A proposal to move out operations of long distance buses from the Chennai Mofussil
B u s T e r m i n u s (CMBT) in Koyambe-du, which is extremely accessible to the neigh-bourhoods of Anna Nagar, Mogappair E a s t a n d We s t , Nerkundram and Nol-ambur, has caused concern to a cross-section of residents of these localities.
Presently residents of these localities can board long distance buses to places such as Vellore, Kancheep-uram, Tiruvallur, Ben-galuru, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Tirupati and Theni by heading from their homes to Koyambe-du, which is just a 20 minute travel at the most. Alternatively many residents board the buses, especially those bound for desti-nations in northern Tamil Nadu like Vel-lore, Arcot and Hosur at Nerkundram or Maduravoyal.
H oweve r, n ow there is a proposal to decongest the CMBT by changing the origin depot of long distance buses. “Once this pro-
posal takes effect, people have to board buses bound fo r Andhra Pradesh from Madhavaram depot and those wanting to go to northern Tamil Nadu destinations have to head to Poon-amallee to board the long distance buses. Similarly, buses bound for south Tamil Nadu and also to Villu-puram and Tiruchy would originate from Kelambakkam near Vandalur,” an official at the CMBT ac-knowledged. The CMBT will be con-verted into a depot for inter-city buses alone.
Residents say that this proposal will hit their commute. “We don’t have train con-nectivity to Kelambak-kam. So if we want to go to say Theni or Madurai, then we have to take a bus to Kelambakkam from Anna Nagar or Koy-ambedu and then board a bus to the long distance destination. This will make travel-ling to outstations dif-
ficult. It will easily take more than 90 minutes to reach Kelambakkam from Anna Nagar. The au-thorities should find other ways to decon-gest the CMBT and ensure that all long distance buses con-tinue to ply from there,” said Ambala-vanan, a resident of an apartment complex in Thirumangalam, who was waiting at the 100 Feet Road bus stop.
“The CMBT itself is only about 20 years old. If this has become congested so soon it only shows some lack of planning. The gov-ernment should look at expanding the pres-ent bus terminus by acquiring land after getting commercial establishments vacat-ed. Relocating the ori-gin points of buses is not a feasible propos-al. We don’t have link transport in Chennai. Hence it would be dif-ficult to reach the pro-posed origin termi-nuses,” said Dinakar, a resident of Mogap-pair East.

As the country was celebrat-ing its 72nd Independence Day on August 15, the Nolambur neighbourhood was suddenly abuzz with some unusual ac-tivity. Police personnel from the Nolambur Police Station too were busy tracking Ramar Pillai, the man who shot into limelight in 1996-97 when he claimed to have invented herb-al fuel as a substitute to conven-tional petrol and diesel.
The ‘Herbal Fuel’ man, as Ramar Pillai was better known, landed in soup for attempting to once again sell what he claimed was fuel extracted from natural herbs.
“We were tipped off that Ramar Pillai, who calls him-self the bio fuel inventor, had publicised that he would be selling substitutes for petrol and diesel under the aegis of ‘Ariya Nangai Bio Fuel Com-pany’. He had planned to have
the sale close to Nolambur near the Maduravoyal flyover adjacent to the premises of a deemed university. Since he was previously under scanner for making false claims on herbal fuel, we questioned him,” said a police personnel attached to the Nolambur Po-lice Station. However, Pillai claimed that he was not di-rectly selling the fuel and in-stead had made a third party arrangement for the same. “We have now asked him to be pre-pared for questioning / appear-ance if we need to again,” he said.
A police officer said, “Ra-mar Pillai had said that he would launch his new fuel on Independence Day. He prom-ised to offer one litre of herbal fuel as a substitute for diesel at Rs 5. He said he will be selling an herbal fuel substitute for petrol at Rs 4 per litre. Not just that he even said he would sup-ply one megawatt of power at
Rs 1,000.”Residents were equally sur-
prised to know that the herbal fuel man had resurfaced right in their midst. “I still remember that the Central Bureau of In-vestigation (CBI) had regis-tered a case against him and arrested him in the year 2000 for selling a similar herbal fuel under the names of ‘Ramar Petrol’ and ‘Ramar Tamildevi Mooligai Eriporul’. It was even sold in some parts of Anna Nagar then. However, scien-tists had called his bluff saying it was not herbal fuel at all,” said Akshay Raj, a resident of an apartment in Nolambur, who is incidentally a Chemical Engineer by qualification.
In October 2016, a CBI court in Chennai had convict-ed Ramar Pillai to undergo three years rigorous imprison-ment. “He has come out on bail and again planned to start this business,” said a police officer.

The project would utilise satellite-based cameras that would be able to capture incidents and assist in speed control.
When a motorist rides through the stretch, his image will be captured if he is not wearing a helmet or seat belt,
over speeding or using a mobile phone while driving. The image of the motorist and the number plate will be sent to the transport department’s database.
Using the vehicle registration number, his/her address will be automatically detected and a challan with the relevant fine will be sent to the motorist’s house. If this project is successful, it will most likely be extended to other parts of the city.

Chennai Metro RailPhase II to be extended
Chennai Metro Rail plans to extend one of its corridors in the phase ii project from valasarawakkam to Poona-mallee that will cover a distance of nearly 13 km with 10 stations. This extension from valasarawakkam to Poonamallee will benefit thousands of people living in the western part of the city.
The areas which will get stations (in this extension) include Karambakkam, Porur Junction, Sri Ramachandra Hospital, iyyapanthangal bus Depot, Kaatupakkam, Kumananchavadi, Karayanchavadi, Mullai Thottam, Poonamallee bus Terminus and Poonamalle bypass.

A Dangerous Turning at This Road

on the road opposite the Venugopal S t ree t in Mogappair East risking the possibility of accidents. The road that branches off on the left side of Venugo-pal Street – bang opposite a newly constructed park by the Greater Chennai Corporation – connects motorists and pedestrians to the School Road in Mogappair West and also the localities in old Mogap-pair Village.
A compound of a place of worship extends right in the middle of the road. In fact the road itself has been laid in such a way that it takes a sharp blind curve abutting the compound of
the place of worship. Due to this motorists are not able to see vehicles or people coming on the op-posite side while taking the blind turn.
"The road even other-wise is narrow and is on a slightly elevated position from the nearby ground making navigation ex-tremely difficult. The blind curve only worsens it for motorists,” says Jaganna-than, a resident of Venu-gopal Street. “If we avoid this road, we have to take a long detour via the main roads to reach School Road. But to reach many localities in the old Mogap-pair Village, this is the only road from this part of Mogappair East. So taking the road becomes inevita-ble for many residents of these localities," he adds.
"I was once driving a
car on this road and took the blind turn when sud-denly a scooter came in the opposite direction and I didn’t even notice it. Fortunately, the scooter rider saw my vehicle and managed to swerve a bit avoiding an accident on that day. I wonder how a compound has been built on the road leading to this blind curve. But locals tell me that this has been the case for many, many years now," says Logu alias Lokesh, a resident of the School Road.
Even children find it difficult to ride bicycles on this stretch. "I usually avoid riding my cycle on the blind curve spot. In-stead I get down and push my cycle just to be safe," said Mari, a teenaged boy and resident of the old Mogappair Village.
