There is a plywood box that lies under the transformer in Golden Colony 1st Main Road at the entrance of Fire Department (fighters) apartments. Any kind of small flicker or even a cigarette butt is good enough to pose a major problem.
Hope the authorities concerned will take measures to remove this at the earliest.

MESWA electsoffice bearers
A meeting of MESWA (Mogappair Eri Scheme West Area Welfare Association) was held on Jan 1. Office bearers unani-mously elected were Messrs S. Savarkar, IAS -Retd. (President), Er.A. Pradabadat-tan (Vice-president), A. Selvaraj, (Sec), S. Joseline Samuel (Jt Sec-1), G. Sai Krishnan (Jt Sec- 2), G. Harikrishnan (Treasurer) and Mrs.A. Anuratha (Executive Member). Among other things discussed in the meet-ing were about mosquito menace, construc-tion of wall along the open sewerage canal, pollution of ground water in the area, re-moval of old & abandoned cars parked by mechanical shops alongside of Ambedkar Play ground in 4th Main Road, requesting Greater Chennai Corporation to grow more trees in all roads and much more.
Mindless duMping continues on Cooum Bank
By Our Correspondent
Flagrantly violating a ban imposed by the Greater Chennai Corporation, debris and non biodegradable wastes are being recklessly dumped along the banks of the Cooum River in Padikuppam near the Maduravoyal Highway close to Rail Nagar.
The civic agency had many months ago warned of criminal action and penalty against those who dump debris and non-perishable wastes along the river bund, which was reported in Mogappair Mail. While for a brief period after this people desisted from discarding waste on the banks, over the past few weeks the activity of dumping has quietly started.
“We don’t know who brings these wastes and dumps it or when they manage to come and do this. But we are finding much to our distress that there is a large quantity of debris and wastes predominantly foam cushions and used / broken furniture has
been unloaded along the banks of the Cooum River here,” says Jayabalan, a resident of a multi-storied apartment situated on the route to Rail Nagar.
“The very idea of banning dumping of debris along the banks of rivers is to ensure that huge chunks of non-biodegradable wastes do not fall into the river affecting its water course. It is the river which serves as a flood carrier during monsoon. If debris and broken furniture, beds and foams are recklessly thrown along the banks, the possibility of them blocking the water flow cannot be ruled out. Ultimately, it is the local residents who would suffer during floods,” rues the resident, who is a civil engineer by profes-sion. “I can vouch for this,” he adds.
According to another resident, Kamala Kuraikose, who stays in a nearby apartment, the bed material and foams absorb early morning mist due to which they release a bad odour when the wind blows heavily. “When it starts raining in due course in a few months, these soggy sofa foams will start stinking. Not just that it will serve as a breeding ground for mosquitoes,” she complains.
“I only sincerely hope and pray that the Greater Chennai Corporation would not just clear these dumped wastes but also erect a fence around the river bank to prevent future dumping here,” she adds.
The hap hazard attitude of a few contractors responsible for the construction of the
Rain Water Drainage still contin-ues. How could one like to justify the fact that debris from drainage work in some other street is brought and dumped in front of a residence at a 40 feet road bifurcating Mo-hanram Nagar and VGP Nagar at Mogappair West. The heaped de-bris is left unattended to for more than 20 days. Now it is being used
as a spot for dumping garbage. This is an eyesore to people who pass by this heap. Now topped with garbage, the place has begun to stink.
The question in one’s mind is: Will the contractor remove it or is it left to the corporation authorities to clear it. The pitiable plight is that residents close to this heap have got to suffer for no mistake of theirs. Will the authorities concerned solve this problem at the earliest.

Port - Maduravoyal elevated corridor to extend 11kmsThe Maduravoyal -
Chennai Port elevated corridor project which got stalled for the last five years is likely to be revived by adding additional 11 km and linking the elevat-ed corridor to the outer ring road and connecting all the way to Bengaluru. On the sidelines of a Con-federation of Indian In-dustry meet on ‘Tamil Nadu State Connectivity’ they have considered this proposal of adding an-other 11 km of elevated corridor linking the Outer Ring Road (ORR) in a detailed project report which is likely to be sub-
mitted by April.Meanwhile, to ensure that the
Maduravoyal-Chennai Port proj-ect goes smoothly, there is a need
to acquire 1.47 hectares of pri-vate land. But the land was not acquired as the government did not release funds. As a result
compensation has to be paid now as per the new Land Acquisition Act, which could cost the exche-quer dearly.

Woman arrestedfor cheating
A 36 year old woman from Puzhal was arrested on Sunday for allegedly swindling Rs 2 lakh from Ambattur and Avadi residents. Police said Kalaiselvi of Kumaran Street allegedly convinced 25 women of Ambattur and Avadi to
take loan from a private bank. She told them that she knew the man-ager and would help them to get loans. She borrowed Rs 7,000 to RS 20,000 from each person as an advance and that she said had to be paid at the bank.
In all she collected Rs 2 lakhs. when the women found that they were duped, they lodged a com-plaint and she was arrested.

