MOHAWK COLLEGE REPORT - DECEMBER 2002 Based on the Strategic Directions Adopted by the Mohawk College Board of Governors – April 10, 2002 1.19 Jaynn Miller, Coordinator of Student Success, Geoff Malleck of Business Studies,

Corinne Ethier and Kristin Bolstad of CSAIT and Rita MacDonald of Counselling participated in the one day seminar 'The Right Start to College: Student Motivation Day 1 to Graduation". The student success strategies of Don Fraser, co-author of the national bestseller Making Your Mark, focus on the reality that students show up on the first day of college motivated, eager and ready to make a clean start. If we "grab" on to this raw motivation and develop it, our students will likely persist. This provocative presentation stimulated thinking on how we currently welcome students to Mohawk College and, in support of the Student Success Action Plan, how we might integrate strategies to develop motivation and enhance the success of our students. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services]

1.20 Counsellors are assisting students who are dissatisfied with their original choice of

programs and are redirecting the students to other programs at Mohawk, other colleges, and universities. Students wishing apprenticeships are being referred to Job Connect for assistance in connecting with an employer who would be willing to provide an apprenticeship opportunity. During the past several weeks, several students have successfully been encouraged to complete their semester rather than to withdraw, and to transfer their credits to the G.A.S. program, with a goal to complete the Mohawk-Laurier 2+2 program or to acquire the G.A.S. one-year certificate and then to apply to another more suitable program for the following year.
