Today in Ayodhya,Prime Minister NarendraModi laid the foundationstone for the constructionof a grand Ram temple.Sarsanghchalak ofRashtriya SwayamsevakSangh Dr MohanBhagwat, Uttar PradeshGovernor AnandibenPatel, Chief Minister YogiAdityanath and RamJanmabhoomi NirmanSamiti President MahantNritya Gopal Das werepresent on this occasion.A wave of excitementamong Indians settled allover the world today. Itwas natural to happenbecause the centuries olddream of the countrymenis coming true. In such asituation, there was a lotof curiosity about thisprogramme. Modi gave avery scholarly speech onthis occasion. The mes-sage hidden in his speechis widely appreciated. ThePrime Minister said thatduring the movement forthe independence of thecountry, many genera-tions had dedicatedeverything. He saidAugust 15 is a symbol ofmillions of sacrifices, asymbol of freedom. In thesame way, many genera-tions continuously triedfor the Ram temple formany centuries andtoday this day is a symbolof the same tenacity, sac-rifice and determination.Modi said that the Ramtemple to be built inAyodhya will give aglimpse of Indian culture, will inspire humanity foreternity. He said thatMahatma Gandhi haddreamed of Ram Rajya. Inour country’s philosophy,Ram is the only one. LordBuddha-Jainism is alsoassociated with Rama. InTamil there is KambhaRamayana, there are dif-ferent forms of under-standing Rama in everydifferent part includingTelugu, Kannada, and

Kashmir. Modi said thatRam is everywhere, Ramis in everyone. Indonesiahas the largest Muslimpopulation in the world,Ramayana is also recitedthere. PM said that Ram’sname is taken in manycountries of the worldincluding Cambodia, SriLanka, China, Iran, andNepal.

Today, the construc-tion of the Ram templehas started with the coop-eration of the people ofthe country, just as RamSethu was built by writingSri Ram on the stone, similarly the stones fromhouse to house havebecome a source of rever-ence. This is neither pastnor future. PM Modi saidthat this power of India isa matter of study for thewhole world. On thisoccasion, RashtriyaSwayamsevak Sanghchief Mohan Bhagwatsaid in his address thatmany people associatedwith Ram Mandir move-ment could not attendthe programme due toCorona infection andother reasons. He saidAdvani ji could not comehere but he could sit fromhome Must be watchingall these programs. Todaythe whole country isimmersed in joy. Thestruggle of RamJanmabhoomi and thedecision of its SupremeCourt as a result hasbecome an example inthe democratic history ofthe world. The way thedecision of the SupremeCourt was widely wel-comed and the way it wasaccepted by all the classesis also a unique examplein itself. However, today isauspicious day after wait-ing for centuries. There isan atmosphere of joy. Inthis auspicious moment,we have to take thisresolve to imbibe theideals of Rama and try tofollow him.

Centuries old dream fulfilled

By Pranay ShomeContrary to the

claims of the Chinesepresident and proChina elements, thepandemic has accel-erated the decline ofChina as a possiblenew superpower

Co m m e n t a t o r shave called the 21st century the“Chinese century” where China willsurpass the United States as the preem-inent power in the globe with Chinashaping the global order in accordancewith his own whims and fancies. However the reality seems far fromwhat the Chinese regime has envis-aged, with China having to manage anumber of pesky issues.

Hong KongThe first point of decline for China is

the extremely adverse internationalopinion to the change in the politicalstatus quo in Hong Kong which Beijingchanged through the passage of therepressive and controversial nationalsecurity law which criminalizes ‘sub-version, foreign interference and ter-rorism’. China regards the law as a nec-essary step to bolster the security of thespecial administrative region(SAR),however the law in reality has effective-ly diluted the civil and political libertieswhich was guaranteed to Hong Kongduring its handover to China by Britainin 1997 under the ‘one country two sys-tems’ policy.

The West has already taken punitivesteps to punish China for its intransi-gence in Hong Kong with the US sus-

pending the preferential trade statuswith Hong Kong and UK, Canada andAustralia suspending extraditiontreaties with Hong Kong. The publicopinion in the city state has made itclear through demonstrations and dig-ital campaigns that they will not backdown and will fight for the restorationof their civil liberties.

South China SeaChina has through its famed but

vague “nine dash line” claimed theentire South China Sea region, it hasover the years not only militarized theseas but has built artificial islands andhas stationed potent naval assets inthese islands most notably in the

Spratly and Paracel islands. Robert DKaplan in his book ‘Asia Cauldron’mentioned the reasons the for China’sbelligerent behavior- nearly $3 trillionof trade passes through this region, over 70% of Japan’s oil and nearly 80%of South Korea and other South EastAsian countries conventional sourcesof energy come from this region.

