwoʻole and a
Hawaiian dancer who finished the ser-
enade with gifts of Lei’s for each lady.
“We love to get involved with the
community and create unforgettable
memories at Bella Vagos.” said co-
owner Meagan Burns. “ It makes it even
sweeter when we can give back to these
foundations.”
Meagan’s business partner,
Arica Carranza added,
“Breast Cancer
touches a ten-
d e r
spot in so many people hearts. Almost
everyone knows someone who has been
affected. We so much enjoy our annual
Pink Parties where friends, relatives and
supporters come together to remember
those lost, celebrate the survivors, and
encourage those in the battle.”

Leave your bad vibes behind to enter in-
cense infused atmosphere full of Intrinsic
Elements, serenity, and uplifting secrets
that will energize and enlighten your
mind, body, and soul. Intrinsic Elements,
found at 1214 J Street, focuses on retail
gifts for people of all ages with a holistic
type theme. Susie and Michelle, the own-
ers, opened the boutique in December
2010 and have been serving the commu-
nity with their metaphysical love that is in
each item that they present. They special-
ize in mother nature’s secret powers
to heal internal wounds, wash away
despair, ignite positivity in ones
self, and promote happiness. Many
of their items can also make perfect
gifts for those you love by focusing
on their specific likes and desires. For
example, the Vibes Up bracelets are
created with liquid crystal, infused
oil, and plant botanicals that offer a
holistic approach to good health and
a positive well-being. When you wear
the bracelets they can help specifical-
ly in pain relief, will power, energy,
stress relief, and much more. Mother
Nature’s Therapy Bears are small or-
ganic stuffed bears to help “clean out
your ickies” and make you feel safe and
loved.
Placing inspiring language around your
personal space is known to create positive
thoughts and energies. The boutique car-
ries Letterosis, which are photographs of
letters that are seen in different types of
objects in nature or landscapes that can
be personalized with names or encourag-
ing phrases. Other positive messages and
symbols etched into stones are placed
throughout the shop for everlasting in-
spiration. Therapeutic, self help, and well-
ness books can be found on bookracks
towards the back.
Different types of crystals and geodes can
be found around the boutique too. The
different types of crystals and tumbled
stones have specific meanings and natu-
ral powers if you keep the stones in your
aura. For example, amethyst, I learned at
the shop, “is known for its healing pow-
ers, it has the ability to attract spiritual
energies and calm restless thoughts. Pro-
vides peace of mind. It is a good stone for
meditation and to attract serene dreams.”
The boutique has huge pieces of Amethyst
around the store to enhance these natural
healing powers into the surrounding area
and many other crystals that generate ho-
listic healing properties.
Intrinsic Elements boutique is full of
unique and stunning pieces of jewelry
made with various materials like precious
stones, pearls, and crystals. They carry
beaded rings that look like fireworks on
your fingers, zebra print stones, flowers
made out of bright colored jewels, and
much more. Some of the newest items
they offer include blinged out jewel shirts
made for women and little girls. Feather
headbands are so in style right now and
you can find these throughout the bou-
tique as well.
Some very popular items are
the Buddahlicious mas-
sage and body lotion
candles. Just light
the candle and
use some warm
“wax” for

sage with
the tranquili-
ty scent:) Some
other favorites
are the birthstone
fairies, mermaid figu-
rines, and the pure essential
oil perfumes.
Peaceful sounding instruments are
placed in front of the boutique. They
carry ancient singing bowls that are used
by tapping a copper or iron bowl with a
mallet and swirling it around the bowl to
create a soft ringing of vibrational sound.
They produce the sacred “Aum” sound
that relates to meditation and de-stressing
techniques. I found a wooden xylophone
that was very fun to play along with other
newly made ancient style instruments.
By making one stop into Intrinsic Ele-
ments you can start the journey you need
to uplift your mind, body, and soul. You
can easily obtain items that will create in-
spiration and energize your
well-being. Go ahead

