FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Friends of Monte,

On International Women’s Day this week we celebrated the incredible achievement of women around the world.

The very powerful message from the United Nations (UN) this year is #BeBoldForChange with a focus directly on equal participation and equal opportunities for women in the workplace.

In her International Women’s Day message, the UN’s Women Executive Director, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuk, spotlighted gender imbalance both in the home and workplace. With women and girls spending “too many hours on household responsibilities - typically more than double the time spent by men and boys at the expense of learning, of paid work, sports, or engagement in civic or community leadership. We have to start change at home and in the earliest days of school, so that there are no places in a child’s environment where they learn that girls must be less, have less, and dream smaller than boys.”

Catherine McAuley, opitomised the notion of what it means to be bold for change in nineteenth century Dublin, bravely championed the needs of both women and men well before #hashtags entered our popular culture. Continuing Catherine’s pioneering vision in the twenty-first century, we encourage your daughters to be critical thinkers, problem solvers and innovators of the futures they wish to independently create for themselves in their workplace and beyond.

It was incredibly inspiring to witness so many Mercy Men being bold for change as they stood beside Mercy Women at our College International Women’s Day Breakfast on Wednesday. Fathers, Brothers, student Leaders from Marist College, St Aloysius College and St Ignatius College as well as Mercy men on staff all stood in partnership with Monte’s Mercy women in support of gender parity in our boardrooms, in business and in the home.

NICOLE CHRISTENSEN

We witnessed success in change-making partnership at the College’s International Women’s Day Breakfast this week. Research scientist, Dr Anita Baillie (Monte Alumni 1994) spoke of her gender-parity research team working collaboratively to find sustainable bold solutions to the world’s energy needs. Environmental strategist, Ms Judith Friedlander, spoke of the powerful connections initiated between people of different faiths and cultures through her social initiative FoodFaith.

As we witness both Anita and Judith as this generation of change-makers, I encourage our strong Mercy girls to also #BeBoldForChange. To move from talk to purposeful action. To never stop imagining what their impact on the world could be. Our girls are being educated to be bold and courageous as change agents of the future.

Thank you to all the Monte parents, carers, students and staff who will be helping us welcome an abundance of visitors to the College this Sunday. I look forward to another Open Day in celebration of the diversity of our extraordinary College. See the Monte Open Day Program.

“Here’s to strong women. May we know one. May we be one. May we raise one.”

God bless.

Mrs Nicole Christensen Principal

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY

Tom Lee Director of Innovation and Technology

The Monte Industry Partnership Project with Laing O’RourkeOn Thursday March 2, Monte officially formalised a STEM-focused student engagement project with Laing O’Rourke. This Industry Partnership Project aims to provide our girls with the opportunity to not only experience the engineering and construction industry in real-life and in real-time, but to also inspire the girls who have a passion in engineering and its many forms. In addition to this, the construction industry is also made up of a range of diverse professions including quantity surveying, commercial property, legal, environmental and sustainable practices, design and finance. In addition to providing STEM-based learning opportunities for our girls, our other goal is to reach beyond the STEM opportunities and explore different teaching and learning connections in other areas of the curriculum. As such, we are also very fortunate to be collaborating with other connected parties including Dexus Property Group, Rider Levett Bucknall, Savills, and Touchstone Partners.

This project will consist of 8 modules (1 per term) and will be closely related to the 100 Mount Street Project. Each module will correspond to a milestone point of the building’s construction timeline. Situated in the heart of North Sydney, Laing O’Rourke are building a 44 level tower which will be considered the tallest building in North Sydney. Our girls will be able to not only view and experience each of the building phases, but also see the digital engineering capabilities that Laing O’Rourke are utilising to enhance the design, construction and operational phases of this project.

We currently have 43 students ranging from Years 9 - 12 who have signed up to participate. We look forward to March 22 when we commence with Module 1. This will include a trip down to 100 Mount Street to not only see the building site, but begin our journey with Laing O’Rourke with an introduction to construction and engineering. This will also include the practice of Laing O’Rourke’s digitalised and industry leading approach to Health and Safety.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY

We believe that a Monte girl can do anything. History has shown that many Monte girls have undertaken tertiary study and indeed establish a career in design, innovation, engineering and technology. And with this industry partnership project, we believe that the learning experience will be two-way. That is, Laing O’Rourke will have as much to learn from our girls as we do from them. Watch this space.