However by disregarding the verdictof the UNCLOS’s Permanent Court of

Arbitration in 2016 which declaredChina’s claims as “null and void”, Chinahas earned the wrath of its south EastAsian neighbors. Vietnam has made itclear that the claims and counterclaimsin the strategic region must be on thebasis of the UNCLOS decision. The factthat Philippines one of the most vocalpro-China countries decided to contin-ue a key military pact-Visiting ForcesAgreement(VFA) with the United statespoints to the extent China has succeed-ed in alienating its neighbors. On top ofthat the US has made it clear that theywill vigorously contest China’s claimsby conducting ‘freedom of naviga-tion’exercises.

The American migraineAmerica is perhaps the most potent

elephant in the room for China, since2018 relations had already been on thedecline ostensibly manifested in theform of a bruising trade war, recentevents such as the US closing down theChinese consulate in Houston, theCongress passing a non partisan lawwhich has imposed punitive sanctionson certain powerful members of the

communist party and the US presi-dent’s tirade against China holding itresponsible for the outbreak of the pan-demic has adversely affected the repu-tation of the Chinese economicmachine.

The recent skirmish between Indianand Chinese troops at the Line ofActual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakhwhere 20 Indian soldiers were killed inan apparent ambush has also providedAmerica the leverage needed to causemore countries bandwagon with theaim of blunting the onslaught of Chinaon the American led world order. It willbe interesting to see as to how to futureevents pan out.

BRI- the final nail in the coffinAs if the mentioned above problems

were not enough. The pet project ofChinese premier Belt and RoadInitiative (BRI) is showing signs of com-plete economic collapse.

The BRI was envisaged by theChinese regime to resurrect the ancientsilk route of China which would allowthe enforcement of the “MiddleKingdom” economic order. But thanksto the debt trap diplomacy the Chineseregime has followed is coming back tohaunt it. The most visible signs of stressare coming from Sri Lanka which hasasked for a debt moratorium, Myanmarhas also turned to India for deepeningeconomic relations at a time whenChina has started piling pressure onthese countries. Further the westernworld has also started scrutinizing thecontents of the BRI. The trouble willonly mount for the Chinese economyin the coming days.

Our livesour busy, andour minds areeven busier.Even if youalready spendtime in Nature, your mind’schatter cantake over. If youdon’t set a clearintention toconnect, yougive away yourpower to buildthe relation-ship.

To illustrate, imagine you’reon a first date, and you get so lost in your own thoughts that you don’t hear a word your datesays. Then, at the end of the date, you say: “I don’t want to schedule dates, I justwant to see if they happen organically!” She or he would be running for thedoor.

It’s the same with Nature. You need to listen and communicate, and if youwere raised in the Western world, that probably doesn’t come naturally. So thefirst step to developing your spiritual relationship with Nature is commiting todoing so.Managing Editor- Sumeet Maheshwari, Group Editor- Kranti ChaturvediEditorial Board Send article on email - [email protected]

By Nikunja BIhari SahuFive French-made Rafale fighter

aircrafts have arrived in India, the firstof the 36 jets that is expected to boostIndian airpower considerably in theregion. Rafale, a multi-role combataircraft manufactured by the DassaultAviation Company of France, is capa-ble of carrying out a wide range ofshort and long-range missions out-shining the existing aircrafts of therivals. According to sources, the air-to-air and the air-to-ground strike capa-bilities of Rafales cannot be matchedby either China or Pakistan and, hence, the aircraft would give India anedge over both the neighbours. Thelong combat range capability withmid-air refueling, deadly stock ofweapons and powerful electronicwarfare system are some of the hall-marks of the aircraft which wouldremain as point of worry for the ene-mies.

Rafale will significantly bolsterIndia’s air combat capabilities in fac-ing hostile neighbours in days tocome. According to experts, Rafalescould be game-changers for Indiawhen all the 36 jets are inducted. Thetwo formidable aircrafts in our regionare the Pakistan’s F-16 and China’s J-20. The fourth generation F-16 air-crafts, developed by the General

Dynamics Company of USA, is pri-marily feared for its potential combatrole, outstanding maneuverabilitycapability and ability to locate targetsin all weather conditions, includingnon-visual conditions and strikeaccuracy. However, Rafale can outper-form F16 in many of the combat roles. The 190-kg Meteor missile of Rafalehas a Beyond Visual Range (BVR) ofover 100 km in contrast to the 75 kmBVR of the AMRAAM missile of F-16.In a dogfight between Rafale and F-16,Rafale has an edge since it can loadmore weapons than F-16.