11th Street: Modesto’s Corridor of PowerI began a photo essay documenting 11th Street in Modesto during the summer of 1996. My intention was to photograph it for six months and offer the project to my employer, The Modesto Bee, for pub-lication. It was to be a “slice of life” of what I had observed as Modesto’s “cor-ridor of power.” Bee editors disagreed with my concept (“Too negative,” said one) and passed on the project.
Fifteen years later, my documentation finally comes to an end with my recent move to San Francisco.
A mere 1.5 miles in length, 11th Street represents the highest concentration of power and wealth in the city. The original Gallo Winery was located at the corner of 11th and D Streets. Fire Station 1 and the Modesto Police De-partment were across from each other at 11th and F Streets. City Hall, County Administration and the Courthouse oc-cupied three of four corners at 11th and H Streets.
The E & J Gallo Winery has long since relocated to its current location about a half mile away. The original structure, now ivy covered, bears a wooden oval
plaque in front marking the winery’s founding in 1933, the year Prohibition ended.
Modesto City Hall and Stanislaus County Administration now share space inside Tenth Street Place, with an entrance on 11th Street.
The Gallo Center for the Arts, home to the Modesto Symphony Orchestra, is the shining cultural jewel of the city at 11th and I Streets. The Fat Cat Music House and Lounge has been home to countless concerts and themed parties. The Barkin’ Dog Grill has single–handedly created a performance space for live jazz music with a dedicated following.
Sadly, Ernie Bucio, the person largely responsible for the lively jazz scene, died suddenly and unexpectedly in late August. A great void has been left in Modesto with his untimely loss. But the music persists and he lives on in the solid foundation he built along with his wife, Karen. And Barkin’ Dog Grill owner Hanibal Yadegar continues to nurture live music performances.
Across the street you will find Tresetti’s
By Adrian Mendoza
17
World Caffe, a restaurant and bar where such luminaries as John Cleese and Jeremy Renner have dined. Or you may find Modesto Symphony music director David Lockington enjoying a post-per-formance bowl of shrimp gumbo.
Tresetti’s sidewalk patio area is an ideal place to watch the Annual 4th of July Parade and observe the local chapter of the fraternal organization “Clampers” walk their flag decorated lawn mowers down 11th Street.
Or you can kick–off the arrival of Summer at the corner of 11th and J Street and watch the city–sanctioned “Graffiti Night” cruise, in honor of native George Lucas and the film he made, based on his youth in Modesto.
But it’s not all joy and prosperity on 11th Street. You will also find the poor and despairing there. But amidst that despair you may find a glimmer of hope, as in the song that Delinora Green might sing from her bike. “Stand By Me” is not just part of her repertoire, but perhaps a plea for understanding and compassion.
There are not enough words to capture what I have witnessed and experienced in the decade–and–a–half that I have been pho-tographing the street and enjoying the friends I’ve met and the music I’ve heard.
I have been working all year editing and distilling the tens–of–thousands of photos into a coherent narrative. My hope was to
have been finished selecting and to have published a book by No-vember 11th (11th Street launched on 11/11/11).
Editing down to a manageable number of photos has been much more difficult than I could’ve imagined and I’ve compounded that challenge by continuing photographing on the street long after I should’ve stopped creating. But such is the burden of the creator.
This has been a difficult year, personally, beginning with the death of my mother in January. I also lost several very close and dear friends, Doug Hard, Jeff Broome and most recently, Bucio.
Their exit from this physical realm has been a reminder of the fleeting nature of life. Of the need to cherish and celebrate those that we love, both in life and death.
A Kickstarter fundraiser is in the works to publish a book and an accompanying interactive website. Angel investors are welcome. Look for it in the coming year.
11th Street existed from the earliest days of Modesto’s history and will persist long after I’m gone. I was just an observer for a few brief moments, witnessing and documenting that which I saw. A hundred years from now, my hope is that observers might look at this body of work and feel that they are observing a fair and accu-rate record of what life was like on 11th Street in Modesto at the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st centuries. And the beat goes on...

