MONDAY, APRIL 24, 2017 at BALTIMORE ORIOLES RH Chris Archer (2-0, 3.20) vs. RH Ubaldo Jiménez (1-0, 5.51) IT’S YOUR DAY, IT’S YOUR WEEK—Today, on his 28th birthday, OF Ste- ven Souza Jr. was named American League Player of the Week by Major League Baseball for April 17-23, his first time winning the award…Souza hit .414/.433/.759 (12-for-29) with 2 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 9 RBI, tying for the AL lead in hits, XBH (5) and RBI…it is the 39th time a Ray has been chosen for AL Player of the Week, first since Evan Longoria May 30–June 5, 2016. Ê Last year on his 27th birthday, became the first in Rays history to hit 2 HR on his birthday and joined MIN Justin Morneau (2009) as the only players to do so at new Yankee Stadium. D.L. UP TO 11—The Rays have placed a major-league-most 11 players on the disabled list, four of those since Opening Day: Mallex Smith (right ham- string strain), RH Jake Odorizzi (left hamstring strain) and LH Xavier Cede- ño (left forearm tightness) and RH Tommy Hunter…OF Colby Rasmus (recovery from right hip surgery) will play LF for Double-A Montgomery today, his third rehab game there (1-for-7 total and 0-for-4 yesterday as the DH… Smith’s first scheduled rehab game was rained out (yesterday for Class-A Charlotte at Palm Beach) and today played 5 inn. in LF in an extended spring game, going 0-for-3…he also took live BP facing RH José De León…Odor- izzi is scheduled to pitch tomorrow in a simulated game in Baltimore. Ê Major league coach Jamie Nelson is not making this road trip due to a medical procedure…Rafael Valenzuela, coach for the GCL Rays, will step in to help fill his duties. RAY MATTER—Yesterday the Rays finished a 4-2 homestand with a 6-4, 10-inning loss to Houston, this after staking a 4-0 lead in the 1st inning…the Rays have blown a lead in 6 of their last 7 losses including both defeats in the homestand; on Fri vs. HOU they led 3-1 but lost 6-3…the Rays have held a lead in each of their last 8 games but have gone 4-4 over that stretch…the Rays led 4-3 after 8 innings yesterday, marking their first loss of the season when leading after 8…they were 62-3 when leading after 8 innings last season, and their last such loss was July 23, 2016 at OAK…won 37 straight in between. Ê This is the third straight series the Rays are playing an opponent entering the series in first place in their division (DET, HOU, BAL). Ê Seven of the Rays 10 wins have been of the comeback variety, one shy of Houston for the AL lead. Ê The weekend series with Houston (1-2) marked their first series loss at home as they dropped to 9-4 at Tropicana Field…the Rays already have as many winning homestands (two) as they did over the entire 2016 season, when they didn’t capture their first one until July 29– Aug 7 vs. NYY/KC/MIN (6-4). RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY—With rain in the forecast both today and tomor- row, it’s worth noting there have been 40 postponements in Rays history, seven of those at Camden Yards…all but one of those seven has come in the month of April…the Rays only postponement last season was here on April 9 due to a “wintry mix” and was made up on June 25 as part of a DH (Rays lost both games). EARLY AND OFTEN—Yesterday the Rays scored all 4 of their runs in the 1st inning, when they recorded 5 straight hits, all with 2 outs…they were then shut out on 2 hits the rest of the game…the Rays have scored a major-league-most 24 runs in the 1st—9 more than any other AL team (Seattle, 13)—and multiple runs in the 1st inning seven times…in innings 1-through-3 they have outscored opponents 51-30, but from the 4th inning on they’ve been outscored 58-42. THAT’S OFFENSIVE—The Rays lead the AL with 93 runs scored, although they have also played 20 games, tied for most in the AL…this is their most runs after 20 games since 2012 (96), and a year ago the Rays had 70 runs through 20 games…over the past three years (2014-16) the Rays ranked last in the AL in runs (1,928), finishing last in 2014 and 14th in both 2015 and 2016. Ê The Rays lead the AL with 291 total bases, 61 XBH (T-1st with Oak- land) and 6 3B…they rank among AL leaders with a .258 avg. (4th), .327 OBP (5th), .427 SLG (2nd), .754 OPS (3rd), 176 hits (2nd), 24 HR (T-3rd) and a 85.7 SB pct. (12-for-14; 2nd). HOMEBODIES—The Rays have the majors’ worst road record (1-6, .143) but lead the majors in home wins (9-4)…the AL East boasts four of the ma- jors’ six best home records: Yankees (8-1, .889), D-backs (8-2, .800), Red Sox (7-2, .778), Orioles (6-2, .750), Tigers (5-2, .714) and Rays (9-4, .692)… the Rays have hit .279/.351/.444 at Tropicana Field but .218/.280/.393 on the road…starting pitchers have actually been better on the road, with a 2.86 ERA (34.2-IP, 11-ER) compared to a 4.20 ERA (75-IP, 35-ER) at home…the bullpen has a 6.85 ERA (22.1-IP, 17-ER) on the road and 2.20 ERA (45-IP, 11-ER) at home…Rays have committed only 4 errors in 13 home games, but 6 errors in 7 road games. CONSIDER THIS—The Rays hold a .500 record (10-10) thus far despite a wide range of obstacles: Ê 11 players on the DL, most in the majors…this includes three poten- tial starting position players (C Wilson Ramos, SS Matt Duffy, OF Colby Rasmus), four veteran relief pitchers (RH Brad Boxberger, RH Tommy Hunter, RH Shawn Tolleson, LH Xavier Cedeño) and No. 2 starter RH Jake Odorizzi. Ê 6 players on the active roster were not on the 40-man roster at the be- ginning of spring training: OF Shane Peterson, OF Peter Bourjos, RH Jumbo Díaz, C Derek Norris, C Jesús Sucre and INF Rickie Weeks Jr. …Hunter had been the seventh before going on the DL.
