Happy New Year and Welcome Back Maddock Families! I hope everyone had
the time to relax and spend time with their families and loved ones. Here at Mad-
dock we are ready and eager to make 2015 a year
filled with success through hard work and dedica-
tion by providing students with daily opportuni-
ties to grow and love learning. The hard work is
the responsibility of us all – teachers, students,
staff, families, and administrators. I know togeth-
er we can make learning an exciting venture!!
January is a great time to reflect on the areas in our lives where we felt success-
ful during the past year. It is also a great time to consider how to make changes in
areas where we would like to improve. Here are some tips to help students start the
New Year off on a positive note.
Get plenty of sleep. Scientists have found that students who do not get enough
sleep have difficulty paying attention in class and do not do as well in
school. The recommended amounts of sleep range from about 8½ to 11
hours a night for elementary students.
Eat healthy. Encourage your child to eat more fruits, nuts, and vegetables.
Drink at least 8 (8 oz) glasses of water every day. Limit the amount of so-
das and snack foods you eat.
Exercise your body and your mind daily. This may include going for walks,
jump roping to your child’s favorite song, stretching, and playing fun brain
teasers with your child.
Follow the Golden Rule – Remind your child to treat others (children and
adults) the way you would like to be treated.
Time + Effort = Achievement –Encourage your child to take the time to care-
fully complete all assignments at school and home; remind them to ask
questions when they do not understand a task; demonstrate perseverance
(keep trying, even when the work is difficult), and eliminate the word
“can’t” from your vocabulary. Make it a goal for your child to do their best
at school every day.

Continued from page 1
Read, read, read – Success in school depends on a student’s ability to read and understand what they have
read. Encourage your child to read a variety of books, including folktales, poetry, biographies, fiction, and
more. Have them read to get information, read for fun, and have them read to someone in your family…
just read!
Attend school regularly and on time. Remember that breakfast begins at 7:35 am and the first bell rings at
7:55 am. Any student that enters the building after 8:05 am is considered tardy. The daily announcements
begin promptly at 8:05 am and after that teachers begin instructing.
Write out your Plan for Success. At Maddock we have already gotten our students in the habit of creating
their own personal and academic goals. Now, you can create goals with your child that may include get-
ting better grades, making new friends, studying harder, staying out of trouble, etc. It’s a great way for
you to be involved in your child’s success as they know you are supporting them.
As always, my door is always open if you have any questions or concerns.
I wish for all of our Maddock Families a FANTASTIC 2015!!
great Gratitude
We ended the 2014 year with the spirit of giving. Everyone’s support demonstrated how involved and caring our
families are for our community. I would like to sincerely thank all of our Maddock Families that participated in
our annual food drive.
Thank you to all of our families that attended our Christmas Sing- a-Long. The Maddock Family definitely en-
joyed sharing this event with our amazing Maddock Families!
Your support is greatly appreciated!!
Keep Warm
Please be sure your child is dressed appropriately for the cold weather. Most days we go outside
for recess and it is important that our students come to school dressed appropriately.

Simple Social Work Solutions
from Mrs. Dunn
Welcome back to school and to a new year! 2015 is bound to have many new and exciting experi-
ences for all of us, as we head into the second half of our school year. With a new year come new re-
sponsibilities and new adventures. January’s character education trait is RESPONSIBILITY and we
will also be celebrating Anti-bullying week January 12-16th! Students will participate in a spirit
week, classroom activities and a cyber safety presenter for grades 3-6 on January 14th.
The word “Bully” has been used much more frequently these days, but what exactly defines
bullying? And who are these bullies?
Bullying Basics: Sited from Teaching Tolerance:
Bullying has three key components—unwanted, aggressive behavior; a real or perceived power
imbalance, and repetition; and the potential to be repeated over time (stopbullying.gov). The combi-
nation of these three factors creates a situation that moves beyond conflict to become persistent per-
secution.
What’s the most effective tool against bullying?
Prevention. By creating an inclusive learning environment that supports all students, educators
maintain a space that is inhospitable to those who would bully. Everyone—including administrators,
teachers, cafeteria staff, bus drivers, assistants, substitute teachers, parents/guardians and students—
has a role to play in creating an anti-bullying climate in your school, and the culture must exist from
the cafeteria to the classroom.
Talk to your child(ren). Explain to them what bullying is and come up with a plan together on
what they should do if they feel they are being bullied or if they know someone who is being bullied.
Encourage them to talk to other students and get to know others. Because bullying so often happens
when adults aren’t present, it’s especially important that students
be empowered to stand up against bullying.
If your child has questions or needs to talk to someone about
bullying have them reach out to me or feel free to contact me, I
am always available for everyone!
Early Childhood Early Childhood had a blast learning about Occupations! Children view the work that
grown-ups do in a very different way. This unit introduced them to many occupations and gave them a look at the oppor-
tunities ahead of them. Children learned about jobs people do in their community and we discussed the ways that these
jobs help others.
Occupations that we focused on consisted of Police Officers, (Detective Michaelson came to visit us), Postal Carriers,
Firefighters, Dentists, Teachers, Librarians, Artists, Doctors, Nurses, Farmers, Chef/Baker, and Construction Workers.
At the easel students could be artists, in blocks they were builders, at the writing center they worked in the post office,
and in the kitchen area they were chefs. All of the children enjoyed dressing up and acting out various occupations.
The students that brought back their ‘Occupation in a Bag’ did a great job sharing with the class what they wanted to be
when they grow up! We hope that everyone has a wonderful Holiday and we look forward to a fun and exciting New
Year! Miss Becca & Ms. Anna