Similarly, China’s Chengdu J-20 air-crafts are claimed to be fifth-genera-tion combat jets compared to the 4.5generation Rafale and has additionalstealth capabilities. However, the J-20shave no actual combat experience inpast while Rafale has been combatproven on numerous occasions. It hasbeen use successfully flown by theFrench Air Force with more than30,000 flight hours in operation inAfghanistan, Libya and Mali. It hasalso been used in missions in CentralAfrican Republic, Iraq and Syria.Rafale can also carry more fuel andweapons than the J-20.

The fully versatile Rafale is able tocarry out all combat aviation mis-sions: air superiority and air defense, close air support, in-depth strikes,

reconnaissance, anti-ship strikes andnuclear deterrence. Rafale is knownprimarily for its long range strikecapability and advanced arsenal ofweapon systems. A Rafale fighter jetwith full fuel tank and fully loadedcombat weapons can travel up to3,200-3,700 km and, hence, has accessto many targets deep inside China. Onthe other hand, the METEOR beyondvisual range air-to-air missile and theSCALP air-to-ground cruise missilewhich are the mainstay of theweapons package of Rafale, wouldprove to be decisive in any aerial war-fare .

This weapons package of Rafaleoutguns weapons systems of all otheraircrafts in the region. SCALP has arange of much over 300 km, whichmeans that for a Balakot type opera-tion, Indian jets would not need tocross LoC and could simply conductthe strike from very much withinIndian airspace. The METEOR missile,on the other hand, can take on enemyaircrafts at a range of over 100 km. Ithas a No Escape Zone of over 60 kmand, hence, the missile easily out-classes any other missile of such classin the region.

However the cost factor of the dealis somewhat alarming! According tothe inter-governmental agreementsigned with France in September,

2016 the cost for the procurement ofthe fleet of 36 Rafale jets is a whoopingRs 58,000 crore which is nearly 0.4%of India’s GDP. Some argues that themoney could have been diverted toother public welfare sectors likehealth and education for a developingcountry like India. However, the secu-rity of the country can never be com-promised as echoed by our PrimeMinister while welcoming the fleetthat there could be no greater virtuethan protecting the motherland.

However, most of our presentfighter aircrafts like Mirage, Sukhoi,MIG, Jaguar etc owe their origin to for-eign sources and, India has not beenable to produce any world class com-bat aircrafts so far apart from Tejas.Tejas, a fourth generation aircraftdeveloped by HAL, is primarily meantto replace the ageing MIG-21 fleet ofRussian origin , but is handicappedby delay in production and delivery.Hence, we have to quickly revisit ouraviation technology and come upwith indigenous world class combatplatforms to make our dream cometrue for an Atmanirbhar Bharat. Thiswould eventually usher in the build-ing of a vibrant domestic aerospaceindustry capable of delivering state-of-the-art products with commercialdesigns for capturing the global mar-ket.

Soaring high with Rafales

Beirut (UNI)Lebanese rescue workers dug

through rubble on Wednesdaylooking for survivors after a mas-sive warehouse explosion sent adevastating blast wave acrossBeirut, killing at least 100 peopleand injuring nearly 4,000.

Lebanon President Michel Aounon Wednesday declared a two-week state of emergency followinga massive explosion in Beirut thatkilled over 100 people and injurednearly 4,000.

Officials said the toll was ex-pected to rise after the blast at portwarehouses that stored highly ex-plosive material. The explosionwas the most powerful ever to ripthrough Beirut, a city still scarredby civil war three decades ago andreeling from an economic melt-down and a surge in coronavirusinfections.

President Michel Aoun said2,750 tonnes of ammonium ni-trate, used in fertilisers and bombs, had been stored for six years at theport without safety measures. Hecalled it “unacceptable”.

An official source familiar withpreliminary investigations blamedthe incident on negligence. Ordi-nary Lebanese directed anger atpoliticians who have overseendecades of state corruption andbad governance that plunged thenation into financial crisis.

“It’s like a war zone. I’m speech-less,” Beirut’s mayor, Jamal Itani, told Reuters while inspecting dam-age he estimated ran into billions

of dollars. “This is a catastrophe forBeirut and Lebanon.”

The head of Lebanon’s RedCross, George Kettani, said at least100 people had been killed. “Weare still sweeping the area. Therecould still be victims. I hope not,”he said.

The intensity of the blast threwvictims into the sea and rescueteams were still trying to recoverbodies. Many of those killed wereport and custom employees andpeople working in the area or dri-

ving through during rush hour. The Red Cross was coordinating

with the Health Ministry to set upmorgues because hospitals wereoverwhelmed, Kettani said.