Readers for LifeReading is fundamental to the development of literacy skills and the ability to think critically and creatively. We encourage wide reading at Monte through Year 7 Library periods, Wide Reading Lessons in Years 8 to 10, and the promotion of Related Materials in Years 11 and 12. As parents, you can support your daughter’s learning at home by becoming a co-learner, reading the prescribed texts and discussing them with your daughter. This year, we have added some wonderful new texts to our already rich booklists.

Year 9 will study a new unit of work on dystopian fiction later this year, reading either The Road to Winter by Mark Smith or Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Smith’s novel was published in 2016 and is set in a post-apocalyptic Australian setting in which the normal rules of society no longer apply. It’s a great read, and confronts our attitudes about the environment and the treatment of asylum seekers. Bradbury’s novel imagines a future in which personal freedoms are suppressed and literature is outlawed. It still reads as well today as when it was written in 1953, and it should be an appropriate challenge for our advanced readers. In Year 12 Advanced English, we have introduced Sixty Lights, a lyrical novel by Australian writer Gail Jones, about an adventurous young nineteenth century woman who explores the world through photography. It is a beautiful story, told in an unexpected and original form.

These are just a few examples of the new texts we introduce each year. If parents need additional reading suggestions, please do not hesitate to ask your daughter’s English teacher or a member of the Library staff.

Sydney Jewish Museum VisitOn Wednesday the 22 of February, two Year 8 classes and one Year 7 class visited the Jewish Museum. The Jewish Museum is a memorial and a place to teach everyone about what happened in WW2 and the Holocaust. Whilst we were there, we went on a short tour around the museum. After the tour, we gathered together with Ana de Leon who is a survivor of the Holocaust. We were honoured to listen to her life as a young child, with her mother and grandparents. Overall it was a humbling experience and I would love to go back there again.

Social Media ➜ Social JusticeAs part of Monte’s Year of Service, Year 9 have been studying Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird within a unit of work focusing on “Advocating for Social Justice”. They have learned to use a range of blogging tools and have experimented with finding their own ‘voice’ in their writing. As a result, each student has created a blog in which they advocate for a social justice issue in which they are interested. Sophia LittleJohn’s blog “Speaking Out: Loud and Proud” (pictured here) is an excellent example of how to write in the real world about a real issue.

New forms of assessment

Does this look like a Year 12 assessment task? The English teachers have been working with senior students on new ways of assessing speaking and listening skills. We aim to create tasks that are authentic opportunities for learning, requiring students to think on their feet and interact in a meaningful way. The students in this photograph are undertaking a Year 12 Advanced English assessment task. With their peers they are able to use notes, take notes, discuss ideas and learn from each other, whilst demonstrating their knowledge and skills

for the teachers who assess them. They are able to prepare material to share, but then interact with the ideas presented by other students. This is assessment OF learning, but also assessment AS learning and FOR learning. The task itself becomes a meaningful opportunity for students to think about what they know, learn from their peers and reflect on their knowledge and understanding of the Area of Study.

Sunset by Lara Harvey, Year 8

And

now the hour has come at last,

For

the stubbornly azure blue sky,

To

abandon its uniform blue in the past,

And,

no longer shy,

Don

the vibrant colours of sunset’s palette,

In

a majestic display,

Warm

oranges, pale yellows and baby pinks adorn the celestial sphere,

Flooding

the Heavens as the sun goes to lay,

To

sleep on its soft bed of clouds,

As

the moon is just awakening.

At

last the time is within sight,

As

the sun bids the world a fond farewell,

And

those who witness, delight in its golden, fading light.

And

so that time is nigh,

When

I must bid you adieu,

But

worry not, for when the sun raises its sleepy head,

We’ll watch it, both me and you

Spotlight on Creative WritingA lovely writing snippet from Claire Crotty of Year 8, inspired by Monte’s Circular Drive….

I walk along the brown-brick drive. Warm rays of sun burn my face. The shade of the intimidating and ornate building falls over me like cool flowing silk as I sit under the black lamp post. Crowds of small red and pink flowers rest on the bushes behind me and the smell of the grass refreshes my mind. The steady rhythm of the crickets and construction is broken by the chirping of a bird which glides from tree to tree. A gentle breeze flows through my hair, blowing away my old thoughts as I open my notebook and begin to write…

SR LECIA’S THOUGHTS

Sister Lecia Coombe RSM

THAT MOUNTAIN-TOP EXPERIENCE Dear Readers,

Have you ever experienced an extraordinary episode that set you high in the clouds? I suppose the longer one lives,

the more often such an experience could be had, but one of them could be the most memorable as being just what you needed to lift your spirit. I had one such experience just a few weeks ago.