BELLADONNA BEAUTIES
Lights, cameras, pin-ups, hotrods,
rockabilly and a true sisterhood.
Yes, the Belladonna Beauties a
group of six stunning women
making their mark as a social
club that started in the Central
Valley, which now has extended
to the Bay Area. This sisterhood
started out in 2007 by the lovely
Sophia Mendoza, with her passion
for pin-up. She found Sarita Mar-
tinez a promoter of Psychobilly
and 80’s club music. When the
two ladies decided to join forces
together it sparked a fabulous sis-
terhood with dedication and pas-
sion within our subculture.
When I sat down with the Bella-
donna Beauties, I asked, “What
drove you to be so passionate
about such an old genre of style?”
Each one of us girls has the same
taste for Pin-up, Rockabilly/Psy-
chobilly and Classic Cars. With
that our “Sisterhood” became a
close friendship. If ladies are interested
in becoming a Belladonna Beauty we start
at “Prospecting” this could take up to sev-
eral months and consists of working hard,
have a positive attitude, ethics, good heart,
time and most important common sense.
Our motto is “QUALITY NOT QUANTITY”
In order to have the fabulous opportunity
to wear the Belladonna Beautie jacket.
Your event Everyone Get Lei’d, how did
that come about with three stages, pin-
ups, classic cars etc.? Miss Sophia Val-
entine answered, “Rita always threw her
own birthday parties with bands. Once,
bands got wind of what was going on it
expanded into so much more then what
we accepted to happen. It started out as
a small event three years ago with hotel
rooms for your crashing convenience. Ev-
eryone Get Lei’s went so well that we de-
cided to move it to a bigger venue. More
bands, pin-ups and car clubs wanted to
be apart of the Belladonna Beauties Event.
We had no idea what kind of success this
would be. Our event has doubled in size
and with growing support from the bay to
L.A. Belladonna Beauties fans are our big-
gest supporters.
Lots of hard work and dedication to pull
something so thrilling together in the
Modesto area. So. Keep you eyes and ears
open for these Beauties for they will al-
ways be watching you.

Hey all! Jill Ferris here. The MAMAs are an
fun time of the year. Many people learn
about local musicians and the new songs
coming out. So in the spirit of the MAMAs
I have decided to go with all MAMA nomi-
nees and one former winner for your lis-
tening pleasure. Alright everyone, please
enjoy the music and as always don’t be a
stranger! Come by Fridays nights to the
Copper Rhino for “The Weekly Issue”. Live
and local music every Friday! Make sure
you go support the places that bring in
live band and please buy their CDs and tell
friends to buy local music. You will find
some amazing songs and learn to like new
local bands or discover music that has
been here for a while and you just missed
it. Each listing is Band, Song and type of
Music
The Pendletons; Devil or Angel,
Rockabilly/ Psychobilly
Talk about an impressive band! They are
so much fun and put on one heck of a

sound of a MUCH larger band. They do not
disappoint so definitely take a listen!

The word groovy comes to mind in
such an awesome way! Very upbeat.

songs of Belgian songwriter Jacques Brel
are brought to vivid life in this intense mu-
sical experience. Brel’s legendary romance,
humor and moral conviction are evoked
simply and directly, resulting in a power-
ful, intimate, bold and emotional evening
of theatre.