Facades of central Beirut build-ings were ripped off, furniture wassucked into streets and roads werestrewn with glass and debris. Carsnear the port were flipped over.

People walked around in shock, with helicopters overhead andteams searching for the missing atsea.

“This is the killer blow forBeirut, we are a disaster zone. Mybuilding shuddered, I thought itwas an earthquake,” said Bilal, aman in his 60s, in the downtownarea.

Like others, he blamed politi-cians. “We already have a financialeconomic crisis, people are hungryand, these thieves and looters, willthey compensate for the losses?Who will compenstate for thosewho lost their loved ones,” he said.

The blast was heard as far away

as Cyprus, a Mediterranean islandabout 100 miles (160 km) acrossthe sea from Beirut.

The port district was left a tan-gled wreck, disabling the nation’smain route for imports needed tofeed a nation of more than 6 mil-lion people. Lebanon has alreadybeen struggling to house and feedhundreds of thousands of refugeesfrom Syria.

“The blast blew me metresaway. I was in a daze and was allcovered in blood. It brought backthe vision of another explosion Iwitnessed against the U.S. em-bassy in 1983,” said Huda Baroudi,a Beirut designer.

The U.S. embassy in Beirut, which moved to another part of thecity after the 1983 attack, warnedresidents about reports of toxicgases released by the blast, urgingpeople to stay indoors and wearmasks.

Footage of the explosion postedon social media showed a columnof smoke rising from the port, fol-lowed by an enormous blast, send-ing a white mushroom cloud andfireball into the sky. Those filmingthe incident from tower blocks asfar as 2 km (one mile) from the portwere thrown backwards by theshockwave.

The explosion came three daysbefore a U.N.-backed court is dueto deliver a verdict in the trial offour suspects from the Shi’ite Mus-lim group Hezbollah over a 2005bombing that killed former PrimeMinister Rafik al-Hariri and 21 oth-ers.

The visit will likely create newfrictions between the US and Chi-na, which claims Taiwan as itsown territory to be annexed byforce if necessary.

Taiwan is a key irritant in thetroubled relationship between theworld’s two largest economies,

who are also at odds over trade, technology, the South China Seaand China’s response to the coro-navirus pandemic.

Agencies, WashingtonIn an abrupt reversal, President

Donald Trump is encouraging vot-ers in the critical swing state ofFlorida to vote by mail aftermonths of criticizing the practiceand while his campaign and theGOP challenge Nevada over itsnew vote-by-mail law.

Democratic requests to vote bymail have surged in Florida, a statethat Trump almost certainly mustwin to secure a second term. De-mocrats currently have about 1.9million Floridians signed up tovote by mail this November, al-most 600,000 more than the Re-publicans’ 1.3 million, accordingto the Florida Secretary of State.

In 2016, both sides had about1.3 million signed up before thegeneral election.

``Whether you call it Vote byMail or Absentee Voting, in Floridathe election system is Safe and Se-cure, Tried and True. Florida’s Vot-ing system has been cleaned up(we defeated Democrats attemptsat change), so in Florida I encour-age all to request a Ballot & Vote byMail!,’’ Trump tweeted Tuesday.

White House press secretaryKayleigh McEnany rejected the no-tion that the president haschanged his views. She said Trumpsupports absentee voting by mailfor a reason, as opposed to statesmailing out ballots to all voters re-gardless of whether they requestedthem. Most election officials say

there is little effective differencebetween absentee voting and vot-ing by mail.

Trump elaborated Tuesday onwhy he supports voting by mail inFlorida, but not elsewhere.

``They’ve been doing this overmany years and they’ve made it re-ally terrific,`` he said during anews conference.

``This took years to do,`` headded. ``This doesn’t take weeks ormonths. In the case of Nevada, they’re going to be voting in a mat-ter of weeks. And you can’t dothat.’’ Nevada officials joined sev-eral states that plan on automati-cally sending voters mail ballots. Two states, California and Ver-mont, moved earlier this summerto adopt automatic mail ballotpolicies.

With the bill passed by lawmak-ers on Sunday, Nevada Gov. SteveSisolak, a Democrat, signed it intolaw on Monday. In a tweet Trumpcalled the bill’s passage “an illegal late night coup’’ and ac-cused Sisolak of exploiting Covid-19 to ensure votes would favor De-mocrats.

Trump elaborated Tues-day on why he supportsvoting by mail in Florida,

but not elsewhere. “They’vebeen doing this over manyyears and they’ve made it reallyterrific,” he said during a newsconference.
