Welcome to Week 4 of Term 2. Last week, I was very pleased with the focus on teaching and learning. While this
is an expectation in schools every week, it is notable as students and staff are settling into a solid routine of
teaching and learning despite the many challenges of recent months. Across the school, staff are working hard
to ensure students are showing progression toward their individual learning goals and students are engaged in
learning and working hard.
We have the majority of our students back to full time learning in the classroom and have plans in place with the
students who are participating in combined (home and school) learning plans.
This week, teachers will be meeting to coordinate a range of formative assessments to identify student learning
progress and needs. This data will provide information as to where students are up to in their learning. This infor-
mation will be forwarded to parents through Semester One Reports and Parent/ Teacher meetings and also be
used by teachers to guide future planning and programming. More information about the format of Semester One
reports will be forwarded to parents by Week 7. Please contact me if you would like to discuss report formats or
any other concerns you may have about your child’s learning.
Please continue to take care of yourself and your family. It is important to focus not only on your physical health
but also your emotional and psychological wellbeing. One way to support these areas is through the practice of
gratitude. Gratitude is one of many positive emotions. It is about focusing on what's good in our lives and being
thankful for the things we have. Gratitude is pausing to notice and appreciate the things that we often take for
granted, like having a place to live, food, clean water, friends, family and even computer access. While times can
be tough, it can help to stop and reflect on the positives in our life. An attitude of gratitude is a positive way of
looking at life. Gratitude can increase our children's happiness, teach them to be more empathetic and help them
to be more thankful for everything they have. Research shows there are many
benefits of teaching gratitude to kids. They include things like: higher levels of
happiness and optimism, improved sleep, less stress and an improved ability to
cope with stress. At WPS, students engage in the practice of gratitude through
our whole school wellbeing program to support their resilience and coping abili-
ties.

This week is National Recognition of Volunteers
Week. A great opportunity to sing the praises of
the wonderful people who give their time so gener-
ously to support our students and staff.
We are fortunate to have a hard working group of
parents in the Woolomin School P&C Association
who coordinate many exciting fundraising initia-
tives. The funds raised from these initiatives ena-
ble all students to attend excursions at a much re-
duced cost to parents.
We also have two amazing ladies who volunteer
within the school, supporting students and staff.
Mrs Kimball has been volunteering in our school
two days per week for several years. Mrs Kimball
supports Mrs Hughes in the office making teaching
resources and supports Miss Burford in the Infants
room. Mrs Meredith volunteers on Thursdays and
supports Mrs Smith with SRC initiatives. While
COVID-19 restrictions have meant that volunteers
are currently not able to support in schools, it is
important to acknowledge the valuable support
volunteers provide to our learning environment.
We appreciate our wonderful volunteers and thank
them for their time and energy and look forward to
welcoming them back to school as soon as possi-
ble.
While most students have returned to school five
days there are several students who are returning
to face to face learning on a phased return plan.
The two scheduled days these students are re-
quired to attend school during this phase are as
follows:
Infants and Primary - both Tuesday and Wednes-
day.
Students who require support with medication or
health procedures are required to have a current
health care plan. If this relates to your child could
you please ensure you provide school with an up-
dated Health Care Plan that has been completed
by your doctor. If you are unsure if this concerns
your family please contact the principal or school
asap. Mrs Hughes has emailed these families and
will be following up with them to ensure these are
in place.
It was very sad to hear that Natalie Austin passed
away on Sunday 10 May. Natalie was a beloved
member of the Woolomin village and school com-
munity. Throughout the years she volunteered
many hours supporting fundraising and student
council events. Natalie was a hard working mem-
ber of the Woolomin P&C and was actively in-
volved in Animal Nursery initiatives. She was a
coordinator of many raffles and was amazing at
seeking out lovely raffle prizes. For many years,
Natalie cooked the Year 6 graduation cake which
was presented to Year 6 students on presentation
night. Their cake was always decorated beautifully
and would have taken Natalie many hours to
make. Natalie was the instigator of a project where
a collection of student artwork from across the re-
gion was selected, framed and donated to the
North West Cancer Treatment Rooms. It was Na-
talie’s wish that the artwork would brighten the
walls and lives of people who had to sit for hours
while receiving treatment. This is an example of
Natalie's kind heart and generous spirit. Our love
and thoughts go to Natalie’s family and friends.

On Wednesday 20 May Dr Jim Stacey will be hold-
ing appointments for the 2020 Influenza vaccine at
Woolomin School.
Whilst all staff, students, families and community
members are invited to attend, we would like to
clarify that this is not a school initiative. We are
hosting the appointments in the school library to
support community access to the service being
provided by Dr Jim Stacey.
Only students that have a parent present on
site, a signed consent form, their Medicare
card and their $20 payment will be seen by Dr
Stacy and receive the vaccine.
We ask that you RSVP your interest to the school
so we can ensure strict social distancing is ad-
hered to and that Dr Stacey has enough vaccines
with him for the appointment. Appointments will be
held in the School Library.
Information and consent forms were emailed to
parent email addresses last Tuesday 12 May. If
you require a printed consent form please let the
office know and we will organise this for you.
This year the placement process for entry into op-
portunity classes for 2021 have been delayed until
later in the year. Applications were due to open on
April 28 2020 but have been postponed until fur-
ther notice. This delay has been in response to the
social distancing measures that are currently in
place throughout our schools and communities.
The opportunity class placement will still go ahead
in 2020, and the department is working to ensure
Year 5 students are placed in Opportunity Clas-
ses in 2021 with minimal disruption to both schools
and families. We will advise of dates once they
have been announced.

This year our school will be taking part in the Tell Them
From Me surveys. This includes 4 surveys: 2 by stu-
dents, 1 by parents and 1 by teaching staff. The first of
these surveys will be conducted in Week 5 (next week)
by students.
During Term 3 parents will have the opportunity to com-
plete the Parent Survey. More information on this will be
sent home during Term 3.
These surveys are conducted by an independent re-
search company called The Learning Bar and all an-
swers given are anonymous and confidential. Students
will be able to skip any questions they do not wish to
answer .
If you DO NOT wish for your student to participate in
this survey please ensure you have completed a non-
consent form and returned to the school office by this
Friday 22 May.