Since as long as I can remember, I have
heard this bogus phrase more often than
once. Regardless, running like a girl
would be OK for me as long as I could
run like Ali Klikna. Recently she showed
me, along with everyone else at this year’s
Cancer Run and Ride, how a girl can run
competitively.
I have been a DJ in our Modesto area for
over 21 years and was there to Entertainer
the Event. Not only did I have the pleasure
of providing the beats along with some
silly antics, but thanks to my wife for tak-
ing over on the sound system, I was able
to jump in the 2-mile race and I do mean
jump in, “every which way but loose” and
it was quite noticeable that a silly explo-
sion of crazy neon had taken over meth-
at morning. As I was about to make my
way over to the start line I looked over at
my wife and said play one of my 15-min-
ute mixes I’ll be right back. But, as I ap-
proached the start line overly enthused
and busting out at the seams, my friend
reached over and said, “you know you’re
blowing off loads of race energy” Oh my
goodness, he’s right. Suddenly I glanced
over at my wife with a smile and yelled,
“make it a 20-minute mix!”
At the sound of GO it was time to get
our race on and we all took off like
rockets ready to kick some fitness
Astronauts. Well, almost all of us, there
was one runner who held back and that
was Ali. As our race started, I fired it up
in the lead and surprisingly stayed there
at a comfortable pace and after about a
mile into the run, I felt even better so I
dug in hard and took a bigger lead for the
reminder of the race. Well, it was all about
the home stretch and out of nowhere came
this girl, this lady, with her inspiration of
how a girl can run. As I was approaching
the finish line, I felt good, I felt strong, un-
beatable and it was all my race. Then Ali
showed me what girl power is all about. As
she approached me from behind, I heard
her breath in my ears and before I knew
it I was chasing her shadow. I was blown
away seconds from the finish line and in-
stantly I thought. Wow! This lady’s got it
going on, she had saved some for the fin-
ish and proved to be a smarter and a faster
runner than me. Ladies and Gentleman, I
give you 1st place over all, Ali Klikna!
After the race, I quickly went over to Ali
to congratulate her on a great race and as
for me; I had just ran the fastest 2-mile of
my life with a time of 11:33. Sure I was
thrilled, but honestly a bit bruised com-
petitively. But, as I have learned from the
best and my thoughts rapidly turned to
find out what makes Ali so darn fast. Sure
she had great running form and was smart
enough to hold some back for the push
at the end. Eager to learn, I asked her.
Well, it turns out that she used to run for
The University of Santa Barbara and cur-
rently holds The University record for the
800 meters with a time of 2:10.81, which
is the 5th all time record at UCSB. WOW! So
this would explain why she’s so screaming
fast. She’s had some of the best training
in the world. But wait, here’s the most in-
spirational part of Ali. As I was getting
into her advice, her husband walked over
with a stroller, she then reached down to
care for her newborn babies. Yes, I said
babies as in plural. That’s all for me folks!
This is one incredible lady. I was thrilled to
have learned that she had recently given
birth to two beautiful twins 6 months ago.
OMG! Hands down, she’s not only a talent-
ed runner but she also serves to all those
expecting mothers out there that it isn’t
the end of your fitness competitiveness
once you’ve decide to give the gift of life.
Mothers to be, Ali as my witness, it can be
just as thrilling afterwards on any race day
with a win over all. So in conclusion, run-
ning like a girl might get a bad rap from
some, but as far as I’m concerned, running
like a girl like Ali, is something I wouldn’t
mind being compared to. Congratulations
Ali for placing 1st over all with a time of
11:26 and serving me a side of 2nd place.
I’m cool with it because this old dude who
took home the Masters Award got more
out of this race than any other and thanks
to you, it’s now my best foot race I have
ever raced.
YOU RUN LIKE A

