INTRODUCTION TO THE EXERCISE. Welcome to the Middelgrundsfortet Middelgrundsfortet is an artificial island located in the north-east part of Copenhague (Denmark). It was constructed in the end of XIX century by the king Christian IX to be a sea fort to defend the entrance to Copenhague’s port. The island is divided in four parts; a flat promenade that surrounds the island, the central hill, the port protected from the sea and facing the city, and the existing building wich is buried in its majority. In the context of the “7 nation artmy” masterplan, each pupil was assigned a block of 7 spirals that envolve the island and represent seven arts with a program of Fine Arts College combined with residential spaces. CONCEPT. Privacy limits The project tries to explore the limits of public and private space, the flexibility of the limits bewteen them. The block is though as many different boxes one inside another that sets different levels of privacy. It works as different layers that come from the most public ones in the exterior to the most private in the interior and domestic ones. The first one and main enveloping of the building is a shell made of glass. The second one is a metal mesh that allows the light to pass through but impairs the vision. The terrace, the perimetral walk and the circulation spaces are conceived as a museum where art and relaxation are the main components. The platform are open spaces where the artists can work and share their job using them as a gallery or as another space of their houses. Module - Private - Indoor The enveloping of the block is though as greenhouse. The sun emits infrared and ultraviolet rays that pass through the first glassy shell. The infrared rays heat the metal mesh and warm the enviroment but can’t escape from the block while the infraviolet rays go through the whole space with more or less intensity. In this way we get an artificial greenhouse effect that raises naturally the temperature inside the building, saving energy in heating wich is really useful having in account the typical cold weather of Copenhague.