The kindergarteners are very excited because the 100th Day of School is approaching! Our counting goal for the
next report card is to 50. By the end of Kindergarten we will be able to count to 100! If your child already knows
how to count to 100, have your child practice counting past 100! When we count the days we have been in school,
the students see how close we are. The 100th Day is a special day where the students participate in many fun activi-
ties. The students will even have a special project to complete at home for this fun day! More information will be
sent home in the coming weeks regarding the 100th Day!
At this time of the year, the weather is very chilly. Please have your child practice getting themselves ready. If
your child can zip his/her coat, put on and tie his/her own shoes, and put on their winter accessories it makes arrival
and dismissal run a lot more smoothly. We appreciate your help with this process.
Please continue to check your child’s folder each night for homework and to read our weekly newsletter! Don’t
forget to turn in your weekly reading calendar each week for the “Blast Off To Reading” reading incentive program.
We hope you enjoyed Winter Break!
Mrs. Okrasinski and Mrs. Kaplan
Second Grade News We had the best month ever in December! We went to the Museum of Science and Industry! The
festive trees were decorated for each country around the world. We saw the submarine and life-size
airplane. There was a model of the city of Chicago and it was surrounded by an amazing train. This
was our favorite field trip yet!
This month we are going to the Shedd Aquarium. The Beluga whales and dolphins
will be in the Aquatic show. We can find stingrays and sharks under the wild reef. This
trip will give us a new appreciation for ocean life.
Our reading and math MAP tests were taken at the beginning of December. We are
very pleased with the growth our students made! Their hard work is very evident!
You will notice that we have been doing handwriting in class. We will be start-
ing cursive with the children. It is just an introduction to all cursive letter, upper
and lower case!
Our winter party and caroling assembly was a wonderful way to get us excited for the holidays!
We had a nice time! Hopefully everyone had an enjoyable break and is ready for a great start to a
new year! Especially because we have a lot more to learn in 2015!
Mrs. Stokas & Mrs Brown
First Grade News Welcome back! The school year is flying by. We can not believe it is January already. We have
learned so many things and yet there is so much more to learn.
We have worked hard on learning addition and subtraction facts. In chapter 7 we learned how those
numbers are related – they are a family – a Fact Family! In January we begin with chapter 17 on addition
up to 20. Please practice math facts at home. They need to be memorized up to 9+9!
READ! READ! READ! Reading to and with your child is very important. Be sure and set some spe-
cial time a side to read together. You will enjoy the time with your child and they will always remember
those times too. If your child learns now how to enjoy reading it will be a life long skill that will benefit
them many times over. Don’t forget to record those reading minutes on your “Blast Off To Reading“ log
sheet.
On snowy days please send gym shoes so that your child can change out of their boots.

Happy New Year! Wel-
come Back! The third graders
are back and have started the
year off right! We hope every-
one had a wonderful and restful
break. Jupiter is our next planet
in our Maddock Blast Off to
Reading Program! The third
graders are making their way to
their reading goals! Don’t for-
get to turn in your signed read-
ing logs every week!
In reading, we will be
talking about the immigration
and government. Our essential
questions are “Why do people
immigrate to new places?” and
“How do people make govern-
ment work?” In Math, we are
learning about multiplication
and division concepts and ap-
plications. Parents please make
sure your child is practicing
their math facts for at least 15
minutes every night! This is an
important skill that should be
mastered in third grade! We
will be exploring the solar sys-
tem in Science, and in Social
Studies, we will learn about
how people throughout history
have moved from place to place
to start new communities and
build better lives!
Parents please make sure
you are checking that home-
work is completed and that the
assignment notebook is signed
every night! Report cards are
coming! They will be sent
home with your child. Please
take the time to go over them