I am sitting here right
now relaxing after a
long walk along the
canal nearest to my
house and I am hap-
py. I was stressed for-
ever living away from
Modesto and it feels
great that the stress
stayed where I was. I feel
an overwhelming sense of
ease here and that is how I enjoy living.
This is nice.
It has been just a couple of weeks since
I have been back and I have already been
contacted by a number of old friends.
I have had the chance to get some great
inside information and learn about some
interesting places that I have never expe-
rienced before.
I was contacted today by my friend Nick
Shattell of the band, not an Airplane and
he was excited to tell me about his latest
album, “It Could Just Be This Place” that
will be released online via iTunes, Ama-
zon and Spotify on November 8th. I am
listening to the pre-release copy that he
attached and I love it. I always get lost in
his passionate lyrics.
I have followed Nick
and his various ef-
forts for a long time
and it is nice to see
those efforts really
paying off. The cool-
est thing about not an
Airplane is that they are not
doing what they do for the money.
These guys just want to be heard and have
a chance to celebrate music. To make that
a bit easier they are tweaking the online
music distribution system with this album
so more people can afford to hear it.
They will release the entire album as two
tracks titled “Speak In” and “Speak Out” in
the spirit of a classic LP. Fans will not have
to pay a high album price online to own
the collection of songs.
Shattell feels confident about this plan
but understands that there could be a
glitch with the idea.
“This album was designed to transcend
the media forms and remain in tact as a
true LP, side A and side B. The other beau-
tiful part about this is the fact that even
iTunes system of pricing will be baffled by
this, and most people should be able to get
the album for only $2. It will also be on
Spotify, and Amazon, with hopefully the
same pricing confusion,” explains Shattell.
In addition to listening to music, I have
also been trying to eat my way through
Modesto. In the last few days I rediscov-
ered the “Drag It Through the Garden”
pizza at Extreme Pizza and the “Starbucks
Roll” at Tokyo Express. I also believe that
I have discovered the premier destination
for fried food buffs in Modesto.
I walked into Bleachers Grill at 222 McHen-
ry Ave. to get a burger and discovered an
interesting list on their menu.
These folks serve up 20 different types of
French fries along with other fried goodies
including green beans and pickles. This is
chubby guy foodie heaven. I am going to
ask if I can live in the back room and be
their official taste tester. I think this is a
brilliant plan, but I’ll have to ask Sharlene
and her crew for permission.
Enjoy November in Modesto. Eat a really
big bird, hold someone close and explain
that you could not be more thankful for
them, challenge your children to a leaf
fight at Graceada Park and enjoy a bit of
shopping at the Handborn Modern craft
Bazaar on November 26.
Handborn will be taking over the streets
at seven different locations downtown
to display their cool homespun gifts and
crafts. Killer music and good eats are usu-
ally also involved. Good times!
Thank you for reading my words! Find me

up and getting diverse. Let’s keep that
vibe strong!

Mediation worked for the NFL…can it
work for me?
Thankfully, we’re spending time on fan-
tasy football, in sports bars, and snacking
on the couch every Sunday. We were THIS
close to not having any NFL games this
season. Lucky for us, a mediator pushed
the players and the owners to reach a
solution and we ended up watching the
Niners surge into first place and Raider
Nation get their mojo back. So what does
that have to do with my latest business,
personal, or property problem?
Many people and companies may not
realize that there is a faster, more cost-
effective, and constructive solution to
conflicts and disputes than just going to
court…Mediation. Lawyers like mediation,
the NFL likes mediation (let’s hope by the
time you read this, the NBA does too!) and
you should like it as well. Recognizing the
growing need for the public to have direct
access to mediation resources has been
the founding principle for Pacific Media
tion Group. “Anyone involved in a dispute
will benefit from mediation,” explains Da-
vid Jamieson, Founder and Principal. “If a
lawsuit has begun, mediation can bring it
to a conclusion acceptable to all parties. If
no lawsuit is pending, mediation can lead
to speedy resolution and avoidance of the
costs and uncertainties inherent in most
litigation.”
“Mediation is ideal for any issues that may
require dispute resolution,” says Founder
and Mediator Debra Campbell.
“Examples include property is-
sues, divorce and custody, busi-
ness disputes, family conflicts,
employee-employer relationships,
and estates and trusts.” Another key
advantage of mediation is that it pro-
vides a safe environment for parties to
gain distance from their emotions to bet-
ter deal with each other.
Professionalism and experience make the
difference in a mediator’s ability to ensure
all parties stay focused on productive av-
enues for settlement. When you work with
a mediator “the result is an outcome that
allows all parties to leave the table feel-
ing that a productive solution has been
reached,” says Jamieson.