In a rather reckless act a few owners and driv-ers of cars are resort-
ing to parking their vehi-cles on platforms in parts of Anna Nagar neigh-bourhood during peak hours causing inconve-nience to pedestrians and other road users. The problem is not confined to one particular locality. Neither is there a pattern to this menace. But on and off road users complain that cars are haphazardly parked with their front wheels mounted on to pedestrian foot paths.
“We have come across such instances of parking of cars on platforms in areas where there are
commercial establish-ments, particularly eater-ies that get large number of footfalls during peak hours,” says Kavya Hari-haran, a school teacher and resident of Sixth Av-enue in Anna Nagar. “Look at these two cars that are mounted on the platform,” she says point-ing to the haphazardly parked sedans on a week-day. “These cars have re-mained here for the last two hours and I have seen pedestrians being forced to walk on the roads due to this mobile encroach-ment,” she adds.
Residents complain that as it is most pedes-trian paths in the neigh-bourhood are encroached or have broken concrete
slabs making it difficult for people to walk. The parking on footpaths only adds to the woes.
The problem is not just with car drivers but also with those riding motor-cycles or scooters, say residents. “For instance at the T Junction where the Shanthi Colony Road meets the road connecting the Anna Nagar Round-tana with Anna Nagar Arch, a section of the footpath near a cafeteria chain is always used to park two-wheelers of its patrons. The security guard of the commercial establishment in fact fa-cilitates customers to park their motorcycles and moves them around,” al-leges Murali Kumaran,
who regularly walks on this stretch of the road to reach his apartment near Riverview Colony in Anna Nagar.
Many residents feel that it is high time parking is regulated in and around the Anna Nagar neigh-bourhood which has grown from a quite resi-dential area to a bustling commercial hub over the years.
“Traffic policemen can be posted at vantage points to ensure that such haphazard parking that directly affects pedestrians is now allowed at any cost. Drivers of such ve-hicles should be fined regularly,” says Jaideep, another resident of Sixth Avenue in Anna Nagar.

An 18-year-old Islamic library near JJ Nagar Police Station on Seethakathi Salai stands as a testi-mony for religious acceptance where even non Muslims visit frequently and get to know about Islam. “The library which has more than 2000 books attracts at least 10 visitors per day. It was started by Mohammed Akbar with lot of Tamil and English books. Now the responsibility of main-taining the library is on my shoul-der. I am doing it happily. We keep the library open on all days except on Fridays”, says Mohammed Nasrullah, Librarian.
The library is kept open be-tween 10 am and 1 pm in the mornibg and 5 pm and 8 pm in the evening. They have a variety of books such as Islam oru nadunilai margam; vunadhu peraal vuyir vazh-girom and Naan kadhalikum Islam to name a few on Islam and a few books in English are also available.
Nasrullah says, “Naan kadhali-
kum Islam” is the most popular book which garners more and more repeated readers. Books like “Kuran and moral science” and “Is-lamic Finance” are also quite popu-lar. All these books basically
propagate the fundamental reli-gious philosophies and aim to preach values and humanity among the people. “Islamic Foun-dation Trust is a publishing house which gives us all the books to run the library. We give the visitors ten

Rail travellers have to get used to ‘checking’ their berths/seats on their mobile phones as Railways plans to stop the practice of pasting charts on train coaches in all major stations. The Rail-way Board (RB) has issued an order to this effect to all zonal railwaysThis will be on a pilot basis for six months from March 1, 2018.
The decision was taken based on the feedback received from many stations including Chennai Central and Egmore, where pasting of reservation charts on coaches was stopped on an experimental basis three months ago. However, physi-cal and digital charts at platforms would continue. An official confirmed that they have been experimenting it and the feed-back is positive.

slowdown in ve-hicular movement along the Poona-mallee High Road (Koyambedu-Mad-
uravoyal stretch) caused primarily due to a new traf-fic flow pattern near the Rail Nagar Bridge is putting to
hardship motorists who take the bridge.
Local residents point out that a couple of months ago due to potholes on large parts of the Poonamallee High Road, the Chennai City Traffic Police has al-lowed vehicles proceeding to Koyambedu from Madu-ravoyal end to not just use
the left hand side of the road but also a portion of the right hand side road where oncoming traffic proceeds.
Due to this the move-ment of vehicles has consid-erably slowed down at the point where the Rail Nagar Bridge meets the Poonamal-lee High Road. This means
vehicles coming from Padi-kuppam and Rail Nagar have to wait for a few min-utes before they could head left or turn right on the Poonamallee High Road. "Since the Rail Nagar Bridge is topographically located in a low lying area, it has be-come extremely difficult es-pecially for oncoming car drivers to apply the brakes on the elevated portion of the bridge and wait to take a turn on the Poonamallee High Road," points out Nagabushanam, a resident of an apartment in Rail Nagar.
The problem is indeed acute for car drivers who are not adept in alternating be-tween the clutch, brake and accelerator on elevated zones. "I have been driving my car for the past one year and I am still not comfort-able in stopping the vehicle at elevations. Each time I stop at an elevated position, I struggle to lift my leg from
the brakes and apply the ac-celerator in time while paral-lely releasing the other leg from the clutch. What is worse here is that the Rail Nagar Bridge is very steep and even for an expert driver it would prove to be a tricky terrain in balancing the ve-hicle at that level," com-plains Kumaresan, a middle-aged man who resides in Valayapathi Salai in Mogap-pair East and takes this route regularly to reach his office in Koyambedu.
Residents urge that the police should regulate the flow of the traffic better on Poonamallee High Road and allow vehicles only on one side of the road so that there is no chaos. "If the flow of traffic on Poonamal-lee High Road is smooth then car drivers will not be forced to wait at the steep elevation on Rail Nagar Bridge for more than a min-ute," says Jagadeesan, an-other car user.