Ms. Neal’s Literacy News
It’s hard to believe that January is already here! Time has really flown by this year. Dur-
ing the last month our students have been diligently working in literacy class. The 6th graders
have finished their book “Touching Spirit Bear.” Students were riveted to the story and often
didn’t want to stop reading. They made each class a delight as we read and discussed the book.
My intermediate students worked on theme and supporting details. We read and discussed fic-
tion stories and identified the themes throughout the story while using de-
tails in the text to support our conclusions. The primary students dis-
cussed main ideas and details within the story. They also worked in
groups to present their ideas to the class and learn from one another. I’m
so proud of the work the students have produced. They did an excellent
job in their groups responding to literature.
Ms. Neal
4th Grade News
The fourth grade teachers wish all readers a healthy and successful NEW YEAR. We hope that everyone had a
restful Winter Break. Shortly before winter break our students completed Maps Testing. These tests are given to our
students to help teachers see how children are learning the concepts covered in the classroom. These tests will be giv-
en three times throughout the school year.
In January, students may begin logging reading hours for the Six Flags Six Hour Reading Club. All students that
complete this reading incentive will receive a free ticket to Great America to use during the summer. This pass can
also be used throughout the United States. Please encourage your student to participate in this.
Reading is the key to success in school. Keep in mind when going to the library with your child, it is important to
consider your child’s reading level, as well as the child’s personality. If the book is too difficult, he/she will not enjoy
reading it. You may also want to read aloud to you child.
Please be sure your child is coming to school with the appropriate winter outerwear (warm coat, hat, and gloves).
This will help ensure your child stays warm and healthy when playing outside during the winter months.
As a reminder, look for information to come home soon about a 4th grade parent day. Parents will be invited to
participate in some hands-on activities in the classroom along with their child.

Happy New Year!!! We hope
everyone has had a restful break!
Hopefully everyone feels refreshed
and ready to start the new year.
The 5th graders will be wrap-
ping up our Western Expansion unit
and move forward into our Slavery
and Civil War units Social Studies
and literature circles. We are still
working with fractions in Math which
will then lead us into our unit deci-
mals.
Our 5th graders will begin the
DARE program this month. This pro-
gram teaches our students about the
risks and consequences of taking
drugs and alcohol. The students
will learn and participate in engag-
ing activities that will prepare
them for situations that involve
drugs. The program will show
them how to practice responsible
decision-making skills. It will
demonstrate ways to say “NO” to
drugs, and emphasize the im-
portance in making responsible
choices. .

th Grade Class
My time at Maddock School has come to an end but our new teacher Mrs. Mulry will take
over and do a fantastic job.
We have learned many things in Science especially about nature. We have learned and used
multiple digits in multiplying and division.
Like most classrooms we are using the “Wonders” Learning Program for Reading, Writing,
and Spelling. It has helped tremendously.
We are proud to have increased our scores in both STAR and MAP testing each time taken.
I want to thank all the staff at Maddock for their collaboration and friendship during my long-
term substituting for Room 20. I will miss working with, having conversations, and passing you
in the halls. I’ll always have a place in my heart for “The Mohawks”.
Take care.

P.E. Notes by Mr. Clay
Winter time should not limit your workout time.
Just because there is snow on the ground, it should-
n’t be a deterrent to a daily workout. The winter is a
great time for walks in the Forest Preserve or around
your local park. Make sure you wear good boots
and pay attention to where you step. While at the
park, look for a good sledding hill. Imagine the
workout that you and your children can get by sled-
ding and then walking back up the hill. Building a
snow fort is a good workout for your arms and legs,
and a good old snowball fight is great exercise and a
lot of fun!
January is going to be a fun month for physical edu-
cation activities at Maddock School. Grades K, 1 and 2 will start a bowling
unit and will also work with jump ropes and hoops. In bowling we will learn
the basic fundamentals of strikes and spares and also how to keep score.
Grades 3 through 6 will begin basketball as a team sport activity. We will al-
so get ready for our Jump Rope for Heart event in
February which is scheduled for the week of February
9 during our weekly PE periods. We will learn vari-
ous different rope swings, steps and combinations.
Visit our PE website at Maddock School to learn
more about the American Heart Association and the
programs that it offers. Also, stay tuned for more in-
formation on our Jump Rope for Heart/Hoops for
Heart fundraiser.