Well we all sur-
vived the MAMA
Awards and a
few surprises as
usual. Gallo Cen-
ter for the Arts
was voted the best
venue to see live mu-
sic at to many of the au-
dience’s surprise. The Gallo,
although a state of the art venue
that caters to a select demographic
of Modesto, is not the blue collar MAMA
audience demographic. The gentleman
accepting the award made promises of
having morelocal acts at the Gallo in the
future which is good news and would
be good for our local music scene. Hope
it happens. Marirose & the Gypsies who
won the event to open for the Michael Mc-
Donald Gallo show is the only local act to
grace the stage of the Gallo so far. Well
the Gallo has a glossy email send out to
their people and anyone can vote for their
favorite MAMA category, that’s democ-
racy and the power of social networking
in America folks. Tom Waits said, “The
big line giveth and the small line taketh
away.” While we’re on the subject, the pro-
motional board at the State Theatre has
embraced local promoters like myself in
the area to give input into programming at
the State. The hope for me and other pro-
moters is for the State to align themselves
with the grassroots community of artists
and musicians to keep the State healthy
and our art community area as well.
On the rumor mill: no, Salty’s Record Attic
is not closing. Owner Ramona Sabin is back
at work and doing better so come down
and check her out. Jim DeNoon owner of
Buck’s Music is closing and liquidating
all stock so he can get back to Las Vegas
where his family and livelihood are. And

special guests throughout the night. I’ve
heard the CD and it’s smoking with mix-

ably the best sound engineer in Modesto.
Check out Earl at: [email protected] , or

The State Theatre continues to bring in
some quality shows, the Flying Blind Re-
union street party was smoking with great
music and good turnout. The State has
booked so far: Elvin Bishop Nov. 11th, The
Tommy Castro BandDec. 9th, and Tower
of Power Dec. 29th, and there is noise be-
ing made that the State may start having
a dance floor for some of these shows
where it is cruel and unusual punishment
sitting in your seats all night long doing
the bar stool boogie. Call the State (209)

And the mighty John Griswold of Global
Music Series finished out the season at the
Whitmore Mansion on Oct. 8th with Jazz
guitarist Richard Smith, and Classical and
Flamenco guitarist Franscesco Buzzurro’s
playing. John is singing the swan song
again with promises of no more shows,
however he wants all of us to use his web
site which promotes events in the area. So

Although we have lost a major dynamo for
live music at the Barkin’ Dog Grill, Ernie
Bucio, the band plays on supporting live
music in an all-age environment. John
Black of JB Presents continues to bring in
smoking local and regional R & B acts. No-
vember 5th, Red Dog Ash, 12th Big Little
Band, 16th Second Tradition Band, 18th
Roger Perry Band, and 19th my home boy,
Big Earl & the Cryin’ Shame, (I love that
name!). The Barkin’ Dog also has a Jazz
Jam with David Dow on Thursdays where
musicians can sit in and network.
More music on the local scene. Camp 4
Wine Café Wednesdays with Scott Barten-
hagen. Chef’s of New York singing great
Cathy Canales on Saturdays. Galletto Ris-
torante Fridays, Saturdays with Natalia on
the grand piano & sultry vocals cocktail
hours. The Deva Café has Thursday night
Ramble with house band Big Earl & Poor-
house Millionaires hosting an acoustic jam
with 2 bands featured per week. And don’t
forget third Thursdays Art Walk in the
downtown, lots of music and art going on
and is really festive. The Boardroom in the
downtown continues to support live mu-
sic 4 nights a week with Tim Allen Tues-
days, Thursdays Neil Buettner and Matt
Harrington, Friday’s dynamic duo Johnny
& Kelly, and Saturdays rotate with: MCW
Band, Strange Brew, The Nines, & Public
Domain. Dress code weekends so call so
you don’t offend, (209) 409-8665 for de-
tails.
Off the beaten path: the Clarion Hotel
& Shooters on Sisk road have comedy
Mondays, Salsa dance lessons Tuesdays,
Wednesdays with the Creole Jazz Kings.
And the St. Claire Theatre on 7th Street
featuring Saturday comedy shows in an
intimate theatre environment with bar
and food available. Sips Bistro and Wine
shop also features Jazz and popular mu-
sic in a casual setting Sunday afternoons
from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. with food and wine
tasting. Regulars on the music menu are:
Jazzoni, Michele Richardson, and Dave
Bagget. Call Diana for more details at (209)

The West Side Theatre in Newman contin-
ues with an eclectic lineup in a restored-
theatre environment. The calendar: Nov.