That is what Jesus had in mind for his three “favourite” disciples – Peter, James and John. He knew they had a lot of very hard things to face in the near future – they would be devastated by His Passion and Death, and they would need extra strength to maintain their faith in Him. So, it was up to a high mountain He led them. I can almost feel their legs objecting, and the question arising: “Why?”. That was my Holy Land experience of Mt Tabor! (Unlike that party of four, we were transported through the worst of it.)

MT TABOR TODAY, WITH THE COMMEMORATIVE CHURCH OF THE TRANSFIGURATION

There, at the top of Tabor, the disciples saw an extraordinary view of the sky. They looked up to see Jesus radiant, his face transfigured, speaking to Moses and Elijah. I imagine the scene in glorious colour, a dome canopied by brilliant cloud. They became ecstatic, forgetting their sore legs. Peter said they should stay there: he would build three tabernacles!

Soon their ecstasy turned to terror; they fell on their faces as a dark cloud overshadowed them, and they heard the voice of God saying: “This is my Beloved Son; listen to Him.”

Then they opened their eyes and saw no-one but Jesus. He lifted them up and told them not to be afraid. As they walked together down the mountainside, I think they would have spoken of many things, but Jesus warned them not to tell anyone of this until He had risen from the dead.

They had seen the glory of Heaven. Even Jesus must have felt affirmed by The Father’s words. When you have a peak experience like this one, the only path is back down the mountain, to the Dark realities of life. The glimpse of Light is a pledge of Heaven with no more suffering, won for us by Jesus’ own endurance, and by the faith he gave to those disciples, His future Church Leaders. We will always remember the promise, and know that Heaven is still all around us, though hidden temporarily from sight.

This week let us live in the strength of Mt Tabor, grateful for any revelation of God’s glory, and let us listen to Jesus. Spend some time pondering this text: Matthew 4:1-11.

I look forward to seeing you in the Chapel on Open Day. Until then, my very best wishes.

This is the Monte Alumni everyone needs to know about in 2017One of Monte’s Alumni is going places in the Australian Fashion Industry at this year’s Melbourne Fashion Festival.

Her name is Kacey Devlin and she is this year’s winner of the 2017 Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival (VAMFF) National Designer of the Year award, having taken out the top prize in the country.

The National Designer Award recognises designers in their early stages of business who excel in creative design and quality and who demonstrate potential growth within the industry. This lucrative and prestigious award entails a prize package worth $100,000.

The Melbourne Fashion Festival National Designer Award is presented by David Jones and supported by Harper’s BAZAAR.

Harper’s Bazaar described Kacey as “the fashion designer you need to know about in 2017”.

David Jones will be stocking her fashion collection and as the judges stated, her collection was a stand out making it very marketable.

SPOTLIGHT ON DESIGN

Kacey graduated from Monte in 2006 and completed Degree studies at UTS in Fashion Design. Her innate ability and passion has always been Design and Technology.

During Kacey’s final year she was injured in a road accident as a pedestrian. She suffered great adversity yet through her commitment and resilience came through brilliantly. Kacey was a highly motivated and dedicated innovator with an unwavering love of design.

Her current accolades are testament to her conviction to succeed in her field of expertise.

Kacey has shared her enthusiasm and time by returning to Monte as a guest speaker for the Annual Design Showcase in 2016.

We are looking forward to her continued success and we predict this will become international.

Here’s hoping!

Margot Henville P&F President

L ike most of us, the P&F tries to have at least as much money in the bank at the end of each year as it did at the beginning.

This is consistent with the philosophy of keeping events as inexpensive as possible so that they more or less each break even. The P&F’s modest annual administration costs (mainly the cost of the audit we are required to undertake) are covered by the annual levy on parents, with the proceeds of the raffle funding specific College initiatives that benefit current and future Monte students.

Unlike some other schools, the P&F does not play a fund raising role – with Monte’s Development Office being responsible for bursary, building fund and other worthy causes within the College.

Some years ago, the P&F retained some funds with the intention of contributing to the funding of the ACC. For reasons lost in the mists of time, that contribution didn’t eventuate and so the P&F has recently contributed that surplus - $100,000 – to the College to fund a range of priorities determined by the College Executive.

This is a significant amount of money that all our girls will benefit from – and an investment that is both an example of Mercy in action and only possible through the support of you, Monte’s parents.

On behalf of the College and all our girls, thank-you.

PARENTS’ & FRIENDS’ REPORT

The P&F would love to see you at Open Day on Sunday!