“Ringing” in the New Year with
Speech and Language!
Welcome Back to School! We hope you had a wonderful winter break! We know that all of us celebrate
our break separately, however, we all get to share the New Year together.
This month’s topic regarding speech and language is on Language Difference vs. Language Disorder. We
thought it is important to know these differences, especially when a student is having difficulties in school.
Based on an article by Teresa M. Gillespie, M.S., C.C.C. Bilingual Speech-Language Pathologist, “a language
difference is the result of the normal process of second language acquisition, and its impact on the develop-
ment of the second language. The first, or native, language is developing normally. A language disorder is
characterized by deficits in language comprehension and/or production in both the native language and the sec-
ond language. “
For a language disorder, the difficulties that may be seen in the classroom are following oral directions, re-
sponding to different questions, formulation of correct sentence structures and difficulty repeating sentences.
This would be evident when communicating in the child’s primary language. The student may also experience
difficulties with the use of grammar and vocabulary and gestures to communicate.
A student who has a language disorder and are also a second language learner may show poor compre-
hension and vocabulary skills, syntax, use of gestures, shortened sentences or just words to communicate and
not responding appropriately to sentences.
One who is an English Learner and does not have a language disorder will only have difficulty when using
the second language, not their home language.
When a student is struggling in school, it is important to understand how they are doing using both lan-
guages. Our hope is that every child will be successful in school with the use of a variety of language! As
speech-language pathologists, it is important to understand these differences so that we may service them in
the best way possible for learning.
For more information regarding this article and topic, you can go to
www.teresa-gille spie.wikispaces.dpsk12.org.

Our Blast Off to Reading school-wide reading program continues into
the new year. In addition to our school reading program, your child’s
reading minutes can also be used for the Six Flags Read to Succeed pro-
gram. Any student in kindergarten through sixth grade can earn a free
ticket to Great America Amusement Park by reading for a total of 360
minutes. The same reading minutes will count for both programs but a sep-
arate Six Flags Student Reading Log sheet must be used to document the
reading minutes for this program. The reading minutes for the Six Flags
Read to Succeed program must be submitted by Tuesday, February 17,
2015. The reading log sheet and parent information letter was sent home
the first day we returned from winter break. Please encourage your child
to read for pleasure every day and log their reading minutes.

Why We Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s Birthday
By Jumaanh Abdelkader
We celebrate Dr. King’s birthday on the third
Monday of January each year. Dr. King is re-
membered for helping making things equal for
all people and because he gave a speech that
changed everything. He talked about how people
should be judged on character, not by the color of their skin. Some people disliked this
message but even more agreed with it. Eventually, because of Dr. King’s work, white &
black people were allowed to drink from the same water fountains, go to the same
schools, restaurants & many more. But one dark day in 1968 he was murdered. Though,
his words and memory live on to this day.

Noor- My dream would be to give a lot of money to homeless so that can have food and a house.
Angelina- My dream would be that all stray pets have a good home to go to.
Jumanaah- My dream would be to see bullying stop in school.
Meagan- My dream is to see people who are hurt get the right

The Hunger Game: Mocking Jay - Part One
Francis Lawerence’s “Mocking Jay: Part One” is basi-
cally all about Katniss Everdeen deciding whether or not
she wanted to be the Mocking Jay. She also faces her sis-
ter in a near to death battle but may or may not die at the
end of part two.
This movie was very dramatic and action packed
and you can’t really predict what’ll happen next. I would
strongly recommend this movie to you because it shows a
lot of emotion and drama. I rate this movie a 5/5!
Book Review
By Rula Zahran
The book I reviewed is called Sisters by Raina Telgemeier.
The book is about a girl named Raina who can’t wait to be a
big sister. Though when her sister Amara is born she finds her
to be cranky and only wants to play by herself. The sisters al-
ways fight but things change when they both get a younger
brother. I liked this book because it reminds me of my own
family in a nice way. You should check it out! I give it 4/5
stars.

App Review With Rawan!
The app is the game named heads up. It is a game where you can choose any topics. Then the person holding the device has to put it over their forehead. Then a word will pop out. The other people have to try to act it out and you cannot rhyme. I give this app 4 out of 4 stars because it is a fun game to play with your friends and family.
The other app is called Fruit Ninja. You can choose different
modes in the game. Then, when you start the fruits pop out and
you have to slice them to get points. There are different kinds of
game modes like survival and arcade. I give these game 4 out of
4 stars. Hope you download the games and enjoy it.

On December 18th we went to the Shedd Aquariam and
the first thing we did is see a dolphin show. It was real-

back it to the water. After the dolphin show we went
and saw jel-
lyfishes. There was baby jellyfishes and big
jellyfishes. We also saw jellyfishes that change
colors.
After that we went down stairs and saw
starfishes. We got to touch them but, before
we did we had to wash our hands and after we
touch them we also had wash our hands. As
we were going we were looking at fishes. We
saw a red fish with red eyes it was scary. As we passed that we saw penguins and there
was kids dressed up into penguins in the playroom.
We also saw an anaconda, it was huge but we didn’t
see its face. So we kept going and we went to the lunch-
room. After we were
done eating we went to a
gift shop and then we
went home. We has a
fantastic time and I can’t
wait to go again!