12th Blame Sally, and Nov. 19th Magnolia.

And one final thought; some venues not
normally doing live music, myself and
others are conspiring to do monthly
house parties, or as was known in the Jazz
era“rent parties” to keep the music flow-
ing. So please call or contact me if you
want to be a coconspirator. I encourage all
of you to send me your info and I will send

The Modesto Music industry stars came out for the 2011 MAMA Awards
presented at the Doubletree Modesto on October 13. There were amazing
live performances from Tragic Culture, House of Orange, the Refuzniks
and a special jazz medley as a tribute to Ernie Bucio. No other show in our
area goes from Blues to Metal, to Acoustic to Americana with music views
and a special lifetime presentation.
This year, the MAMAs celebrated the accomplishments of Bob DeLeon who
was in Modesto’s original rock band, Kent Witt and the Downbeats, back in
1958 and then later spun the hits on local radio K-Fiv, the rock station of
the Graffiti years through the 70’s. Bob and his wife were joined by Kent
Witt and his wife as well. It was a special honor for everyone at the MAMAs
to meet our musical legends.
Multiple MAMA Winner X-Fest made a generous move this year by remov-
ing the event from the Awards and allowing Modesto Blues Fest to capture
the Large event award. The Award was listed as the X Award and thanks to
Chris Ricci for recognizing the other excellent events in our region.
Being a local musician in the big pond of
the Entertainment Industry is a hard job.
Not only do you have to have talent, good
songs, and time to practice but you also
have to be a self-promoter, self-manager,
self-booking agent, and heck, might as
well be a self-CEO. Local musicians, in re-
ality, wear many hats, which is hard on the
spirit when all you want to do is play mu-
sic but all of them are necessary to where
on the road to success.
A Press Releases is something that every
artist needs to know how to write if they
want to submit to newspapers and maga-
zines so the person receiving it wants to
print it and doesn’t just throw it out.
In my opinion, they are somewhat of a
pain especially when you are playing a lot
of dates in a lot of different cities. But in
order to get more attention for your gig
and your music, you have to be every-
where. If someone doesn’t see your Face-
book, they’ll see your flyer, and if they
don’t see your flyer they’ll, hopefully, see
you in the newspaper.
In today’s modern world, press releases
are usually sent via email. There are many
layouts that can be used but, I say, the
simpler the better and grabbing attention
in the header is key even if it’s cheesy.
The header can serve as the subject of the
email and title of the press release. An
example of a header that I’ve used in the
past is: For Immediate Release “Chicago
will know what a “Beautiful Day” sounds
like June 26th” The title of my album was
“Beautiful Day” so it went creatively with
my tour and drew attention to what was
to come next in the release. I was hop-
ing they’d read on thinking to themselves
“Hmmm, what does a beautiful day sound
like? Can it make a sound at all?”
The subtitle sums up and explains a little
more into the release without them hav-
ing to read the entire thing and is usually
typed just below the title in the body of
the email. An example I used for the sub-
title of the Chicago release was “Tara Tin-
sley will grace the stage at Red Line Tap on
her U.S. Summer Tour”
The rest of the press release should ex-
plain all of the details of the show, a bit
about your band, and your music. Don’t
forget to include your contact informa-
tion, including your website.
Who do you send it to? Now that you’ve
got it written, the next step is sending it to
the right person. Researching the papers
and magazines in the city you are playing
and calling them directly is best way to
go about it. That way you know it’s going
to the right person. Usually there is one
person who deals with press releases at
a media company or at a publication who
submits it for printing and if it’s interest-
ing enough, they might forward it to a re-
porter and do an actual story on you.
Some newspapers and magazines receive
so many press releases every week that
some get lost in the jumble so make sure
to follow up before the event to make sure
they received the release and that they’ll
print something on it even if it’s just a
small little blurb announcing the show.
You’ve probably heard the line “Any pub-
licity is good publicity...” well, that may be
true in some cases but revised, “Free pub-
licity is good publicity” fits more with the
local musician’s style. :)
