A Study of Family, Power and Political Influence: Lessons Learned from 19 American Dynasties

The very existence of political dynasties in modern U.S. history seems at odds with the American ideal of a democracy open to participation by all. In a similar vein, the very study of such prominent families seems to run counter to prevalent trends in historical research that seek the experiences of the disenfranchised over so-called “Big Man's History.” Yet, our work these past two years as co-editors on a book project covering 19 dynastic families at the national, state and regional levels found just how surprisingly intertwined the stories of these

families are in the political fabric of the nation as a whole, throughout the twentieth century and beyond. Presented by Kathleen Gronnerud, SBS & Scott Spitzer, Ph.D., Political Science, CSU-Fullerton

Online Schedule: www.saddleback.edu/uploads/asenate/FlexFall2018.pdf

Week-at-a-Glance: www.saddleback.edu/uploads/asenate/Fall18Glance.pdf

Note that the following events will be videotaped, and you may watch these independently for flex credit: Suicide Prevention Training (1 pm Wednesday) and the Geek Report (10:30 am Thursday).

Easy Reporting of Flex Hours with Google Forms. There will be a link on the flex web page (www.saddleback.edu/flex), listed following the Prof. Dev. Week schedules. The link will be available late in flex week.

✦ Flex hour reporting of Campus-Wide Events, Division & Department Meetings, Faculty Center Activities & Videos Watched can be done any time by filling out a simple online Google form. Saves you time… and no flex rep signature required. Click on the links under Individual Activity Google Forms on the flex webpage.

For conference attendance and all “big” or particularly unique projects, the Individual Activity report form is required. Faculty who participate in more individualized or lengthy/substantive individual activities for flex credit will continue to use the Individual Activity Reporting Form. You can access the form online on the college website under Faculty & Staff; Flex Program/In-Service (www.saddleback.edu/flex).

Don’t forget to get your division flex rep to sign this. E-signatures are requested!

You can also earn flex credit for working on SLOs or participating in a 2nd committee (besides the one that is contractual). About the only “extra” committee work that doesn’t count is being on a search committee.

If you have questions about the Professional Development/Flex program, check out the single-page Flex FAQ (http://goo.gl/xtnjjI). It’s on the Professional Development/Flex website, along with the somewhat longer, Program Handbook.
